Swimming in Chocolate
My eight year old son has been begging me for this book for at least a couple of years. Mr. Mike came to his kindergarten class and read some of the poems and we missed the chance to get the book then. Our school library had one copy, it was taken out the first time and never returned. Our local book stores say it is unavailable. Well we checked here and there it was. My son and 6 year old daughter love the funny, easy to read poems. Since it was so hard to find, I am sure most any child would like it.

Theodor and Mr. Balbini

funny and wise
I can't find my hardcover copy right now, so I hope this gets a reprint...but this is a hilarious book with the serious theme: people (and dogs) change and what was good or at least comfortable for them at some point doesn't always last. Theodor, Mr Balbini's old dog, suddenly is able to talk and he starts to pepper Mr Balbini with demands. Mr Balbini realizes that he misses Theodor, the Theodor who was before. Happily for all involved, a new dog comes into MrBalbini's life, and a new owner for Theodor and everyone ends up happy in the swap. A happy ending for the kids, and truth, but necessarily the sad truth, for adults. The art is lovely and funny at the same time, too.

A young girl corresponds with President Jefferson.
Amelia Hornsby is a twelve-year-old schoolgirl living in Philadelphia in 1803. She soon plans to join her widowed father on the frontier in Pittsburgh, but in the meantime she's living with his friend, Dr. Rush. When she suspects a visitor of being a foreign spy, she writes to President Thomas Jefferson, who, to her surprise writes back, telling her that the visitor is his secretary Meriwether Lewis, who will soon lead an expedition to the Pacific coast with the help of William Clark. Even after Amelia goes to live in Pittsburgh, she continues to correspond with the President. This was a fascinating book, written in the form of letters between Amelia and President Jefferson, that reveals what life might have been like for an educated, inquisitive young girl in the early 1800s.

Too Many Notes, Mr. Mozart

Had Mozart lived to the age of 73, he might have fallen out of favor, becoming a "largely forgotten, neglected, unperformed composer." At least that's the premise of Bastable's historical mystery Too Many Notes, Mr. Mozart, in which an aging Mozart is sent to the English court of William IV to tutor 11-year-old Princess Victoria in music. Soon the child has her doting tutor wrapped around her finger and convinces him to spy on her mother and her illicit paramour. When the young Victoria's life is threatened, Mozart finds himself in a royal tangle--unable to trust anyone and increasingly fearful for his own life.

An Extremely Likeable Trio
Wolfgang Gottlieb Mozart is an aging and neglected composer who, in 1830, is summoned to Kensington Palace to give piano lessons to eleven year-old Princess Victoria, the niece of King George IV. Mozart takes an immediate liking to the charming Victoria and sensing that her life may be in danger, decides to try to protect her. After King George IV dies, Princess Victoria becomes heir apparent to the throne and William IV is the new king. The book has a light-hearted tone. Victoria, Mozart and William IV are an extremely likeable trio and the plot is nicely resolved.

Description: Inside Front Dust Cover
This collection includes some of Stevenson's greatest works. Treasure Island, published in 1883, was his first major novel. It is a tale of daring, treachery, and greed climaxing ina battle for hidden treasure on a tropical island. First published in 1886 Kidnapped was considered by Stevenson to be his finest work of fiction and is a tribute to his fascination with his Scottish heritage.

The remaining selections place Stevenson as a master of the art of fiction. He was working on Weirof Hermiston when he died while dictating it to this stepdaugher

A Trellis for Mr. Ellis Or, How I Saved the World from Global Warming
Published in Paperback by Allcat Pr (June, 2001)
Authors: Louisa May Allcat, T. K. Deaton, and A. G. Ellis
Amazon base price: $8.95
Average review score:

Whimsical and charming lesson in ecology
Louisa May Allcat, the "author" of this instructive tale, tells how Mr. Ellis found her abandoned and gave her a home. However, the balcony where Louisa spends her time overlooks an ugly urban alleyway. She and Mr. Ellis decide to make the balcony pretty with potted plants, whose trellises hide the ugly view. Other neighbors like the idea, and plants are brought into one apartment after another, one city after another. The effect of the greening of the cities fights global warming. Adults as well as children should enjoy the gentle humor of this good hearted story.

True Mint: Mr Mint's Price & Investment Guide to True Mint Baseball Cards
Published in Paperback by Krause Publications (November, 1994)
Authors: Al Rosen, Mark K. Larson, and T. S. O'Connell
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $1.95
Average review score:

The DEFINITIVE introduction to baseball card collecting!
Al Rosen is one of the most brash and self promoting dealers in the world. He certainly doesn't need to write a book to pay the rent, but fortunately he did. This book, although somewhat dated, is an essential read for anyone considering diving into the collecting of baseball cards. A quick and interesting read that you will find guiding you from beginning to advanced collecting. His insights on the trends of card grading and Tiffany sets are the only areas that where he has seemed to be proved wrong (for the time being, at least). His "Mr. Mint's Maxim's" are rules to live by before making any card purchases. Amongst all the books on baseball cards, this one truly is a "gem"!
