Emily of Deep Valley

Sweet Book...
Emily of Deep Valley was a sweet book. It was about Emily Webster and after she graduated from Deep Valley Highschool. Emily lived with her grandfather, a civil war veteran, in an old fashioned house across the slough. She goes to school with her own crowd and has some of the same teachers Betsy and Tacy had. Emily is one of those shy, sweet, and considerate charactures that every one loves. She gets you into the story with her longing to stay in highschool, and her longing to go to college. But she can do neither. She sees her friends come home for vacation from college. She finally decides to stop feeling sorry for herself and do something. She starts by putting her "hair up". This knocks off the whole story. As soon as the hair is up Cab Edwards, we know from the Betsy-Tacy series, begins to call on her and they go to dances together... I have one question though. When are they going to republish this wonderful book?

This goes for all the "Betsy" books
When Maud Hart Lovelace first wrote the "Betsy-Tacy" series, did she know how much so many people, from children to adults, would love them? The series has at least one book that anyone of any age can relate to. 10-year-olds will love "Over the big Hill," high-schoolers will love the books about when Betsy was attending Deep Valley High, etc. And it doesn't end there! Even if you're not the age that Betsy was in one of the books, you can still love all of them! Maud has a way of capturing real feelings and experiences--even bad ones--and turning them into works of art. The "Betsy-Tacy" series really is a work of art, even if it was painted with a pen, and not a paintbrush.

Very Touching Book
This book about an orphan in Minnesota living with her Grndfather is such an outstanding book that can be read over and over! This book is set in between 1910-1920, yet it still relates to modern living for teenagers. I won't ruin the story for you...read it on your own, and then tell it to your children!

Ukrainian Folk Tales

Inventive versions of old stories seem new here!
An excellent collection of folktales, this book was originally published in England in the early 1960's. Graphic woodblock prints from the original publication make the pages of great interest.

The tales themselves, although following standard folktale patterns, seem new and fascinating. There's a cumulative tale (like "The Old Woman and Her Pig") that uses a sparrow sitting on a stalk of grass and issuing a whole series of demands. Eventually the story unwinds, each person or thing does his assigned job, and the grass begins to sway and sing "Rockabye, bad little sparrow."

There is a rooster (Chanticleer) whose friend the cat saves him from the fox--time after time; a billy goat and a sheep who work together to outwit the wolves who want to eat them; a cat (Pan Kotsky) who has all the other animals convinced that he will tear them to pieces. When they finally scatter, leaving Pan Kotsky alone in a tree, he warily comes down--scared to death! In another tale, even though God provides first a mare, then a ram and finally a pig for the wolf to eat, he never gets to eat them or the tailor that God points out as his last chance.

A motif that recurs in one story is that of the old dog who has outgrown his usefulness-what shall he do now? In this case, a wolf arranges events so the dog can save his master's baby, and once again he is a favored pet. In return the dog sees that the wolf gets food.

Memories of Bolivia and Peru!
I bought this book to learn more about the Andean textiles I began collecting while working in Peru and Bolivia. The photos are beautiful and the info is pretty good-good for a beginner but probably not as helpful for a collector with more expertise. There are not many books on this subject and I'm interested to know if anyone has found a better one.

It is an adequate anthology, with good bindings for a softcover book. The text is small and somewhat cramped and the paper is thin and light, as is the standard for anthologies of this size. If you are looking for a specific work or works, it is probabably more rewarding and convenient to get an individual volume for the specified work. If, however, you need a decent survey of the period's literature (without too much depth concerning any one author) this is a fine, inexpensive volume.

Immaculate
Of course as a student one is bound to hesitate before spending fifty quid on a book, but this one is absolutely worth ist. Abrams and Greenblatt have not just gathered what is indispensable in English literature; the Norton Anthology features brilliant introductions and short biographies, which are concise and readable. All the works presented are scrupulously annotated. And finally the reader gets suggestions for further reading which really help.

There may be a bias towards poetry and high literature in the selection. Poetry, however, is the only genre in which an anthology of this size can give you almost everything you want to know. Individual edititons of classic novels or plays, however, are a lot easier to get hold of than books of poetry, so I feel the editors' choice is fully justified. You will find yourself turn back to the Norton Anthology even long after you have finished college; it is a book that opens up new worlds.

Norton Anthology of English Literature by Abrams et al.
This is an excellent reference guide for the English Literature
of the 1600s and 1700s. There is an exhaustive coverage of
the following works:
o Caedmon's Hymn
o Beowulf
o Geoffrey Chaucer
o Middle Age Lyrics
o Sir Thomas Mallory
o Medieval Attitudes Toward Life on Earth
o Christopher Marlowe
o Sir Thomas Moore
o Shakespeare
o Sir Walter Ralegh
o John Donne
o Robert Herrick
o George Herbert
o John Milton
o Richard Lovelace
o Samuel Butler
o Jonathan Swift
o Alexander Pope
o Samuel Johnson
o James Boswell
o Restoration Literature of the 18th Century

Here is a paragraph from "The Wife of Bath's Tale":
"The wise astrologen daun Ptolomce,
That saith this proverbe in his Almageste:
' Of alle men his wisdom is the hyeste
That rekketh nat who hath the world in honde.
By this proverbe thou shalt understonde."

This work is perfect for majors of English literature and
college courses in literature. A beauty of the work is that
it is written in the original English dialect of the
centuries represented. Critiques of this work alone could
fill a dozen or so academic dissertations.

Disappointing treatment of a very interesting subject
Published for the juvenile market, this title offers little more than cursory information in its meager number of pages. Anyone looking for detailed information about past MH-53 missions or comprehensive pictorial reference material will not find it here. The selection and quality of photographs is especially weak.
