THAT'S MY FATHER!!!
I first read the book when I was four. I am now, at the age of ninteen, a fully qualified obstrician/gynecologist, all because of this book. I have now, of course, read this several times, but it is still like reading it for the first time. As the title implies, my father is David Olive, the editor of this book. I fully recommend this book to anyone who is remotely interested in a profession as a gynecologist.

Your medical library is not complete without this book!
A comprehensive book, essential to every Ob-Gyn resident or clinician. Takes you from the basics of anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive tract to the management of complicated gynecologic conditions.

Operative Obstetrics Treasure
This book is simply fantastic. For the practicing obstetrician, it encompasses almost all the issues dealing with the specialty, concerning operative techniques. For the student, there is a lot of new approaches to subjects that other books do not show. For example, there's an entire chapter on symphysiotomy, another on external cephalic version, both subjects very rarely seen in such depth in common textbooks. There's also a very good chapter on surgical basics, dealing with needles, sutures and knots. In short, i recommend this book for those who truly love Obstetrics' practice.

Dr. Hankins is a very intelligent man.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Hankins in person and want to express my sincere thoughts. Dr. Hankins is a gifted surgeon and very intelligent man.He has compassion, as well as talent.I recommend his professional expertise. Cheryle Anderson

A Real Eye Rescue
This kit has saved me many evenings of eye strain. I am a dollhouse and miniature enthusiast who works and makes items that in the scale of 1 foot equals 1 inch. Working with items that are that small in size eye strain is a sure thing. The Eye Rescue kit has reduced my severe headaches and visual stess due to eye strain. The supplements in the kit improve eye circulation and the vision exercises included on audio tape have been a real eye rescue.

Proven Power
Sitting infront of my computer for several hours a day and reviewing lengthly proposals, eye strain and computer vision fatique were inevitable. My optomotrist's unexceptable answer was not to use my computer so much! Searching for help I found The Original Eye Rescue Kit and what a difference it has made in my daily life. This kit including Meir Schneider's audio tape of eye exercises to strengthen your eyes, "Vision Saver" nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedy "Ruta" and eye drops are terrific! The informational brochure explains how and why everything works. Now my whole office uses this kit. This is a must for anyone who puts in long hours in front of the computer! It is truly amazing how much better all of our eyes feel at the end of the day!

Outpatient Management of HIV Infection
This is a tour de force book on an extremely complex topic. Dr. Masci has managed to include something for everyone here. The new practitioner can use it for a guideline of good practice while the experienced practitioner can relate to the author's extensive experience and research. In addition to core medical data, Masci has included information on assisting patients to live healthy lives. This book crosses disciplinary boundaries, making it useful for all healthcare practitioners who care for HIV/AIDS patients. Bravo, Dr. Masci!

Clear, concise, useful -- and sometimes eloquent
This manual is packed full of useful information for primary care doctors, nurses, social workers and others who care for people with HIV but aren't specialists themselves. The case studies (it includes a whole section of them) are a particularly vivid way of conveying not just facts about an illness but an approach toward dealing with the people who have it. Only one caveat: Like most books on HIV/AIDS, it needs to be updated with the latest on protease inhibitors. But it still contains a wealth of useful information, from epidemiology to psychological support.

this book was so good and the author was so smart too, she knew altituff about stuff like history andyster boats and twins and friendship and family brother-sister love, even though MY brother is really annoying and not so cool as the one in the book, I guess I love him, too, like the girl in the book

Oyster Moon
I thought that Oyster Moon is a great book because I had no idea that the people on the drudger boats could be so cruel. In fact, I had no idea about this whole topic. It is an educational book without the reader realizing it. I would reccomend Oyster Moon to any reader, young or old.

Painbuster by John Stamatos MD et al.
Painbuster is a good work for explaining alternative strategies
to manage chronic pain and discomfort. Physical therapy
assists in blocking pain. Ultrasound provides deep massage
to block and manage pain or maximize blood flow. The TENS unit
attacks pain in a similar manner as acupuncture. Epidural
space injections block pain via the use of Kenalog. Different
exercises help to manage pain and muscular rigidity.
Sitting and standing multiple times helps as an exercise.
Lying flat on the back and raising/lowering the abdomen
helps to establish spinal flexibility. Getting into a
crawling position and extending the leg upward is also a good
stretch. Certain foods and herbal preparations manage pain.
For instance, ginger, B6 and B12 vitamins, brocolli, garlic,
beans, tuna, salmon and omega 3 fats are helpful in crafting
an effective pain management and diet strategy to reinforce
the exercise regimen.

Painbusters WORKS
This book really helped me deal with my chronic back pain. I followed the easy steps and exercises, and have been pain-free for three weeks. (That's a record for me!) I never thought I would be able to go running again, but I completed a three mile run this morning.

Thank you Dr. Stamatos! I love you!

Comprehensive, up-to-date, practical guide.
Dr. Duvoisin and Dr. Sage have compiled an excellent guide that takes the reader from the basics of what Parkinson's disease is to the latest theories of the mechanisms of Parkinson's. It also goes ino great detail on the diffrent types of medications for the treatment of the disease. Included are exercise recomendations for the various stages and dietary considerations. This book is not just another Parkinson's disease book - it is a must for Care-giver and patient alike.

From an RN
This book is an informative guide to almost everything anyone would want to know about Parkinson's Disease. It has in depth information about diagnosis, meds, and a great amount of information on ways to manage this disease. The book was bought for a patient, but the nurses I work with all wanted a copy. In my opinion, the text is at a college reading level--it is not simplified, and readers not familiar with medical terms would want to keep a medical dictionary handy. It would make a very good resource for the patient with a high reading level and for members of the medical team who are looking for resources for patient education on Parkinson's Disease.

The Perspectives of Psychiatry

excellent for psych and non-psych majors
These perspectives have helped me to learn more about my patients and improve their overall treatment. The theories are laid out in a clear, understandable manor, so the non-psychiatrist may learn. P.S. Dr.McHugh is a gem!

A Masterful Coherent Synthesis of Psychiatry
The field of psychiatry may at first appear bewildering. People are complicated. The variety of ways in which thoughts, feelings, and behaviors can go awry are plentiful. The history of psychiatry has seen a number of attempts at reductionism in the face of this complexity, most notably that of the psychoanalytic school, the behaviorists, and the biological psychiatrists. These monolithic viewpoints have each distorted psychiatry, emphasizing some important features of mental life and its abnormalities while giving short shrift to others. Further the acrimony between adherents of these schools have left psychiatric trainees as well as the general public uncertain of what to believe about the nature of mental illness. In this book Drs. McHugh and Slavney have done a masterful job of making clear what we know in psychiatry and how we know it. Paul McHugh has been chairman of psychiatry at Johns Hopkins from 1977-2000; Phillip Slavney was director of residency training in the Hopkins psychiatry department for most of that time, and now directs consultation psychiatry there. Their book describes four perspectives of psychiatry, or ways of seeing disturbance of mental life, and shows how each is especially illuminating for particular types of psychiatric issues. The disease perspective is most useful for explaining major mental illnesses such as dementia, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. It is the most clearly biological, and invokes medications for treatment and laboratory methods for research. The life story perspective is most useful for a person who has suffered a setback and is demoralized. It emphasizes the uniqueness of each individual and the meaning that people's experiences have for them. The behavioral perspective concerns things people do that get them into trouble. Drug and alcohol abuse are the most common of these, but eating disorders and sexual disorders are included as well. Treatment in this perspective prioritizes stopping bad behaviors over understanding them. The dimensional perspective looks at the vulnerabilities that people have as a result of their lifelong traits. These vulnerabilities may arise out cognitive limitations or out of features of personality such as being impulsive or being a worrier. McHugh and Slavney draw on both their vast knowledge of the literature of psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience, and their long experience of evaluating and treating patients in order to make the case for their perspectival approach to the field. They succeed impressively, I think, for two reasons. One reason is that the approach is such an intelligent and sensible one. The other reason is that they have had the benefit of 15 years between the first edition of their book and this second edition. Major changes and additions were made between the two and the result is greater clarity, especially in the opening chapters, as well as a fuller discussion of themes that were only touched on in the original edition. For example, new chapters were written in the behavioral perspective section on suicide and on hysteria. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand where psychiatry stands today. But more than that, it is essential because it makes clear on what psychiatry stands, i.e. what sets of reasoning have gotten us where we are. With this clarity the path towards new insights and new discoveries becomes navigable. In short, this book is a gem.

Excellent self-assessment for med students & even physicians
I wish I bough this book when I was a med student. It's a comprehensive self-assessment review for med students and even physicians.

Features:
1. It has variety of MCQs (500) covering wide range of medical specialties.

2. Very informative explanations at the end of each chapter.

3. A bibliography that lists all the sources used in the book.

4. Most of the MCQs are case-oriented, thought you will find some factual questions like (All the following are present in Cushing syndrome EXCEPT).

5. The types of questions used are: Single-best-answer, matching, and one, two, neither, or both (which are often difficult).

6. No picture questions.

7. Contents include:
General appearance of disease, Head Eyes Ears Nose and Throat, CVS, Thorax, Abdomen, MSK, Genitourinary Dermatology, and Neurology.

8. It comes in 177 pages, published by McGraw Hill Text; 3rd ed (1998).

Excellent source
Excellent preparation for the NBME shelf subject test; the questions are of a similar level of difficulty. Few picky questions as compared to other pretest books. Lacks the high yield facts section of other books of the series.

A Physician's Guide to Pain and Symptom Management in Cancer Patients
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (April, 2000)
Author: Janet L., Md. Abrahm
Amazon base price: $21.96
List price: $24.95 (that's 12% off!)
Used price: $13.50
Average review score:

Wisdom is rarely so practical
Dr. Abrahm has written a book that is at once clinically sound and widely accessible. The premise is plain: "Suffering can be prevented or treated whenever it occurs, whether at diagnosis or during curative therapy, or if the cancer recurs."

In the chapters to follow, Dr. Abrahm makes good on this claim, not only by answering practical technical questions with skill, but also by including specific experiences and verbatim dialogue. Communicating with patients is no small part of helping them and their families.

The book contains basic information about common pain types and treatments. It also includes careful discussion of how to manage difficult pain syndromes and other symptoms of cancer.

Because the chapters are well-referenced, one quickly gains guidance beyond pharmacological symptoms and treatments. The inclusion of information about nonpharmacologic care; the importance of the care team (nurse, social worker, oncologist, pain specialist); and, finally the specifics about religious considerations, advance directives, and grief and bereavement give the book its true handbook value for clinicians.

If you are early in your medical career, or interested in understanding pain and other symptom management, or if you are trying to understand and help a loved one with cancer, this book is a wise investment.

The Best Approach to This Issue Ever
For years, doctors have focused on curing the objective aspects of illness or disease, but have ignored -- or downplayed -- the subjective aspects, principally pain. Society's hypersensitivity to the misuse of drugs has only made the problem worse. Finally, one of the country's leading oncologists takes the problem seriously. This book, although designed for clinicians, should be read by every person who must confront pain either in themselves or a friend or relative. Written clearly and compellingly, this book now becomes the authoritative source on this important and overlooked subject. Put another way, any physician who is not familiar with this book simply is not being fair to his or her patients and is not staying current on a central part of current medicine.
