a complete textbook on pediatric problems
This is the book every post-graduate ought to read during residency days in pediatric ward. It helps boost clinical acumen by making diagnosis at the bedside with a very logical approach. It is excellent while describing the diseases of kidney, heart and nervous system. After going through the chapters in detail it infuses a kind of confidence in making diagnosis; and coming to differential diagnosis for a number of presentations of various illnesses. Sometimes, i feel it is a must not only for dealing with complicated and day to day problems but for passing examinations too.

EXCELLENCE: TRY AND BE CONVINCED
With expertly edited sections that include: anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and behavioural sciences, "Rypin's Basic Sciences Review" has everything medical and paramedical students need in order to build solid foundation in their studies. The book is very complete. It is elaborately illustrated; and offers explicit information on each of its broad sections. Also, useful self-test questions, which help readers evaluate their comprehension is available on both the text and its accompanied CD-ROM.
The quality of the information this book presents is hard to rival. Thus, it surprises me that potential buyers have continued to underrate it.

A FINE REVISIONAL COMPENDIUM
Like the "Rypin's Basic Sciences Review", this "Rypin's Clinical Sciences Review" is one book that I would describe as being near perfect.
It boasts of an extended coverage which include: internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry, paediatrics, epidermiology, and obstetrics and gynaecology.
The information in this revisional text are very concise. No extensive details: just all that students would need for quick revisions. Still, each chapter received generous illustrations. In a nutshell, this is the textbook to purchase if you are a medical student who need a single-volume revisional compendium. The attached questions and answers CD-ROM, which comes with this book provides the necessary parameter for self-evaluation.

A Well-Written Eye-Opener of a Book
This is the most accessible of the books currently available on dangers to health of a high salt/sodium diet. Given that almost all of us eat this type of diet, this is also (to use a well-worn cliche) one of those books "everyone should read," and not just those who have high blood pressure. It is also one of those books I'm sure the food processing conglomerates and the salt industry would like to see out of print as soon as possible (note that it actually is out of print at this time, but I certainly hope a 2nd printing will be available soon).

A nut-shell description of the book is that:
(1) dietary salt/sodium in high amounts combined with dietary potassium in low amounts will, over time, gradually contribute to the onset of a number of diseases (heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, hypertension, and asthma)
(2) most people don't have a clue how much salt/sodium they're actually eating because roughly 80% of it is "hidden" in processed foods
(3) changing diet by decreasing salt/sodium (particularly processed foods) while increasing potassium (particularly fruits & vegetables) is an effective (and the safest) way to lower blood pressure and protect against the onset of these diseases

After reading this book, I immediately felt more optimistic about my health and my ability to control it. I also have a keener sense of what foods are surprisingly high in salt/sodium and are contributing to the western world's epidemic of obesity, high blood pressure, and disease. The authors' advice is compelling and difficult to refute. They build their case on the basis of studies published in reputable medical journals such as the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. In particular, they suggest that one of the best ways to prevent and even reverse these diseases is to reduce salt/sodium in our diets while increasing the amount of natural foods we eat. I particularly like the idea that it's not necessary to go "cold turkey" on salt. Instead, some salt/sodium can be eaten BUT it must be balanced with potassium-rich foods. There are also tips and advice about smoothly adapting to a lower salt/sodium diet. By following them, I have lowered my blood pressure significantly, and have more energy than I've had in years, and an increased feeling of well-being. I had a physical exam last week and my doctor was VERY impressed with my health. A final comment is that you may want to get more than one copy of this book because, like me, you may find yourself wanting to give it to family and close friends. I've had 3 copies and have given all mine away. If you're serious about improving and preserving your health in a drug-free way, this is the book for you.

Your "desert island" pediatric book.
One has not only limited amount of money to spend on books, but limited time to read them as well. If you fall asleep reading the better known ("classic") pediatric textbooks, but find the spiral-bound handbooks inadequate, this manual is the perfect choice for you. It contains no photos and has few illustrations. You can forget about small-lettered, endless lists and depressing tables. What this book has is concise, easy-to- find and easy-to-read, practical, relevant and REALLY useful information about almost every topic you could encounter in a clinical setting. The important facts are highlighted as "key" information: key clinical findings, key laboratory findings, etc. If you study for the boards, has a round in five minutes or just need some refreshing between patients, you will find this book amazingly helpful.

"Must" reading for all health care professionals & activists
Based on hundreds of true-life stories and viewpoints of patients, doctors, nursers, and health care professionals, Saving The Soul Of Medicine is an impressive and informative compendium of inspiring essays demonstrating the spiritual aspects of the physician/patient relationship -- and how to heal it when dysfunctions. Dr. Margaret Mahony is an activist for health care reform and maintains a private gynecology practice in San Jose, California. During her last years as a participating HMO physician, her growing concern for her patients' welfare moved her to collect actual patients stories that document a stunning indictment of a health care system gone awry. Saving The Soul Of Medicine not only reveals how contemporary health care service provider organizations have gone astray from the social and ethical commitments to serving the public, it also advocates for us to take back control of the medical industry as it is currently constituted in the form of managed health care practices as routinely employed by contemporary HMO organizations. Saving The Soul Of Medicine is "must" reading by all health care activists and reformers, health care service providers and insurers, legislators and health care policy makers, and the non-specialist general reader with a vital interest in this pressing and universal social issue.

Survival of Consciousness after Death? .... Really!
Survival of consciousness after death is a topic of great interest to all of us who have lost loved ones that we cherish. As Linda Russek's poignant question to Gary Schwartz, "do you think my father Henry Russek is still alive?" captured Gary's interest and developed into a love for not only Linda's love for her father, but Linda as well. Linda's love for her father was great...and she had a desire for understanding this and who does the universe send her? Gary Schwartz...see how this works? Neat! And Gary had discovered several years earlier, before Linda asked this question, a controversial and challenging theory that he did not wish to risk his well respected reputation on by presenting it at the time it was so "far out" he feared he would be ridiculed and did not want to risk this by presenting this...so now it seems it is not "far out" at all but "far in"...

Where do our loved ones go? Vanished...disappeared? How can this be?... I hope this dialogue with Gary and Deepak at the Chopra Center for Well Being in La Jolla, Ca. is one of many that we will be gifted with by such respected men as Deepak Chopra and Gary Schwartz to help us understand where science and spirituality have interconnected at this juncture in time...all of us will benefit by this heartfelt research,in a easily understandable language, that people who are not in these fields of awareness can understand. Both Deepak and Gary are very well respected and have HUGE credentials towards their credibility that are too numerous to mention but let's just say they are both distinguished and caring...knowledgable and sharing... we are definitely in good company!

Deepak Chopra and Gary Schwartz are to be congratulated for being able to integrate such huge life experiences and knowledge from all their lifelong studies in a dialogue that is easy to comprehend and lead us to an astonishing conclusion that gives huge hope to all of us searching, listening for the words that say science is able to prove that survival of consciousness is not just wishful thinking but actually exists... his research has been subjected to a high degree of scrutiny and no flaw exists in the logic...again...hopeful to hear.

So...Gary and Linda had a secret and a "big secret" at that! And now the time has come to share with all of us and it is a beautiful secret! What better time than the present for such a gift? Thank you both for being so deligent in your passionate pursuit that you would both study it to such a degree with such heartfelt endeavor that the discovery sounds so delightful even now after all of the years that have accumulated waiting for mainstream consciousness to "catch up"...and now we see that Deepak is also able to integrate his wealth of knowledge to successfully integrate all of his lives experience to share this at this moment. And who do I think brought Deepak and Gary together? Deepak's father and Linda's father are both distinguished cardiologists and we hear that they are very caring, as well, and who better than two doctors in Heaven watching over and helping their children on earth accomplish outstanding scientific advancements...both caring and compassionate on earth and now able to bring all of this together because they can! Both heart doctors! I find this extremely interesting that this goes full circle from love from our hearts on earth and extends to the Heavens and back continuing that love...how beautiful is that?

Thank you all for this enlightening discussion...delightful and full of enthusiasm for what the future holds and is ready to reveal...definitely hopeful!

A Book Can Save a Life!
I received this book as a gift and at the time, little did I know that it would save a life--that of my 49-year-old sister who was recently diagnosed with advanced breast cancer.

We read through the book together and followed Dr.Rose's steps and guidelines about why you should seek a Second Opinion. The doctors my sister saw when she was first diagnosed were not experienced in breast cancer. The Second Opinion book gave us the correct advice about what to ask a doctor, such as how many prccedures he/she performed or cases he's/she's handled of a certain type. The most practice advice it gives is: If you don't feel comfortable with the answer you're getting from the first doctor you've seen, definitely get that second opinion!

Needless to say, she sought a Second Opinion at a nearby major medical center that has an entire division exclusively devoted to breast cancer. The doctors here have given her more hope for a longer term survival and even re-evaluated her from a Stage 4 cancer to a Stage 3 cancer, based on their vast knowledge and better experience with this disease.

The advice provided in Second Opinion is accurate, practical, and right on the mark! Anyone considering surgery, whether it's gall bladder or a heart transplant, should would definiately benefit from reading this book and following Dr. Rose's advice. Both my sister and I feel so much more empowered after having read it. And you know what they say: "Knowledge is Power!"

The Second Opinion book also details some of the things she might expect when she has her breast surgery, which makes the whole thing seem a lot less scary.

I don't want to think what the outcome would have been had I not been given this book and shared it with my sister. This is a definit "must read" for anyone who is not getting the medical treatment they feel they should be getting. It's also significant that a doctor is the author and he's the one who's saying: Not all doctors' diagnoses are accurate. Don't take it at face value. Get a Second Opinion.

Enough Said!
