Entertaining and well-written!
I originally read a review for this in the Gay & Lesbian section of London's Time Out magazine and just had to pick it up!

The only thing that frustrated me was that it seems to be more aimed toward the experienced Lesbian/Bisexual woman than toward newcomers to the scene. However, it is a witty commentary on and guide to same-sex girl relationships and I thought that overall it was a great read. Reading the book really makes me want to see Mo live! This is less a resource guide than a tongue-in-cheek commentary on all aspects of Lesbian singlehood, relationships and dating. A good read for anyone with a sense of humor..gay or straight.

the best cookbook I own
I cannot stress how wonderful this cookbook is. Every receipe is better than the last. The best thing about this cookbook is that the receipes are so simple and they use normal ingredients that you can find anywhere... no matter where you live! I have given over 10 of these as gifts and never a complatint yet... You have to get this. Once your hooked on "Jan's Brownies" , you'll never make boxed brownies again.

The Best Cookbook I Own.
I received this cookbook from my mother several years ago. Since then I have given over 10 as gifts myself. The reason I love this cookbook so much is that it calls for normal, everyday ingredients that are not hard to find. I have made 90% of the receipes in the cookbook and have loved them all. The absolute best brownies I have ever tasted are "Jan's Brownies"... you must make them for your family. I cannot tell you how much you need this cookbook in your own collection.

Simply Scrumptious!
My Dad got this book for me for my birthday several years ago and I have enjoyed it immensely. Then a girlfriend of mine was about to have a birthday. She doesn't like to cook much and leans more towards the artsy side of life. I felt led to give her my copy. I thought if anything, this book would help her to see that cooking IS artistic! She absolutly loves the book -- the only problem is now I cannot get a replacement for myself because the book is on backorder. ::Sigh:: I'll keep at it though until I get another one. I am an experienced cook and this book is perfect for the novice but the food is satisfying even to the most discriminating of palates. - Laura in Arizona

The one cook book you must have!
We would go hungry without this book! This is the cook book we use far and away more than any other. We have even started some family holiday traditions from the recipes i.e. the green beans with pears - amazing! You never have to worry about making a recipe because they are all fantastic. It is a regular gift from us and we have been told many times it's the receivers new favorite cook book as well. Buy it, it is any cook's must have!

Delicious recipes, beautifully presented
This is probably my all-time favorite cookbook (and I have many, many cookbooks). The recipes range from simple to prepare meals for a busy weeknight to elegant meals for entertaining guests or clients. My family's favorites are the Chicken Romano (very easy, very elegant) and the Mizzou Barbecue Sauce. I whipped up an extra-large batch of the BBQ sauce last year and gave it with my grandma's brisket recipe to our friends and neighbors. They raved about how good it was (and well it should be given that Kansas City is famous for having some of the world's finest barbecue). The cookbook also has inventive and tasty vegetable, dessert and pasta recipes, as well as a brunch section which I use every year for a Christmas brunch. I highly recommend this book. If you love to cook, you will not be disappointed.

Best cookbook- easy, original, colorful and tasty recipes
I stole this cookbook from my mom's kitchen after trying a couple of the recipes she prepared. The all-out favorite recipe is the Gazpacho Blanca. Make double or triple batches as friends will come back for more and will want to take some home. Other great recipes: Parmesan chicken, Spinach provolone soup, Curried chicken spread, and strawberry spinach salad.

Keepers of the Sound
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (01 November, 1998)
Author: Mo Griffin
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $24.95
Average review score:

An intriguing and explosive first novel.
Perhaps it's the freezing arctic setting in which 'Keepers of the Sound' takes place, or maybe it's the apocalyptic undertones that frost over the narrative, or quite possibly it's the polarized squadron of characters which makes Mo Griffin's first novel such a an intriguing read. Each of these elements is expertly explored, and it is their collective interpolation that cultivate and maintain the fascinatiing world of 'Keepers of the Sound'. 'Keepers' is an intricate, cerebral and ultimately explosive journey that traverses the minds of the world's most effective trained killers, military masterminds and political players. The intense and culminating first portion of the novel is cryptic and incredibly engaging, while the final chapters explode with heavily anticipated action and reaction. Comprehensively, the novel is a captivating ride from specualation and investigation into betrayal and catastrophe. Giving momentum to all of the novel's intensity and progression is a diverse ensemble of characters, led by the courageous Shane Oonok. From deceptively subtle beginning to nerve-jangling end, 'Keepers of the Sound' is a wonderful achievement from this promising first time novelist. I anxiously await Mo Griffin's next work.

Move over, Tom Clancy!
If you thought Tom Clancy had exhausted all of the angles to international conflict, think again. This book brings to life a threat not generally recognized in this country, and made all the more serious by the current political fragmentation of the Soviet Union. The specific situation is apparently well-researched, and easily plausible. The author does a great job of capturing the remote aspect of the setting and the isolation of the groups involved. Characters are well-developed, and the story comes together nicely. I particularly enjoyed the pyrotechnics of the climax.

Let's hope that marriage doesn't take the starch out of Major Shane Oonok!

Engaging from the start, and never lets you go.
This book grabs your attention in the first page, and gets increasingly intense until the end. The last 150 pages are truly gripping. Am looking forward to Mr. Griffin's next contribution. I'm sure that Shane Oonok has more adventures to in store for him.

And a Child Shall Lead Them.
SEPTEMBER 12TH was written and illustrated by children in a first-grade class. The book is filled with hope and displays that even though none of us will ever be the same since September 11th, we did and will press forward to continue living our lives, perhaps cherishing what we did not consider valuable before. The book is very poignant and some find it amazing that it was written by a class of first-graders. I don't find that so amazing as I do that these young children seem to be more at peace with the world and all that went on than most adults do. I find it hard to believe that the kids who wrote this book are afraid to fly in planes or travel overseas because of what happened on September 11th. I think this book illustrates that the future of our country will be in good hands. I highly recommend this book not only to children, but to anyone who still faces anxiety as a result of September 11th. Read this book, take comfort, and let yourself be led to peace by a child.

September 12th
This book is incredible. I am excited to see that children made this book as a comforting tool for other children. If you have a child that is terrified about the September 11th events, this book is a must. Every time that I feel anxious about the "war on terrorism" I read this book, and it provides me with comfort.

September 12th : We Knew We Would Be All Right
This is a wonderful children's book which explains how we as Americans (especially our children) knew we would be all right after the hideous experience of September 11, 2001.

The emphasis is on the day after and all the days after and I can almost hear our First Lady's voice soothing our children in the aftermath. This story (written and illustrated by children) has a soothing charm that brings tears to your eyes and hope to your heart.

Bearing Witness: A Rachel Gold Novel

Rachel Gold, a St. Louis attorney, doesn't think much of her client's chances for succeeding in an age-discrimination suit against one of the city's biggest engineering firms. Only her mother's plea that she represent Ruth Alpert convinces Rachel to take on what looks like a sure loser, until Ruth mentions her suspicions that her former employer has been involved in rigging bids for government contracts with five other regional construction-related companies. Tracking the bidding process is a tedious job, more suited for a powerful law firm with plenty of resources than for Rachel's more modest practice. But with the help of a law school professor who's an old friend and his eager minions of young students, Rachel soon uncovers a conspiracy that's more than an illegal bidding scam and much older than she is.

Before World War II, Nazis channeled looted gold to anti-Semitic sympathizers in the American Midwest, some of whom are still alive and are closely connected to a contemporary group of Aryan nation skinheads led by a charismatic preacher known as the Spider. Rachel's age-discrimination case quickly morphs into a much deadlier enterprise. The bodies pile up as her key witnesses are murdered and the defendant and his allies move to locate and destroy the 50-year-old evidence that could ruin them. With a fascinating historical background and a likable heroine, this taut little thriller, the sixth in the Rachel Gold series, sheds new light on an obscure era in the American heartland. --Jane Adams

Average review score:

Undoubtedly the best Rachel Gold
The Rachel Gold stories take place in St. Louis. I live in St. Louis and this is what initially drew me to these books. The first several books in this series were ok, but sometimes the story lines were rather light weight.

This current book, Bearing Witness, is different. It is a serious, heavy weight story, that is absolutely absorbing. The book starts out a little slow. It took a few chapters before I really got into it. But once it grabbed me, it would not let go.

The investigation of 50 years old incidents revolving around the Nazis and Hitler was riveting. Michael Kahn tells the story in a very suspenseful way. It is truly a page turner to be enjoyed by all who like exciting storytelling with a good dose of history thrown in.

I look forward to the next book in this series.

Raising the Gold Standard
It's not often in a book that the heroine and her allies are so good, and the guys on the other side so bad that you utter a verbal "Yes!" when they get their comeuppance, but in happens in this marvelous continuation of the too-often-overlooked Rachel Gold legal-detective series by Michael Kahn. Taking on the age-discrimination suit of her mother's friend leads to a captain of industry with swastikas in his past and, with her oddball friend Prof. Benny Goldberg and his legal-research irregulars on the case, Rachel parries all the legal roadblocks a multimillion-dollar legal staff can throw at her in unraveling a long-buried puzzle. This sets up an unforgettable and unforgettably dramatic courtroom confrontation. And woven throughout the fabric are a reverent look at the suffering of the Jews, even in the United States, before World War II. And, oh, yes, there's a sweet, growing romance, too. And it all works together. This is a book I've savored even more afterward than when I read it, and I keep coming back to that courtroom confrontation and going "Yes!"

Absolutely a Gold medal
I discovered Rachel Gold through a short story in EQMM - thank heaven, as I don't think I would have found them otherwise; for anyone who is looking for a terrific mystery, interesting characters and courtroom drama - run don't walk to buy one of Michael Kahn's Rachel Gold books.

This is, by far, the best of the lot; full of history (Nazi treasure), present day issues(age discrimination and excellent sleuthing. The plotting and the characters are so well drawn that I find I have re-read this book several times even though I know "who dun it" and enjoyed it all over again.

What wonderful people
This is just a really sweet book about twin sisters & their family. I wish things were still the way they were in this book. I would love to have known more about Fanny & Sue's lives. Hopefully this author will keep more coming.

Great Read
leaves you wanting to know even more about these two great girls. If you like World of Pies you'll love this one. Different, but just as good.

Full of the kind of details that satisfy!
I can understand what the Publishers Weekly reviewer was talking about---if he or she is used to "modern" novels full of very sad happenings and completely nothing sentimental and many deep character insights, this would not be the book to read. However, if they were like many of the real people out there, they would probably love this book. It's full of details that really made the place and time (St. Louis in the 20s and 30s) come alive for me---things like what Fanny and Sue wore, what they ate, how their room was decorated, what it was like in the isolation factory, how they prepared for their first date and how their parents reacted, all that. I kept waiting for the ultra sad moment to arrive that often mars such a read for me, and was relieved it never came---their lives had their ups and downs like most of our lives, but they moved on. This book is crying out for a sequel---it ends just as the next phase of their life is starting. I loved World of Pies also, and am looking forward to more by this stand-out author.

Great book for Ohio gardeners
Ohio is not the most hospitable place for gardening. With cold winters and hot often dry summers, gardening can be a balancing act. This book is a terrific guide for selecting and cultivating plants in this area. This book has helped me improve my black thumb to almost green. Recommended for all Ohio and surrounding areas.

An expert gardener right at your fingertips!
If your grandma were an expert gardener, this is like having all her advice right in one place. I have used this inexpensive, thorough gardening book much more than my expensive hardcover gardening books. This book is great for a novice gardener, and also for more experienced gardeners. He gives a full 2-pages for each plant, telling where to plant, when to trim, when to plant, varieties/cultivars, and much more. He answers pretty much any question you could have about a certain plant. I take this with me when I'm shopping for my plants, because he tells you lots more than the plant tag will. I highly, highly recommend this book for anyone who likes to garden! Too bad he doesn't cover vegetables or herbs, though.

Great!
Very readable and useful book. Tells you when to plant, where, and how, along with maintenance and other information about add'l species and cultivars. Tells you the type of sun needed and advantages of the plant, and zone where it belongs.

I could wish that the pictures were a little more close up, and listed with the flowers so you don't have to keep flipping to the middle section - but this is quibbling. Highly recommended.

The House On Riddle Hill
Glenn Tompkins wrote this book from his heart. He told stories of how hard it was to survive in the 1930's and 1940's on Crowley's Ridge in Southeast Missouri. The struggles of that time made the family unit strong there was work to be done and you did it. The family never gave up. After getting the book from Glenn's son and daughter in law I found I could not put it down. The first day I read 95 pages. The true stories make you laugh and then cry and I feel I know the Tompkins family personally. I would recommend this book to anyone and I plan to pass it on to my family members to read. Thanks to Glenn for a job well done.

Like sitting on the front porch with Grandpa
Mr. Tompkins' book is a great read! It was even more special to me, though, because my Grandpa Tot was one of the "O'Neals on the next farm over". Their house is in the background of the photo on page 269. Some of the stories, like the one about the "Wild Man of Crowley's Ridge" I can remember from my childhood. Others, though, are a fresh glimpse into history. I drive by the Old Tompkins Farm every day on my way to work. Now, I can not help but to try to visualize what it was like when Mr. Tompkins was growing up, there in the house on Riddle Hill.

The True "Unvarnished" Truth
This excellent book is every American's history. There is such an honesty without the trappings of sugar coated memories.

I am taken back to a time I will never experience. In my mind's eye I can visualize the commitment, struggle, joy and heartbreak of a family bound together in their effort to survive. Many aspects of this book reveal the hardships and pleasures of our elders' daily life that we cannot imagine on our own.

This book offers the gift of understanding that deepens our respect for where they have been and how they have come to be who they are.

I recommend it to all who want to understand the fabric and true grit of this country. What a wonderful resource for youngsters in school to read, it lends a greater appreciation for all we have and how we got to this point.

An amazing journey indeed!

This new book is sure to become a Caldecott Medal winner
I bet this new book will be a future Caldecott Medal winner. It is sure to delight both children and adults alike. Children will love the story of that little blue pigeon and it is sure to make parents remember with a smile the willful nature of the three year old. This book is a must for your children's library. Five time Emmy Award winning writer and animator Mo Willems is sure to gain further recognition for his latest venture.

An instant classic!
Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus is defintely the best children's book I have seen in a long time. Instantly ranking with me in the Where the Wild Things Are and Harold and the Purple Crayon category of excellence, DLTPDTB combines expressive illustration, thoughtful writing and a wonderful level of interaction with the reader.

Mo Willems has created a very feisty pigeon who will have children and parents telling it "no!" while also secretly rooting for it to succeed. Quick and fun, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus has been as big a hit with the adults in my life as it has with the children. An award-winner for sure.

don't judge the book by it's cover
The book is hilarious to kids young and old. Just about everyone has been in the pigeon's dilemna during childhood of wanting so badly to do something but aren't allowed yet!
To those who critize it for being a simplistic book, I say you've missed the whole point of the story.
