Love, Doubt, Betrayal. Void. One death, long ago, stains the innocence of the present with the pus of ancient corruption. It is a search for truth, rather than revenge, that drives the story, but it proves to be a truth that brings no release.
India is evoked with astonishing richness and depth, while remaing a backdrop for the characters, who are vivid and rounded, but always with more to reveal as the dream draws them on.
I read this book some months ago, but it haunts me still.

Revealed the good old days weren't so good.I often think we spend so much of our time wishing we lived in a kindler, gentler time -- a time past when things were simpler. Dorothy Parker's stories made me realize that life is life and it ain't easy, no matter what the year. The reader's smoky voice is perfect for the collection. As she told each tale, I felt as if she were reaching right into my chest and clenching my heart in her brightly-manicured grip. The stories are revealing. I found myself haunted by "Mr. Durant" days afterward. I can say that I came away from this collection changed in some way. How, precisely, I cannot say. It is too soon to tell, since I just finished the last story yesterday. I do recommend them, however, if only to show readers of this day how very different life in Dorothy Parker's day.

Orwellians - Find this BookI had never heard of the author or the book when I picked up a British edition at a used bookstore. I had hoped that anyone writing a novel on Orwell would possess Orwell's virtues of directness, frankness, and lucidity while offering up some ideas. Caute succeeds on all fronts, and in some matters of technique he is clearly Orwell's superior. He also has a sense of humor and his characters - including Orwell himself - are more nuanced than any Orwell character.
The book's story is about Orwell researching Animal Farm. He finds the book's narrator - a boy named Alex - hanging on at the family farm after his Mum and Dad have both abandoned it. There are pigs and other animals whose names will be familiar to the reader. Alex fills us in on his contributions to both Animal Farm and 1984 and his continuing relationship with Orwell. The last page of Alex's narrative contains a surprise which is perhaps intended to show that - as Orwell says in the novel - Orwell is often wrong.
Caute himself has written 8 other novels and 10 non-fiction books, including several on the left, communism and fellow travellers.

The greatest fiction book out there today! The characters in this book were great, they were decribed in full detail. The tranformation of one man, was a great idea, on the part of Robert Louis Stevenson. I would recommend this book to any, on any given day. The depth of the description was outstanding, Hopefully you will be lucky, like I was, and will get the chance to read this.

MasterpieceA astounding collection of classic tales of the macabre. Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde takes up about half of the book; the remainder contains storie such as Markhiem, The Bottle Imp, and the Body Snatcher. Written in a fast paced, articulate manner, this book leaves one hanging at the edge of his seat. I hope you don't fall off.

He Practices Not PreachesSam Barklis is that rare human being who turned what can be a debilitating disorder into an avenue in which to help many, many other people. My wife is bi-polar and has been for forty-seven years, but until she met Dr. Sam, she suffered a continual series of hospitalizations, shock therapy and inept psychiatry
practiced by psychiatrists who only thought they knew about this disorder. Dr. Sam has her on the road to being "level" and I do wish all bi-polar people could benefit from his vast wisdom and the thrill of being level and not subject to the radical ups and downs of this disorder. The book was a most insightful journey into the life of a bi-polar personality, but because of his modesty, only failed to touch on the magnificience of the man who not only lives it but gives, not hope, but realization of a
"miracle" in my opinion and the concensus of opinions of every life he touches. Should be required reading for all physicians
and psychiatric medicine practioners.
