Killer Thriller
Here's an original and refreshing thriller. Part crime novel with a cyber/SF thriller riff. The story revolves around 2 characters Robin Carlson daughter of a U.S. general and all round funky, rebllious grrrl,oh,and part-time bouncer on the side. The 2nd character is Wolf a homeless man and pavement artist who's past is a mystery.Unfortunately Wolf seems to be on someone's hitlist so trouble surrounds his every squat. These 2 inhabit a dark world of experimental drugs and the strong preying on the vulnerable and the lost. All set against the underbelly of Amsterdam(Van Der Valk eat your heart out). A terrific thriller Sue Rann is an author to watch. Oh, and watch out for the men in black, they do exist you know.

A grip like steel pincers and a punch like Tyson!
I am so happy with this book! When people give books as gifts, sometimes they're way off the mark - but not with this one. I didn't mean to read it so quickly, but it grabbed me on page one and didn't let me get any sleep till I'd finished it! (Well, OK, maybe one or two hours' naptime) The two main characters rock: there's Robin, an American girl in Europe. Her heroine is Lara Croft, but she's more like a disaster looking for a place to happen! She's smart-mouthed, sassy, and rather vulnerable under a tough outer shell. My fave was the other main character, Wolf. He's a vagrant with a mysterious past, and is rather sexily shambly and helpless, as well as being pretty damn heroic when the chips are down, but without being a 'hero' in the usual sense of the word. Ffwwoarr!! Move over Harrison Ford! The plot's very dark and X-Filesish, and it marries with the setting of the wintertime city so well, the atmosphere's really eerie and shadowy. I'd not only recommend this book, I'm a wine buyer, so I'd recommend a comfy armchair, a nice robust Cab-Merlot, a packet of biscuits, a pillow and a warm fire - 'cos this book seriously won't let you put it down till you've finished it. Don't say I didn't warn you! And have fun! HAPPY HAL ;-)

Does not measure up to Stoppard's plays
In reading CONVERSATIONS WITH STOPPARD, I came accross an interview in which Stoppard said that he was more satisfied with his novel, LORD MALQUIST AND MR. MOON, than with any of his plays. Now, I am a Stoppard fanatic and have read most of his plays, and I have no idea what posessed him to make such a statement. LORD MALQUIST AND MR. MOON is a very good book, and I would be impressed were it from almost any other author. For the author of gems like ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, ROUGH CROSSING, and JUMPERS, however, this novel is a bit disappointing. The style is unmistakably Stoppard (don't get me wrong -- this is a must read for any Stoppard devotee), but the plot is a bit muddled, and it is hard to identify with the characters (whereas everyone can identify with the lack of control felt over his own life by Rosencrantz). Overall, a good novel, but not vintage Stoppard

Awesome.
I have to disagree with the other reviewer. I think this book fully measures up to his plays. While reading the novel, I had the sense almost of watching a film. The book is fast-paced, exhilirating, and very funny. The humour is vintage Stoppard, and it reads much like some of the long monologues in Jumpers and Travesties. I think the characters are incredible fascinating and found it very easy to connect w/ Mr. Moon. Overall, a wonderful book and a joyous read. Highly recommended!

Minding Mr. Market: Ten Years on Wall Street With Grant's Interest Rate Observer

Surprisingly good
A series of vignettes from the early 80s to the early 90s. I love these "time capsule" books.

Grant is a good author, and he is bearish, which is instinctually satisfying for most creatures.

Insightful, witty analysis of the market and market players
Mr. Grant's analysis and insight into market inconsistencies, anomalies, and absurdities is refreshing in this age of me too financial journalism. The articles, taken from Grant's Interest Rate Observer, are as original in thought as they are uncompromising in their logic. I am a finance professional and feel that this book is a must read for any young entrant into the field. This perennial bear can teach even the most ardent bull to reflect before they leap. Beware if you've been nurtured on Money Magazine!

Movies Mr Griffith and Me

Wonderful look into a bygone era
This book was great way to see what the early days of movie-making were like. It was a valuable tool for a history paper on which I received an A. Its richness of detail really helped me with the amount for research I needed to do for the class and it was an entirely enjoyable read to boot. I hope the publisher will reprint this book. I hate to think that people like the fabulous Miss Gish will be forgotten.

An Extremely Entertaining and Extremely Important Work
By today's standards, Lillian Gish's performances in silent film seem mannered--but during the 1910s and 1920s they were nothing short of revolutionary, for unlike most actors of the era Gish was determined to perform in as natural a manner as possible. In doing so, she literally pioneered screen acting technique as we now know it, and it would be extremely difficult to over-estimate her artistic impact.

Although Gish worked with numerous directors over the course of her extremely long career, she is most specifically remembered for her association with D.W. Griffith, whose pioneering silent films firmly established what Gish would describe as "the grammar" of modern cinema. As one might guess from its title, a good portion of THE MOVIES, MR. GRIFFITH, & ME is devoted to Griffith, and it offers a first-hand account of Griffith, the challenges he faced, and the evolution of film from extremely primitive one-reels into a sophistocated art form during the 1910s; those interested in film history will be particularly fascinated by Gish's accounts of the filming of two landmark silents, BIRTH OF A NATION and INTOLERANCE.

Other star autobiographies frequently turn into kiss and tell sagas, but Gish is extremely respectful of those she describes and discreet about her private life to a remarkable degree; consequently, THE MOVIES, MR. GRIFFITH, & ME is less the story of a life than it is the story of a career. But what a career it was! The tone of the book is at once lady-like but extremely readable, and even those who have little interest in the early days of the motion picture industry will find it fascinating stuff. This is an extremely readable book--but it is also an extremely important historical document as well, and the fact that it is out of print is appalling. If you have any interest in the history of motion pictures, you cannot afford to miss this book. Seek it out and keep it handy on the shelf, for it is strongly, strongly recommended.

Excellent sentence structure and character development.
Jaime Espiritu has a command of the English language unparalleled by the average American. With an occasional blip for English-as-a 2nd-language, he comes through his characters in full, descriptive style, and his writing reads as we would speak the thoughts--flowingly enticing the reader to his next thought. The Mr. and Ms. characters are vehicles for dealing with human issues and human nature, and the author provokes readers to find and relate to their underlying feelings and struggles. These stories reach inside of you and find the hidden places of your heart and mind. Though short stories, like 30-min TV programs with plots to wrap up in limited time/space, however delightful, may imply easy solutions and strong subject knowledge, we will need more books from Jaime Espiritu to know if he has, indeed, the answers to human nature's dilemmas in the pursuit of happiness. Keep the books coming Mr. Espiritu. We look forward to the next one.

An adorable work on the lives we live today. A must read!!!
I picked up this book from a local boosktore while I was on travel in the east coast and wow, I never put it down again as soon as I turned the first page. I'v never bought a book that did that to me. The four novellas are so wonderfully written, the stories told so vividly, the characters so real. You see yourself in them, in their daily lives! And I laughed, and I sorta had to blink some tears away, both sad and joyful, at one time or another. I feel good, and really happy I read this book.

A must have for any "Wahoo"!
As a 1995 graduate of UVA, I found this book to be extremely educational. I only wish I had purchased it as an undergrad so I could have wandered the Grounds finding the areas Mr. Dabney wrote of. Mr. Dabney was an expert on UVA and Mr. Jefferson. I look forward to reading more of his work.

1930s Faculty Brat
As a faculty brat in the 1930s,I literally grew up on the UVA grounds. On reading my first copy of Mr. Dabney's book (he was a close personal friend of my parents) I was struck by the rich lode of information verifying much that had been rumor during my teens. My dad, Dr. James C.Bardin a medical doctor, opted to teach Romance Languages. He is mentiond in the book. Mr. Jefferson's University sparkles with vivid memories of a delightful time in my youth. It is a wonderful historical document written so as to interest just about anyone who likes Virginia, and especially the UVA.

Both the story and the pictures are whimsical
This is a fun book! Don't forget to study the illustrations thoroughly. The scene in the doctor's office is worth the price of the book all by itself.

Mr. Mumble is a GREAT book for Kids of all ages!!
I thought that Mr. Mumble was a great book and it can be enjoyed by kids of all ages. It's not only a good book it is also a comedy. Who would have ever thought that Mr. Mumble would go the whole day not knowing that he had a bird down his throat. Also, i think it is so funny how when he goes do his shopping he asks for something and they always give him something that he didn't ask for like when he asks for bagels they give him a beegle. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Thank You

an excellent biography of this great actor
As a Scottish mother-of-four, I have found no better role model for my children than Mr T. This book was enjoyed by all my children, although I do wish they'd skipped over or at least tone down some of the stuff from the early A-team days; I had to explain to my eight-year-old what 'freebasing' meant, which was definitely an uncomfortable experience for all concerned! Aside from that, it's great to see that Mr T still has a career, with the many new movies he's working on that are mentioned in this book.

I pity da fool!
In the words of the great man himself, "There's no way I'm gettin' on that airplane, and I don't wanna drink my milk!"

I think there's something in that for all of us.

sympathetic characterizations of the "upper class"
These are two easy reading books that consist of short episodes in the lives of an "upper class" couple in Kansas City in the 1930s and 40s. Each book progresses through their lives, so you see them age and their children grow. The book "Mrs Bridge", characterizes her as a true ditz, the kinds who always says meaningless "right" things and rich woman preoccupied with shopping. Mr. Bridge is characterized as a remote, clueless kind of guy. The book ends with Mr. Bridge's death and his son sadly recognizing that his dad spent all his life trying to make life better for his family when all his family really wanted was some time with him. Showing the biases of the time of publication, Mr. Bridge becomes much more humane and likeable in the book about him. In "Mr. Bridge," even the annoying Mrs. Bridge is much more likeable. Even though set long ago, there are all sorts of insights that are very human. Everyone can see themselves in this book somewhere.

Excellent character study in Mr. & Mrs. Bridge
Connell does a superlative job of illustrating upper-middle class society in the 30's and 40's with these two novels. Each is a series of vignettes that serves to illuminate the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, through their interactions with each other, their family and the society they live in. Subtle, richly textured and very real - these are the people that lived ordinary lives. I recognized people I know in these portraits

Whoa...
The freak show in this manga is really, really, REALLY freaky. I kind of feel for the protagonist's suffering even though she really isn't a "freak" per se. The story and art rather disturbed me, yet I did, somehow, enjoy it. I recommend this to folks who have a strong stomach and a twistedly open mind...

Mister Arashi's Amazing Freak Show
Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show falls within the "grotesque manga" genere of modern Japanese comics, and should not be read by those of weak heart, stomach, or wit. The story follows the main character, Midori, on her unfortunate side-show life, filled with laborous days, dangerous nights, and dark twists of reality. Maruo's compelling, complex imagery is unparalelled by satyrical and ironic storytelling mixed with poetic nuances.

I was very impressed by the story presentation and layout of this book. True to its Japanese content, the publishers have refrained from flopping pages and attempting to erase large page portions to hide katakana sound effects and kanji banners. Almost every minute detail is translated for the Engish reading eye; and though this book does read "backwards" by Engilsh standards, to preserve the original art masterpieces, this is by no means an obstacle to overcome. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in Japanese subculture; it gives true insight into the hidden layers of Japan.
