my favorite book
this is my favorite book. I, too, had bought this on a whim without any backround on story or author. this book blew me out of the water, though. Mr. Ridley writes in such a mystical, magical way that relates you to his characters while at the same time shedding new light on your own experiences. I am proud to say this is the most amazing book I've read.

A truly powerful tale of secrets and betrayal
I purchased this book on a whim based solely on the cover on the streets of Greenwich Village. I had no idea who the author was or even what the story was about. It was an imported book from the UK. I was shocked at what I read. It is a tale of a young trio and their friendship. We watch as their friendship disintegrates not unlike their parents' relationships before them. Secrets are revealed and love is betrayed in the past and dangerously jeopardized in the present. A man who is categorized as a monster is soon to be discovered to have a gentle and beautiful story within him waiting to be revealed by the next generation. The younger generation and their parents share a guilt and discomfort of their own sexuality. I have read the book many times and continue to be amazed by the beauty of it.

10 000 kisses from my soul to yours.
"When we are born we are magical & loving & full of wonder. But darkness & ignorance surround us at every corner.Until the day someone calls us a monster or a devil and we believe them."I have read this in 1990 & will read it till the day I die.Phillip Ridley is wonderful.

a primer on black and white relations
if you want to get a gist of why interracial relationships happen, read this. also, you will come to figure out why why blacks feel the way they do about whites. one of the best books ever written about blacks in europe...

Brilliant. Not to be missed.
This one is a cult classic, a story with messages that resonate long after we've put it down. One of my three or four all-time favorites. Brown has the gift of the storyteller's ear and voice, and an instinctive feel for the trope and rhythm of language. If it were put to music, it would be a combination of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. A cover-to-cover "bright moment"

Brilliant. Just as timely as it was nearly 30 years ago.
The re-release of Cecil Brown's 1969 classic is long overdue. The man's insights and vision are haunting in their lyricism, and his messages pack a punch. Cecil Brown is a natural, and I've missed his fiction all these years. Not to be missed

Excellent! Great teaching tool!
I read this book as a child, and here I am years later with a copy my sister recently purchased - and still remember the characters. An excellent way to teach children right from wrong - as well as helping them understand why people act the way they do. I recommend this book and all of the other "Little Miss" and "Mr." books. They are all wonderful!

Laughing at Mr. Right
Is there anything funny about the world of dating? No. Not after you've been dating for a while. THE PERFECT MAN by Heather Down is a fun and funny read. It could be more fun than your date. Certainly, at 0.49" x 6.04" x 4.50," it's easier to handle.

HE SAY'S, SHE SAY'S!
"He think's and she know's", that this humour book is a fun filled poke at that long suffering opposite sex... males that is:) A great time.

Great one-liners!
A very funny book! Some of the one-liners in this book cracked me up -- they all made me smile. A truly funny collection of relationship quips!

Meet Mr Grizzly: A Saga on the Passing of the Grizzly Bear

Meet Mr Grizzly
An outstanding and well written book. This book is an absolute must for those who love the great bear. Even though it relates to hunting of the grizzly, it offers terrific insight into the personality and intelligence of this great animal that once roamed so much of the American west.

Western Americana Classic
Meet Mr. Grizzly is a great classic of Western Americana. It is also the best book on training dogs and horses that I have ever read. Montague Stevens was an Englishman who took up ranching in New Mexico in the late 1800's. Among the problems he faced in learning the business of cattle and sheep ranching were Apaches, rustlers, and stock-killing grizzlies. While this book provides a colorful and highly literate description of ranch life on the western frontier, it focuses primarily on the methods he developed for hunting marauding bears. These, in turn, depended largely on his genius in training dogs and horses. For me, the most fascinating aspect of this book is the gentle creativity and the shrewd experimental approach he applied in working with his animals. His experiences are described with clarity, modesty, and humor.

Grizzly Bears, Hounds and an iconoclastic Englishman
Montague Stevens (the author) lightly mentions losing an arm in an accident and then never returns to the subject or the difficulties it must have caused as he chronicles his joyous escapades of hunting Grizzly bears near his ranch in New Mexico. This combined with his quote "Any good horse would be insulted by spurs" typifies his iconoclastic personality.

This book (non fiction) is about a man (Stevens) who lived in the late 1800's and early 1900's on a ranch in New Mexico near the Arizona border. The author spent a good portion of his life hunting Grizzly's by what he terms the "hit and miss method" before learning to catch grizzly's with "reasonable certainty". Written with the feel of a "fireside chat", "Meet Mr. Grizzly" discusses Stevens' many adventures of hunting bears, training hounds, ranch life and interesting people he met along the way. His opportunities to hunt with Teddy Roosevelt and several prominent Military men of his day are intriguing.

Stevens' unorthodox methods of training hounds to trail bears is both thought provoking and entertaining. Stevens understood dogs better than most dog trainers. He was able to train "liason dogs" to trail the hunting pack once the hunting pack were out of hearing. Stevens was an animal lover with a personality and demeanor similar to James Herriot. His analytical approach to problem solving allowed him to kindly train and own what was probably the worlds most successful pack of hunting dogs. His simple explanations of training methods make the reader feel as though anyone can expertly train dogs to do anything desired.

This book is of wonderful value even if only for its historical content regarding a species (Ursus Horribilis - Grizzly Bear)that is now extirpated both in New Mexico and Arizona. An absolutely wonderful read for any hunter, biologist, historian or nature enthusiast.

Ketchup Heaven
Mrs. Pig's Bulk Buy is a delightful children's story about little pigs that just love ketchup. It presents Mrs. Pig's solution to every mother's problem of what to do with kids that want to eat the same thing all the time. I love Mary Rayner's style of writing and the delightful illustrations. I discovered this book at the city library when my children were young and now am sharing it with grandchildren and great-neices.

Ketchup lovers delight causes new view of ketchup effects
This is one of the books I recommend to the children who come in to the library where I work. I have even recommended it to a mother in a restaurant who was having trouble convincing her young son not to use so much ketchup on everything he ate. While it may not change anyone's eating habits, it may lessen any mealtime conflict over using too much of the red stuff. Ketchup and cereal? Pu- Leeze.

It was very funny and enjoyable
This book is about ten little piglets called SORROL,BENJAMIN,SARAH,CINDY BRYONY,HILARY ,TOBY,ALUN,WILLIAM AND GARATH. Now these little piglets were addicted to tomato ketchup. How their mother cures them of their addiction is hilarious, and will put you off ketchup for life!

Must Read For Every Child
As a child in Guyana, Enid Blyton was a staple on my reading list. I remember, fondly, days curled up in a corner with Mr. Twiddle or Mr. Meddle, Mr. Pinkwhistle, The Secret Seven, Famous Five... the list can go on. I loved Enid Blyton. Reading Enid Blyton books stimulated my imagination and took me on countless journeys to far-away, magical places. I highly recommend Enid Blyton books as required reading for any child who enjoys the written word. This author is, in my humble opinion, the BEST CHILDREN'S WRITER OF ALL TIME.

A Childhood Favourite
A favourite of mine for many years, this, the first of Enid Blyton's Circus series deserves to go back into print! Adventure, danger, a cast of fun characters, friendship and the realisation of that dream we've all had at one time, of running away to join the circus!

A great Enid Blyton book for all!
It's sad this book is out-of-print. Of all books, Enid Blyton loved to write about her circus series. Jimmy Brown is an everyday boy, going to school, etc. UNTIL Dad becomes carpenter for big-shot Galliano's Circus. Mum worries that this isn't the right thing for Jimmy, but somehow the two convince her it is. Jimmy has already gotten to know the circus folk - Jeminma the silly monkey, Lilliput, a small thing of a man, and my favorite - the curly-haired, temperamental Lotta. And so what could go wrong? This series just tells you all the things that go on in a circus when it's not playing. A must-read to circus lovers or - Enid Blyton lovers!

Mr Gumpy's Outing
Published in Audio Cassette by Random House Children's Books (A Division of Random House Group) (25 July, 1991)
Author: John Burningham
Amazon base price: $
One fine morning Mr. Gumpy decides it's a perfect day for an outing in his little boat. Apparently, plenty of others think so, too. First some children ask to join him, then a rabbit, a cat, a dog, a pig, a sheep... Soon, Mr. Gumpy's boat is precariously full, and there's nowhere for anyone else to go--but overboard! This mild mariner takes everything in stride, though, and his guests are soon bellying up to a nice tea.

John Burningham earned the Kate Greenaway Medal, an ALA Notable Children's Book award, and the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Mr. Gumpy's Outing, and it's no wonder. This gifted and highly original author-illustrator creates a vision of glorious summer with deeply textured, sometimes only suggested, drawings. His tentatively questioning animals are ready to step right out of the pages and quietly join the delighted reader. And the simple, repetitive dialogue will lull the listener as long as it takes the characters to reach the boat's maximum capacity. Even then, there's no big splash--just an understated, Burningham-esque "and into the water they fell." Young readers will never tire of this gentle, comforting storybook. (Ages 2 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Average review score:

My son's favorite is "everything."
This is a thoroughly delightful book. The simple story engages small children, and the illustrations are first-rate. I have read this book countless times to my two pre-schoolers, and have enjoyed the experience very much. This book is an excellent way to get children interested in books. Finally, I recommend the hardback over the paperback because of the higher quality of the illustrations in the hardback.

A Fine Book About a Fine Day
One fine day, Mr. Gumpy goes punting. One by one, he takes on various passengers who PROMISE to behave, BUT... It is easy to forsee the outcome when a girl, a boy, a cat, a dog, a pig, a sheep, chickens, and assorted others all climb aboard. Told in lilting, repetitive passages that small children often adore, all ends as happily as one can expect on such a balmy afternoon, and with such an amiable host as is Mr. Gumpy. It comes as no surprise that MR GUMPY`S OUTING is a recipient of the Kate Greenaway medal, with the way John Burmingham`s illustrations pleasantly evoke the gentleness of the lazy summer`s day.

Toddlers love the sequencing and the pictures
As the mother of nine children I can assure you that Mr. Gumpy's Outing has prize winning appeal. It was often the first book our children asked for by name. Toddlers love the sequencing of the animals entering the boat. The illustrations are equally fascinating to them. I remember one of my little ones asking me in their tiny voice, "What does squabble mean, Mommy?" Even some early lessons on behavior can be gleaned from this timeless toddler favorite. It should be well worn and resting on every child's bookshelf.

My favorite Mr. Men/Little Miss book
This was my favorite Mr. Men/Little Miss book as a wee whipper snapper. Now I am sharing these stories with other people's children. Kids find them just as amusing today as I did then, and (eep!) now I can even see how us adults do, too! The books in the series range from great to average to pointless; and while I have not read them ALL (there are SO many), Mr. Messy is at the top of my list. He's messy, he's cute, he's charming, and he's paid an unexpected visit from Mr. Tidy and Mr. Neat. And from the lesson standpoint, this book persuasively illustrates how much "nicer" things are when they're clean rather than blatantly telling children to clean up after themselves. The end was the best part, but I won't spoil it by telling! Modest in length, colorful pictures on each page, and easy enough for kids of all ages to understand, these quirky books are great for early readers one step up from Dr. Seuss.

Read to Your Child to Improve Bonding and Intellect!
Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Mr. Messy was one of her picks.

Mr. Messy really is aptly named. He lived in a messy looking house with peeling paint, broken windows, a garden gate falling off its hinges, uncut grass, random items all over the house along with an unmade bed, and a broom that he tripped on in the garden. In fact, he was so messy, he bothered my daughter. As a result, she did something that she usually did not do . . . she got her crayons out and began making things look better.

Then Mr. Messy went for a walk and found the neatest cottage he had ever seen. Outside were Mr. Clean and Mr. Neat who were tidying things up. They asked Mr. Messy if they could help him. Mr. Messy agreed, and they quickly cleaned up the outside. Then they cleaned up the inside. Then, they realized that Mr. Messy needed work, too, and they cleaned him up also. After that, Mr. Messy said that 'I'm going to have to change my name!' All three became best of friends.

For years, whenever our daughter's room would start to get messy, we would ask her if she wanted a visit from Mr. Neat and Mr. Clean. She would laugh and start picking things up.

This is a good book for helping your child learn good tidiness habits, because the consequences of the alternative become obvious in a particularly humorous way.

A great book
