Tutt and Mr Tutt
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (June, 1979)
Author: Arthur Train
Amazon base price: $25.95
Used price: $4.50
Collectible price: $10.00
Average review score:

An excellent and entertaining collection of stories.
Train offers here a fine set of stories about a caring and cantankerous lawyer from the turn of the century. Other books about Tutt include 'Tut,Tut, Mr. Tutt', 'Old Man Tutt' and the autobiographical, "Yankee Lawyer".

Excellent collection of short stories.
The elderly Mr Tutt and his junior partner Tutt spend their time defending the downtrodden innocent (and occasionally the guilty - but they'll never admit it - at least to the judge) and making the most rascally prosecutors and lawyers look like the fools they are. A highly entertaining set of short stories, with many interesting legal tidbits (many of which, I suspect, no longer are true). The author was a lawyer himself, and has created the most interesting protagonist since the Saint (or more properly, before the Saint). Highly recommended.

Long lost gem of a boy's coming of age story
I was thrilled to find this book available in the "used" section - such a shame it's no longer in print. I first discovered it in elementary school, over 16 years ago. I was lucky enough to have a librarian who trusted me to read the things "not on the shelf" (despite its controversial nature) to give her my kid-sized opinion. It was very much unlike me at the time to zip through a book so quickly, but this one was among the first to so motivate me. (It centers around a school boy and the year he spends getting to know and starting to care for his gay teacher - and his growing confusion over why his 1950's suburban town is in such an uproar over how Mr. Forster lives his personal life). I had no idea what the words "queer" or "homosexual" meant at the time, but the tone of them was unmistakable and saddening. I for one an thankful to Gary Bargar for sharing this story on a level a young kid could relate to (and to my librarian for not allowing "controversy" to shield me from a beautiful story). It was one of the major stepping stones that has led to a life lived with an open mind and an open heart. This book really means a lot to me, and I am so glad to finally have my own copy.

What Happened to Mr. Forster?
Discovered to be living in a gay relationship, Mr Forster, a sixth grade teacher, is pressured to resign by parents. Set in 1950s America, the story is told from the viewpoint of Louis, one of Forster's pupils, whose personality growth the teacher has helped.

The World's Best Yiddish Dirty Jokes

funny
This is a funny book. Whenever I used to think of Yiddish humor, I thought of Jackie Mason, Groucho Marx, Woody Allen.

Now I learn that theirs was just Jewish humor. The Jews really get their humor from the Yiddish. Now whenever I think of Yiddish humor, I think of this book and I fall off my chair laughing. Buy this book!

So it ain't Shakespeare....
But it IS a unique way to practice and learn Yiddish (including some terms you won't find in the usual Yiddish stories, works). And it IS humorous and it does have a uniquely Jewish slant. Not ALL the jokes are dirty, by the way. If you like ethnic or cultural humor, this one is worth buying.

Double your pleasure....
The Wrong Mr. Right...I couldn't put it down! I was laying in bed, giggling so hard at the slapstick dialogue that is so true-to- life! It was so romantic, too. Barrie and Carissa remind me of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks or Richard Gere and Julia Roberts! They were so believable and swept me away into their little wirlwind of romance. Kudos Miss Wainscott! :-) Never Say Never... Zeke, the ever popular sheriff who is afraid of doilies...too funny! Tish, the debuntante who is afraid of everyone until...I love the small town life, as I come from one and it is blended so well in this book where everybody knows your name...This is action packed, hilarious and the sensual undertones are great! This Duets is definitley worth the money and I have put it in my pile that I will read again. Both, Miss Wainscott and Miss Daly will knock your socks off and make you laugh at the same time!

What a fun book!
I really enjoyed both the stories in this book. I've read and liked Barbara Daly's other books. This Duets not only has a laugh-out-loud story from Ms. Daly, but also a funny-bone tickler from Tina Wainscott. I had a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday reading this Duets.

A classic just waiting to be rediscovered
This is the book that started the schoolchild genre subsequently defined by '1066 and All That' and Molesworth's various manuals such as 'Down with Skool' and 'Whizz for Atoms'. As with 'The Young Visiters', the grammar, the language and the authorial viewpoint of those classics contribute much to our enjoyment. But unlike its descendants, 'The Young Visiters' wasn't written by an adult ... probably.

To my knowledge, there isn't an audiobook version of the full text. But there are a couple of gushing extracts contained on the Naxos compilation '1000 Years of Laughter' which demonstrate that it isn't just the troubled spelling which make the book so amusing. The introduction to those extracts lead us to believe that JM Barrie, who wrote the introduction, could have had much to do with the entire work. Certainly once Barrie had died, she never wrote again, but my feeling is that the nine-year-old Ashford probably was the author. The story is less than 60 pages long, and can be enjoyed in a couple of sittings, then repeatedly re-read.

This work is likely to experience a dramatic surge in popularity this year. A TV adaptation starring Jim Broadbent (of 'Moulin Rouge' fame) will be broadcast, and this recently overlooked masterpiece will return to prominence once again.

The adult world through the eyes of a child

This book was written by an eight year old girl some time around the turn of the century. It is a story of courtship. The author had read many of the clasic novels on the subject. Combined with the experiences of a child, the result is a book filled with unintentional humour.

The result is that her characters are at once children and adults. When taken for a ride in a cariage, her heroin kneels on her trunk and looks out the window, bouncing up and down in her excitement. When Mr. Salteena, whose ambition it is to be a "real gentleman," is presented at court the Prince of Whales offers him ice cream. When he goes to visit London, Mr. Salteena sees nothing improper about sending the heroin to stay with the hero, unchaperoned. They fall in love and marry, much to the disapointment of Mr. Salteena who loves her too. He consoles himself by eating some of the wonderful deserts at their wedding supper.

This is one of the funniest books ever written.

The references to the 80s made me laugh
After 15 years I am currently on a search to recover the Sweet Dreams series for my 3 girls to experience. I just read 101 Ways To Meet Mr. Right by Janet Quin-Harkin and found it as delightful as I remembered it.

A sophomore named Darcy decides to write a term paper on how to meet guys and enlists her 2 best friends to help her. After a few mishaps and a make-over Darcy discovers that she has a crush on her brothers best friend of all people!! Not sure he feels the same way she tries to push the thought of him out of her head but finds it hard because he's always around.

I thought this story was really good and funny to read at times. The book dated itself with references of Matt Dillon and Lionel Richie as well as feather haircuts and 80s style clothing. *hehehe* A very good read.

Great Book
Clearly written and concise. Dr. Prince is a great pioneer in the development of MRA. Book begins with a general discussion of contrast enhanced 3D MRA and then has specific chapters on different anatomic areas. Book covers the key issues in detail such as timing of contrast administration and ways to improve images such as elliptical centric filling of k-space etc.

Abraham Lincoln: Letters from a Slave Girl (Dear Mr. President)

The story of a slave girl as seen through her letters.
Twelve-year-old Lettie is a slave girl living on the Tucker Plantation near Charleston, South Carolina, in 1861. It is only because of the friendship of her owner's young daughter, Katherine, that Lettie and her family have not been separated Even though Katherine taught her to read and has ensured that her father is not cruel, Lettie still longs to be free. With more questions than answers caused by the outbreak of war, she takes a daring step and writes to President Abraham Lincoln with the question she must know the answer to - when will she finally be free? This was a moving story about the cruelty of slavery as seen through the story of a spirited young girl longing to be free. Even though the letters were fictional, they seemed so real.
