Essential reading
This should be required reading for any physician caring for the breastfeeding mother or the breastfed baby. With all of the mythology surrounding breastfeeding and the wide range of advice given to nursing mothers, it is essential that practitioners give accurate, informed advice. Reading this book will allow health care professionals to do so.

Excellent and educational for the medical profession
As a gynecologist based in Spain, I found this book extremely helpful while counseling my patients about breastfeeding, and while breastfeeding myself. I think most obstetrical textbooks do not cover enough the aspect of breastfeeding, and numerous questions remain to be answered, some as simple as: both breasts or one breast?. These simple questions, however, are an important source of stress to new mothers. Apart from that, the more "medical" aspects of the book are also exceptional. A must for all medical professionals involved in pregnancy, birth and infant care.

Breastfeeding: A Guide for the Medical Profession
I am a IBCLC and work in a NICU with very small premature &/or sick newborns. As a nurse I very frequently use Dr Lawrence's book when there is a conflict with a doctor over the care of our breastfeeding babies. Dr Lawrence's book is compleatly research based and written with authority --- no touchy/feely all professional. It is a great book to use to study for the lactation exam !!! Get the newest copy date you can find -- doctors respect new information.

Close Encounters-The Intimacy Bible
GREAT BOOK!!!! As the introduction of the book states, "You want intimacy, so go out there and get it!". A great first step in achieving this goal is to read this book. Not just once, but I believe every couple should each reread it once every three months. That is why I call this book the Intimacy Bible. Men and women are inherently different creatures. However, one's marriage is the most important relationship you will ever undertake. It's amazing how people will spend ten hours per day at a job, three hours a day in front of a television, one hour day eating, however, they spend no time at all educating and refining their marital/relationship skills. The reason I love this book is that every page is chock full of great information and ideas for a successful relationship. Unlike most books in which the author wastes your time with a lot of mindless jabber, this book cuts to the chase on every page. I can actually place myself in each of the one hundred tips/questions and the answers are fabulous. The reader walks away armed with a multitude of helpful tips they can use immediately in improving their relationship. If you seek real intimacy and a great relationship, read this book and buy an extra copy for your mate. I guarantee, if you follow these tips, it will improve your relationship tremendously.

Practical and Powerful
This is a must read for anyone having trouble in their relationship or anyone wanting to recapture the intimacy they once knew.

Exceptional
Exceptional!...Close Encounters presents outstanding advice and sets it forth in a logical, direct and intelligent manner. It should be required reading for any study of relationships. Absolutely outstanding - you are guaranteed to enjoy this book and to learn from it. Buy more than one copy, because you certainly will give it as a gift and will not want to give up yours. Stop reading this and place your order...

Dr. Coleman Gives Inside Scoop on Working with Families
Dr. Coleman's book gives a vivid and practical approach for understanding families and how families influence all aspects of a child's health and life. He then takes the next step and gives wonderful ideas about how to incorporate that insight into pediatric care. I really enjoyed the "fly on the wall" perspective and could observe an expert handle situations I would find challenging. This book is helpful for trainees but also for more experienced pediatricians who are looking for a way to connect in more meaningful ways with children and their families.

Wonderful resource for pediatric caregivers
This book is an extremely valuable resource for the pediatric professional!! Using Dr. Coleman's methods, providers learn how to draw out families and include them in the diagnostic and therapeutic process. Not only will patient relationships be enriched, but the entire experience of practicing medicine is more meaningful.
This book gives the reader a step-by-step plan for including the family perspective in pediatric care. There are case examples, a chapter on billing, and a crash-course in family therapy. It will not gather dust on your shelf and is worth the investment! I'm sending a copy to my own pediatrician!

Great Reference for Every Pediatrician
Dr. Coleman's book is a must for clinicians working with children and their families. His insight and sensible approach to many commonly encountered pediatric behavioral problems are presented in an easy to read format that any busy clinician would find practical. Its family focused perspective is sure to add a new and rewarding characteristic to the work of those clinicians caring for children. It is a worthwhile addition to any pediatric library.

Critically important guidelines for healthy habits.
Steven Jonas, M.D. is a nationally recognized health-care expert. He teaches preventive medicine, and has written several books on staying healthy. He's teamed up with another health writer, Maria Kassberg Regan, to produce Help Your Man Get Healthy: An Essential Guide For Every Caring Woman. Dr. Jonas and Regan say that "studies have shown conclusively that both heart disease and cancer--the top two killers in the nation--can be prevented by avoiding negative health habits and engaging in certain positive ones." They then describe the common negative habits, such as smoking, and helpful positive habits, such as reducing stress. They've included a chart which shows the number of years life can be shortened by each negative habit compared with the number of years gained by following a few positive habits. Obviously people are responsible for their own health habits, so why did Regan and Dr. Jonas write a guide for women to help improve their husband's health? Women already have enough responsibilities! They offer several reasons, including the fact that men simply don't know as much about good health practices as women do. For example, most women's magazines print lots of health-related articles; few men's magazines are health-oriented. Regan and Dr. Jonas do not advocate making women responsible for their man's health--their goal is to give women the tools they need to encourage good habits in all those they care about. They provide several quick and simple quizzes to help readers zero in on various kinds of difficulties. They then provide extensive information on motivation-- yes, men are motivated in much different ways than women are. They also provide tips on communicating effectively with men. For example, men prefer hard information to empathy. Dr. Jonas and Regan maintain that "for many, healthy habits mark the difference between a life that's long and vigorous and one that's curtailed by chronic disease or shortened by death." Readers will find that Help Your Man Get Healthy will provide the guidelines and assistance they need to help those they love develop healthy habits and improve the quality of their lives.

Notable for its practicality - and it works!
The topic, I'm sure, is on the minds of many married couples. Kassberg and Jonas define a collaborative approach to toughening up the oafish husband - softened by marriage and the attendant collapse of physical self-discipline - that's as effective as it is commonsensical. Real-life examples are particularly instructive, and the benefits of the approach become evident within days, not weeks, as the reader "gets on the same team" as the target partner in the battle against sloth, weakness and ill-health. Easy-to-read, well-researched, and original, this book is the right answer to the age-old question, "What the hell happened to the guy I married - and what can I do about it?" Buy this one today.

An enjoyable (and healthy) read for men too!
As a man, I read "Help Your Man" with not just a little bit of skepticism (we don't need any help!) but was I ever surprised! "Help Your Man" provides clear and understandable synopses of relevant and common health related matters which can be prevented or improved by simple changes of behavior. It is all coupled with simple, common sense (but not obvious) suggestions on how to help your man (or yourself!) change those unhealthy behaviors. Besides all that, it reads quite nicely!

It's like a one-stop-shop for such information. I will be sure to keep it handy!

Best advice for home buyers and allergy sufferers
An important book to have- especially for doctors and families with allergies!

In this book, May and Samet explain, clearly and understandably, what things can happen in a house to cause allergic reactions and asthma flare ups in even the healthiest of people and how to remedy the problem.

For those of us who suffer from enviromental sensitivities, this book is a wonderful way to help your family and friends understand exactly what you're going through with "hard science" to back it up.

And if you're buying a house, reading this book will tell you things to look for during pre-sale inspection that could possibly save you thousands in the long run. (Especially since the insurance industry is becoming increasingly unwilling to pay for mold or mildew related claims

A really helpful book
I've read several other books on this topic, plus consulted with a doctor specializing in environmental illness (EI), but I still learned a lot from this book and it's my favorite. Why? Because it's full of practical, doable things YOU can do around your house to make it a healthier environment. Many of the other EI folks want you to tear your house apart, even when there's no evidence that your house is the culprit. This approach makes far more sense. Some patients must, of course, take drastic measures, but many of us do not. Start with this book, then read John and Lynn Bower's books if you need more detail. It's an easy read and cheap. I highly recommend it.

An Excellent Book!
I read this book with a great deal of interest. Recently my sister-in-law was getting sicker and sicker from living in a toxic mold infected apartment. One doctor diagnosed her as having MS and another suggested psychiatric treatment! She got sicker and sicker, started to really lose it, her speech was becoming garbled, she felt like she was losing her memory. In mid-sentence she would suddenly lose her train of thought. I took some mold spore counts in her bedroom and they were through the roof. Finally after constant pestering on my part, they moved into a hotel. Immediately she started to get better.
Today, living in a different apartment, a much cleaner one, she is well again, back to work too.
I do research and write about plants and allergies (Safe Sex in the Garden) and although this fine book by May doesn't touch on outside landscapes, he does do an excellent job of exploring sickness-causing agents within the house. He gets deeply into all parts of a house, from the attic to the basement.
For many people affected by allergies, asthma, and a host of related environmentally triggered illnesses, reading this book would be an excellent idea. If I had one knock on the book it would be that the whole subject of what is growing right outside the bedroom window is ignored. But, to be fair, May sticks to what he knows best here. I have had numerous clients who would wake up every morning feeling lousy, often with sore throats. No one seemed to be able to figure out his or her problem. When I was asked to look over their properties for highly allergenic plants I'd often find a profuse pollen-producing shrub or tree right outside their bedroom window. Sometimes the offending shrub will be a male Podocarpus or a male Yew, both of which produce considerable pollen that is light, dry, tiny, allergenic, and quite poisonous. The solution in these cases is simple; replace the shrub. I recently photographed some of this pollen through my microscope, on a glass slide, over which I placed a small piece of window screen. The photo is impressive. Close to a thousand grains of this pollen could pass, simultaneously, through each tiny square of the window screen!
But I digress. This book, My House is Killing Me! Is a fine book and answers many important questions about indoor pollutants. Jeffery May has provided a valuable contribution to the field of indoor, household contaminants. I highly recommend it.

Secret Justice
If you like Tom Clancy, Stephen Coontz, Stephen Hunter and Dale Brown you will like James W. Huston's " Secret Justice ".

Lieutenant Kent " Rat " Rathman is a mix of John " Jack " Patrick Ryan and Mr. Clark. Caution ! Once you start this book you won't want to put it down for a minute. Be prepared to clear off your schedule and stay up late. I would rate this book 5 stars. I am looking forward to his next book.

There Is A Lot of Truth in this Fiction - A Must Read!!
James W. Huston has written another top flight novel about the world we live in. Well, we all live in it, but few of us experience it like Kent Rathman,a/k/a Rat, who is simply the best counter terrorisim person in the service of the United States. So why is he on trial? Charged with manslaughter of a terrorist. The answer to that question is a rich mix of characters. Politicians, military people, terrorists, the media and on and on are the components of a novel which you will not want to put down. Huston catches the biases and fears of many in this country on one of the burning issues of our time and gives the reader both a terrific read and many things to think about.

Super Read - scary premise
This is such an appalling, yet possible plot! One hates to think this could really happen...Great characters and the sub-plots weave together very well. Action packed - fast read! RTG's in Russia? - I certainly believe that! This could take terrorism to a new high - Huston does a lot of research and knows his subject matter. I have read all of his books and this is best yet! RAT is a super character - thought Skyles was too!

Keep'em coming Jim!

Priceless for those who love Baltimore
This book is a unique combination of biography, city-history, and insight into the feelings and production of a gifted, self-taught artist. Tony DeSales overcame limitations of means and circumstance to bear witness to the city and neighborhood he loved.

The authors of this book, in turn, do justice to the artist's life and deep-felt monochrome and color sketches. Writing, production, and reproduction of the artwork are all first-rate.

This book is a bargain at its price, and is priceless for those who share Tony DeSales' love for Baltimore.

Baltimore's Own Little Italy Artist
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in street art and the Baltimore area. It is packed with Tony's beautiful artwork and the authors' detailed stories of the area. Every Baltimorean should own a copy. Rita and her co-authors have done a superb job.

Baltimore's Little Italy Artist
This book is like a trip down "memory lane" for those of us who grew up in Baltimore. It is apparent that a great deal of thought went into the prepartion of this book. The full page prints are nicely presented on glossy paper. This is also an inspiring story of a man's generosity to his family and his community via his artwork.

Most incredible and so informative!
This book is so simple to read and once you start you don't want to put it down. The first few pages make you want to run out to the grocery store and hit the produce isle. It honestly makes you change your entire way of thinking when it comes to eating. You'll want that fruit salad rather than the candy bar. It's just such' a GREAT and easy to read and so easy to absorb book! Everyone is getting one for christmas!

Happy eating-

Color Code Works!
I see Dr. Nadeau for assistance in my weight loss & I use his book as my guide when he is not available for answering my questions. It is an awesome book. I am losing weight with excersizes he has recommended for me & the diet he has worked out for me personally. You will not be disappointed in purchasing this book.

Amazing Power of Fruits and Vegetables
Mom always said to eat your vegetables. But if she failed to convince you, "The Color Code" takes up where Mom left off. This book is a compelling and well-researched argument for the many ways in which vegetables-and fruits-contribute vitally to health.

We should all eat a rainbow of 9-10 brightly-colored fruits and veggies daily, explain co-authors Joseph, Nadeau and Underwood-not just strive for "5 a day" while repeating the same limited repertoire of pale foods. Color matters because many of the most amazing nutrients are in the pigments that color fruits and vegetables.

You may have heard of some of these pigments, without realizing they were actually pigments. Beta-carotene, an antioxidant that helps the body manufacture Vitamin A, is the orange pigment in carrots and sweet potatoes. Lycopene, touted in the media with headlines like "tomato sauce prevents prostate cancer," is the red pigment in watermelon and pink grapefruit as well as in tomatoes. Lutein, which studies recently tagged as key to eyesight, is found in greens like spinach, kale and even parsley. Once the authors explain that each pigment color has different health-giving properties, it's easy to understand why "eating the rainbow" is important.

Most of these pigments are antioxidants. If you've heard this term before but have had trouble understanding what antioxidants are and why so many diseases are linked to oxidative stress in our bodies, read "The Color Code." It caps a very understandable section on antioxidants with the following paragraph:

"If you want to see antioxidants at work, one place to look is your own kitchen. If you've ever sliced an apple and watched it turn brown, you've seen the effects of oxidation. But what if you dip the apple slices in lemon juice first, as many recipes recommend? Then you can boldly let the apple slices sit out and dare them to turn brown. The vitamin C in the lemon juice is a potent antioxidant, and it will intercept the oxygen before it can strike the fruit. [p. 12]"

As this example hints, "The Color Code" is well-structured and engagingly written. The three authors-Jim Joseph, a nutrition researcher at Tufts; Dr. Dan Nadeau, a diabetes specialist; and Anne Underwood, a Newsweek health reporter-introduce themselves early on, giving the text an approachable personality. Tight writing and solid scientific references balance the folksy tone, ensuring that "The Color Code" doesn't read like a fad diet-guru book.

After the introductions and overview are chapters on each of the four pigment-color groups: red, orange-yellow, green, and blue-purple. Within each of these chapters are separate entries for 8-14 different fruits or vegetables. Each entry lists the food's pigments, its other phytonutrients, and its vitamins, then proceeds with a sales pitch including everything from scientific research to cooking tips-whatever the authors think will convince you to Eat This Now. Who knew that blueberries could reverse the effects of aging in rats, or that lemon-zest may prevent skin cancer?

While the book recommends a "semi-vegetarian" diet, its authors readily admit that you should eat more than just fruits and vegetables. A general chapter on nutrition advises that whole grains should cover half your plate at mealtime, with vegetables making up another 30-40% and the remaining 10-20% given to healthy proteins (legumes, fish or poultry). Sensible advice on essential fats, portion control and exercise rounds out this chapter, which ends with a sample 7-day meal plan.

Since it's easy for good intentions to slip away from us, "The Color Code" includes a scoring system to help reinforce new "rainbow eating" habits. The goal is to score 100 Color Points every day. You get 10 points for every serving (serving sizes are roughly 1/2 cup). But, since variety is important and some foods are healthier than others, you get 5 bonus points for a) eating something from the authors' Top Ten list b) covering all four color-groups in one day c) drinking two cups of tea or d) eating a fruit or veggie you haven't had in the previous year. It's a catchy system that may appeal to some folks, but others may prefer the simplicity of just remembering to eat lots of different brightly-colored fruits and vegetables.

The book concludes with about 75 recipes and a bibliography detailing the many research studies referred to in the color chapters. My few minor criticisms of The Color Code stem from these two sections. The recipes are simple and easy, reproduced from other sources in most cases (appropriate, since the authors aren't dieticians or cooks). But I'm surprised to see white rice-even high-glycemic sushi rice-included several times despite the authors' earlier exhortations to eat whole grains. The recipes are sometimes a bit hard-core satfat phobic, too, calling for egg substitutes and no-fat salad dressings, where I'd be inclined to use a real egg and a dash of olive oil. As for the bibliography, it's useful but actual footnotes or page references might be even more helpful, allowing those intrigued by the text to more readily research the original study.

I highly recommend "The Color Code." While its authors readily admit that some of the research cited is preliminary-scientists are just beginning to learn about plant pigments and phytonutrients-I'll happily eat more fruits and veggies now, rather than waiting for long-term double-blind studies to be completed.

The authors say it best: "...if greengrocers had the marketing muscle of drug companies, we would all be racing to try this miracle regimen. Patients would demand that their doctors prescribe it. Consumers would flock to the produce aisles to snap up these lifesaving foods....Again and again, the same bottom line emerges: whole foods-colorful foods-deliver protection against a broad range of ailments."

We found this book to be an excellent guide, answering our questions or informing us of what to expect before, during and after surgery. Easy to understand and very helpful. A must for any family dealing with prostate or prostate cancer concerns. We recommend the book!

Confident Decision
I found this book to be informative, written on a level that is easily understood by the lay person. Reading this book helped me to make decisions regarding my situation with confidence. Would recommend this book to any family facing prostate cancer and also to those men who have a history of prostate cancer in their families.

a must for the man who has been diagnosed with pro. cancer
my otherwise healthy 52 year old husband has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. no one knows the horrible shock and helpless feeling a person goes through in finding out he has this cancer until it happens to you. i read the entire book to him out loud on a road trip this weekend. actually, i skipped the parts that addressed bph and other things beside cancer that can happen to the prostate. also skipped the discussion of treatments other than removal of the prostate which is what he has decided to do. the format is so "user-friendly". it is filled with a wealth of information for whatever treatment the man decides upon. at one point, i ask my husband if he was tired of me reading and he said "no"....it really helped him a lot. this is a scary time for us both and the book gave us knowledge to use for fighting our fears.
