The best gyn reference textbook
Very well written and practically laid out. Superior to Novak's, Kistner, or Danforth.

A truly comprehensive, clearly written gynecology text.
I found Comprehensive Gynecology to be the best text I have read in this field. It is clear and consise yet comprehensively summarizes the current literature on each topic. Each chapter begins with a glossary of terms and ends with an excellent point by point review of key concepts. The text covers basic sciences, comprehensive evaluation of the female, general gynecology, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The chapters are well organized and include a synopsis of the current literature. I would recommend this text to anyone studing for fellowship exams. I have also read Copeland's Gynecology and in comparison found Comprehensive Gynecology to be superior in organization and readability.

This is a wonderful book! Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. The plot is suspenseful and rings true... it brought me right back to my days as an intern. I was also quite surprised by how moving the story is. I had no idea I would be so touched by it. Dr. Magallenes is a talented new writer, and I would recommend this book to anyone. In fact, everyone whom I have recommended it to has thoroughly enjoyed it!

D. Kado, MD, MS, UCLA School of Medicine
County is a well-written book that successfully captures the experience of being a medical resident in a county hospital. The dialogue is particularly believable, the plot well-designed, and the characters real. Whether you are a physician, a tired medical resident, a medical student, a curious pre-med, or a lay person interested in what it is like to be a doctor in a county hospital, this book will keep you turning the pages until the very end!

"I build hope..."
Dr. Mehl-Madrona's magnificent first book, COYOTE MEDICINE, was seen through wide-eyes: a young doctor discovering his own roots and shedding illusions about the omnipotence of science. By contrast, COYOTE HEALING reveals a sure sense of purpose and conviction in his approach.

One senses a mission- that this book is more than an account, but an active attempt to spread the word. No longer exploring, Dr. Mehl-Madrona has become the guru; here he is at the height of his powers and conviction and acts as advocate.

Operating from the perspective of a shaman, Dr. Mehl-Madrona respects the patient's ability to cure himself, but also "straddle(s) cultures," drawing on his varied expertise. As he explains, "Activating the inner healer is the most important aspect of what I do... I use herbs, diet, vitamins, exercise, drugs and a myriad of other techniques, but I recognize that the inner healer makes all these approaches work."

Because of the success of his first book, many people seek him out, and we hear their stories. They have usually been told their cases were beyond hope. Working with the author, some patients do recover, others sadly, do not. But Dr. Mehl-Madrona refuses to speak of "failures," nor does he use cases to argue for or against shamanic or complementary approaches. Rather, he sees the healing process itself as the miracle. As he says:

I build hope. I don't help everyone [in terms of cures]...I help them to show their true humanity, their true spirit, despite adversity...Each of my patients told me what a difference I had made in their lives. All I did was to recognize their true selves and coax those to the surface, despite everything else that was happening... Hope- not despair, not denial, not giving up, not demanding success...It comes from knowing that the Universe cares about us, even when our desires are not possible... The peacefulness of integrating these apparent contradictions is truly a miracle.

Much of his work involves Native American storytelling, using characters in stories to shed light on the patients' struggles. So, a woman who helps many people but is now undergoing chemotherapy is told a story of the "Gatherer," a Native American woman who collected healing plants, and was kidnapped and tortured, but made it through. Another woman who has been ill for decades is told a story about a young woman who was kidnapped, who had to throw away some prized items in order to escape. Here the doctor was showing his patient how to discard illness as an identity.

Some major themes emerge. A loss of community is said to cause disease, and one violently schizophrenic man finds his way back to sanity by being made an "honorary Indian" on a reservation. Another theme is illness as sublimated negativity in one's life.

But the doctor does not "blame the victim." Instead, he defines "disease" as literally that, dis-ease. In the eyes of a shaman, cause of illness is everywhere, and awareness of imbalance will lead us to finding "ease." In the author's words, "I can no longer imagine a physical problem that is not simultaneously psychological, spiritual and social..."

But we are not being punished by our illness, only being told that something is wrong. Gary Null echoes this when he talks about the fires burning in our (physiological) houses, and how often we ignore these fires, whether stress, abuse, self-hatred, etc.

Whether you believe in complimentary healing approaches or not, COYOTE HEALING helps define what it means to fight for wellness with dignity and peace. Having met Dr. Mehl-Madrona at his healing circle, I know his real voice: soft, thoughtful, nonjudgemental, and mischievous. In these pages this voice comes through, and brings comfort. Thank you again, Doctor.

A must read for anyone interested in healing
Lewis Mehl-Madrona, M.D. has written one of the best books on healing ever to be published. This book should be required reading for all cancer patients and survivors, for anyone suffering from chronic physical or emotional disease, and for therapists in all disciplines. Dr. Madrona's stories are poignant and will linger with you long after you've finished the last page. This book offers hope. It teaches that health truly is a mind-body-spirit phenomenon.

Baby Basics, November 26, 2000
I am a pediatrician and have been in general pediatric practice for over 25 years. In addition, I have four grown children. I highly recommend this book on general baby and child care and problem management. In my early learning years a book like this one would have been helpful to me both as a mother and as a pediatrician.

This compact little book is power packed with informative and easily readable tips for any mother, from the least experienced new mother to the veteran mother of a large brood. There is always something new to learn, and each child brings new and unexpected challenges. Dr. Baskerville's observations, comments and suggestions come from her long experience in interacting with mothers and children of every sort. It is easy to find your way around this book in order to find the answer to a specific question. It is also a comfort to just read straight through it, or through a section of it, for general information. Issues from taking the baby's temperature to how to position the baby for sleeping to problems with discipline are addressed. She also directs the reader to appropriate sources for further help if this is necessary.

In my opinion, this book, Baby Basics, should be a standard on every mother's nursery shelf. It is a ready reference of most of those little unexpected day to day problems, and it is a pleasure to read.

Baby Basics
Dr. Baskerville's "Baby Basics" is a common sense approach to caring for babies and toddlers. She answers many questions new parents ask in a way that is easy to understand and to carry out. I am a labor/delivery nurse and am in a position of answering many of these same questions from new parents before I send them home with their babies. I am so happy to have a book like this to refer to and I happily recommend it to my patients. I am buying a copy for each of my own children to use as they become parents for the first time or even if they already have a child. There should be more manuals like this for parents. Thank you Dr. Baskerville.

A book for anyone interested in melanocytic proliferations.
Since 1978, when Dr. Clark published his paper on the "B-K Mole Syndrome", this has been one of the most highly charged topics in the field of dermatopathology. Dr. Ackerman and colleagues slice through this topic with such ease that it makes one pause to ask why there was ever such a controversy. However, there still is considerable controversy about this topic throughout the dermatology community. If, however, more pathologists, dermatopathologists, and dermatologists would read this book and understand the premises the authors examine, it would clear up immediately so many of the so-called "issues" about these benign neoplasms that the controversy would go quietly into the night and be heard from no longer. This book is not only interesting from a historical perspective, but it also examines every major issue surrounding these lesions.

Mark A. Hurt, MD

dysplastic nevus
Dr. Ackerman once again has produced a excellent review of a very important topic in medicine. Those cosidering the purchase of DYSPLASTIC nevus most likely will be dermatologists, pathologists and physicians who have a special intetest in nevi and malignant melanoma. This comprehensive text compiles all of the currently available pathology and scientific understanding about one of the most challenging conditions in pathology.Dr. Ackerman's review is complete, easy to read and will be a very important reference to those who are interested in the current thinking about Dysplastic Nevi. I highly recommend this book. Marvin Pietruszka,M.D.

Stethoscope History
This book is the very informative result of extensive research. It has a lengthy appendix full of photographs of antique stethoscopes, over ten pages of references, and what I thought of as some pretty tedious text. Of course, that comment is coming from someone whose symbolic and sort of romantic fascination with the music of the human heart drove her to purchase anything concerning stethoscopes, and this book is certainly not directed at people who just love listening to hearts. I'm sure it's better suited to the medical professional or collector, and I'm neither one of those. I wound up with more information than I necessarily needed, but there's no harm in that, especially considering the price of the book.

The book discusses immediate and mediate auscultation and percussion, and the numerous changes the stethoscope has undergone since the first one was invented by Rene Laennec in 1816. It also touches on the controversies that surrounded the stethoscope when it was first invented and how many medical professionals doubted its value. Much of the same skepticism was present when the monaural stethoscope went out of style and the binaural stethoscope (the kind we see today) was ushered in. It also discusses specialized stethoscopes like the obstetrical stethoscope, differential stethoscope, and the teaching stethoscope. I can't imagine another resource that would contain more information on stethoscope history.

The writing is very uninvolved and strictly factual until the final chapter, which concerns modern medicine. Blaufox discusses the current electronic stethoscopes that are widely used today and successfully amplify sound to allow for more effective diagnoses and benefit the hearing-impaired. He then goes on to briefly discuss the various more advanced techniques that have come to replace traditional auscultation recently, such as echocardiography, tomography, and electrocardiography. He is very articulate in his assertion that medicine has become more unproductive and impersonal as a result of these technological advances. Sadly, fewer and fewer students have sufficient auscultation skills but are competent with other equipment. I liked the fact that Blaufox expressed his opinion in his last chapter that the decline in reliance upon the stethoscope is an unfortunate development.

Unique reference
This is an excellent reference and makes a wonderful addition to the library of the medical historian or antique collector. Although I imagine the target audience for this book is small, it is virtually indispensable to the collector of antique stethoscopes. There is some informative prose about the inception and development of the stethoscope and its integration to medical practice, but the uniquely valuable part of this book is the 45-page appendix where various stethoscope designs are pictured and described. This is the best single reference for identifying model types of antique stethoscopes that I have encountered. There is also an exhaustive bibliography for those who wish to pursue further research. The book is well worth the investment for the interested reader.

I'm so please someone finally wrote this book!
Finally, a book on Ayurveda that's firmly and delightfully grounded in history, theory, and practice. Dr. Ninivaggi's book is a fascinating and satisfying read and one of the few books on Ayurveda I've found that has really helped me to study the subject in depth. This is the book for all who want more than a sprinkling of fun facts and a few home remedies. I'd recommend this especially to those who have a background in science and Western medicine, but no-one who tries it will be disappointed.

Well written, concise, wonderful!
Ayurveda is a difficult subject at best. It has not recieved nearly as much attention as other Complementary Medical systems like TCM. So when a book comes along that is concise, thought-provoking, and well...exciting, on the subject it is certainly worth noting. An Elementary Textbook of Ayurveda is such a book! This is THE book on Ayurveda that I will recommend to all interested in this incredably healing Modality, and Dr. Ninivaggi deserves a lot of credit for putting out a work that is so easy to read, and yet has such a depth of information and insight. I have found myself consulting it again, and again. And each time I find in its pages some new way of thinking about Ayurveda. If you are a lay person with an interest in Ayurveda for yourself or your family, I recommend An Elementary Textbook of Ayurveda. It is easy to read, and yet thorough and informative. If you are a Practioner, either as a MD interested in Ayurveda, or a Practioner of a Complementary Modality interested in incorporating Ayurveda into your practice, I still highly recommend this book, because Dr. Ninivaggi will give you new insights into Ayurveda that it would be hard to find anywhere else. Keep this book in your office or practice space, share it with with your patients or clients. An Elementary Textbook of Ayurveda is that good!

Essential Textbook in this field
This is an essential textbook in the field of soft tissue tumors/sarcoma. I am a dermatologist and have bought them whenever this title has been revised. You can confirm the quality of this title by putting on bookshelf in all medical schools in Japan. (I haven't visiting libraries abroad, but I must be able to see it.) I recommend it not only dermatologist but also orthopedists and pathologists in the world!

The best soft tissue resource for pathologists
I first became familiar with this book a long time ago (first edition) through my mother, who is also a pathologist. This is "the" source for soft tissue tumors for residents and staff alike. The descriptions are concise, and the organization of chapters is good. This book is well-written and never dry. The literature is summarized very nicely.
