Loads of Fun
An excellent read - I've used this book again and again, along with its companion piece, "More Best, Worst, and Most Unusual". (If you buy the more recently published "Best, Worst and Most Unusual," you'll find that it contains both volumes in one book.) You can read about Florence Foster Jenkins, the worst soprano in the world; see pictures of the world's worst monuments; or find out what item of Napoleon's which was put up for auction and deemed MOST Unusual. At times unbelievable and hysterical (according to the authors, their own book is the worst book ever written!) this book is a must have. I would recommend buying both this volume and its companion work - you'll use it again and again.

More exciting to read as mother language!!
Of course, JKR's first book was the most eye-widening book among the 5 books (up till now) and it's more exciting to read in mother language as it takes time for a chinese to read an english book. (I guess there's no need for me to explain the greatness of the Rowling books) So lets go back to the translation. It's nice (but not great) as this edition is translated by Taiwanese which use lots of slang language which other Chinese-speaking people do not understand. So, personally, I would suggest the Simplied Chinese editon for nicer translation.

Fantastic crime thriller
Very few people have lived through the trauma Molly Burke has and remained sane but somehow she has managed it. Her parents were emotionally distant (some might call them abusive). She did a tour of duty in the hell that was South Vietnam and came home to discover she couldn't have any children thanks to the effects of Agent Orange and to this day still suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Yet with all that she is one of the best trauma nurses in St. Louis because she cares about her charges.

Working two jobs just to stay above the poverty line Molly is doing her best to deal with the threatening letters she is receiving. Her troubled nephew Patrick comes to stay with her while she is trying to cope with her stalker who is now sending her human skulls and femurs. The killer informs Molly that she knows him so she is in the middle of a very dangerous homicide investigation, trying to identify the perpetrator before he strikes against. Molly also deals with her rambunctious nephew and a media onslaught that turns her home into a glass house.

Although the heroine thinks she is a head case, she is one of the sanest characters to walk the pages of a crime novel. After what life has thrown at Molly, she somehow not only manages to cope but also has become a stronger person. Eileen Dreyer is a superb writer who manages to keep surprising the reader with one unexpected revelation after another. Fans of Patricia Cornwell and Robin Cook will love HEAD GAMES.

"Indescribably Grand": Diaries and Letters from the 1904 World's Fair
Published in Hardcover by Missouri Historical Society Pr (June, 1996)
Authors: Martha R. Clevenger and Missouri Historical Society
Amazon base price: $34.95

Well-written analysis of a monumental event
I came across this book while writing a paper about the 1904 World's Fair in college and did not expect to become so engrossed in it. Clevenger makes the reader feel like they are sitting at the Fair right next to the four Fair visitors she examines. This book is more than an easy-reading novel, though. Clevenger sets the Fair into a larger social and political context and shows the reader how the 1904 World's Fair had concrete repercussions on the worldviews of its visitors. The novel-like format and use of diaries from the Fair are merely more effective ways to hold our attention.

Sense of Place
Thomas Lacy has done an excellent job of building a sense of place for the Priest Lake area in this book. He has done this by keeping alive the human histories of the common, unsung inhabitants of a wild and beautiful region; people whose lives and everyday living were shaped by the rugged environment. In these times of a mobile, busy society it is good to take a book like Kaniksu and look back to the days and places where human history and the natural environment moved down parallel trails.

The Kansas City Marvels: The FBI Briefcase
This is a very believable group of characters in a timely and innovative story. I suspect most of us know or have met a group of kids who could easily be this gang. A good example of kids who are left pretty much to their own devices, gather into a "family" of choice, have fun and do rather well... most of the time. Fast paced with good description of characters and settings. If I was in KC and drove out to the airport, I think I could probably find the places described to the readers. The writer is creative and apparently is knowledgeable about kids and food preparation. There are a few "rough" words, but have you listened to the majority of real kids lately? Interesting villain, hope to meet again in a future story about the KC Marvels and their adventures. Got the book for my grandkids. I opened it up and just had to read it before I sent it off. Both adults and about 11,12 yrs and over will enjoy this

Philosophy of Symbiosis
For those who are not aware, Mr. Kurokawa is one of the leading architects in Japan as he has been for many years, surviving through many generations, developing a prolific practice and distinctive design style, as well as observing myriad cultural transformations along the way. In his latest book he presents his personal vision. Kurokawa has always been guided by his profound philosophical mind. He reads Western writers with shocking depth and bridges East and West in a deeply gratifying way. I suspect that his mind is balanced and centered by means of practice, practice as a Buddhist, practice as a deep architect, and practice as a visionary. At the same time, his feet are firmly planted in the real world of post-war Japan. The Philosophy of Symbiosis: From the Ages of the Machine to the Age of Life, is as dense but thoughtful and well worth the effort. The book poses powerful questions about the significance of "minor cultures" and the process of intercultural development that is running apace in the world today. To use a metaphor, his writing gives us a musical key in which we can listen to the future of the human spirit. It is the key in which that tune will most likely be played.
