Can't refer to a specialist? Use this book!
When managed care makes it impossible to refer a client to someone who specializes in infertility, here is the book that will make you feel confident about your work. And when you don't have time to read a whole book at once, here is the book that allows you to choose the chapters you need when you need them. The impressive array of interdisciplinary experts follow the same format in each chapter, making cross-references for the reader very easy. This book is truly comprehensive, including topics such as "Special Populations" and "Adoption after Infertility", along with the practical guidelines we all want but which are often lost amidst theory and statistics in other books. The appendices and resource section are especially impressive. There are questionnaires, guidelines, consent forms, and a record-keeping form. The resources section has over 20 pages ofdouble-column entries. The authors have organized a stunning amount of information in a way that is useful to clinicians new to infertility issues and to those with experience who want to learn more

An indispensible resource for infertility counselors.
Burns and Covington's book has been very helpful in my practice. "Seasoned" clinicians as well as practitioners with less experience working with infertile clients will find the information presented valuable.

observing ourselves in our external world
Wanda McGee uses beautiful prose to evoke images of nature. From these images she draws analogies to our daily lives, teaching us that our external world abounds with lessons for those willing to quietly observe. Her book has encouraged me to take notice of my surroundings -- of beautiful trees, birds, landscapes --which I otherwise would have rushed right past.

I find her poignant descriptions of nature relaxing to read. I have really enjoyed unwinding with this book at the end of the day.

Looking out to see in...
In a world that most often pushes velocity, this book emphasizes the direction part of the velocity equation. It gently and effectively pulls us back into ourselves to look at where we're going.

Wanda McGee's little book with evocative illustrations by Cindy Mueller is like a spring that begins by nourishing you as an individual. When used with a group it joins other springs, creating a new flow, potentially moving the group to a new destination.

Composed of brief, simply illustrated descriptions of nature observed, and a provocative pattern of questions with each, the scenes evoke associations and spark light onto our own subterranean flows. The underground streams of our own lives get brought to the surface with the questions.

They all start with queries that tap into us at the individual, reflective level, appropriately since that's where the scenes evoke a reaction. Then they weave in questions about the meaning of our associations with the scene, flowing to questions that ask us to sense implications for our lives in groups and organizations. One is left, after flowing down this very gentle stream and around several bends in the river, with a clearer view of where to steer next, or what needs a closer look.

As an individual tool for reflection, the book gives one a wonderful view of the world. Used with a group it can work magic with creating a strong dialogue using inquiry and reflection. The secret is that they start with a place far away from the here-and-now and metaphorically work our spring of discovery towards the edge of a clear brook, running into other streams.

Thank you for Life Saving Information
I started looking for a book on the subject since the media hit with the Winona case. I saw Dr. Goldman on Larry King Live, have read quotes from him in recent Time and People magazines and decided to go out and read this compelling book. It touches all the issues I suffer from. It is a compassionate yet straight talking book about a disorder so secretive yet so destructive. Most people simply don't understand the torment and anguish. The book clears up misconceptions and helps the reader grab ahold of themselves. Dr. Goldman, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

A personal book for anyone dealing with Kleptomania
This book about Kleptomania is an excellent book. I was looking for books on this subject, but I found a lot of books that were written in the 80's. This book was published in 1998 and is a great book for anyone dealing with Kleptomania. This book is also good for family members and employers who are dealing with someone who is stealing. I feel that every employer should read this book.

This book is an easy to read and understand book. Great for teens who 'might' think that they have a problem and for older people who also after getting in trouble with the law find that they have a problem with stealing. Kleptomania is not people who steal everything; people with kleptomania steal things that are useless to them. This book tells you the signs of a person who might be kleptomania. Taking objects on impulse, without planning ahead; repeatedly taking items that are of no value or need for personal use; feeling increased tension right before the theft, and then feeling relief and pressure at the time of the theft and people with kleptomania steal without feelings of anger or revenge.

Kleptomania is a rare condition. Many people do not come to seek help when they are stealing, unless the courts have told them to. I started therapy on my own because I realized that I did have a problem. This book helped me to see that this is a rare problem and that I can be helped and so can anyone dealing with this condition. I would recommend this book to anyone who might think that they have a problem with stealing.

--Historic and Magnificent Treasures--
I had the opportunity to see the beautiful exhibit - Art in Poland in 1999 at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland. This book is the catalogue for that exhibit. The following museums were also participants: The Art Institute of Chicago, Huntsville Museum of Art, The San Diego Museum of Art and The Philbrook Museum of Art. It was the first time that this massive work of art had ever been seen outside of Poland.

LAND OF THE WINGED HORSEMEN: ART IN POLAND, 1572-1704 is a splendid pictorial of over 150 magnificent works of art from the Baroque era when Poland ranked as the second largest country in Europe. Poland's location is at the heart of Europe and for that reason its position is at the crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe. That melting pot of nations and cultures is reflected in this outstanding collection.

This book highlights paintings of the monarchy; icons, religious depictions and an historic and magnificent painting entitled The Battle of Vienna. Also shown are rich tapestries, exotic rugs, glassware, porcelains, military regalia, weaponry, liturgical objects and the crown of King Augustus III.

The Winged Horsemen was the name given to the Polish hussars. They carried a very long lance, wore traditional metal plate armor and usually had some type of animal skin draped across the shoulder. What gave them such a distinctive look were the wings that were mounted to the back of their saddles. In 1683 the King of Poland, Jan III Sobieski led an army of combined Polish and German Imperial soldiers to fend off an attack of 100,000 Turks who had laid siege to Vienna. The Polish Winged Horsemen led the assault and smashed through the Turkish defenses. The Turks fled in panic and Vienna was saved. A Turkish tent from that siege and armor from a Winged Horsemen are both pictured.

The beautiful photographs in this book are accompanied by well-explained descriptions of the various works of art.

This is the book from the Museum tour.
This is a positively wonderful book!! It was done from the museum exhibit from earlier in 1999 and 2000. It has the most wonderful close up pictures of the tent, the spoons, the saddle, the lances and I believe it also has the history of the different items also, so you can learn how important the certain items are to Poles. Before this exhibit, I had wondered where the "Silver Spoon" phrase came from. This exhibit answered this question, as does this book!! Wonderful book, and Enjoy!!!

Highly Recommended
Dr. Lantos lends us a glimpse of the medical profession and the trauma of premature births in this eye opening and powerful account. He sympathetically describes his story, while also proding us with difficult and often unanswerable questions to debate for much after the book has ended. If interested in medicine, child rearing or the world of ethics doctors face daily, this book should be on your list.

Invaluable view of medical care for premature babies
This well-written, comprehensive, and deeply thoughtful book explores the issues surrounding the care of premature infants from a variety of perspectives. Lantos' own experience as a doctor clearly informs the entire book, but he also includes the voices of others, especially parents who have written about the experience of having a premature baby. By framing the whole book as an exploration of a single (fictional) medical case, he gives readers a sense of the complexity of ethical decisions that stem from a single incident. Lantos has succeeded in writing a book that speaks eloquently to non-medical readers without talking down to them. Recommended most highly.

I would not hesitate to recommend it to any of my fellow students. It gets a double thumbs up from me!!

Forget the rest, Bray is the best.
Bray et.al is the best physiology text avaliable today. This text clearly presents a range of physiological topics and is well written by the learned staff of the Otago University Physiology Dept. Prof. Bray is to be commended for his concise and accurate editorial style. I found the figures particularly understandable and loved thier minimalistic style. A MUST for every med student and those interested in how the body functions. I look forward to the next edition.

MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW
What a great book, not only was it a wonderful read, but I got to enjoy a pleasant
odor each time I picked it up.
OK, what am I talking about right? Dr. Hirsch's book "Life's a Smelling Success" is about smells, yes you read that right, and
will you be surprised how your nose can help you in your everyday life.

Dr. Hirsch explains how certain smells help you remember things like birthdays, what you need to buy at the store, and will even unlock your mind to memories that you felt were forever gone.

Want to relieve stress, or sleep better? How about this, want to use your sense of smell to curb your appetite? The answer lies in the pages of this delicious smelling book. I'm serious, you will just have to run out and buy yourself a copy and begin to sniff your way
to success.

Thank you Dr. Hirsch, I assure you that I will be using much of what I have learned from your informative book.
Great read! Highly recommended!

Fascinating reading
There are a many excellent memory books on the market today. The majority cover various mnemonic techniques, the better ones including a section on biological factors - how nutrition, medication, aging, diseases, etc. affect memory. "Life's a smelling success is the first one I have seen that discusses scent and how it can be directly related to memory.

Dr. Alan Hirsch includes considerable information on experiments done with odors and how they affected learning and memory. Some of the odors discussed are common ones like lavender; others include butterscotch, green apple, and peppermint. We all know the pleasant experience of walking into a house or our favorite restaurant and smelling the wonderful odor of baking bread and how that immediately affects our mood. Dr. Hirsch explains that our "odor memory" transports us back to a pleasant state when we smelled the odor before. The premise of the book is that there are scents that do the same thing for learning. What if there are scents that cause us to be relaxed, but still alert? This is the perfect state for learning. What about odors that remove test anxiety? Throughout this text Dr. Hirsch mentions specific odors and the effect they typically have. He gives you the tools and techniques to build what he calls an "odor library". "Life's a Smelling Success" gets very specific in the research quoted. He looks at the relationship between such things as math and oranges. Or, how do mangos and limes affect males and females differently?

"Life's a Smelling Success" is a highly recommended read that shines light on an area not covered in other memory and learning books. Given that odors are used in everything from increasing sales in stores to calming aggressive people it seems strange that there is not more research on using them for personal growth. Dr. Hirsch starts filling that gap with this book. Bravo, Dr. Hirsch.

Great reference text
I used this book through 2 years of medical school and found it to be quite helpful. It doesn't go into a bunch on needless details, but give you what you need to know. The book is well-organized and has some excellent color photos as well. There is a quick reference section in the back which is helpful for boards when you need a quick review. It gives you the bug, the tests you would do, the path, and the drug to treat.

Great review book!
Well organized and easy to read. Some color pictures in the back. Breaks down essentially what you need to know for medical boards. virulence factors, drugs used to treat, etc.
