Cardiac Pacing for the Clinician
The book holds nearly 500 pages and the text is supported by plenty of usefull illustrations and tables. It covers pacing therapy and the indications for internal defibrillators. Although the space is limited you will find a good discussion of details such as venous access, the various causes of cardiac syncope and the clinical trials on ICD therapy. The text often gives a historic perspective on the use of leads and generators and it is generally well written. It can be recommended for the clinical cardiologist who is not specially trained in electrophysiology but who needs a better understanding of modern pacing therapy. It is always a problem to buy books on a subject that changes so very fast. But if you need a survey this is the best way to do it. This book deserves to be read accordingly. It is a very nice book.

One of the better Pearls Series books
This was well-written, concise, well-referenced, and contained practical as well as rare cardiology cases. EKGs, echo results, and other studies are included where relevent, and the discussions are brief yet thorough. It was a nice companion to my 4th year clinical cardiology clerkship.

The parts I read were exceptional
I am an M.D. but not a cardiologist. I looked at this book for a very specific purpose. I wanted to learn about nutrients as adjunctive therapies in heart disease. My interest in this topic arose because a family member, who has CHF, is not getting adequate relief from his medical regimen. This text is clearly not a nutritional or alternative work; it is very mainstream and the vast majority of the text is devoted to usual pharmacotherapeutic topics. But unlike almost any other book I saw, this one devoted short, hightly focused, and serious review coverage to cardioactive nutrients like L-carnitine, fish oils, taurine, and coenzyme Q-10.

The parts I read were well written and well thought out. I also glanced through the rest of the book and it appears to be a text that the authors worked dilligently to make into something truly exceptional--not just a bunch of review articles thrown together. The entire book seemed to be nicely conceptualized and nicely laid out.

The truth is, I almost bought the book just out of interest, even though I do not practice and therefore had no direct need for it. My guess is that clinicians and fellows, especially cardiologists but probably also internists, and perhaps critical care specialists and some others as well, might find this a very interesting and helpful addition to their personal reference library.

As for the nutrients discussed in the book, I had previously done extensive literature searches in MEDLINE and came away impressed by the body of evidence suggesting that these may be helpful in many cases and harmful in practically none. After exploring the issue, I was frankly amazed that some of these nutrients are not more widely used as adjunctive therapies in many cardiovascular conditions. The evidence for efficacy is in many cases not yet unequivocal, but the safety is generally so high, and the cost so low, and the evidence for efficacy is in many cases quite suggestive and impressive. Given this, I suspect that a reasonable analysis of potential costs, risk, and benefits would, in many cases, come down in favor of supplementing traditional therapies with nutritional therapeutic agents.

But I digress. I certainly don't want to leave readers of this review with the impression that this is a flakey or lightweight book; it is not. The coverage devoted to the topics I mention is impressive but short, and the main focus is elsewhere.

excellent for Medical Students.
Currently, I am a Neurology resident. I found those 27 cases, very well written and informative. The authors succeeded in guiding the reader to think about where is the lesion first, with helpful pictures and diagrams, then briefly touch on the disease and basic management. I believe every one going to a neurology rotation, or even a resident will find those 27 cases a great way to refresh his/her basic neurosciences, and best of all it is a very easy to memorize book.

It is needless to say that the book is marvelous.
In the chapter on tuberculosis and other mycobacterial diseaes starting on page 1094 chapter 35. In page 1095 it is quoted from reference 12 by Sidiqi et al published in 1984 in the Am Rev Respir Dis, that mycobacterium TB is not inhibted by NAP. I might be wrong, but I think the original paper by Sidiqi mentions the reverse, i.e., NAP inhibits the growth of mycobacterium TB. Please for your comment. Thanks

A real masterpiece
Cecil's textbook of medicine has been my favorite internal medicine textbook since my student years, back in 1991. The newest edition (22) features major changes to the book layout, which is very productive and makes reading, studying and even referencing it very functional.

The new edition features more colours than the previous ones, which are used as text "hyperlinks", referring the reader to other chapters and to online contents. The diagnostic criteria for a specific disease and the treatment are included into specific tables, characteristic of the Cecil textbook. This makes it even easier for the student to memorise and understand!

The new e-dition, includes a bonus cd-rom, which includes all the pics and tables of the textbook. They can be searched, categorised and even exported for powerpoint presentations. Excellent!

Furthermore, the reader gets FREE access to the online version of Cecil, at www.cecilmedicine.com At the website, new discoveries in medicine are included wthi highlighted text into the textbook, therefore the book is constantly updated to the latest medical discoveries and trends. You get to have access to your beloved textbook from any place in the world, without the need of carrying it with you.

In short, the new e-dition of Cecil, is a must for medical students, residents and fellows! Look no further, the best medical reference textbook is here.
