i know why the caged bird sings? This unique book of text passages in a "cutout font" over illustrated collages is dedicated to the author's uncle, John Kang, and based on a New York Times article from June 1994. Mr Kang is having his 70th birthday party in New York City's Chinatown. There with his friends, family, and grandson, he makes three wishes: To read The New York Times every morning, to paint a poem each day, and to have his own caged hua mei bird, which will go with him every Sunday to Sara Delano Roosevelt Park. As the reader continues through the book, its story, poems, and its collages (one of a background of Chinese menus, another of alters, another of NYT newsprint, one of SDR Park), Sam is met. Sam, Mr Kang's grandson, comes to visit his grandparents for the weekend. On Sunday, he, his grandfather, the hua mei bird, and a warm cake from his grandmother make their way after dawn to the park. Soon there are 27 other caged bird there waiting to sing. Sam wonders whether it is right to keep the bird caged, just like grandpa was caged to his work before retirement. Will grandpa let the bird fly free? What do grandma and the retired men think? What does the hua mei bird desire? Read and discover.

Excellence - pure and simpleThis book covers so many diverse and fascinating subjects and shows how they are intimately connected. The fields of science, religion, inspiration and music are interwoven in such an intricate and delicate web that is beautifully represented in this book. It was a pleasure to read because it brought to my conciousness so many amazing concepts. The message contained in this book has stayed with me and I find myself realizing it's truth more and more each day.

Honest to Goodness is very true..........I am a Springfield, Illinois native and can tell you that these recipes are well known in the Springfield area. The recipes in this book are very very good.
Some of my favorites include.....Lemon Shake-Ups as seen at the Illinois State Fair, Steak Diane as served at Baur's On the Green, Funnel Cakes And the all time Springfield favorite... HORSESHOES... if you don't know what this is I urge you to buy the book for that recipe alone! You will love it!

One chapter in here is about me...Many, many years ago this author was my English teacher in Virginia. I read most of this book back then - it was serialized in a hunting magazine if I recall - and am buying a copy here now. If you are a fan of hunting hounds and the legends and history that accompany such a culture, then you will want this book. I'm the kid with the horn-rimmed glasses; though the glasses are gone the awe and wonder associated with new experiences has never faded.

With 80 pages of coloring fun, kids are sure to keep the "Wholiday" spirit alive this Christmas! Based on Dr. Seuss's classic picture book, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and the motion picture screenplay of the same name, this rhyming coloring book is chock-full of lively illustrations of the Grinch (in young and old incarnations), his faithful dog, Max, and the stubbornly cheerful Whos of Whoville. Color in the pictures and tear them out to post on the fridge or give to a favorite friend. But wait, there's more! The back cover features a paper doll cutout of a very grumpy looking Grinch in Santa wear. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

Palmer "captures" Victorian England much the way Dickens didPalmer's third book in this "series" continues to capture Victorian England; he is able to evoke the landscape and atmosphere of the time, of
the place, and of the characters. Most don't.
Aside from Anne Perry and Michael Crichton's
"Great Train Robbery," I have not read such
convincing Victoriana and the accompanying
hypocrisy. Palmer is able to sustain the reader's
interest throughout, particularly with his use of
other "real" characters such as Florence Nightingale. He is able to make Dickens
quite the human character!

Timeless...Made me smileI read this book nearly 7 years ago and still remember a few of the anecdotes with fondness. At the time I was 13 and could appreciate the simple logic of Mr. Lincoln and his sparkling wit. I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a nostalgic read that won't confront you with questions about Lincoln's political ambitions or racial attitudes. It is simply about a man, famous though he may have been, he was also smart and funny. In an age when humor is all about hurtful, shock-value jokes, this reminds us that it takes far more to make someone laugh and be able to do so more than 100 years after you are gone.
Foxes are never far away, and many of Surtees' best characters give them several good runs for their money.
If you only have time for one Surtees book, go for this one: it is the essence of the thing.
My favourite line is Jorrocks' epitaph - "hic iacet Jorrocks".
