Humourous, but not cheesy -- a rare find
Superb. You know those little books you pick up in the doctor's waiting room to pass the time? The ones with one funny witticism one each page, united by a general theme?

This is better. The theme is more directed, yet at the same time the content is less redundant. And they're actually funny, yet at the same time there's a serious side inherent in the topic. Even if you don't know any MKs personally, you'll enjoy this one. A great addition to any personal library.

Wide-ranging, accurate view of the MK (missionary kid) world
The first item: "1. You can't answer the question, "Where are you from?"

Wow! I read that first line, and was captured by this little book. I grew up in Zaire (now Congo, again...) and also spent time in several other countries along the way. My mother is an MK too. This book is 100% right on. I have always felt like a foreigner, no matter if I was in boarding school, back at the mission with my folks, or "home on furlough" to the States.

The book is serious, but also hilariously funny. I have indeed watched nature programs and thought about what that animal/insect tasted like, and marveled at the selection of coffees in the grocery store, laughed at the names of compact cars (because I knew what they really meant), spoken at churches even though I am not a pastor, been exhibited at Sunday School, and my home does look like a museum of African art. It took me years to remember not to cross my 7's, and to throw away empty jars and tins.

If you are an MK, please read this book. It will comfort you to know that your feelings of alienation and lonliness are shared with thousands of others - you really are not alone. It will also remind you of the fun times, whether you were a missionary kid in Africa, Asia, Central, or South America.

If you are trying to get to know an MK (a feat if you can accomplish it, since we don't usually let people too close), you should also read this book. It will give you some insight into their world, which is so different from the one you grew up in.

You know you've read a good book when...
Possibly the greatest set of words to ever be written down in this order. With the exception of the recipe for chocolate chip cookies, but that goes without saying.

Mbokodo : inside MK : Mwezi Twala : a soldier's story

The ugly side of the 'Liberators'
In this age of political correctness where the victors rewrite history,Mbokodo is a refreshing look at the other side of the ANC.Not the ANC of The Freedom Charter or of Luthuli or of the world icon Nelson Mandela but of the hideous concentration camps of Quatro ,of the torures that went on there of which surely Hitler and Stalin would have been proud and of the brutal Mbokodo-the ANC secret police whose deeds rivalled the worst of those at Vlakplaas. It is not a novel for the fainthearted for among the torture methods described are jumpin on the heads of suspects 'to see if they would burst'. thowing stones at the eyes of suspects standing against walls, dripping melted plastic on genitalia and open wounds, whipping to death with barbed wire, sjamboks and electric cable and burning the souls of the feet with red hot pieces of iron. Of course this book is not popular with the current powers that be but than neither was that wonderful book by the great Steve Biko-'I Write What I Like'

I have no doubt that though he is not a popular figure now,Mwezi Twala will oned day take his place among the great South Africans who stood for conscience such as Steve Biko,Alan Paton and Emily Hobhouse.Especially since we have not been given a clear picture of what happened at Quatro and other ANC camps by the media or the TRC as we have of abuses by the Apartheid government

Author hits the mark.
Charles (Skip) Stratton is well known amongst gun collectors for his articles on collecting Lee Enfields. I was interested to discover that he had published books on collecting Lee Enfields. His books is aimed (no pun) specifically at the collector whom needs to know how to pull the bolt apart and to put it back together again, without wandering into the sphere and expertice of an armourer. Stratton makes no attempt to explain how to undertake tasks best left to a gunsmith or amourer. By reading this book a collector will be able to say recognise the difference between an early and late production nose cap.

A positive feature of his works is that the text is supported by very clear uncluttered line drawings that reveal more detail than what a photograph would do. Even swivel screws have their own illustrations showing the difference between the first and second variations.

The book is written in a logical direct manner, and initially starts with how to identify the place of production, the range of serial numbers for each year and what various stampings on wood and metal indicate. Australian and other Commonwealth collectors must be mindful that collectors in the United States may not instantly appreciate that VR means Victoria Regina and not Vancouver Rifles.

The authors success is in my opinion is due to his setting out to do one thing, make a great hand book for collectors that anticipates the questions a collector will ask.

Lee Enfield Rifle I.D. Master Piece
This is the the book to get if you want to know what the Lee Enfield Number One is all about. Read this book before and after you buy your Lee Enfield Number One(MkI or Mk III). Charles Stratton details much needed information for you to get a detailed understanding of your Lee Enfield. Stratton also gives expert advice on details for collectors. This advice centers around tips that describe rare and collectable models of the Lee Enfield. He simply tells you what to look for in detail. This book will also simply give reading enjoyment to any WWI and II history buff.

Excellent reference source
For a good, cost-effective reference source, Stratton cannot be beat! Lots of details for the collector, and as we all know, Enfield addicts are helpless when it comes to details!

Don't Pig Out on Junk Food: The Mk's Guide to Survival in the U.S

A Necessary Guide for all missionaries and their children
As a missionary kid from Nigeria, now residing in Indiana for 24 years, I wish this book would have been written when I came to the USA. I feel that I would have benefitted greatly as there were not re-entry groups at that time such as Mu Kappa etc. It is a guide full of suggestions to help MK's and their parents. Parents receive guidance on what their Mk's will face and how they can help them adapt. There are lots of personal stories by those who have returned to the US and experiences they had and are willing to share with others. At the end of each chapter is a set of questions in a workbook type format to get the missionaries and their kids to think and understand the changes and feelings the MK's are or will experience. A must have book that should be a requirement by all mission board to the missionaries they send overseas.

Required reading for missionaries and their children
This is not a diet book and has nothing to do with junk food. In this wonderful book, Gordon shares insights from missionary kids to missionaries, the pastors who send them and other missionary kids on how to survive back in the United States after growing up on the foreign mission field. You will laugh with them and cry with them as they share their hearts. This book ought to be required reading for every missionary with children and for every missionary kid.

There is more to the Sabre than the F-86, enter the Marks
Published as a companion to ""North American F-86A-L Sabre in USAF & Foreign Service" (Aircam No.17 - ARCO/Aircam No.19), this book, that was published as Aircam No.20 - ARCO/Aircam No.24 is set up in the famous Aircam formula: lots of color sideviews (44), some in black-and-white (2); a comprehensive text (6 pages plus an additional 4 in the extra inlay) and an average of 4 black-and-white photographs on the remaining pages, considering that the color sideviews take 8 pages and the text leaves not enough space for four photographs. Being an ideal modeller's reference it is well worth searching for!

Hawker Hurricane Mk.I/IV, review of a modeller's standard
Though since long out of print (OOP), it remains one of the standard works for modellers who want to change their standard Hurricane kit in a different version. The paintings of Richard Ward were for long years the standard in aviation side-views, and there is quite a lot of them, fourty-eight to be exact, inside plus an additional four on the front cover. The books is also packed with black and white photographs of the plane and has a comprehensive text about the plane's history.
Note: This book was published both by Osprey as no. 24 of their Aircam series and by Arco as no. 33 of their Arco/Aircam series!

Barely sufficient for beginners.
The Haynes' assume you know too much. They leave out certain important details on occasion and don't always identify all the parts they talk about with a diagram. If I wasn't already somewhat familiar with some of the terminology, in many cases I wouldn't have (and sometimes didn't) know what in the heck they were talking about. Really what is needed is a narrower scope and more than one book on the Sprite/Midgets. If you are serious about working on your Spridget, get a more complete official manual (hint). I won't be rude and say what the book is in this review, but Amazon carries this better one too.

Invaluable aid to a Midget owner
I have this book and despite the occasional grease stain I have found it practically invaluable. I went through a complete engine/transmission/and rear end rebuild with out troubles. This book has conversion tables, linguistic translations and orignal specifications for the Midget. The amount of information in this book is well worth the price.

Advantages and disadvantages...
The manual the other reviewer is obviously referring to is a reprint of the factory service and driver's manuals. (If that's not enough of a clue to identify it, you're out of luck...) Thus, it has all the original information. Definitely good to have.

HOWEVER, since it is the factory manual, it refers to all the dealership tools, most of which are unavailable, or are prohibitively expensive. This is where the Haynes manual shines. Since they base their manual on an actual disassembly and reassembly of the car, they can (and do) offer ways to do the job without the factory tools. I have them both, and refer to each frequently.

I don't understnd the problem with terminology. Both manuals use the same (British) terminology, and the Haynes has a "translation table". In any case, either one beats the equivalent Clymer or Chilton's.

Software Sizing and Estimating: Mk II Fpa (Wiley Series in Software Engineering Practice)
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (June, 1991)
Author: Charles R. Symons
Amazon base price: $99.99
Average review score:

Basic ref. for software sizing 4GL type environments.
This work takes you through what you need to know to size a "classical" development. The detail and approach is that for applications development/ consulting. The feel is somewhat old style; it won't help much for warehousing type structures. The research really dates from mid 80s and does not reflect even client server developments. Quality of database usage or design is not there at all, and the word "database" does not appear in the index. Kicking productivity to modern levels is achieved by setting a high "function units per hour" level. It sort of assumes that project management is what the game is all about, and that technical flair is not worth a mention. It allows a relatively mechanical way of grinding out an estimate that's objective and defensible, but would make any nifty programmer laugh. However, there is a sensible overiew of strengths and weaknesses at the start of the book. It is a useful volume to help size projects if you are consulting to a non-technical audience. In addition it has industry standard numbers that are popluar in presentations. At £65, one might expect better printing quality: It's not attractively produced. It is at least packed with detail.

The Mk/Ultra Secret
Published in Hardcover by Christopher Scott Publishing, Limited (March, 1997)
Author: Frank Camper
Amazon base price: $24.95

Average review score:

Unconvincing new angle on JFK assasination
Camper has conflated two of the hottest topics in conspiracy theory: CIA mind control, and the assasination of JFK. Much of MK-ULTRA/Secret either contradicts some of the more established facts about the case, which would be fine (great actually) if the author could give us any documentation at all to support it, or at least give us more compelling reasons to dismiss the "official party line" Camper deliberately categorizes his research as sensitive, coming as they do from privileged sources. I find that rather convenient.

Who knows? Maybe everything in this book is the gospel truth. But I find none of these hypotheses more compelling, or plausible, than such obviously researched and documented accounts as Lane's and Garrison's. And the tendency here to dismiss long held questions (e.g. "Why does the body of the man shot by Jack Ruby not match the description of Oswald given on his Marine physical?) without substantial explanation makes it a truly unconvincing document.

An examination of the causes and players in JFK's death
The MK/ULTRA Secret opens with a fantastic re-creation of Kennedy's appointment with snipers' crossfire in Dallas. The author then takes us on a well researched trip of the background that leads us to that moment outside the Texas School Book Depository on November 22, 1963. From Lee Harvey Oswald's unknowing involvment with the CIA starting in 1959 and culminating with his role of scapegoat at the hands of rogue CIA agents in Texas four years later, the book takes us on a stranger than fiction ride with an inside look at the murky world of spies. How the Bay of Pigs Operation, begun under Eisenhower, was one of the key factors leading to JFK's death. How Kennedy's mishandling of another CIA operation in South Vietnam also helped seal his fate. But the look into CIA mind control techniques and Oswald's sojourn down that dark rode is one of the major investigations of the book. From his duties as a US Marine radar operator in Japan, to his "defection" to the Soviet Union, to his return to the US and involvment with the "Fair Play for Cuba Committee" we see how he was betrayed by the very government and country he'd sworn to protect. The MK/ULTRA Secret also does a very good job of documenting other aspects of the assasination and how they related to the CIA scenario. All in all, an excellent look at a watershed event in American history that may change your view of what really occured that day in Dallas, Texas.
