An excellent handbook for people with psoriasis ...
This is a small handbook for psoriasis patients, using language that any high school graduate can understand. Numerous illustrations and case summaries help explain what psoriasis is, how it is triggered, and how it can be treated. Each chapter concludes with a list of "Facts to Remember" that highlights do1s and dont1s for the patient. Especially notable is the concluding chapter, "It's Up To You," which encourages the reader to take a pro-active role in controlling the disease. Also notable is the chapter on "Total Care," which emphasizes the importance of each patient1s general health and lifestyle as they relate to his or her psoriasis. As one who has struggled with psoriasis for 35 years, I am especially glad to have so much valuable information summarized in one small book. Even more important, I believe, is the overall message: that we patients are capable of understanding the basics of psoriasis, and with optimism and persistance, can do a great deal to help ourselves. Dermatologists should present this book to every psoriasis patient over 12 years of age, especially in this era of managed care. Three minutes with the doctor and another prescription simply cannot provide the information and encouragement that are so important to psoriasis patients.

This book is your 1 dose prescription to your all your ?'s
This book is wonderful. It has a great layout for each herb it reviews. It goes step-by-step telling history, traditional uses, proven effects, concerns and warnings, and even if the herb will effect the results of a drug test. All the above qualities and a also a colored picture of what the herb looks like. Also, a great book like this is "Medicine of the Earth," by Susanne Fischer-Rizzi that includes a few herbs this book overlooks.

Booklist: "Author Speaks Wisely..."
Psoriasis is an unpleasant, disfiguring disease, whose sufferers often hide away from life or are pushed away. Its cause is unknown, and there is no cure. It can affect people of all ages, and sufferers can die from the disease or the complications of treatment. Cram has long dealt with psoriasis patients and understands current knowledge of it and how patients and others react to it.

Stress doesn't cause it, yet reducing stress often can help in managing it, and psychological scars are usually the main problem associated with it. Cram speaks wisely about those matters, drawing on stores of his patients to show how such scars may affect all aspects of life and how they can be handled effectively.

Many HMOs will not pay for adequate care, so Cram's advice on finding a doctor is important. In addition, he describes various treatment methods, speaking especially well of psoriasis day-care centers. Self-acceptance is the major goal, he says. -William Beatty--Booklist, Sept. 15, 2000

Well needed information
I happened to find this book when my then 19 year old son was facing heart surgery for aeortic valve replacement. I knew that he would be on coumadin for the rest of his life. It was after his surgery that I sought out the Coumadin Cookbook not only to educate myself but also to educate my son. Rene Desmarais' book is extensive on detail not only on the role of coumadin in the blood but what food items work like coumadin or counteract coumadin. Her recipes are based on keeping the blood thinning reaction of the coumadin at an even keel. This book is so very important for anyone who is taking coumadin and it is a book that is one of its kind. While there are hundreds of diabetes cookbooks, the Coumadin Cookbook is one of its kind. My only slight dismay is that the photos in the book are only of senior citizens which makes it a bit of a hard sell for the younger generation.

Anorexia Unveiled
My granddaughter is suffering from anorexia, an eating disorder that afflicts many young women and older female teans. The disorder is baffling because the lay person just cannot see any logic or reason for it. The normal reaction of the lay person is to simply try to browbeat, shame or otherwise impose "common sense" upon the afflicted person. I and her extended family who loved and cared about this beautiful, Christian young woman needed to know how to help her.

A compassionate, caring Christian woman, lent me Dr. Raymond Vath's book, "Counseling Those With Eating Disorders" to read. His book pulls back the curtain of illogic and provides the reader with an explanation of the type of personality that seems to be most likely to be subject to the disorder, a discussion of the usual symptoms, and the probable causes for the onset of the disorder. It also suggests the approaches which are most effective in helping recovery to occur.

Dr. Vath, who is a Psychiatrist, approaches the counseling of eating disorders from the perspective of a strong, working faith in the principles of Christian teaching. He speaks from a position of having counseled over a hundred patients in their recovery from anorexia.

His book also deals in a lesser extent with bulemia, especially as it sometimes may be an adjunct of the recovering anorexic.

Dr. Vath's book is very readable and insightful. I would recommend it for any person who has any family member or close acquaintance with the disorder.

It is also a fairly short, small book (about 214 pages) and should be useful from both a professional viewpoint as well as for anyone else seeking knowledge of the subject.

Country Walks Near Baltimore

Excellent source for the urban outdoor enthusiast
This book takes you to outdoor areas mostly within thirty minutes drive from downtown Baltimore. If you just need a breath of fresh air and a walk in the country to boost you up, this one is for you. This book is a great find for those Baltimorans who have lived here forever and never knew about these places. It is also great for all those newly transplanted to Baltimore. Mr. Fisher gives detailed descriptions of the areas and interesting historical tidbits. He knows his stuff. However, as he admits, the areas he describes are constantly changing. They are parks that are being renovated, adding new facilities, etc. ONe of our favorites is North Point State Park. If it weren't for this book, we would have never found it.
