The truth revealed within this book is almost to powerful!
The material and subjects of human behavior revealed in this book are very powerful, real and poignant. To absorb more than a page or two at a time takes much courage and a willingness to understand ourselves as we truly are. After a little while you begin to understand, not only the courage and openness of heart of the Author, but how well she knows what shes trying to bring our attention to. Exceptionally written, a must read!

This is a well thought out book that is very easy to read.
I enjoyed reading the history of Ellicott City, Maryland. It is a very professional book that contains history of the historic town of Ellicott City, Maryland. The writer is a local gentleman who has a wealth of knowledge. He was born and raised in Ellicott City. So many people asked Mr. Shipley to write his recollections of growing up in a small town. This was accomplished through this wonderful publication.

Excellent coverage of the quiet epidemic of the computer age
An excellent sourcebook covering all aspects of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) the new epidemic of the technological age. You may have RSI and not even know it, and if you are reading this review you are definitely at risk for it (computer users are particularly at risk). Almost two-thirds of all workplace injuries in the U.S. are caused by it. The author, a newspaper reporter, describes the injury, what causes it, how to recognize if you have it, how to avoid it if you don't yet have it, the various treatments available, and how it is likely to affect your life outside the workplace. To illustrate each chapter, the author has included interviews with RSI victims from across the country. She concludes with a description of her own affliction with RSI, a story that is searing, yet ultimately uplifting. The most important value of this book is not just that it is a comprehensive review of this disease, but even more importantly, that it calls attention to a disease that can be truly thought of as the new plague of the twentieth century, a disease that has so far claimed its victims in silence. What is particularly insidious about RSI is that unlike the other epidemics that afflicted humankind, the contagion is not spread from person to person, but from machine to person, meaning the epidemic will increase just about as fast as our use of computer keyboards increases. Because this epidemic is not transmitted in the way previous epidemics have been, it has remained a silent yet increaing crippler of otherwise healthy and productive adults. The public awareness that will be required to halt the spread of this disease can be found in the pages of this book. I highly recommend it.

Residents' Teaching Skills

Must-have for interns, residents, TAs & Program Directors.
Since I'm very interested in learning teaching skills required for a resident, I bought this book at the Toronto Bookstore and added it to my Teaching Skill series.

Today your Attending physician (or the Consultant) does not have enough time to teach the medical students. Some of them start to ask you many questions. Now the burden lies on you as a resident to teach them, but you are hesitant to do so ! You're worried about how to deliver the message using a simple and easy-to-follow method for teaching them.
Another scenario, you are on-call, and you ask your clinical clerk a question but she does not seem to be interested in answering you, since she is exhausted. The question is (How do you recognize the "teachabe moment"?).
As we can see, residents play an important role as teachers. In fact, they are responsible for as much as 80% of student teaching. They will be attending physicians one day, and they will have to teach medical students and other residents too. Teaching and communicating are a requirements for the competency of a physician. Now a question is raised (Who will teach the teachers?)

This book effecienctly provides practical guidance to plan, organize, and run a teaching skills program for medical residents.

It's well referenced and uses the most recent research in learning theories and clinical teaching strategies.

- The only obvious drawback of this book is its complicated language. Sometimes I had to re-read a paragraph to understand what te author wants to say.

This book is divided int 2 Parts:

Part 1 (Information and ideas) covers many chapters including:
(Sir William Osler), (Social learning theory and the development of clinical performance), (Clinical teaching techniques for residents), (Observing, developing, and reflecting on residents' teaching strategies), (Planning and implementing a teaching-skills improvement program for residents), (Residents as teachers: evaluating programs and performance), and (Interpretation and projections).

Part 2 (Materials for teaching-skills programs) covers 4 sections:

A). The role of the senior resident team: team manager, leader, and teacher.
Introduction, Course background and evaluation, Course description, Development of a resident teaching skills course, Teaching course Manual for residents, Supervising patient care, Attending interactions, Resident as teacher, Micro-skills of teaching, Feedback and evaluation, Problem behaviors in residents, Substance use, Sexual harassment and gender discrimination.

Section B. Teaching materials for pediatric residents: three modules.
Module I: The student-teacher relationship.
Module II: Teaching in small groups.
Module III: Giving and receiving feedback.

Section C. Teaching skills modules.

Section D. Forms for evaluation of resident teaching-skills programs and resident performance.

It is the 1st edition (2002), and comes in 254 pages; published by Springer Pub Co, in a hardcover copy.

This book is recommended for Teaching Assistants (TAs) in the medical field, interns, residents, chief residents and Program Directors.

Another book I would recommend is (Teaching Tips: Strategies, Reseach, and Theory for College and University Teachers), 11th ed, 2002, for Wilbert J. McKeachie. This book uses simpler language and information, but it's not directed toward medical educators. However, I found it also very useful.

Enjoy reading & learning from this book !

More of Ackerman's most interesting concepts
Yes, it is greatly enjoyable to read intellectually elegant concepts. There is plenty of them in this second volume of Quandaries. This is what really brings progress to medicine. Ackerman certainly is there together with people like Virchow or Rokitansky.

A Great Introduction to Homeopathy
Dr. Moskowitz practices classical homeopathy, and is one of the
most highly respected M.D.s limiting his practice to homeopathy.
Anyone interested in knowing more about alternative medicine will find answers to many questions about how this medical system differs from -- and to many people is superior to -- standard medical practice.

The Rise and Fall of Managed Care: A comprehensive History of a Mass Medical Movement
Published in Paperback by Wyndham Hall Press (02 February, 2001)
Author: Richard Dean, Md. Smith
Amazon base price: $44.00
Average review score:

Scholarly Perspective on a Failed Social Movement
Sometimes, we need the perspective of history to understand the extremes of the cycles of mass human behavior. As health care became ever more expensive in the 1970s and 1980s in the United States, a consortium of academicians, insurance executives, and government beaurocrats developed the concept of "managed care", a method of rationing health care to reduce costs. Employers, patients, hospitals, and doctors "embraced" what was termed "the new paradigm" for the delivery of health care. Visions of "wonderful health care for all, for less than we now pay for it" were described by politicians and promoters. Smith would call it a "mass delusion", another version of tulipomania or market bubble. Unfortunately, the unravelling of the failed movement has been a costly disaster, and now, several years after the publication of this work, we are still picking up the pieces. Red ink rules the day, in hospital systems, academic medical institutions, and in the doctor groups formed to chase the promised riches of managed care. The financial headlines report the latest revelations of the scandals of the once-touted health care corporate executives.
This scholarly work will enlighten the interested reader about the mechanisms and folly of the now-failed era of managed health care.

Robert Cole's World is a great book. Covering the history of Robert Cole and his family from England to their immigration to Lord Baltimore's Colony of Maryland, the book is a must for anyone interested in early American history. Background on the Cole family, 17th century tobacco cultivation, and daily life in 17th century Maryland are all incorporated into this interesting and nicely written book. Included are copies of the Cole family's inventory, as well as Robert Cole's will. For anyone interested in colonial American history and what life was like before American slavery took hold, Robert Cole's world is for you.
