A viciously delightful read
J. R. Ripley's Bum Rap In Branson is an exciting mystery novel featuring Tony Kozol and Rock Bottom, who is drawn into a bizarre recurrence of Kewpie dolls and murders, their interconnection unknown. The latest entry in a genuinely thrilling series, Bum Rap In Branson complicates Tony's desire to just get by, have fun, and earn a few bucks playing the guitar by saddling him with a murder accusation - he has to clear his name fast to avoid singing in jail! A viciously delightful read for mystery/suspense enthusiasts!

Good info from several angles
This book is a coffee table-sized paperback. Printing and binding are good quality.

The design of the book is such that it can be used as an on-site tour guide to Civil War St. Louis. Current directions, locations, and street names are given along with War era descriptions of the sites. Significant places are described--what existed then as well as what is on the site now. Also the burial locations of important people from both sides are given with biographical information about them.

Now, if you're not planning a trip to St. Louis, it's still good reading. I enjoyed the narrative style and found much useful information. It also helped put in geographical perspective places I'd been reading about. Lots of good photos and maps. It's a well-done book. Indexed and footnoted.

An excellent photographic study of Springfield, MO
Although I have owned this book for some time, I still find myself coming back to its cornucopia of sometimes-rare photographs of Springfield. In a city that preserves little of its history, CROSSROADS gives the reader glimpses into the past glories of Springfield. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to learn more about Springfield, or just treasures the historical lifeblood of the town.

Not Only Beutiful Written, But WAY Creative Non-Fiction
Homer utilizes his poetry (Skies of Such Valuable Glass, What We Did After the Rain, Tattoos) to create a new way of writing creative non-fiction. The scope of the slim volume is stunning in that Homer distills the Ozark sociology, discusses Ozark's dialect, and describes the bonds between step-dad and son.

The beauty of the writing is what hooked me, and I liked Homer's take on the Ozarks, it helped me to understand this strange land in which I had lived for several years. The people have to be tough to live and work here. The terrible summers and ticks and fleas are hard on children and animals. Ice storms freeze people home for days, several tims a winter, yet, to look at it from the comfort of home or car, one thinks of Britain's greens and forests, it's beautiful lakes and rolling hills. It looks like a soft rich land, from the window, but it is a harsh land, with hardy people who deliberately practice suspicion of strangers, and who are, mostly from British stock, and who still speak in the Elizabethen Dialect. Ozarks people pushed further into the wilderness from the Appalachians, and it has only been fifty years that passable roads have been built through them, bringing tourists and retirees who have changed and are changing the Ozarks. Homer in Drownt Boy, reveals why people leave the Ozarks, and sometimes, why they come back. A super read, a book to be kept forever.

A Miracle for Forensic Students and Crime Writers alike
As a crime writer (First Kill, The Girl By The Lake), I'm always on the lookout for great forensic reference books. I've bought this book five years ago and it has served me well. It covers, in alphabetical order, everything from scene of crime procedures, genetic fingerprint, DNA, ballistics, to profiling, knife wounds, and on and on. If it's related to crime, it's in there. Plus, apart from definitions, there are great case examples and diagrams to help the explanations when appropriate. Whether you're a forensic student, or a budding crime writer, do yourself a favour and get this one. Worth every dollar.

Stirring profile of Mo Anthoine's spirit and accomplishments
I sat down at 8:00 last evening and finished this book in 2 1/2 hours, it was so fascinating and exciting! Mo Anthoine is a wonderful man who cares more about friendship and fellowship on a climb than he does about conquering the mountain. This ethos makes him most admirable. But, Mo Anthoine is more than admirable. His climbing exploits are riveting. Moreover, as a movie climbing double, camera man, and stunt man for movies like *The Mission*, and as the inventor and producer of much climbing equipment, we see Anthoine as a kind of mountaineering Michaelangelo, a true Renaissance man. The book's title, *Feeding the Rat*, refers to a phrase Anthoine uses to describe the mixture of pleasure and fear and pain that is fed in the climber, a feeding he can't get enough of.

The book's author, A. Alvarez, writes beautifully, giving his readers a loving portrait of Mo Anthoine, a visceral sense of being on a variety of climbs, and much sound and accesible philosophical material to think about.
