Wonderful Stories
Ms. Beryl Bainbridge not only is a wonderful novelist, she also has shown she possesses a brilliant touch with short stories in her collection, "Mum And Mr. Armitage". The book is a collection of 12 short stories that are all wonderful studies of Human Nature that are often unsettling either due to what they reveal at their conclusion, or to the degree they let the reader fill in the final details and discomfort.

Short stories are wonderful in that they challenge the writer to communicate ideas in various lengths, however brief. Ms. Bainbridge not only sets up what seems to be a straightforward experience that may indeed be familiar, only to surprise, shock, or to demonstrate just how subtle her view of Human Behavior is observed and written. The stories may initially appear when read to seem perfectly appropriate, even familiar, that the Author is able to make detailed and definitive observations and conclusions that most people would at best only have a sense of, is the gift she exercises.

The story that is also the title of the book gives no hint at the ending. The story is about fun-loving types on Holiday that paint the horns of cattle in paint that glows at night, and other harmless fun. The final sentence will chill your spine. Truth is an oft repeated theme, however the manner in which it is presented is always unique, "The Worst Policy, and The Man That Blew Away", were excellent, the last remarkable.

Ms. Bainbridge is a wonderful writer you will not be disappointed.

provides insight into the author's life and her works
"My Dear Mr. M" is a collection of letters L. M. Montgomery wrote to Mr. G. B. MacMillan, a fellow writer. In the letters, the reader gets glimpses of how Montgomery felt about her own work, as well as mentions of contemporary reviews. Very interesting, for books that went on to become classics. Likewise, we get Montgomery's (somewhat brief) opinions on WWI, WWII, and other events that changed the century. A must-read for fans of Montgomery.

The Mysterious Mr. Ross
After breaking something of her mother's with her butter fingers, Felicity ran outside to the gulf. While there she noticed a man trying to get across. Felicity shouted down to him saying, "You can't cross here, it's not safe." He heard her but said that he could not go back because it was worse behind him. Felicity got a stick and held it out to him. He jumped into the water and held onto the stick. The stick broke, leaving the man defenseless against the rushing water. Felicity's eyes grew large as she looked for the man in the water. She found him clinging on the side of the rock she was standing on, and quickly helped him up. They went through the flooded city until they reached Felicity's house. The stranger collapsed before reaching the door and so Felicity rushed inside to get help. Later going back to the gulf, Felicity found a skull, an albatross skull. At home, Felicity's mother approached the man asking him his name. The man looked around the room focusing on a picture with a big label saying, albatross. "Albert Ross," he says.

This book, like all others, was interesting. I was expecting more excitement and adventure, but I also wanted more mystery. I wasn't really interested in this book as much as I would have been if it were more of a mystery. I could guess what was going to happen in the end of the story before it even told me. Vivien Alcock is a great writer and I think that she did well with this book. I would rate this book a four because although it wasn't very exciting, I did want to finish it.

the legendary Balanchine
Those of us who knew, worked for, or studied with George Balanchine, would call him "Mr. B.", with friendship and respect, and sometimes a mixture of awe and fear.
This marvelous collection of photographs captures the many moods of this incredibly complex man, and his intensity. He was the most influential choreographer of the 20th century, and his legacy is beyond measure.

The Foreword is written by Peter Martins, who took the leadership of the New York City Ballet when Balanchine passed this earthly plane in 1983 at the age of 79.
There is a wonderful photo of the two men on page 127; two profiles, one the aged master, the other, the youthful, handsome Dane, perfect danseur noble, who became Balanchine's lead male dancer during the '70s.
The twenty page Essay by Lincoln Kirstein I found to be totally confounding, written in a very convoluted style, and perhaps if one is a lot smarter than I am, it is understandable.
"Two Talks with George Balanchine", by Jonathan Cott however, is very interesting. Mr. Cott's intelligent, probing questions elicit some insightful answers.
"Three Sides of Agon" by Edwin Derby is a piece on the great ballet, which was a magnificent collaboration between Balanchine and Igor Stravinsky. As a piece of music, Agon is one of my favorite Stravinsky compositions, and the stark, extraordinary choreography made this a groundbreaking ballet.

There is a section that describes the photographs, and then the heart of the book, the fascinating collection of images.
The first one is from 1904, the year of his birth, with his wet nurse.
Other remarkable photos are: from 1924, dancing with his first wife Tamara Geva (who said he was a mix of poet and a general); 1929, dancing with Felia Doubrovska, who was a beloved teacher of mine, and she looks exquisite here; on page 68, a lovely study of Balanchine playing the piano. He was an excellent pianist until he lost part of a finger in a lawnmower accident; 1937, with his second wife, Vera Zorina; 1948, an exotic posed photo by Irving Penn for Vogue Magazine of Mr. B. with his third wife, Maria Tallchief, and also from '48, the George Platt Lynes (who chronicled Balanchine's life) photo of a Symphony in C rehearsal with Tanaquil LeClercq (wife # 4) and Francisco Moncion; 1963, in rehearsal for Movements for Piano and Orchestra with the beautiful Diana Adams, and the terrific Jacques d'Amboise, by Martha Swope, a noted dance photographer who made many contributions to this book, and did my favorite image, of Mr. B. with his cat Mourka.

Published in 1984, this small book of 154 pages has 76 black and white photos, good quality paper in a matte finish, and for some of us, many memories.

The Review of Mr. Campion
I appreciate the Campion Mysteries. They are well written books that have great casts of charactors and have wonderful plots. I have also seen the Campion Mysteries on televsion when it was shown on the public chanel. I like how determined the charactor of Mr. Campion is when he is solving mysteries, but he is always the gentleman and never forgets his manners. I find the idea of Mr. Campion having a friend, sidekick and butler named Lug amusing. Lug used to be a thief until Mr. Campion aided in his capture and they became friends. I have a hard time setting the books down when I get started. I recommend the Campion books for anyone who likes mysteries.

Trouble in Radiant City.
In the world of tommorow, a man tries to stop a monster of his own creation. His monster is a city whose very structure can drive a person to madness. In addition, the city holds secrets that can enable a wilier individual to control it's inhabitants. Those who know him are either dead, or unwilling to betray him. He remains a mystery. This was the first graphic novel I had read. Although the artwork is simplistic, the story of obsession makes it a thrilling example of graphic novels.

A Strange, But Very Human Little Novel
Laurence Sterne's 1768 novel, "A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy," is a strange and largely plotless book - less the recounting of a journey than of Parson Yorick's ramblings. Following the wildly successfuly, and no less diffuse "Tristram Shandy," Sterne crafts a much smaller, but no less intense work, recounting the misadventures of Parson Yorick, himself a character in the earlier novel. Labelling himself a 'sentimental traveler,' Yorick's account of his travels is not descriptive, but emotive, revealing his conflicted, if warm-hearted psychology.

The novel begins abruptly in the middle of a conversation between Yorick and his servant over a French policy in the eighteenth century of seizing the property of a foreigner who dies in France. Eager to discover the truth of the matter, Yorick impulsively throws a few shirts in a bag and before the next day ends, lands in Calais, France. Upon his arrival, his initial purpose, like many which he determines on in the course of the book, is forgotten, as his mind drifts from topic to topic as things and people happen to cross his sight. What remains of the novel are a series of pathetic and amorous adventures, in which Yorick's senses of morality, propriety, and common sense are brought into constant conflict with his impetuous nature and good humored guile.

Sterne is too intelligent and expert a writer to allow sentiment, what we might call sappy nonsense, to rule the day in his novel, and the scrapes Yorick get himself into are as much a critique of pure sentiment as an exploration of the uses and practicality of human sympathy. Sterne is playing with a recent tradition of moral philosophy, including the likes of such authors as Shaftesbury and Adam Smith, the latter of whose "Theory of Moral Sentiments" (1759) was at the forefront of popularizing and pragmatizing fellow-feeling. Sterne uses the excitable and impulsive Yorick to play with these ideas, along with those of his acquaintance, David Hume, whose notions of moral aesthetics marked a radical departure from the aforementioned predecessors. Out of all of these high flown philosophical traditions, Sterne fashions a witty and clever series of scenarios - from eating with peasants, bantering with a monk, flirting with a married woman while her husband indifferently watches, and nearly getting thrown in the Bastille - all display a very human look at the world.

Encounters between Yorick and various classes and characters in France illustrate the distance between theory and practice in terms of implementing any kind of systematic philosophy - even, and especially for a man of the cloth, like our protagonist. Yorick means well most of the time, which makes his faults and foibles all the more endearing and amusing. By his own admission, Yorick is constantly falling in love, perhaps to give his bachelor life some sense of chivalric purpose, but when he starts falling in love with every chamber-maid and noblewoman in France, we begin to question, not only his sincerity, but the capacity of his sexual and emotional appetites. It makes for hilarious episodes, especially when his French servant, La Fleur, is dragged into the middle of them.

A forerunner of the focused genre of sentimental fiction like Mackenzie's "The Man of Feeling" and the more refined imaginative sensibilities of many Romantic Era authors, Sterne's little novel, along with "Tristram Shandy" made immediate cultural impact, not only in England, but throughout Europe. Sometimes confusing, often amusing, reading Sterne's "Sentimental Journey" is a great way to while away a summer afternoon.
