The Battle of Antietam (Battles of the Civil War)
Published in Hardcover by Lucent Books (August, 1996)
Author: James P. Reger
Amazon base price: $31.20
Average review score:

A vivid narrative of the heart and mind of the civil war.
Reger's "Antietam" vividly chronicles the events leading up to, and including the battle and aftermath of the "bloodiest battle" of the civil war. various other aspects of the era are discussed by the author. Reger writes in a an easy-flowing, yet detailed and descriptive manner. As a secondary school U.S History teacher I've found this and other books from Jim Reger-and others like him-to be extremely helpful in attracting students to "historical" text. This refreshingly new type of historical narrative is welcome, enjoyable reading to the young and adult student of history.

A great way to learn about the Civil War
This is a genuinely fun way to learn about the Civil War while touring a beautiful section of Atlanta. It's especially nice on a Sunday morning when there is little traffic and you have time to really stop and listen to certain stories or look at certain places. The contrast between the sometimes gory narrative and the peaceful beauty of contemporary Atlanta is fascinating and makes you think about how it must have been over a hundred years ago when war ravaged the city and the country. Very strange and very stimulating. Also, the last stop is a great place for a picnic and a chance to walk around and stretch and think about everything the author of the tape has told you. Really great and definitely recommend it for yourself and your family.

Battle Wounds of Iwo Jima

Clearly detailed and unforgettable
Dr. Thomas Brown's Battle Wounds Of Iwo Jima is a vividly written, highly recommended, eye-witness description of the ferocious and horrific World War II battles for the island of Iwo Jima against the occupying Japanese forces, and told from the viewpoint of the medics. A clearly detailed and unforgettable description of bloodshed and immense casualties, Battle Wounds Of Iwo Jima is a welcome contribution to the growing library of World War II battlefield accounts. Dr. Brown writes with an especially authority based on his having served as a battalion surgeon in the Central Pacific Theater battle for Iwo Jima for which he was cited with the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service, as well as a Purple Heart Medal.

One of the Best on Chesapeake Bay Lighthouses
This is an excellent book on the existing lighthouses of the Chesapeake Bay, and a must-have for anyone interested in lighthouses.

A chapter is dedicated to each of the remaining lighthouses of the bay, and is teaming with historical facts surrounding the lighthouse in question. Along with wonderful, large color photographs of the lights as they presently exist, many chapters include additional black and white prints of the lighthouses in earlier days.

The introduction is very good and gives a nice overview of the lighthouses and their history in the Chesapeake Bay, and sets the stage for what follows in the book. A general map of the Chesapeake Bay showing the location of each of the lights is also included.

The text is very informative about each lighthouse covered, right down to the dollars spent on each light, the approval process for those monies, construction, light keepers, daily life at a lighthouse...and in some cases, the move of a lighthouse to another location in order to save the light from destruction or for posterity. Other facts are discussed as well, many unique in nature. Did you know that nuclear power was once used in a lighthouse? It was, and in the Chesapeake Bay.

A framed section with identification information on each lighthouse is also included in each chapter, detailing such items as date of establishment, lighthouse position, light characteristic, height, range, etc.

All in all, I don't think you could ask for more in a perfect book on Chesapeake Bay lighthouses. This book will make any "wickie" very happy.

Loving, rounded, view of a complex ecological issue
"Bay Country" does justice to the many legitimate claims on the Chesapeake Bay. Horton loves the bay, its grasses, oysters, crabs, and rockfish; the watermen who live off it and exploit it, and the ways of life and physical artifacts -- bridges, old roads, cabins -- people have built around it. He also knows its lovers, including him, are killing it. He portrays the bay and its life, its tributaries(including a wonderful essey on how hard it is to wring every last pollutant from sewer water) the watermen, their traditional (and tight) communities, and the hard life they make from its resources. He has chapters on wind and energy use by people and animals. Horton poetically evokes the bay's charms, in a book that is part nature writing, part sociology, part ecological economy, and part a gloss on Pogo's famous remark, "We have met the enemy and he is us." Not a particularly hopeful book, but a very realistic one, fair to all sides and to the glorious bay itself.

Heaven on earth: Bay Ridge on the Chesapeake
Bay Ridge is located at Tolly Point, where the Chesapeake meets the Severn. The authors captured the flavor of this unique waterfront community from when it was a haven for victorian vactioners arriving by steamboat and rail to the present day year round community! Beyond the average "coffee table" book.

What a gem of a book!
An entire ecosystem is revealed in this work; a look inside a true "natural wonder", the Chesapeake Bay. I picked up this nature/local interest book at a small store on Smith Island, Maryland, and began reading it on the boat trip back to Crisfield. I found "The Bay" to be a surprising page-turner -- along with detailed descriptions of the life cycles of familiar wildlife such as ospreys, eagles and great blue herons, and the ubiquitous Maryland blue crabs and jellyfish, there are facets of bay life in this book which I'd never even considered -- sea creatures that light up with natural phosphorescence, animals that regress as they develop from infancy to adulthood, and one beautifully descriptive chapter entitled "The Chesapeake Marshes" which came alive as I read it! I loved this book! One need not be a scientist nor a naturalist to appreciate this superbly written tribute to one of the most beautiful places on earth. The final chapter, "Compensation", clearly illustrates the symbiotic relationships of living creatures within an ecosystem and their interdependence upon one another for the continuation of life, not only in the Chesapeake Bay region, but as a representation of life systems everywhere. The writing was spellbinding; Mr. Klingel wrote so well that I found myself reading on and on for the sheer pleasure of experiencing his words. Although "The Bay" was written nearly 50 years ago, its story is as timeless as the nature it so aptly describes.

Towards a Safer Society
Having just come from a conference given by Dr. Bloom I can whole heartedly say that this is one book every counselor, teacher, youth worker or simply anyone interested in bettering society should read. I have found the techniques presented here exceedingly helpful to my own work as a counselor/advocate of youth. Truama theory is a fascinating way to address what is really happening to people I see every day. The perspectives presented in this book, if heeded, just may help us down the path towards a safer society we so deperately need to go in the world and the U.S. more directly. Please, read this book and also Creating Sanctuary by Dr. Bloom and watch as your thoughts expand to see the world through the eyes of the victim.

Helpful to anyone who has been in therapy.
The messages this book delivers are at first preachy, but then it gives you the option to skip to Chapter Five, where it starts instructing the reader to retrain the thinking that leads to dysthymic/depressive episodes. It's a cognitive behavioral approach that does begin the path to a more sound daily life. As soon as I read it, I wrote my therapist and told her that her messages to me about my dysthymia diagnosis strongly resonate throughout the book starting with Chapter 5. Have high expectations when you begin to pursue this book's method.

Beautiful Eyes: Consumer Guide to Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery
This book is a must read for any one considering having plastic surgery to improve droopy eyelids. The before and after pictures are great and the text itself provides indispensible information for the any question from pre surgical preparation to recovery time. Most importantly, I learned that there are surgeons, trained as ophthalmologists that preform only eyelid surgery.
