From a surgeon's point of view
This book is been extremely helpful to patients and families who receive the news that they are facing treatment for breast cancer. The book is written in an easily understood manner but deals with most of the issues. It is an excellent book to give to our patients. It helps them answer their questions and the questions of their family members. It is very supportive of the counselling we give to our patients.

Extraordinarily easy-to-read must-have guide for patients
Not a lot of jargon. The most understandable resource available for non-medical personnel interested in learning about breast cancer. The question/answer format is perfect, as it allows the reader to guide herself through the information. And Dr. Hunter does not "dumb down" the information.

In summary, a must-buy for the newly-diagnosed patient, and a wonderful gift to any woman (with or without breast cancer).

This book provides up to date coverage of a complex and commonly misunderstood disease. It is easy to read and well organized, yet provides a great deal of detail. Suggestions for action as well as for further inquiry are provided.

This book covers all the ins and outs of a disease that is just as much a mystery now as it was years ago. This gives detailed information about what to expect in testing, physician's appointments, symptoms, different treatment options and how to cope with the fact that you have a chronic disease.

Lung cancer- a review
Pass' book is excellent, well-written, and comprehensive. It is one of the first books patients and family members should go to, though they should be cautioned that the book is written for a medical audience. Skip the first two chapters on mollecular biology which are far too technical, and go to some of the other chapters written in a detailed but comprehensive fashion. This book will prove exceptionally useful, but tough reading for many, so keep a medical dictionary and encylopedia nearby.

An excellent resource for lung cancer clinicians and patient
This second edition is an excellent, readable resource that makes few assumptions about the reader's familiarity with lung cancer, molecular biology, or cancer genetics. Contains many entirely new chapters as well as carefully updated material from the first edition. Geared to oncologists and researchers, but nonetheless a good foundation resource for patients and families who wish to learn a great deal about lung cancer and its management.

THE comprehensive cancer book
If you are looking for exellent value for money in (surgical) oncology, you have to purchase the MD Anderson Handbook. In a compulsively readable yet comprehensive style the entire field is covered. In contrast to its title, it is not only focussing on how things work in Houston, but altenative state of the art diagnostic and treatment options are discussed. In our surgical clinic, the book has become a standard reference text.

The most compact informative review of surgical oncology
This book is essential for inservice and general surgery board review

Review by one who uses this book
I have used this book and its previous edition for several years now. It is a classic and a must have for radiologists doing CNS MRI, especially general radiologists. The illustrations are excellent, the text clear and to the point and the cross references between cases are most helpful. When reading a case, this is the first book I pick up for help (there are 7 other books in my office)and generally the only one I need. I recommend this without reservation.

The best book in MRI imaging of CNS
I have read this book and I think it is the best book of MRI for learning all the patology of CNS, I cannot find it in my country, I would like to Know how can I buy it by internet.

Maingot's Abdominal Operations
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Education - Europe (21 January, 1997)
Author: Michael J. Zinner MD FACS
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

excellent, thorough, comprehensive
One of the most valuable texts any general surgeon specially the postgrads must have. each chapter is heavily loaded with very good graphics, and the text is very easy to grasp. and it gives a large space to operative details and steps. personally i take one of the volumes with me on duties. The only thing is that it is increasing necessary for the authors to update this edition. laproscopy in many situations is still -on the pages of this edition- in the cradle!!, which is not the true case, and many indications for some investigations have changed. but after all this is medicine. if you have this text and keepon with Advances in Surgery or Surgical Clinics of North America then you would cover most of the defects.

review abdominal operations
Excellent text for abdominal operations, easy to read with clear illustrations, reviews procedures that established the foundation of surgery, nice sections on ulcer operations, highly recomended.

Making Informed Medical Decisions: Where to Look and How to Use What You Find

In the world of modern medicine, a lot of us feel as if we're on our own when it comes to making decisions about our health. Sometimes the problems that arise are a slam-dunk--the symptoms are clear-cut, the treatment is standard, the results are immediate. But often we're faced with problems our doctor hasn't seen before, or that are more annoying than life-threatening, and we have to do our own research and draw our own conclusions.

Nancy Oster (a medical writer), Lucy Thomas (a medical librarian), and Dr. Darol Joseff (a physician) teach an adult-education course on finding health-related information on the Internet, and this book arose from their students' requests for more in-depth techniques and strategies to uncloak their own medical mysteries.

The authors recommend that the search for a medical solution begin and end with a doctor--someone who can offer a diagnosis, and then help you sort out the information you find on your own. What happens in between is in play. Nowadays it seems a foregone conclusion that you'll head to the Internet for information. "The Internet, however, has no central catalog and no review or oversight process to control the quality of information you'll find," the authors note. In other words, it's a short hop from legitimate medical information to "aspartame causes brain tumors," with no referee to tell you when you've hopped out of bounds.

Although the tips on searching the Internet and medical libraries are the highlights of Making Informed Medical Decisions, the authors also include vital information regarding your rights as a patient, interpreting health statistics, and seeking alternative therapies. Those who have been recently diagnosed with a chronic or life-altering medical condition would seem to be the most natural audience for this book, but many families will also want to keep it nearby--and then hope they never need to use it. --Lou Schuler

An essential companion for patients
In a time of personal crisis, when you or a loved one is stricken with a serious illness, it's daunting task, both emotionally and intellectually, to inform yourself fully. There's so much to learn, and it's often so scary and confusing. It's hard to know where to go, and what information to trust. The temptation is to simply place your faith blindly in your doctor's recommendation, and hope for the best. And yet, it's clear that the best medical decisions are fully informed and made in partnership with physicians.

This excellent guide is the perfect companion for patients and their families to learn how to negotiate the health care system, make the best choices, and get the best care possible. It's accessible, thorough and above all, intelligent. It makes the issues comprehensible to someone unfamiliar with the medical world, yet never condescends. It's exactly the kind of book I could have really used when I was diagnosed with cancer twelve years ago, and I'm so grateful it now exists. These are tools that everyone needs.

A necessary guide
At some point in time, all of us will have need for this book. We no longer can count on the overworked doctor to know everything about every disease and it is up to us to question, learn and become advocates for our health and health care. This book gives you the guidance necessary to become an informed advocate for your own health care. The book guides you through doctor's visits, how to get clarification of your condition and understand the impact of the particular disease you are dealing with. Numerous resources; experts, print and the web, are discussed, with the pros and cons of each presented and tips for evaluating their reliability.

The authors also present information concerning researching standard treatment options for health conditions as well as alternative treatments. Most importantly, I believe, they also encourage reaching out to others who have already been there, with information for locating people who have been through it.

The book is well organized, extremely clear and very easy to read. It is a fantastic source of information for anyone who finds they need to research health issues for themselves, friends or family members. I would highly recommend it for anyone to have as a medical reference.

An important read for todays medical student or applicant
As an applicant and medical student, I was instructed to read "Gifted Hands" (Ben Carson) and "House of God." This is much better. As the author is churned through the residency machinery, he meets a seemingly endless number of extreme personalities and situations. His experiences reminded me about the difficult choices in medicine and the humanity behind them.

It is a poignant and up-to-date book with lots of entertaining stories and valuable medical information. I highly recommend it!

Superb!
A nicely written mélange of exceptional egotism and abuse; astounding resolve and will that has no mercy for oneself; memorable characters; compassion; the inevitable, perhaps secret, humility of human limits; hilarity; and no apology. All of it cradled in the final authority of nature and the inconceivable habit of challenging death.
Miller entertainingly depicts the grueling culture of medicine and the making of a surgeon in our society.
I recommend highly.
