Weight Loss Plan for the Educated Consumer
Dr. JB's Your Way Diet Plan for Weight Loss

This book is recommended for the thinking reader with a weight problem. By explaining how the body metabolizes food, Dr. JB shows how a diet can be fashioned to match a person's taste and be adjusted to his life style. To start, withdrawing 3500 calories will result in a one pound weight loss. Thus, trimming one's food intake by 1000 calories a day will result in a 2 pound weight loss in one week. That is an undisputable fact. But this book is not a dry recitation of scientific data. The author is a humanist with a keen sense of people's motivation, psychic needs and instincts. He eschews crash diet programs based on fads resulting in rapid weight loss, impossible to maintain because the plan is nutritionally unsound and the menu intolerably monotonous and boring. JB offers a plan that allows the dieter a choice of food that he usually likes to eat. He give the caloric value and daily requirements of carbohydrates, proteins and fats such as bread, meat and milk and then provides the reader with a vast "exchange food" list which allows for an infinite variety of menus, adjusted to an individual's taste and preference. There is much information of great practical value such as: an individual diet plan worksheet; an assessment of one's body type; a method of calculating one's desirable weight based on age; a simple explanation of food labeling that is very useful in avoiding hidden calories; a guide to the caloric content of popular appetizers (did you know that 8 stuffed potato skins contain 1060 calories!); a lucid exposition of the "dread plateau", that time in the course of losing weight when no matter what one does his weight will stay flat and will not change for a period of time, and how to overcome it.

While presenting the reader with a scientific basis of weight loss, Dr. JB does not ignore the psyche. He understands people's pleasure and comfort in eating food they like. His tone is that of a understanding and enthusiastic, supportive and kindly but intellectually uncompromising coach who guides the reader through planning a menu he can live with for the rest of his life in order to look good and feel good.

FANTASTIC ATTITUDE!!
This is a revision of Dr. Susan Love's Hormone Book - which was updated and republished after the Prempro arm of the Women's Health Initiative was halted.

The best thing about this book is its perspective. Susan Love writes as a woman experiencing menopause. She's a doctor and serious researcher who insists on hard EVIDENCE, not just good theories. She's a doctor who feels a responsibility to her patients and readers, a responsibility to fully and accurately INFORM them, so that they can make their OWN choices. She's a researcher who knows how to analyze and re-analyze data. She is open minded.

This book sets out to inform women about menopause, its mechanisms, its symptoms, its accompaniments, and ALL the available treatment choices from positive thinking, to diet, to acupuncture, to herbs, to pharmaceuticals, to exercise, and everything in between. It includes information on what is and isn't known about each possible treatment, as well as the risks and benefits of each.

Dr. Love is not looking for "converts" to one side or the other of the "hormone wars," as so many menopause/hormone authors seem to be. She is not the sort of doctor who tells patients/readers what to do. She clearly feels that every woman should make her OWN choices, and that those choices will be different for each individual woman. While educating her readers, she is also good enough to state her own positions, so readers can factor in consideration of her personal prejudices. Yet, she clearly supports women's choices whether or not they are ones she would make herself. She asks only that those choices be based on understanding and knowledge.

The Prempro phase of the Women's Health Initiative was halted due to the serious side-effects of that drug. Susan Love largely predicted those results in the earlier editions of this book. She had the courage to stand-up to other doctors in a field which is not her specialty (she's a breast surgeon), and question the "evidence" upon which they relied for their theories and therapies. She stuck to her guns although she was severely criticized (and readily admitted when she herself was in error). Despite the fact that Dr. Love was widely vindicated by the Women's Health Initiative, she refrains from taking an "I told you so" position in this new edition that incorporates the Prempro findings of the WHI.

This book goes further than just informing. It goes into detail on just about every possible form of menopause therapy: eastern, western, new-age and old wives' tale. It also details virtually every variety of drug, every dosage, every form of administration, as well as the particulars of what actions specific medications, herbal and naturopathic remedies might have. Dr. Love educates us with whatever solid knowledge there is about each, and she gives us tools to help evaluate future data. She is a scientist whose mind is open to considering all possibilities. And, she's a woman who knows the menopause experience.

A MUST REFERENCE FOR ANY CLINICIAN
I am a senior psychiatry resident and have found the Drug Information Handbook for Psychiatry to be an excellent reference for not only psychotropic medicines, but medications in general. Each drug listing has detailed, comprehensive information, which guides the clinician to dosing strategies, side effects, and drug-drug interactions, and more. There is not a drug that I have needed to find information on that is not in this book. I was also surprised to see that it has over the counter drugs, including non-allopathic remedies which often are being used by my patients.

Modern Psychiatry
You cannot call yourself a Psychopharmacologist, or even a modern Psychiatrist if you are not practicing with an understanding of P450 and how this is affecting your patient. Ever wondered why your patient is having unexpected reactions to the addition or subtraction of medications, or perhaps why the antidepressant you selected isn't working or why the mood stabilizer levels aren't adding up? Quite simply the liver makes enzymes that are having an effect on your medications, particularly in combinations of medications. You need to know who is doing what to whom and why and this book will explain that. This book is the result of an accumulation of much tedious scientific data transformed by this well-respected psychiatrist into pleasing vingnettes which you can translate into practice.

This book, which is not to be confused with Dr. Dean Ornish's Eat More, Weigh Less, was inspired in part by Dr. Shintani's former colleague, Dr. John McDougall, who's noted for his own low-fat, anticancer diet books. Dr. Shintani's mantra is, "Dieting is dead, eat more instead!" He's compiled 175 recipes designed to promote weight loss while preventing hunger pangs and food cravings. The program is vegan and therefore cholesterol-free, and focused on low-fat, locally grown, seasonal whole foods. The recipes are definitely heavy on the sea vegetables and protein products (Wakame with Carrots; TVP Chili, Tempeh Cutlets; Seitan Ginger Stir-Fry) and chock full of beans. Cheeseburger lovers will have a hard time adjusting, but those willing to devote some time to making their diets healthier will find plenty of recipes to keep them busy.
Average review score:

Best "non diet" diet book written
Dr. Shintani gives a very detailed account of how diet effects our bodies. He discusses the benefits of eating the right foods and how they relate to our over all health. This book outlines what foods benefit and what foods hurt our health. Dr. Shintani backs up his statements with medical facts. I enjoyed the book and hope to be able to follow Dr. Shintani's guidelines.

My media review...
The ECG in Acute MI provides a quick reference text for use in critical clinical situations in which accurate ECG interpretation will lead to more rapid recognition of appropriate candidates for reperfusion therapy, as well as a text for more detailed study of electrocardiogram interpretation. This manual is intended for all clinicians that may have to recognize and treat an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Thus, this book is for emergency department physicians, cardiologists, critical care physicians, hospitalists, internists, family practitioners, physician assistants, cardiac care nurses, residents and medical students. The text assumes a basic clinical understanding of electrocardiograms and common terminology, and focuses on outlining the essentials of ECG interpretation and how they may be used to accurately diagnose AMI, as well as to facilitate appropriate and timely reperfusion therapy. In this manual, reperfusion therapy includes the use of thrombolytics and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), including angioplasty and stent placement.
The authors utilize a well-organized format of concisely written text with key points highlighted and numerous clinical and electrocardiographic demonstrations included in every chapter in order to illustrate core concepts, and allow for quick reference. The text is divided into six sections for rapid review and easy access: General Issues of ECG Morphologies and the Diagnosis of AMI; the ECG Morphologies of AMI broken down by anatomic distribution (i.e. anterior MI, Inferior MI, etc.); Conditions that can obscure the diagnosis of AMI, including ECG pseudo-infarction patterns and AMI look-alikes; Other issues including atypical presentations, biomarkers and echocardiography as used in the reperfusion decision; and the management of AMI.
The ECG in Acute MI includes more than 300 12-lead ECGs, over 200 of which have accompanying case histories to help the reader understand the ECG in a clinical context. Many of the case examples include angiographic findings that serve to cement the reader's understanding of the ECG manifestations of anatomical disease. The chapters and representative example cases are cross-referenced extraordinarily well, facilitating review and comparison in an emergency setting. In addition, each chapter contains an extensive annotated bibliography outlining the pertinent studies previously published, including interpreted methods, findings and comments. The value of including a detailed description of the evidence based literature on which assertions in the text are made, cannot be overstated. Overall, there are more than 500 cited references for the text.
The ECG in Acute MI is well organized, thorough and an easy to use manual, both for the seasoned physician and the clinician in training. Although a manual focusing only on ECG interpretation seems a bit daunting at over 300 pages, the concise format of the text makes reading or reviewing chapters either to refresh prior knowledge or verify findings of an acute ECG in the clinical setting to confirm an interpretation entirely possible. While the reviewer had been comfortable with her ability to interpret ECG's in the acute setting, she was pleasantly surprised at just how much she learned from this manual. The authors set out to review and highlight the key aspects of ECG interpretation in order to more accurately diagnose acute MI and facilitate appropriate and timely therapy. The authors focus on educating the reader on the more sophisticated interpretation of subtle, non-diagnostic and atypical electrocardiographic findings of infarction, beyond the much more easily recognized "tombstoning" pattern of AMI. Additionally, the case based discussion utilizing serial ECG's emphasizes the dynamic nature of the electrocardiogram in acute myocardial infarction. This has led the reviewer to be much more suspicious of subtle hints on an initial ECG and the value of repeated examination in the acute clinical setting. The drawback of a text focused on subtle and atypical ECG findings is that the manual is occasionally tedious in its' detail and tiresome in its' description of differentiating characteristics of subtleties.
Although there are several excellent manuals for ECG interpretation available in the medical literature, the ECG in Acute MI is superior in its utilization of clinical correlation and evidenced based theory. The ECG in acute MI would be an excellent addition to any emergency department library, and would easily lend itself to the development of an advanced ECG interpretation module for residency curriculum. The authors have added a unique and tremendously valuable resource to the reference texts available to practicing clinicians.
