Lee's Retreat : A History and Field Guide

Lee's Retreat Comes to Life
Noted Civil War historian Chris Calkins provides a great service to those who follow the path of the Army of Northern Virginia and the pursuing Army of the Potomac during the last week of the Civil War in Virginia. This is the latest of several published studies of the Appomattox campaign that Chris has authored.

Drawing upon his tremendous knowledge of the battles that broke the Confederacy's hold on Petersburg and the surrounding area in early April, 1865, Calkins provides a very useful, highly readable guide for those who would like to drive the official "Lee's Retreat" driving tour from Petersburg to Appomattox. The maps by Steve Stanley are excellent. Using "Lee's Retreat: A History and Field Guide", the traveler comes to grips with the first-person accounts that put flesh on the bones of the signs and limited-range AM radio messages available at selected stops along the trail. This nicely designed and sturdily bound paperback guide is well worth the modest cost and may well lead the reader to delve deeper into this fascinating period -- the final days of the Civil War in Virginia.

Life in the Chesapeake Bay

The awesome beauty of small things.
Expanded revision of the 1984 Guide. I live in New Jersey & this wonderful book is one of the best teachers for my home waters.

"Life in Chesapeake Bay" is organized to take the reader from an overview of bay ecology, across the sand beaches, around the piers & pilings, into the intertidal zone, through shallow waters, marshes & then out toward deeper waters. Illustrations are clear line drawings. The scholarship never leaves the reader gasping for air. There's a highly informative glossary & species list.

"Life in Chesapeake Bay" makes a strong pro-environmental statement by showing us the diversity, poetry & interconnectedness of life (including humans) at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the fragility of this great inter-weaving of water, tide, sand & mud. It teaches us the awesome beauty of small things that exist right in front of out eyes.

For a reality check--a must read!
This book is an eye-opener. I am not a radical environmentalist, but I do care about what we do to ourselves and our children. This book is about the indiscriminate use of chemicals & radiation and the results of that use. It is focused on Breast cancer, but can be applied to over all health issues in general. It is easy to read and comprehend. I highly recommend.

An excellent resource!
As a mother of a 15 yr old boy who has a TBI, I've read many books about brain injury. This book is an excellent resource...describing head trauma and how different functions can be affected. It also explains how a person actually comes out of a coma in gradual stages. It addresses so many pertinent issues...I'm so glad I was able to add it to my library.

A great starting point for the parent of a child with SB!
The book goes over specific procedures that are common diagnostic tests for a child with spina bifida and it also is great source of information regarding the physical differences a child with SB may have. It is a "must read" if you love someone with SB! Neurology, urology, orthopaedics and pediatrics are all covered somewhat. Great reference too!

This was the only book which really helped explain it!
As a stroke survivor, I can honestly say that this is the one to own. It explains your stroke to both you and your family in laymen's terms, yet never speaks down to you or leaves you feeling hopeless. A must for the stroke survivor and his/her family.

Mays Makes Sense of Ultra Complex, Often Mismanaged System
Dr. Mays has brilliantly tackled an extremely complex subject about an often mismanaged system in a complete, easily understood work that should be read by anybody even remotely concerned with health care. Lessons learned from the painstaking research Mays completed during his tenure at University of North Carolina, offers solutions that if applied by comminities will save taxpayers millions of dollars and offer low income patients better, more humane and more efficient medical care. Dr. Mays' groundbreaking research shows how so many public health care systems provide overlapping services that carelessly waste money and ultimatly do not serve the people who so desperately need care. Read this book, and you will both be horrified at how medical services are sometimes provided and understand how the future of health care could be so much brighter.

Longevity: An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide
We don't have to develop diseases or lose our mental faculties as we age. Deterioration is not inevitable, according to W. Lee Cowden, M.D., Ferre Akbarpour, M.D., Russ DiCarlo, and Burton Goldberg. They explain why in Longevity: An Alternative Medicine Definitive Guide.

They maintain that many conditions connected with old age are the cumulative effects of lifestyle habits rather than a natural part of aging. Their emphasis is on the quality of later years and continuing good health, rather than in merely increasing the number of years lived. Their goal is to "show you how to 'age well' using safe, noninvasive alternative therapies."
Aging well involves "improving nutrition, reducing stress, detoxifying the body, boosting immune function, balancing hormones, and rebuilding brain power." These are all practices that improve health regardless of age, but are of particular importance as the body grows older.

The authors begin by explaining the changes the body and mind undergo as the years pass. They then detail how readers can develop their own longevity program, customized to their individual body chemistry. Following that is an extensive discussion of the aging factors and how to modify lifestyle habits to minimize the effects of each.

Many pages have "quick definitions" in boxes, so that readers don't have to interrupt their reading to looking up the meanings of specialized terms. Whenever a particular test or medical procedure is mentioned, contact sources are provided in the margins. Cross references are also provided when a subject is discussed elsewhere in the book.

Longevity shows "you how to develop your own personalized longevity program, one which takes into account your biochemical uniqueness and goals [and] help you develop an 'owner's manual' for your body, allowing you to slow the aging process, to increase your life expectancy, your health span, and your quality of life." Readers interested in avoiding deteriorating health in their golden years will find it an essential reference.

Excellent reading for you child!
As an adult I even enjoyed reading this book. I would highly recommend it for your children to read or to read to them during family time. This book kept my interest and I was pleasently please how it was educational for my grandaughter in teaching christian values and life's lessons in a fictional book. She really enjoyed it also. I wish this author would have more books to read. I'm really surprised that he hasn't written more, because I believe he has a wonderful way of offering lessons we all need to learn in a very entertaining way.
