A Wonderful Story
As I read "Little Tom" to my three-year-old I was struck by how important the message in this book is to today's society. We all need second chances--chances to forgive and be forgiven. Mr. Smith and Ms. Day-Bivens have done it again. Through vivid word pictures and the brilliant illustrations by Donna Brooks they have created wonderful images that catch the eyes and the heart. What a wonderful story to share with our children. What better way to teach them, and remind ourselves, that even when we make mistakes we can try again the next time. I so appreciate the values that Mr. Smith and Ms. Day-Bivens put into their books. They are quite simply the best children's book authors on the market. Can't wait for the next one!

Another sweet winner from Dale Smith and Pat Day-Bivens
"~What a special treasure! When I first laid eyes on this book, I was amazed. They've done it again - they've succeeded in producing another beautiful, can't-put-it-down children's book. I didn't think they could outdo the last ones: Over is Not Up, Nightime at the Zoo, and The Rabbit and the Promise Sign, but boy have they ever. sweetness of the illustrations as I began to read. The suspense I as an adult felt as I read each page kind of surprised me, as it was a "children's book". I was a little disapointed as I came to the end of the book and very quickly rounded up my children for a story time. They enjoyed it as much as I, if not more so. It was so special to see the fascination and excitement in their eyes as I would turn each page. I know I will have one on our coffee table very soon and there it will stay"~ for many years to come, along with the other Smith - Day-Bivens books we already have.

What an amazement! 10 and then some.
Its true: this is the best novel of the last 40 years!!! i am so increadibly fond of the stoppard aesthetic which in novel form here reaches a sublimity which is quasi-orgasmic. in the great tradition of stein, becket and joyce, this novel soars with joy while grounding itself with intense realism.

A rare, truly inspired novel.
Tom Stoppard's only novel, and one of the best books I've ever read. Mr. Moon, weighed upon by the crushing pressures of modern society (pressures which, it seems, bother no-one else), toys with a home-made bomb as he dutifully records the revised history of sponsor Lord Malquist. Stoppard brings comic genius and keen philosophical insight to bear on the "human condition". Cowboys, Jesus on a donkey, lions, French maids, Oh My.

WONDERFUL book!
EXCELLENT illustrations! NEAT little size and perfect reproductions...what more can you say!

The Big Little Book of Anthropomorphic Folk
Fans of Americana and pop culture are in for a treat when they get this book. In this admittedly small (but almost an inch thick) book there are five hundred+ ad characters (actually more like seven hundred if multiples are included). Divided into eight chapters, Food, Drinks, Kids' stuff, Dining, Technology, Autos, Home and finally Personal and Leisure, they are all in color, captioned and dated. All the well-known characters are included but also many who had a regional existence, like Mr Clean-Up, the 1946 St. Louis Chamber of Commerce antilitter campaigner, or Waddle's Duckling, a 1959 icon from the Portland, Oregon restaurant.

Warren Dotz writes a short intro and explains how companies realised that these characters would bring huge concerns down to human scale, especially if they became half human and half product and always with that smiling face. A useful companion book is 'What a Character', also by the author and it shows many 'Mr Product' icons as three-dimensional figurines, thus reinforcing customer brand loyalty further.

Visually the book is a delight to look at, thanks to the design by the author and Masud Husain. Handling this kind of material is a challenge because of all the different shapes and colors but here many of the characters are whole page or four to a page and a nice touch is to show them in the context of an ad, brochure cover or a packet front. I don't think the book could look any better. You can have a look at a few pages on the book's website, just put in the title and dot com.

BTW, I think the paper could have been just a bit thinner for ease of handling and an index would have been useful. Oh, and I was disappointed that Mad magazine wraparound cover painting (by Norman Mingo) of issue thirty-six (October 1957) was not reproduced somewhere, it was most likely the only time that dozens of copyright ad characters where used on a magazine cover.

Anyone who's ever fumbled and stumbled while everyone else is gracefully gliding knows exactly how Mr. Bumble feels. This poor bumblebee can't land on a flower without tumbling head over wings. All the other bees busily gather buckets of pollen for the Queen Bee, but Mr. Bumble comes back empty-handed every time. Fed up, the Queen fusses at him: "Dents are all you seem to gather!" One day, the Queen announces the discovery of a brand-new clover patch, dripping with golden pollen dust. She sends her minions on their way, but Mr. Bumble, as usual, lags behind. What if someone mean lives there, he wonders nervously. And someone does live in the new clover patch, but not anyone Mr. Bumble could have imagined. Charming Mr. Bumble, though different from his peers, shows that even those who have a little more difficulty in life can overcome obstacles (especially if there's a fairy or two on hand) and "learn to fly." The Kennedy siblings, unlike their winged creation, never bumble. Doug Kennedy's pictures of Her Majesty's hive and lush flower-jungles glow with a golden light. The duo's lesson is clear: work hard and be patient; victory will be sweet as honey. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Mr. Eaves and his magic camera
This book is excellent, not only for beautiful pictures, but the time Mr. Eaves took in finding the RIGHT projects to photograph. It makes an excellent gift as well as a book you want to pick up quite often to just look over again. The photography is just excellent. An unexplainable situation from his camera, but a gift to those who love photography. A wonderful, wonderful gift for any occassion.

You won't find another like this one!
This is a wonderful little book of artsy photography. Besides the unique colors and patterns the camera produces, Mr. Eaves also demonstrates his ability to compose the shots beautifully. Even photos of very ordinary objects become beautiful, artistic images. None of the images are manipulated in any way, and their uniqueness cannot be duplicated. This book is a must-have for any photographer or art lover's collection!

Too Cute!
I have had this book since I was a child and I recently found it and read it to my 2 1/2 year old son. He loved it! It has now become his favorite book. I think I can recite the whole thing by heart. I would definately recommend this book to anyone with children or adults too. I am now going to find more Mr. Men books for our collection. They are timeless and someday my son will have them for his kids.

Fabulous
What a fabulous book! I just read it with my eight year old and he loved it and so did I. We just got introduced to the Mr. and Miss books by my son's teacher. We read this together and both laughed. Mr. Forgetful forgets everything. He is walking along when a police officer asks Mr. Forgetful to deliver a message to the farmer saying his cow is in the lane. Poor Mr. Forgetful tries so hard to remember. He walks to the farmer's house repeating to himself, "A cow is in the lane. A cow is in the lane." By the time poor Mr. Forgetful talks to the farmer, all he can remember is, "A goose is in the rain." It's a fun, light hearted book. Read them all. The adults like them too.

A Tasteful Tale
Mr Greedy tells the sad tale of a man who can't stop eating. Try as he might, he wants to eat everything in sight. Will Mr Greedy be able to cut back on his eating? Or will his greediness be the end of Mr Greedy? Read it and see!

One of the top Mr. Men books!
Mr Greedy, along with Mr. Strong, is undoubtedly the top title in these books by Roger Hargreaves. As Sir Jonathan Hawkins MBE OBE Phd MP Esq. so eliquently put it "Roger Hargreaves is the ultimate children's writer and is a real aid to the little children that I so dearly love", and so the same can be said for all of us! In fact, as he is also a lecturer in child studies at Cambridge University, one of his students (who also happens to be his son, Jonathan Hawkins Jnr.) said that this set of books could be seen as a metaphor for the unpredictable upbringing of many children in our topsy-turvy society. The Mr. Men titles are a must read for all children, make sure that Mr. Greedy is part of your collection!! Mr. Greedy is about one particular character who cannot stop his eating habits, his friends try in various amusing ways to help their buddy out!

Give your child a perspective on his behavior!
Mr. Grumpy's behavior is not atypical of young children's behavior. This book helps the child to see his/her temperment in a realistic light, and helps you to coax better behavior out of your child.

Mr. Grumpy
Roger Hargreaves has done it again with Mr. Grumpy (part of the Mr. Men series). Mr. Grumpy is an ill-tempered fellow, but thanks to a cleverly devised plan by Mr. Happy and Mr. Tickle, we see a change in Mr. Grumpy's ways. A change for the better! This is a cute book that teaches a good lesson for young children. It shows that attitude is everything and that the nicer you are, the nicer others will be towards you.

Mr Gumpy's Motor Car
Published in Paperback by Garnder's UK (01 August, 2002)
Author: John Burningham
Amazon base price: $9.66
Mr. Gumpy, who charmed us in Mr. Gumpy's Outing, is ready for another day trip--this time in his lovely red car. Once again, a veritable menagerie clamors to be included, and that's fine with amiable Mr. Gumpy: "All right. But it will be a squash." The day progresses nicely--until a dark rain cloud moves in. When the inevitable happens--the car gets stuck--no one is willing to help push.

"Not me," said the goat. "I'm too old."
"Not me," said the calf. "I'm too young."
"Not me," said the cat. "It would ruin my fur."

And the excuses go on. Luckily, in Mr. Gumpy's life, there seems to be a happy ending to every day, and so there is to this day.

John Burningham has been creating one award-winning picture book after another for over three decades. This captivating book is no exception. Winner of several awards, including The New York Times Book Review Outstanding Children's Book of 1976, Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car will delight children of all ages for many decades to come. Uniquely appealing illustrations pair with soothing, yet exciting text to build a story young readers (and listeners) will return to time after time. (Ages 2 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car
My two-year-old absolutely loves this story. Ever since we've discovered it, he has me read it too him every night before bedtime. It is just as fun and amusing for adults to read as it is for children. My son loves to "read" along as he has memorized practically the whole book. The illustrations are great and only add to the excitement of the book. Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car is told in a simplistic manner that is even understandable to very young children.

A pleasant series parents will enjoy reading to children.
Not unlike Dr. Seuss, yet somehow significantly different, the author of the Mr. Gumpy series has successfully combined simple, entertaining drawings with a unique, almost experimental style of children's writing that focuses on the sounds of words and their relationships with other words. Sound repitition plays a key role in the rhythm and tempo of the Mr. Gumpy books in the tradition of The Cat In The Hat, but with a much less silly tone. Burnigham, instead of make-believe words and characters, uses higher-level colloquial language and animal characters that can talk. The short adventures of Mr. Gumpy and his friends will be entertaining to adults and brief enough to hold the attention of young children, who really enjoy the active black and white pictures. This book must be read aloud to fully experience the polished sounds of the carefully chosen words. Read it to your child, and the sentences will dance off your tongue and perform a ballet for those wh! o are listening.
