An inspiring collection
In the past, Dr. Diamond has on the whole confined himself to one major area of interest in each of his books. In the Life Energy in Music series he focuses on various aspects of music, The Healer: Heart and Hearth is concerned mainly with the role of the therapist or healer, Re-Mothering and its Experience examines the importance of our relationships with our mothers, and so on. In Facets of a Diamond, however, Dr. Diamond draws together all the aspects of his life and the experiences that make him the therapist that he is. But, more than being just an auto-biography, this book introduces us to the possibility that we are all therapists, whatever our profession or station in life. After reading this book I felt inspired to consider how my choices and decisions are determining the pattern of my own life, and how I can best develop and manifest my own philosophy day by day.

I think that this is one of the most remarkable traits of Dr. Diamond's writing: that, instead of claiming to have found the one true path to enlightenment, he presents his own ideas and thought in such a way as to be a springboard for the reader's.

Multifaceted indeed.
Dr. Diamond has written a book which covers a wide range of the areas to which he has turned his attention over many years. His work is indeed multifaceted and beneficial to both specialist readers from a range of disciplines as well as the general reader looking for further insight into his/her life. One of the most intriguing aspects of Dr. Diamond's writing is his focus on how insights and information are presented. His intention is to make the writing itself therapeutic and this intention, and its effect on the individual, is obvious and immediate as one dips into this book. Dr. Diamond writes with intensity and enthusaism as well as humour and compassion. This is truly a book which approaches healing and health holistically and with real concern for the sufferings, physical or psychological, more or less obvious, of others.

A treasure trove of inspiration
I find this book a great inspiration - worth returning to repeatedly to stimulate my thoughts and uplift my spirit. It is as truly "multi-faceted" as its title implies - a reflection of the many-faceted author, Dr. John Diamond. In it, I find parts that apply to my personal, professional, artistic and inner lives. I can open it to any section and find a gem - and then I find myself engrossed by the wonderful stories, quotations, poems and aphorisms. It is full of humor and heart. I highly recommend it.

Still the best!
The 9th edition (which is being shown on the screen right now as of November 17), is still the best guidebook to NJ around. Published in 2000, it is more up-to-date than many others, and still shows plenty of personal opinions as well as the basic facts. Available mostly thru "used-like new" option on Amazon because the publisher is out of stock of new copies, but has plenty of books that were a tiny-bit bent when shipped in cartons or shipped back from stores that went out of business.

This is not the latest edition
Although the 8th edition is a great book, it was published in 1998. The most recent edition available at this time (10/2003) is the 9th edition published in 2000. It's ASIN number is 0960776281. That is about the only way to get to it since Amazon.com refuses to put up the 9th edition first on the page although I have asked them to many times. You can buy "used-like new" that are actually new, unread copies that have come back from bookstores as returns, or had slightly dented covers are were never sent out. Thanks a lot, Barbara Hudgins

Get the 9th edition
Those of you looking for the latest edition of New Jersey Day Trips may be having a hard time, thanks to Amazon's crazy automatic system. They presently have an older edition on the top line, with no indication of what edition it is. If you want to buy a "used, like new" copy of the 9th edition, type in the ASIN number in the little rectangular box on the amazon front page. That will take you to the correct 9th edition. The number is 0960776281. The 9th edition was published in 2000 and is the most recent. The 10th edition will not be out until spring, 2004.
Thanks, Barbara Hudgins, author.

Helped me get through some medical situations
This book was very informative especially as regards the reason why some doctors have so many sample meds to give to patients and go to so many seminars in really nice places. I had wondered about this issue for some time.

It also helped me deal with six different doctors this year. The title drew me to the book as I was having a number of difficulties dealing with these doctors as well as all of the tests that were being ordered.

I only wish I would have had this book to read in January. Better late than never. I have suggested this book to several friends.

DOCTORS OR CROOKS, CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE ?
A MUST READ

This is a fabulous (and scarey) disertation of the behind the scenes of the medical profession. I cannot believe the things the author tells us about surgeons, mortality statistics, stupid doctors misdiagnosis, hospital negligence and, plain old deceit of the doctors who we trust. It is shameful and a pure travesty of deception that everyone should read about. Before you get your next surgery, you must buy this book and be prepared for important questions to ask your future doctor or surgeon. I was especially troubled by the ambivalence of top cardio surgeons not treating patients for fear that there mortality statistics(death stats) would look worse if they loose a patient on the operating table. That is not medicine, it is business. WHAT are we paying these high paid liars for ?

A MUST READ

Dr. Levine's expose` really opened my eyes !
His book is fascinating from start to finish. It exposes incompetent, sneaky, greedy, dangerous, and downright illegal practices; It shows how things should be run for the health, safety, and well-being of mankind; how greed and power have corrupted some people and companies at the expense of innocent victims; and how Dr. Levine's integrity and outrage drove him to expose it all.

Chesapeake Bay Cooking

If you think Chesapeake Bay cooking is all about the hard- or soft-shelled blue crab--about crab cakes, deviled crab, crab soufflés, crab-stuffed mushroom caps, ham and crab imperial, crabmeat curry, crab fluffs, crab and artichoke dip, crab loaf, crab quiche, and soft-shell crab sandwiches--you have another think coming. This isn't to say that the first 60 or so pages of Chesapeake Bay Cooking aren't dedicated to the blue crab. They are. But then John Shields moves right into oysters, then seafood, soups and stews, chicken and game birds, meat and game, and on all the way to desserts, pickles, and preserves.

Companion to a public television series, Chesapeake Bay Cooking is part travelogue, part history of a region's cooking, part call to environmentalist arms, part paean to childhood past, and part plain old cookbook devoted to the food products and cooking styles indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay.

In one sense, this is what has become of American cooking from the earliest times (Jamestown) to the most recent. Everyone passing through has had an impact on what the Native Americans started. Recipes range from Baltimore Polish and Italian influences to Virginia African American. While some professional chefs of the region are represented, the food for the most part is what's to be found at home, in the back yard, in the church basement. John Shields, Chesapeake Bay homeboy, gives this valuable piece of American real estate both a face and a flavor. --Schuyler Ingle

Grab a Cold One and Get Ready for the Best on the Shore!
I watched the PBS show that this book originated from and immediately ordered the book. I already own over fifty cookbooks and this has become my favorite. As a native "Baltimoron", I've thoroughly enjoyed the stories and info about Baltimore. The recipes are fabulous. You must try a "Dirty Gertie". Fantastic. These recipes are the best that Maryland has to offer. John, hats off to you! Living in Ocean City, we can sample the best seafood in the world. Now, my kitchen is the best in town. Thanks.

I love this cookbook!
I ended my search for the perfect crabcake recipe with this cookbook! His crabcakes are wonderful, the best ever. And the rest of the recipes and narratives in this book are delicious and entertaining, Shields provides an inviting glimpse into the Chesapeake culture and cuisine. Makes me want to visit the area someday.

Five stars from the Crabcake Queen!!!
This book was a Christmas gift from my husband, and it has to be one of my all-time favorite cookbooks. I thought I knew a lot about this region's cooking, but I learned a great deal from this book. The recipes for Baked Squash & Tomatoes and Oyster Stew have become standbys in my kitchen. Not only is this book full of fabulous recipes, but the stories woven through the book are worth reading just on their own. John Shields is truly a "Bawlamor boy" and one of the state's greatest assets. Highly recommended!

Best Cancer Resource Book
It is a wealth of information - that every person diagnosed with any type of cancer can benefit from. Having had 2 bouts with breast cancer, I have bought many books. This one is the best resource book I have found. I have loaned it out many times and everyone is thankful for the information.

It is written in an easy style, such that an average person can understand the language. It presents many questions for the patient & family to ask doctors, along with the many options available.

I highly recommend this for anyone who needs any type of information about cancer and it's treatments.

Recommended by oncology nurses!
This book is a one stop guide to so many things involving therapies that it is hard to know where to start. Cancer nurses feel this is the best consumer book out there. Information is in plain English, simple terms, with lots of illustrations. Tons of referrals to agencies that may be helpful.

I wish I had had the book sooner.
Half way through my chemo treatments, my doctor's office recieved three copies of this book. I borrowed one. I was very impressed with the layout, the data covered, questions answered. This is a very thought out book. I figured I would have it returned to the office by Christmas (three months away) but I was halfway through the first weekend. I highly recommend this book. It is interesting and EASY reading. I like knowing the information that can save my life, now and down the road.

Healthy Advise
Thanks! Dr. Kim! Wonderful book. Easy to read and great coverage of a woman's transitions!

Great book!
This book is exceptionally well written. The authors have taken complex topics and have explained them in down-to-earth terms. Any woman going through this adventure can find herself on these pages and understand what and why things are happening as they are.

The Book for Ladies in Menopause
I highly recomend this book, Healthy Transitions, by Dr. Edmund S. Kim. I shared this book with my other church friends and advocate it to all women. I especially enjoyed the section on What's With My Moods? Ch. 4 in the book.

Detailed yet practical
I have used this book both for Dermatology class, in my dermatology rotation and in other rotations. It is a great resourse to just look up information. It has great pictures and is easy to sit and read and understand.

I can say I have definately gotten my money out of this book.

A must have for the primary care provider...
...for it is easy to use, written very clearly and it has wonderful pictures.
From the moment it was recommeded to me as a student to now, I have used it just about everyday.
Just as an example, Habif has a wonderful chapter on Acne that allows the primary care provider to manage this condition from its mildest to the more complicated forms. He describes the condition and the treatment options giving us a great resource for care.

Simply the best
This book receives a rating of five stars. It is clearly written, easy to understand, comprehensive, and contains practical information accompanied by hundreds of clear color photographs. This book is very helpful to me in my practice and I refer to it often. It really is a standard of excellence. I can't recommend the book more highly.

Disappointment
If you have had only one miscarriage and just want a good biology lesson on the different ways miscarriage can occur, this book may be for you. However, I do not recommend this book to anyone who has suffered two or more miscarriages and is seeking advice on what to do about it. After my second, my main concern was trying to at least have an educated guess as to whether they were caused by chromosomal abnormalities or some other cause which potentially needs to be treated before trying again. This book did not give me the answers I was looking for and instead left me more frustrated and confused than ever. Additionally, after reading several books and every article I could find on miscarriage in magazines and on the internet, it seems to me that many of Dr. Lerner's opinions are in the minority. He flatly recommends that women not seek testing until they have suffered three losses in a row. However, many doctors and the American College of Obstetritians and Gynecologists (ACOG) now recommend doing so after two, especially if the woman is in her 30's or 40's. I also do not think Dr. Lerner explained that there can be certain circumstances of your pregnancy and first trimester miscarriage that point to the likelihood that it was not chromosomal abnormality - I had to learn this from other sources (examples are occurring later in the trimester and normal fetus and hearbeat shown on ultrasound before miscarrying). He also flatly says that stress does not cause miscarriages because he has seen no study proving this to his satisfaction (he uses this reasoning for a lot of his opinions but does not explain how difficult it is to prove anything in this area). I have read of numerous studies (and also acknowledged by the ACOG) that indicate that stress can in fact cause or at least contribute to miscarriage. After seeing so much information that contradicts many of Dr. Lerner's opinions, I just don't have much confidence in what he has to say. Another fault I find is that while he acknowledges progesterone deficiency can cause early miscarriages, he is against the use of progesterone supplements but does not address whether he thinks there is a possible solution for this problem, again leaving me frustrated.

My recommendation is that if you read this book, at least don't stop there - read everything you can about miscarriages from reputable sources and don't take this doctor's word as the gospel. While there doesn't seem to be any complete certainty in this subject area, by becoming as informed as possible and using your own common sense you can figure out some of the answers you need in order to go on.

IF YOU NEED A BOOK ON MISCARRIAGE..THIS IS THE ONE!!
Books on miscarriage by in large are very difficult to read because it is hard to get past the pain of why you are reading them. This book is an exception. It is the only book I have read on the topic which actually put me at ease, was reassuring, compassionate and very informative. It is clear that Dr. Lerner cares about his reader through his intelligent communication of medical information with great sensitivity to the topic and his reader.
If you need to read a book on this topic then you need to read this one. It's all you will need!

Honest and straightforward
I found this book to be honest and straightforward. The author takes onership of what his perspective while still telling you both sides of the options and issues. He explains when issues are controversial and doesn't presume to know all the answers, just wants to help you understand and be educated. I wish there were a bit more than the first chapter on the process of the miscarriage itself. But I think that is true of most books on miscarriage. The first chapter is helpful to understand what a woman goes through in having amiscarriage. This book is more about what might have happened and how to prevent it.

Medical Student, MSIII
Greatest heart pathophysiology book I have found. The book gives you a firm grasp of heart physiology and uses that to build your clinical and pathophysiology of disease knowledge. And, it's brief. If you don't have time for Braunwald's this is the next best thing. I'll never get rid of it.

A must read book
Written by experts and new graduates it is very helpful. Every aspect of Heart diseases is explained. I enjoyed a lot explanations of ECG forms and reasons behind it. Unlike those books that says if you see such and such shape you have this or that. Every pathophysiology of hearth diseases is clearly explanied with simple explanations. Book does not say much about performance of the heart muscle as you probably have seen in physiology books but practical understanding is plentiful.

Excellent for medical students
This book is the best cardiology text I have ever encountered for me (a medical student) to learn cardiac physiology and therapy as well as pathophysiology. I referred to it during all four years of medical school, and, now that I'm graduating and selling most of my preclinical books, it's one of only three that I'm not selling.

I thought it was a 5-star, but then I read the second bok!
If I hadn't been too lazy to review _Sing It To Her Bones_ when I first read it, I would have given it 5 stars. I loved the fact that it was really a book about people and relationships and that the mystery just fell into the rest of the book. I particularly enjoyed the complications of Hannah's relationship with her husband, and all the intricacies of her role as mother. So I thought the book was very readable, and couldn't wait to pass it on to my mother (my mom is Hannah's age; I'm Hannah's daughter's age).

But then I read Marcia Talley's second Hannah Ives book, _Unbreathed Memories_. It blows _Sing It To Her Bones_ out of the water. Since she doesn't have to start at the beginning with Hannah's history, Talley has more room for plot, and the story is much more interesting. I stayed up all night reading it and couldn't turn pages fast enough.

If you're wavering about buying this book, BUY IT! But you should also buy the second one, _Unbreathed Memories_, because you shouldn't miss it either. I wonder when the third Hannah Ives is coming out?

A winner
Marcia Talley was the winner of the 1998 Malice Domestic Grant.

I am certain when you open the cover and read the excerpt titled, Swan Song, you will instantly take a liking to Hannah Ives. She comes across as an honest, witty, and courageous character.

After surviving surgery and treatment for breast cancer, and a job lay-off, Hannah goes to stay with her sister-in-law, Connie, at the family farm near Pearson's Corner, an old fishing community on the Truxton River in Southern Maryland. While there she discovers a body in a well. Being the person she is, Hannah feels since she is the one who discovered the body, she has an obligation to the victim to solve the murder. This is one obligation that leads her and Connie in to some dangerous waters....

Marcia Talley is coming out of the chute strong with her first mystery. I understand this is to be a series and I'm glad to hear it. I'd like to see more about her husband, daughter and son-in-law. IMHO, Hannah Ives is going to be one of our favorite protagonists and Marcia Talley will be one of our most talked about writers.

Excellent
Sing It To Her Bones was an excellent mystery. I couldn't put the book down once I started reading, the pace is fast and one is never bored. It is a great book for an airplane flight for the hours do fly when reading an intense mystery such as Sing It To Her Bones.
