NOT something I can recommend...
a book that required gritted-teeth to complete.

If you were expecting a Dava Sobel style (Longitude) book of fascinating insight and drama, you will be deeply disappointed.

The author wanders randomly through 17th century gardening, seemingly without direction or interest.

If you expected to see HOW Mr Fairchild did things, you won't get it. If you expected explanations on the methods used, you won't get it. If you expected even rudimentary paragraphs on the sex organs of plants or a light-weight explanation of SAP flow, once again, you won't find it. If you wanted endless vague descriptions of people long dead, then this book is for you.

The final few pages top of an execrable book by being blatently pro-GM, despite most intelligent people having grave misgivings on the directions being taken.

I cannot recommend the book unless you already have a detailed knowledge of gardening and 17th century Britain. But then you don't need this book either.

Jackie Wilson - Mr. Excitement!

Not Much Of a Book
It is more of a large pamphlet than a book. I was disappointed and felt misled by the title. Instead of a book about Jackie Wilson, it had 4 photos including the one on the cover and a few pages of biography, and the rest was the words and music to 27 Jackie Wilson songs. So if that's what you are looking for I would give it a higher rating.

Ahh ... the irony ...
Most of the Mr.Men/Little Miss books are very amusing. Some are even good examples of modeling and explaining personality traits for young children; and, it is not unusual for some characters to find their limits or learn how balance their traits to adapt better in their fanciful, little story-world.

Little Miss Stubborn, on the other hand, is so far the worst I've read. Not only is the story lacking the hallmark droll of the series; but, a little TOO true-to-her-character, Little Miss Stubborn never changes! Offering perfect examples of how to be stubborn, the story just meanders to no conclusion. Even worse, there were no "consequences" for Little Miss Stubborn compelling enough to point out to children how unpleasant this behavior can be. This is an unusual book in the series compared to others such as Mr. Tickle (who learned the limits of his tickling antics) and Little Miss Wise (who learned how to be a little more adventurous).

If you have a stubborn child whom you hoped reading this to might shed some insight for them, don't bother. Lessons aside, it isn't even entertaining. Pointless.

Mr. and Mrs. Muddle

Too Sad & Sour
Mr. and Mrs. Muddle have troubles meeting in the middle, in other words, agreeing on anything. She likes to ride in cars and he doesn't like to, then he wants to go for ice cream and she doesn't want to. The book is a thinly veiled look at marital discord which is frankly too sour a subject for a children's picture book.

The broken-line, muddy watercolor illustrations by Catherine O'Neil although sweetly humorous have me puzzled (are the characters horses? aardvarks?). The scenes ansd images don't "read" easily or quickly.

The meet-me-in-the-middle compromises the couple achieve seems a weak solution to their overall unhappiness together. I finished the book thinking ultimately the two characters would be happiest in life without each other as they were incapable of taking turns at making each other happy.

My four year old was ultimately confused and bored by the overall wordiness/rhyminess of the text and the overuse of she said, he said.

Not up to expectations.
I thought the author would actually REVIEW the outlet malls, not just tell us where they are (you can get that for free on the Internet!) He warns that not all "outlets" really offer great bargains -- but you have to check 'em all out yourself to find out which ones do.

And guess what -- he says you can get great prices at Sams, KB Toys, and Tuesday Morning. Well, "duh".

I don't get it.
I hadn't met a book by Leo Lionni I didn't like until now. A country mouse turns into a "strange creature dressed in black" and the reader is left to wonder why. I have a college degree and I consider myself a pretty intelligent person, but I could not figure out why the mouse changed and what the change had to do with the rest of the story. This was a very disconnected story, and I just didn't get it. Maybe I'm not as bright as I thought. Fortunately, I didn't buy it. Check it out first, and if you figure it out, please write about it.

Bad illustrations -- culturally incorrect illustrations
Thumbs Down!! This "Korean Folktale" book's illustrations does not represent Korean culture at all. For example, it showed Koreans sitting on chairs (Chinese style) at home in the old days when they should be sitting on the floor and even Korean dresses were wrong. Almost every illustrations were misrepresentation of Korean culture. I have written a note to the publisher but have not heard from them. Couldn't they consult Koreans for this book

Cashing in
Ever eager to cash in on the experience of groups who have experienced racism, Mura pulls together a collection that places him front and center as pitable victim. Glad he could fit editing this anthology in between his rounds of golf. If I were his white physician wife, I would be mortified.
