I read this book in ninth grade
It was my grandfather's. I had to do a book report for my ninth grade English class. I think the book was published about 1940. I'm not sure.

Never a Better Twain Shall Meet
This scholarly and readable life of Twain begins with his thirties and carries the master humorist through the glorious successes and bitter tragedies that would haunt him. Well written and full of insightful analysis into his real character this book brings to life a persoanlity so large that it took a new era (Gilded Age) and two centuries to contain it! For his boyhood try Deep Waters- an equally good review of his wit and life.

The Border Between Reality and Clever Clever Land
This is a short fabulous story in the powerfully beautiful Hargreaves Mr Men & Little Miss series. What happens to Mr Clever when he passes beyond the boundary of his Cleverland? He finds for all his cleverness, he has little practical knowledge. A friend of mine said to me that this is similar to college graduates who, after leaving university, find little practical application for all their clever thoughts. This is very true and this small book would make a good joke gift for graduates for this reason. You will find many small but profound similarities between the characters in these little books. They are sharp and witty looks at single aspects of people's personalities. No doubt adults as well as children will draw much enjoyment from them.

So Adorable!
This is one of the CUTEST preschool books I've ever read! 10 Little Mosters is an exceptional read for little ones--with amazing pictures and cute lyrics, it completely keeps the child's attention all the way through... I definitely think this short book is a keeper for any preschooler! :)

A charming adventure which subtly encourages young readers
Mr. Crumb's Secret is a delightful and enthusiastically recommended story by Phyllis J. Perry for young readers ready to make the transition from picturebooks to more challenging fare. Fribble Mouse uses his library know-how to learn about his neighbor's mysterious new hobby, in a charming adventure which subtly encourages young readers to make the most of school and community library resources.

Superb! A delight to read. My baby's favorite.
A witty story that amuses the reader as much as the listener. The illustrations are stick in the memory like classic tune, making it a family favorite. Why, oh why cannot all books be as good as this?

Nota Bander
Edward Bander's Mr. Dooley and Mr. Dunne (1981)is a modern classic and a reference work worth acquiring. Bander's book is a "cultural mirror" of an era where political discourse was a part of everyday life as opposed to the exclusive province of spin doctors. Dunne's character of Mr. Dooley has an enduring quality. I also learned from Mr. Bander's book that many familiar allusions originate with Mr. Dooley. Bander notes that in the Boston Globe, October 5, 1902 that Mr. Dooleys says: "Th' newspaper does ivrything fr us. It runs th' polis foorce an'th' banks, commands th'milishy, conthrols the'legislachure, baptizes th' young, marries th' foolish, comforts th' afflicted, afflicts th' comfortable, buries th' dead an' roasts thim aftherward." Dunne's concept comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable is a phrase that applies equally well to the 2000 election. It is probably not surprising that Professor Bander dons a baseball cap: Gore-Lieberman 2000, Comforing the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable! I also strongly recommend Bander's book on Shakespeare and the Law.

A Beautiful Book!
I just returned from the first day of the NCTE conference in NYC where I attended a session on using picture books in the secondary classroom in conjunction with American classics. Judith Byron Schachner was in attendance and read her wonderful book in a mellifluous Irish brogue. This book is not just for young children. It is a terrific way to introduce high school students to Emerson and Transcendentalism.

MR. EVIL... I THINK NOT
A great novel to read for interest of human behaviour and true crime. I found it on both levels a 'tell a friend' book. I have I just cant give my copy out. I feel the need to connect with David and if given the chance I would. I also feel that it was not evil in him but all psycho problematic individuals start off being anti-social and this was very obvious to me from when he was young. So indeed I feel sympathy for David thus he was a loner with low self-esteem. The book identifies him as 'crazy' and yes at one point he did turn that way as we can too. The mind is a very powerful tool and he lied to himself and believed it. We all lie to ourselves about something now and then dont we. Mr. Evil is not evil nor is he psycho. He believed in past happenings that he did not let go thus forcing his brain into that state. Given a proper start I believe he could be , and was, your average 'person'. I LOVED THIS BOOK AND ANALIZING HIM. I WISH ONE DAY TO MEET THE MAN HIDING BEHIND A COLD MASK OF HATRED WHICH IS [not real]

a library essential
This book is surely one of the top on my list for recommended readings. Children enjoy the story and look forward to reading on the book. It is divided into chapters, giving time to review what happened in the section. IT does not include any comprehension questions or anything like that, but I like to ask my students of their opinion, etc. The story promotes good values and is an ideal children's book
