It Couldn't Have Been Done Better
This book is a must for anyone who loves food. Nine comprehensive chapters covering not only fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes, but also meat and poultry, fish and shellfish and dairy and eggs.

The chapter on Nutrition Basics is essential for anyone who wants to come to terms with food and how it relates to good health. Appendicies include a Cooking Glossary (which describes in detail baking, boiling, braising, poaching, pressure cooking, roasting, simmering, steeping, stewing, and on and on ...), Fats and Oils, and Herbs and Spices.

Subsections of each item include topics such as availability, shopping tips, storage, preparations and serving suggestions. Nutritional information boxes are included indicating calories, fat content, protein, carbohydrate, fiber, cholesterol and sodium. Also listed are key vitamins and nutrients.

Fascinating information is also included .. for example, the fruit/vegetable argument about tomatoes is not only settled definitively (botanically a fruit, specifically a berry) but we are also informed that as the result of a tariff dispute, it was officially designated a vegetable in 1893 by the Supreme Court of the United States ... Proving that the court's having their collective head up their robes is nothing new.

If you are serious about learning how to improve your relationship with food (and who isn't?) you've simply got to have this book. I've had mine since 1995 (I got it in conjunction with a subscription to the University of California at Berkeley's Wellness Letter), and I still consult it regularly.

I think that this book, along with Julia Child's "The Way To Cook" would be an excellent foundation for anyone who is serious about health and nutrition.

Fantastic
Everything you need to know, and easy to use. A must for every kitchen. Anyone interested in health and fitness will love this book.

The Wellness Encyclopedia of Food and Nutrition
Absolutely excellent! Every food I've ever looked up has been in this book. It includes thorough nutrition information on all foods. Every food listing includes the following sections: varieties, availability, shopping tips, storage, preparation, and serving suggestions. Also nicely illustrated, well organized. Fabulous resource. Can't wait for the 99 edition.

Informative and thorough
As someone who operates a popular and very informative breast implant web site and forum...I cannot recommend this book enough. Dr. Engler covers everything, including information on other plastic surgery techniques, such as liposuction, breast lifts, breast reduction, and tummy tucks. The complete history of breast implants is covered, as well as the types of implants available (saline and silicone), the silicone controversy, shapes of various implants, placement of the implants, possible risks and complications, as well as before and after photos. This book really has everything. You will learn what to expect at your consultation, to anesthesia, to what the neighbors will say.

Plastic surgery is not something to be taken lightly. Much thought should go into the reasons WHY you want to have the surgery. This is covered in the book as well.

Dr. Engler is a highly respected surgeon, and is a wonderful authoritative source on breast augmentation. If you are contemplating any of the procedures outlined in this book, I urge you to read this book.

Concise, yet thorough. BRAVO!
I have run a popular plastic surgery resource website, IMPLANTFORUM.COM, for over 4 years and I can't think of a thing Dr. Engler neglected to mention in this book, BodySculpture! Dr. Engler covers everything. From what to expect before, during & after surgery to the emotional aspect of undergoing plastic surgery. Each procedure (breast augmentation, breast reduction, liposuction and tummy tucks) is explained thoroughly, yet in easy to understand layman's terms. He details what you'll get from a consult and all your options, to how to prepare for surgery and what transpires during surgery. He lists the risks of each surgery and what to expect when recovering and he does not sugar coat! Bravo!

The book includes lots of before and afters of each surgery, which is a great reference if you are planning on surgery or even if you are only contemplating surgery.

Dr. Engler is a graduate of Yale and is a ABPS board-certified plastic surgeon (the ONLY plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties). He was listed in 'The Best New York Metro Area Doctors' and in New York Magazine's The Best Doctors in New York. His office is in New York City.

Body Sculpture: Plastic surgery of the body for men and wome
An excellent resource for anyone considering plastic surgery. This book is very informative and very simple to understand. Even my plastic surgeon was impressed with how well informed I was at my initial consult. He even asked for the name of this book so he could recommend this book to his patients as a resource prior to surgery. I've been researching this topic for two years and this book, "Body Sculpture: Plastice Surgery For Men and Women" is definetly the most valuable source of information I've come across. To anyone considering plastic surgery, buy this book and read it before your consult. You'll be glad you did.

My funny bone hurts
There is no doubt that humans are the funniest animals on the planet, and appropos of the medical theme of this humorous book, I thought I would make one comment in that vein.

Yes, we humans are pretty funny creatures, but what would you expect of a mammal that actually has a "funny bone?" I'm referring to the upper-arm bone, which is actually named the "humerus." Well, it's actually spelled a little differently, but only by a couple of letters, and that's probably because anatomists didn't usually win first place in their spelling bees in school.

Well, I don't know if the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone myself, but I did learn how to spell way back when. Anyway, this book is sure to tickle the humerus or funny bone in all of us, and it just goes to show you that although seriousness may be only skin-deep, funny is truly to the bone.

The true medicine is humour
As a medical student I really enjoyed reading this book. I've read other books and articles of Bennet, and enjoy his humorous way of putting things. Asa foreigner I had a few difficulties enjoying all of the jokes related to US health services. However, all in all I found the book worthwhile reading, and I had some really big laughs that cramped my stomach. I am sure I am going to read and reread this book in the future.....after all, good humour and hilarious jokes are the best medicine ever invented, and there are no sideeffects!!!

This book is a gem!
This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. Dr. Bennett did a terrific job pulling together both classic and original quotes about doctors and medicine. Enjoy the material when you have some free time during the day or comb through the collection looking for amusing lines to use on rounds, lectures, or other medical situations. Best of all, buy the book for your medical friends or anyone who enjoys funny and insightful lines about doctors, medicine, and health.

Great guide for asthmatics
I have read a number of books and articles on asthma. This is by far the most comprehensive, up to date and it is easy to understand, too. I checked a copy from my library but it is so good that I am going to purchase it for my personal reference library as well as my child's school nurse. This book even has short section explaining cough-variant asthma, which is what both me and my son have...this is a little known type of asthma which in my case was mis-diagnosed for 35 years.

Lifesaver
Read Plaut's book shortly after my oldest son had his first asthma attack which nearly resulted in respiratory failure. Plaut's book is by far my best single source for useful information about causes, prevention and treatment. I consult it regularly and highly recommend it for anyone with or concerned about asthma. It was a lifesaver in my family!!!

A must have for patients, families, & health providers!
I'm a medical librarian/information specialist and I know that there are 'other resources,' but this 'Asthma Guide' should be your first choice because it provides all one needs to understand and manage asthma! I've had asthma for 25 years! And after all this time and treatment, I am reading Dr. Plaut's Asthma Guide, wishing I had this comprehensive resource sooner! After reading only a few chapters, I've already learned so much more to help me and others like me. Thank you Dr. Plaut!

Your Gut Feelings: A Complete Guide to Living Better with Intestinal Problems
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (23 February, 1989)
Author: Henry D. Janowitz MD
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

An Excellent Resource
Janowitz provides a good resource with this book, which provides an overview of possible conditions that affect the lower intestinal tract. This book is not just for someone with a chronic condition, although irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and diverticulitis are covered. Janowitz also has excellent chapters on coping with the occasional food poisoning episode or traveler's diarrhea. His overview of the functioning of the intestinal tract is one the best I've come across in all my resources. As with most intestinal subjects, Janowitz doesn't have a lot of answers - more coping information - but he does seek to present diet and medical therapies for each condition. He does not spend enough time on alternative therapies or the various nutritional concerns that accompany lower GI problems. A good read and possibly a purchase if you suffer from one or more of the problems outlined.

Don't know what's wrong? This book helps find answers!
I have been researching for answers to my personal intestinal problems for 4 years. This is one of my best resources. Easily understood. Everytime I go back to it, I learn something new. Helps fill in the blanks that the doctors don't explain aswell as give reasons for questions to ask your Doctor.

Clear and Understandable Guide
I use this book often, since like many Crohn's sufferers, I also deal with a broad spectrum of intestinal problems. In very clear and understandable language, Dr. Janowitz, a GI at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, and the author of Indigestion and Good Foods for Bad Stomachs provides information on the symptoms and causes of an array of intestinal problems, including IBS, Crohn's & UC, diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, colon cancer, food allergies, intestinal gas and more. He describes the latest tests and procedures (ie. colonoscopies, barium x-rays), medications, and surgical treatments and the risks each carry. This is one of my most used reference books on IBD and other problems, probably because he provides a lot of medical wisdom mixed with good common sense. A Rare Friendship of Love, Humor, and Happiness
"Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart." So very true this quote by Eleanor Roosevelt is many times. In this novel, An American Summer, Christy despite the trials and tributes throughout the novel, learns this through his friendship with Kathryn. Many friendships are based on love, humor, and happiness, but none as strong as the rare friendship of 14-year old Christy Bannister and "iron-lung ridden" Kathryn Slade. This read is a fast-paced page turner that draws you into the plot with each word.

Christy Bannister, a 14-year old boy, has just moved to Baltimore, with his family, because of his dad's job. He's having a hard time making friends when he meets Miss Kathryn Slade. Kathryn is a nice young woman who is stuck in an iron lung for the rest of her life due to getting polio when she was a teenager. Kathryn makes the best of her disibility while enjoying her pool and teaching Christy how to be a "helluva" swimmer. Kathryn and Christy grow very close and Kathryn helps Christy work through his family problems and problems at home.

From Kathryn, Christy learns the meaning of life with her positive attitude. Christy has returned the favor, without even realizing it, for taking the time to be Kathryn's friend. The end of this novel is a tear-jerker that will leave you with so much to think about. Through this novel, you will be drawn into the plot and have learned how important life is.

Friendship is so powerful and influencing. Frank Deford pulls you into his book and you grow to love the characters. You will be wanting to read page after page of this novel looking forward to the new adventures of the characters. In the end, there are many lessons to be learned, but most of all the lesson that you must look beyond what a person looks like on the outside and focus on the personality on the inside. Even if someone is different, they can be the person with the most awesome outlook on life. Despite an illness or deformity, a person can still be an all-around great person with the most positive attitude in the world.

This book is great for mature junior-high students and high school students. There are many issues in this book that a young teenager can relate to but it would also be an enjoyable read for an adult to, because of the lesson of an outlook on life. Overall, I thought this book was a very good and I recommend it to all for a great read.

stays with you
I read this book over 6 months ago, and it still grabs me as one of the best books I've read in the past 10 years. It's easy to fall in love with the characters, and you just don't want it to end. I don't reread books very often, but I'm planning to buy this book and read it again next summer.

Best Read in A Long Time
This great book took me back to the 50's. The plot dealt not only with friendship but family relationships, growing-up, lonliness, and trustworthy sacred relationships. This is the way I remember the 50's. An enjoyable read. It left me feeling good and humbled.

God's Gift to Diving Medicine
After perusing the textbooks of diving medicine, this continues to be a gold standard in the literature. Readers should note it does not compete with the 2003 Bennett and Elliott's Physiology and Medicine of Diving. B&E is more a physiology of normal persons while diving and is geared to being as factually driven as possible. Bove focuses on medical issues and the physiology that makes it happen, with substantial discussion on diagnosis and treatment of diving illnesses and of ill people [Diabetics, Asthmatics etc.] who wish to dive. There is an amount of cross over between both text, but Bove's expert opinion approach fills the many gaps of facts in B&E. You MUST own both texts to cover the field in toto.

Tip: You can read Bove very quickly by reading the last paragraph or sentence in each section, it summarizes the whole block of text very succinctly.

I previously reviewed the 3rd Edition, just received the 4th, and after a cover to cover dissection must applaud its extensively updated chapters notably cardiology, decompression science, treatments and diagnoses, updated appendix on Diabetes mellitus and diving. More focus is made on hydrostatic pressure spikes in the reduction of bubble formation, data that although present in the 3rd Edition, did not get as much emphasis. The timeliness of the updates is in tune with the zeitgeist for bubble decompression models used in technical diving gaining momentum since Year 2000 [VPM and RGBM.]

The quality of the book's hardbound production has diminished, as the rugged linen-type cover binding, extant in the past WB Saunders Editions, has been replaced by a glossy paper overlay on cardboard, reflecting a new philosophy of the books publishers, Elsevier, and of WB Saunders to a fading trademark. The print itself seems sharp, and appears more like a laser printer output on 'economy' mode. The cover binding is hastily pasted in my edition, compared to the meticulous tight binding, and near flawless lines of the 3rd Edition. There are over a 100 new pages in this edition. Bookmaking, a dying art!

The editing is superb, near typo free, to this reviewer at this time, compare against typos present in 2003 B&E and the 2000 NOAA Diving Manual. Inconsequential, but reflects the rigor by which Dr. Bove put into crafting this textbook.

A Classic
My favorite diving medicine textbook. If you like the no-nonsense format of the NOAA Diving Manual, Bove too, shoots from the hip. Bove is best in the hands of medical professionals, as brevity in some discussion presumes a background in medical care. Focusing on medical professionals may limit its audience, but astute readers anywhere may appreciate its directness, as a distillation, its strong spirit. Diving Medicine is a MUST for any physician treating civilian divers, and its format makes for quick reference for primary care gives who occassionally encounter divers with medical issues.

Passed the Boards!
I read this book cover to cover before taking Medical Boards in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. I enjoyed the experience greatly, and passed the Boards. It is well-organized and easy to read if you have at least a diving background. I am a pulmonary and critical care specialist (and diver) and found it very straight-forward. I recommend reading this book in conjunction with the US Navy Diving Manual which is available through .... in print (but I prefer the CD ROM published by the Navy and others). We keep these references at our hyperbaric unit at UCLA where we have already done 4 Table VI treatments this week.

He's Talented
Dr. Ruden is my Physician and all I will say is that he is the best doctor I have ever have. If I ever have to switch Insurance and have to go outta network to see him, I will.

When you read this book, let it be known that you are in good hands.

Follow up:
On Jan. 23/00 I was waxing and waning on the merits of this bio-balance approach to addiction. Well , confession time ; I wrote that the day I severed the bond (33 years) with nicotine How - Zyban - if that is O.K. to mention .... but somehow ,in someway , that particular concotion ... ( its really wellbutrin), did everything that Ruden talks about.... it is definitely in the neuro-chemical balance in the brain; for me it worked; it cut the chord so to speak; ever since I can decide that I do not wish, desire or want to smoke......and 347 days later still agree with delightful easement. If only the medical establishment would get serious and start doing some baseline metabolic type test : why did it work on me and not on .. Joe or Mary ???? Letsget with it!

Forward Thinking !
Finally , something on , about addictions that seems to hit the proverbial nail on the head. A forward assault on the bottom line of'addiction' ..the craving brain .....the complex of neuro-chemicals , especially dopamine and serotonin , and the yin/yang; up.down ; getting the right balance. Presented as a theory ... as such holds the potential as a very fruitful theory.

Almost Complete
This is (by far) the best Prescription Drug guide I've seen. The pros: I do agree with the other customers who said it was easier to read than the PDR. More comprehensive than the PDR. More organized than the PDR, etc. The con: I am a patient who takes many, many drugs. Unfortunately some of them are rare drugs which aren't used for many people such as "Trental" or "Clindamycin." These drugs are listed, but they note that: "This profile has been shortened to make room for more widely used medicines." I understand the book is well over a 1000 pages, but having shortened reviews of meds wasn't the most pleasing thing.--I do need complete info for these particular drugs and was not able to get it from this guide. I did not see this problem with the PDR. On the Whole: What I do like about this book the most is that everything about it is very logical. The saving space bit is understandable, but if you're taking many rare drugs and need complete info. on them, I'd reccommend browsing the book before buying it/or buying the PDR instead.

A Laypersons Guide to Prescriptions
Maybe I'm parinoid, but that doesn't mean that I can read my doctors writing on my families prescriptions, or that I know all the generic names of the drug I'm suppose to be taking, or that the pharmicist really checked for drug interactions. This book will help clear things up. It lists every drug you could think of, with generic brands, has color pictures of hard to identify drugs.

Especially useful are the details on drug interations, including herbal medications (e.g. don't take St. Johns Wort with birth control pills) and common foods (e.g. some drugs do not mix will with grapefruit). Long also lists medical conditions that do not mix well with drugs (e.g. diabetes) as well as the risks of smoking and taking a certain drug, or the possible effects of the drug on pregnancy (very complete information here).

Even if you only take one or two Prescription drugs this is a good book to own, your health is worth it. Also, you can look up friends and relatives drugs and find out what they are taking them for, as well as possible side effects or harmful interactions. This would be a good gift for an elderly parent or friend.

Absolutely the best!
I have been buying this book for years. It's better than anything else I've tried. It's easier to read than the PDR. It's much more comprehensive than other books, software programs or information on the internet.
