Great adventures-of-youth story.
This book claims to be about a modern-day Tom Sawyer, and I was delighted to find out that that was absolutely true! Just as Twain wrote Tom Sawyer to remind adults how to be kids again, this book reminds our children of today's video games, etc. that they can still have real adventures. It is a quick read and includes a lot of cool information about Mark Twain. The models of different types of writing are an added bonus. This is an excellent book for "children" of all ages!

A great book of adventure stories. It has a lot of writing
This book is about Mikey Thompson of Hannibal, Missouri. It has a lot of things about Mark Twain, who I really like. What I really liked too about this book is all the writings such as book report, editorial, letter writing, and essays, too. I use it in my classroom. my teacher really liked it, too

Jamgon Mipham was and is master of the universe. If you have faith, and a connection to the dharma, you may get some useful info from this.

Remarkably easy to use
This small book is easy to understand and easy to use. This system of divination is based in Tibetan Buddisum but anyone can easily apply the fundamentals. You begin by asking for guidance in what to use, and what to discard in the reference material. You begin by quieting your mind, chants are provided for focus. You select a question you wish to ask, you then roll a single dice twice. You may caste the dice for yourself, or another. You record the number rolled on each throw, and look up those combinations in the reference. A wide range of areas (family, goals, business, money, health, etc. - 10 in all) are covered for each combination, providing a "general climate" (positive/neutral/negative) for the current personal and earth energies occuring at that moment in time. While my copy came with a traditional dice, any traditional six sided dice can be used. Personal experince has found the method informative and useful.

Super Duper
I purchased this book for my public library and it has been very popular. This is a fantastic gardening resource for all green thumbs in Illinois because all the information is specific to growing in Illinois. Wonderful color pictures on every page. I can't wait to purchase Aldrich's other books! Highly recommended.

Outstanding photos and plant information
I picked up a copy of this book at Chicago Flower and Garden show recently, and found it written to reach not only the master gardener, but also the novice or inspired homeowner wishing to fill their gardens with perennials native to the area. The photos are clear and precise, making identification easy for the untrained eye.

The book provides accurate information for growing conditions in Illinois. I will recommend this book to my college interns and fellow members of several garden clubs as well as homeowners I design perennial gardens for.

Highly recommended.

Praying for Base Hits: An American Boyhood

Combine Little Rascals with Stand by Me, then spice it up with a little taste of the great American sport of baseball, and you'll have an inkling of the treat in store for you in Praying for Base Hits. Bruce Clayton recalls his childhood in the 1950s, recounting pranks and pitfalls. He re-creates an era in American history that has begun to take on the patina of an idyll--from trying to catch a glimpse of the local beauty, "Big Red," to being force-fed gospel by his pious mother while his father, "one of those farm boys who wasn't a big talker but had an opinion on everything," plotted trips to the Kansas City Symphony. You don't have to have experienced the 1950s to love Clayton's charming stories of the dreams, desires, and disappointments of growing up afflicted with the human "condition." --Susan Swartwout

I know it's mostly true. I Iived nearby.
Once I began the book I never put it down. Bruce lived five blocks away from me in the same era. I especially remember Shortcake and Roy Beatty. They were friends of mine too. Bruce's recollection of Frank's restaurant was poignant although I didn't remember the dirt, just the heavenly(?) taste of a tenderloin sandwich. As to Old man Pierce, I too was chased from the premises, albeit not for the same reasons. My home was across from Scarrit grade school. Bruce no doubt played baseball there too. I do remember Lykins Square where we played the kids from "south of Independence Avenue" on many occasion, probably losing more than we won. This was a great step back to my own childhood. NE grad 1954.

An excellent memoir about the beauty of baseball and life
This memoir of growing up in Kansas City in the 1950s is much more than nostalgia. It is an evocation of the importance of baseball in a young person's life, the ambitions of youth, and the impact of family, friends and neighbors. The characters are wonderful, and the whole book is beautifully written. It's a good read, humorous and poignant.

Cycle "escape"
Want to find a great guide for an enjoyable cycling adventure on the Katy Trail across Missouri? While this "escape" is only one of many covered in Gustafson & Jarrett's "Great Escapes from St. Louis", it is worth the price of the book alone. My husband and I have enjoyed several weekend bicycle trips along the trail made more enjoyable by their recommendations for historic sites, restaurants and our favorite experience; staying in a bed & breakfast. Pick up this book if you want to plan a bike trip from beginning to end! It is enjoyable reading while you locate valuable information that takes the guess work out of your travel planning. The authors convince you to travel our part of the country and experience the fun they obviously had while researching this book.

My Eyes Have Been Opened
I have lived in Kansas City area for 15 years and had no idea there was so much too see and do here. I had heard about these attractions, but the authors really captured their character and liveliness. Seeing our city through another's eyes made us realize how much we have to offer. We also went to St. Joseph and enjoyed seeing the museums described in the book. We definitely plan on using this book for more "Escapes," especially those to the east. These authors obviously put a lot of time and work into this publication.

Wonderful story for kids and adults!
I'm not a writer. But, clearly, Jane Cutler is. So, please excuse this quick, poorly written review.

I got this book because I am directing a documentary about the 1904 World's Fair and thought the book might be interesting. My 9-year-old son asked if I would read it to him one night - like we had done when he was much younger. He absolutely loved it. When I had completed the first few pages, he said "this is a pretty good book". Every night he HAD to have me read more...To the point of him wanting to go to bed early (that NEVER happens) so that I could read "Molimo" to him. When his favorite movie, Harry Potter, came out on DVD, I was amazed to see him stop watching mid-movie because it was time to read "Molimo"! A few weeks later when I finished reading the last line and said "the end", the first words out of his mouth were "can we read it again?". We are currently on our third read through.

If THAT's not a glowing recommendatin, I don't know what is!

An Historical Novel that Encourages Critical Thinking
I read this book to my two sons. Parts of it were too sophisticated for my six year old, but my ten year old really enjoyed it. He also read it at school. I appreciate the way Ms Cutler dealt with racism within the time frame of the story. She clearly conveyed the unquestioning attitudes of that time, and yet let Harry gradually realize what he was seeing didn't fit the 'facts' as they were presented by others. This was a good history lesson for my children. They not only learned alot about the St. Louis World's Fair, but also about common attitudes during that time, and the value of thinking for oneself.

Knuckle Sandwich
The best book of Asian American poetry to come out
in, well, just about forever. If it works for you,
try some of these other small press giants:
Linh Dinh, Pamela Lu or Paul Chan.

Connoisseur of fine poetry
A wonderful book, I would give it six stars but I can't! I look forward to the next collection of this accomplished young poet.

'Ears to this terrific book!
Everyone I have shown this book to has loved it! The story is written in a Dr. Seuss style and rhymes. The words flow and hold your attention. The illustrations are bold and bright and really help you to fall in love with the characters. One elementry school classroom I know of, did a whole project around it. Should be on every kid's and adult's bookshelf!

Wonderful book and illustrations
The story is sweet and the rhymes very fun to read. The illustrator, Mo Martindale, was a dear friend of our family. His illustrations are wonderful and add to the story. Sadly, Mo passed away September 8 at the age of 83, but he has left wonderful art work for friends and family to enjoy and remember him by. The illustrations for this book are one of his final legacies. It's a great read!

Whilst not an ideal introductory text, this monograph is a thorough treatment of a potentially confusing subject. I am a little disappointed with the number and quality of the pictures.
