Excellent! A must-have reference for on-call!This book has long been considered an excellent pocket reference for on-call pediatrics and quick-reference topics. Even past editions seemed more useful to me than even the excellent Harriet Lane handbook. With the 10th edition, the Hospital for Sick Children Handbook has greatly improved on its previous formula. It is more detailed, more complete and up to date with the latest information and standards of care.
Strengths include the new fold-out emergency drug reference card and fold-out flowsheet on common emergency conditions like anaphylaxis, status epilepticus and hyperkalemia. If the book has any weakness, it is that the print is quite small and the book is a little heavier than the 9th edition. But again, there's way more information!
This book is highly recommended to all pediatricians!

This book will answer your questionsThis book was, in on word, great. I am a faithful reader of psycology and psychiatry books and this was one of the best I have read. It was very informative and shed a great deal of light on a very sensitive subject. Psychotherapy is a gentle process and can become overwhelming to some people at times. During those times, it is good to know there are books out there like this one. It will give you hope. Isn't that what we all search for?

The book on diabetes we all need to have!It is such a relief to have an up-to-date book about diabetes that's readable and understandable. It answers so many questions that my doctors don't have time to answer, and it gives me so much information on issues I never even thought about! Thank you, Dr. Alterman

A "Must Have" Book for ParentsI am so glad I've read this book while my 2 kids are still toddlers and I'll kep on reviewing it as my kids grow. Dr. Vinzon's guidlines on how to set limits and boundaries are very practical, caring, relevant and helpful. As I read through the different chapters on stages of child development I gained more control and confidence on my parenting ability. The book also addressed several issues important to parenting today like schedules, work, school, carpools, etc.

Very helpful-- strongly recommended. This book is full of practical, realistic advice and information. It will help people gain better perspective on the condition of their marriage, and what they can do to make their marriage better. Unlike most of the marriage books out there, it is not preachy, and not full of wonderful ideas which will be forgotten the next day or which are too difficult/unrealistic to put into practice. Also, while this book does not take any strong positions on gender issues (it is quite neutral in general, and has no religious or other agenda), it is about as non-sexist as they come, and the author is clearly aware of and sensitive to those issues. Another wonderful aspect of this book is that it gives couples several chapters of information about marital counselling (when to get it, what to expect, etc.), drawn from the author's own experience as a long-time marital therapist. I strongly recommend this book, for any married couple.

A lot of practical informaltion about injuries and treatmentThe contributors to this book have a lot of practical experience in acturally treating the problems they report. The list of contributors reads like a "who's who" of sports medicine. The suggestions for rehabilitation as well as the description of surgical interventions really gives a well rounded approach. I like this book along with the companion field guride. Topics in the book cover the whole spectrum of nutrition, women athletic conditions, evaluation, physical therapy, surgical interventions, returning to competition after injury, peripheral injuries as well as prevention and treatment of spinal injuries. A really good book for physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists and others interested in knowing more about sports related injury and treatment.

A Must Read for New Cardiac Care ProfessionalsI had an opportunity to purchase and read Dr. Phibbs' latest text, "The Human Heart: A Basic Guide to Heart Disease," about a year ago. I was impressed with the breadth of the commentary and the organization of the material. I work in the pharmaceutical industry and I read many technical and instructive materials. Dr. Phibbs' explanations and diagrams were pristine and useful and had helped me to broaden my cardiovascular vocabulary to discuss cardiac complications more clearly. I have recommended this book to others in the industry.

Evocative tales of family and place.Tilghman is gifted with the ability to express the secret yearnings, fears, regrets, and resentments of characters who can't speak for themselves. Perhaps the best example of this is "A Gracious Rain," in which Stanley, a blue-collar worker, ponders the meaning of life and feelings he can't articulate even to himself. Stanley's general satisfaction with his life forms a poignant contrast to his untimely death from a heart attack. The story's brooding, ruminative tone infuses this tragedy with a kind of eerie calm. At the story's close, Stanley becomes omniscient in death, like the characters in "Our Town." As he looks into the souls of those he knew, he discovers that it's the absence of pat answers to life's great questions that keeps us going.
Most of the stories in this collection deal with fathers, especially those trying to hold together shaky family foundations in the face of uncertain futures. Readers will find their thoughts turning again and again to the insights these stories impart--the mark of satisfying, skillful fiction.
