MINNESOTA CAREERS 2003 CALLED VITAL TOOL FOR MINNESOTA JOBSEEKERS

ST. PAUL, MN - Minnesota Department of Economic Security Commissioner (MDES) Earl Wilson today announced that the new edition of the Minnesota Careers publication is now available. The award-winning book guides users through the career and educational exploration process by helping them identify their career interests. It also provides important data on over 200 occupations, including wages, current employment figures, education and training requirements, and job outlook. "This should be the first stop for Minnesota students and jobseekers of any age," said Commissioner Wilson.

Minnesota Careers is already in the hands of over 100,000 Minnesota students, but is ideal for adult jobseekers as well. The publication provides listings of the many training options available, including a special section matching training goals with post-secondary programs throughout the state. In addition, the publication helps jobseekers connect to several state agencies and organizations that provide career and educational guidance. "The Minnesota Careers publication is a fine example of state agencies working together to provide the best information to our citizens," said Governor Jesse Ventura. "It is a vital tool for anyone on the job trail."

Recommended for the all gardening enthusiasts
Gardening on the Minnesota prairie had its origins with the advent of pioneer homesteads in the 1840s. Because of the climate (especially the severe and extended winters), prospects for horticulture were grim. But in the following 150 years, Minnesota saw the development of estate gardens whose beauty and opulence would rival those of Europe, and who public landscapes would be numbered among the best America had to offer. Hundreds of new plant varieties, a flourishing seed industry, and gardens of all kinds and sizes would extend to every corner of Minnesota. In Minnesota Gardens: An Illustrated History, reference librarian and dedicated gardener Susan Price has drawn upon original sources (including old newspaper accounts, diaries, historic photos, and interviews) to showcase Minnesota gardening past and present in the first comprehensive and superbly illustrated history of the subject that is enthusiastically recommended for the all gardening enthusiasts -- and would serve as an admirable template for similar works celebrating the history of regional gardening anywhere else in the nation.

Step-by-step garden guide with lots of great information
Book contains about 370 pages divided into 11 major sections. Sections are Annuals (29 pages), Bulbs (29 pages), Fruits (34 pages), Herbs and Vegetables (30 pages), Houseplants (30 pages), Lawns (26 pages), Perennials (30 pages), Roses (28 pages), Shrubs (32 pages), Trees (30 pages), and Vines & Groundcovers (30 pages).

What makes the book unique is that each section discusses the material for every month (hence the title, "month by month"). Each month contains about 2 pages of instructions for planning, planting, care, watering, fertilizer, pests, and pruning. Each section starts with several pages introducing the topic.

Example of Melinda Myers advice: Tree section (April), "Do not prune Oaks and Honeylocust once growth begins. Wait until the dormant season to avoid disease problems".

Oops, I wish I would have had this book earlier. I did prune my Oak in April a few years back, and I now have a disease problem.

Besides the great plant instructions, the books contains amazing maps of Wisconsin (page size maps with county names). Maps contain USDA Cold Hardiness, Annual Precipation, Average First Frost, and Average Last Frost. Also includes lists of crop dates, UW Extension Service addresses, dry tolerate perennials, and much much more.

This is an excellent wealth of plant tips for anyone gardening in Wisconsin. It's a must have book!

Got one, could not wait for mail.
I have been looking for a book like this. Me and my wife Bee have been trying to plant flowers, but often get stuff that will not grow in our area. Then Bee makes me sleep in the shed.

Great for Northern Gardeners - what will grow, what won't
I really liked this book for its brutal honestly about plant habits - which trees & shrubs will die back in Zone 4, which need protected sites, which sucker, which are not that attractive. It has an extensive list of cultivars for species - I just wish I knew where to find some of them! My only disappointment is the lesser number of pictures in this edition as opposed to the original.

Good, But not REAL regional
I heard great things about the book but was a little disappointed. She dedicated only a very small portion of the introduction to the specifics of WI soil conditions, etc. I suspect the rest of the material regarding plant varieties was written on a formula provided by the publisher. (they do these books for a lot of states) Although she does address some WI specific issues for each variety, I thought the coverage was over simplified and I would have loved pictures included with the text. (All of the pictures are less than an inch high and inserted in the center of the book.) It's a nice attempt at a broad set of topics. Maybe it would have been even better with less of a "follow the formula" form.

Good resource
This is one of the books that I refer to often when deciding what to plant in our yard.

Descriptions of the plant, whether it's a native species, and recommendations for certain varieties to look for, are very useful.

Is it a single resource that answers all of your questions? No. But no one book could be, and that's why you choose a few valuable books to provide a range of information.

If you live in Wisconsin, this book should be in your reference collection.

Excellent Garden Book for Wisconsin
The book contains 445 pages, about 30 pages are on general gardening and 30 pages are specific to Wisconsin. Specific information includes a full page color USDA Hardiness Map of Wisconsin with detail showing county borders, Wisconsin frost maps, monthly temperature & precipation data for 27 Wisconsin cities, lists of Wisconsin gardens and societies, and more.

The remaining 385 pages are about selected species. And these pages contain some of the best information that I have ever read in a garden book. If you buy it just for these pages, you will have an excellent reference book no matter where you live.

The species info covers 26 annuals, 15 bulbs, 17 ground covers, 10 ornamental grasses, 28 perennials, 6 roses, 25 shrubs, 30 trees, 3 turf grasses, and 9 vines, with 160 small photos. The info is perfectly arranged with two pages of text per each species. Each contain a paragraph on when to plant, where to plant, how to plant, care, additional info, and other varieties. My kind of book - all the info in one place and easy to find.

If you garden in Wisconsin, this is a must have book!

Unlike all my other garden books, I actual know of every species talked about in this book. The book talks about the plants we grow in Wisconsin. And best, Myers tells us about some popular plants that don't do well here (I wish the plant nursery would have told me this before they sold me many wrong varieties). I learned this by trial and error.

My only criticism about the book is that I wish she had written another volume. Great information!

A useful tool for critical care nurses
This book is very useful as a practical reference in clinical setting and for developing internal procedures. It is well organised and peer reviewed.
Each procedure is clearly described step by step and furthermore the rational for each action specified. The expected outcomes are mentionned, further references are available at the end of each chapter.
I believe that this manual can be useful to nursing students, experienced nurses, advance practice nurses and even physicians working in a ICU.

Gold standard
This is the gold standard for proper technique and procedure for critical care nursing skills. Critical care units around the country use this book as their standard. Helpful to all levels of clinical critical care nursing practitioners. Every ICU should have a copy in their library of reference books. Very helpful if you are changing jobs, a traveler, or perdiem and need a reference for procedures you don't often perform, or that are new to you - it can help you ensure that your practice is safe. There is a push by licensing bodies to have a consistent national standard for nursing procedures - rather than procedures that vary hospital to hospital, or even unit to unit within a hospital!

this is a great review for my nursing classes and career choic

Nursing Student Review
This is the best book we've had in my RN, BSN program so far. The content is very easy to read. The sentences are kept short and to the point. The content is repeated over and over in different places in the chapters as well as throughout the book, making it easier to remember the main points. The summaries at the end of each chapter really focus on the main points and great for last minute updating. I wish all of our books in nursing school were this good.
