I'm a respiratory therapist and I used some of the pearls in this great to to prepare for my respiratory boards. It helped me tremendeously to understand certain diseases/disorders better. Great book and format. Strongly recommend for future ped pulmonologists, although others in different medical areas will find benefit from it also.

I love this book and recommend it often to the house officers that I teach. It is practical and enjoyable to read. Teaches about everything I never learned in residency, and then some.

Very easy to use reference on PA gardening. Not only includes information on plants that do well in the state, but planting and care instructions. Extensive list of PA gardens to visit will keep you busy for years to come. Detailed zone chart for the state is provided. I would recommended this for the beginner as well as experienced gardener.

This book is based on the experience of the Paul Munk Cardiac Centre in Toronto Canada from where all the contributors come. It is divided into six sections progressing from pre-operative considerations to postoperative ward management. A third of the 40 chapters are surgically orientated but these are useful for anaesthetic trainees to read. Knowledge and understanding of each other's perspectives are essential for first class patient care and this book can provide both.

Throughout the book useful research and audit data from the Toronto computerized database is given, sometimes compared with published figures where they are available. The book has several chapters on complications and the Toronto way of avoiding and managing them, with some notable successes.

As a book this is based on one large and successful centre's way of doing things, it works. There is a selectied reading list for each chapter with mostly up-to-date articles. This handbook achieves its purpose of being a source of practical information for trainee doctors, nurses, perfusionists and other healthcare personnel involved with patients undergoing open-heart surgery. Anaesthetists on their cardiac module would find it helpful and the appendices at the back of the manual give the Toronto algorithms and protocols, from wich some departments may get useful ideas.

This collection of papers from a 1989 conference has lasting value. The papers cover the late Qing, the Republican Period, New Culture and May 4th years, the Mao era, and the first 10 years of Deng Xiaoping's reforms. The book is a must for any East Asian Studies or Modern Chinese History student.

Woodside examines the basic norms and political culture of the imperial era, and how it influenced modern China's path, contrasting China and Europe along the way; while Wakeman describes the adaptation of political ideology to new situations over time.

All the May 4th papers are excellent, but especially Lloyd Eastman's on the economic and environmental causes of the modernity crisis, which led to May 4th. His paper pairs nicely with Zelin's earlier examination of the Qing economy.

Martin King Whyte's paper is especially good as well, comparing the imperial and Maoist states, and their relationship to society. The Maoist state is presented as realizing the imperial dream of total penetration of society, which was previously impossible due to technology and the weakness of the imperial state.

Economists Naughton and Perkins give balanced accounts of Mao and Deng era economies.

Vivienne Shue summarizes the controversial argument in her book _The Reach of the State_, which is, that the Maoist state was not able to penetrate the village and ensure obedience to its directives as thoroughly as it aspired to, that local leaders protected villagers to an extent, and the Dengist reforms accomplished this penetration more thoroughly.

Thomas Bernstein has long been among the most respected China scholars, and his contribution on the Mao era is balanced and insightful. He notes the PRC won mass support and popular legitimacy in the 1950s through its idealism in theory and practice, but that by the end of the Mao period, this faith had was eroded due to "ideological burnout" and the predictable impacts of Mao's view that "left" errors were well intentioned zeal gone too far, while "right" errors were subversive. Given the lack of political freedom after the collapse of the 100 Flowers, left-wing extremism was thus unavoidable. Bernstein gives credit to Mao for his warnings of the party-state becoming a bureaucratic vested interest group (as in the USSR) but correctly notes that he had no solution to this problem other than launching chaotic Cultural Revolutions every 8 years, a "doleful prospect" as Bernstein notes.

The papers on the Deng era are interesting to review in hindsight considering the situation was in radical flux at the time.

A small book with a steep price as is usual the case with narrowly focused scientific publications,but it brings the expertise and collected wisdom of some of the world's best cataract surgeons and phaco pioneers.What differentiates it from other books on the topic,is that it deals with the difficult and out of the ordinary cases,which low amd medium volume surgeons encounter occasionally and frequently hesitate to proceed with phaco,or do mistakes they could avoid if they have read a book like this one.Since the book has earned its price if it helps you even once,it is heartily recommended.

This is a detailed description of Ackerman's views about dermatology, dermatopathology and surgical pathology. Like so many Ackerman's works, it is also a work of art, sometimes with the impressive detail, color and light of stained glass in a medieval church.

This is the first in a series of study guides and they are all excellent. The books are written in such a way to be extremely clinically applicable. If you are studying for technology boards or the nuclear cardiology certification, this series is must have! I love the annotated references. At the end of each of the books there is a quiz, and the editor includes not only an answer key, but thorough explanations of each correct answer. I can't say enough about this series of books - I wish all textbooks were this clinically applicable and immediately accessible. Don't stop at this first one - there are six currently available, each as good as the first!

This book is the best summary of the field of Physical medicine & Rehabilitation available to date

I got this Book during the AAO meeting in Denver. I started reading it and reviewing during my rounds and Case presentations. It has excellent and valuable information on Many topics in addition to physiology. I found it comprehensive, yet easy to read. Several of my Colleagues saw the book and are buying it. I now keep it as a main otology reference on my shelf.
