An enjoyable look at farming and respect for the landA JOURNAL OF THE SEASONS ON AN OZARK FARM, Leonard Hall, University of Missouri Press, Columbia, MO, 1980, 208 pgs., pb $9.95 Before I came to the Ozarks I knew next to nothing about life in rural America. What I knew of farming would fit on a diet plate of vegetables, which came, of course, from the store, not the farm. What I knew of country folk was what I learned from Andy Taylor and Hee Haw. After five years of living in the hills of Shannon County, I've learned quite a bit. Knowledge came from talking to my neighbors, attending auctions, and from walking the dirt road behind my house in the evenings with my wife Julie and Rio the dog. Lately, a great deal was taught to me by well known Ozark writer Leonard Hall in his book A Journal of the Seasons on an Ozark Farm. Hall wrote the Current River saga Stars Upstream and was a regular columnist for the St Louis Post Dispatch. His narrative of a single year intrigues the reader with a simple yet subtle narrative of a life on his farm, "Possum Tro

Accurate depicton of several Keb' Mo' songsThe score does an accurate job of translating Keb' Mo's style through selections from his first two albums. Solo songs, such as "Lullabye Baby Blues" and "You Can Love Yourself" are best depicted. Songs such as "More Than One Way Home" lose something without the rest of the band. Overall, this is a great investment that will provide enjoyment for guitarists of any ability.

Dorothy and Toto would've had so much fun...This is a delightful book about ways to have fun in Kansas City! When my friends and family found out I was moving to Kansas they were so full of remorse for me---you know, the stereotypes of flat, flat, flat cornfields with remnants of Dorothy's house, one-room school houses and forgotten lands (no, make that undeveloped lands) where everyone wears gingham frocks and plays their fiddle after dinner (nothing wrong with that!)...well, this book is going home, to EVERYONE'S home that I know for Christmas this year! HAH! Look who's house will be the guest flop next! Thanks for your fun book!

Great Gardener's ReferenceA friend loaned me this book recently. The layout is extremely helpful for quick reference and useful information. I look forward to taking it with me when I go to the garden center. The book is organized alphabetically, readily showing the most important information including hardiness zones, sun requirements and a synopsis of the plant's habit. In addition, there is a photo reference with clear and distinct photos of the plants described. I own quite a few garden books, but this is the one I will be taking with me when I go to buy plants, and the one I will use when browsing catalogues.

Monkey see- -monkey doThis book describes the antics of a pet monkey named Mo who is invited for lunch on a fancy ocean liner. The monkey is admonished in the invitation to act like a gentlemen. He tries to, but unfortunately, the gentleman he decides to imitate is not a very well-behaved man, since he makes a habit of walking on railings and such. As a result of his poor choice of role model, Mo gets a tongue lashing, but then his hero falls overboard, Mo saves him, and is declared a real gentleman. Despite the tension of misbehavior, scolding, and a fall into the ocean, many kids love the humor of Mo's antics, and of course, there is a happy ending. The book contains about 300 words.

THE GOOD OLD DAYSIn researching family history, one finds many paths to travel. Not only can one learn names, dates, places, but also the spirit of the community. So many people suffered much through war and sickness, we wonder how did those lucky ones survive? Well, a good example can be found in Morgan County. Men struggled to keep their families safe and fed, and the women bore children under unbelievable conditions. And yet, they perservered to form rich, wonderful communities full of old world traditions. Strangers helped each other and always the generosity of self and labor became everyday ways of life. We could learn much from our ancestors, and as we go along researching our family trees, we can only be hopeful that their spirit of adventure and faith will help us continue to make America the great country that it is.

Fascinating and educational at the same time. This terrific book features drawings and thumbnail descriptions of a wide variety of jungle denizens from insects to large mammals. Then on succeeding pages are drawings of the jungle habitat with the same animals hidden in various degrees. Searching out these naturally camoflaged critters kept my grand-daughter entertained for hours and we both learned a lot about the lives of these exotic species.

Very interesting and informative!I found this book to be quite interesting and easy to read. It gives a detailed eye-witness account to the destruction caused by the series of earthquakes in the early 1800's. If you are looking for a technical book about the Rift Zone, this book is not for you because it does not go into much detail about the fault itself. However, it does tell of the relation of the current geology and how it was effected by the earthquakes. Generally, I found this book very enjoyable and I suggest it for anyone who is interested in the learning more about the potential hazards that lie below the Mississippi Valley.
