Excellant General Surgery Text Book
This is an excellant text book of general surgery. The book covers all the basic topics of surgery in a great mannor. There are plenty of good quality pictures and illustrations. The book is well divided into chapters. There is a summary at the end of each topic which gives a reivew of all the contents. I would highly recommend this book for rmedical students and surgical residents.

Outstanding introductory surgical text
I am a graduating senior medical student, and I happened to come upon this text quite by accident. Intending only to browse it for the moment, I found the text to be captivating. The author gives a clear and concise overview of every major surgical topic in a way that is approachable and easily understandible. The tables and figures nicely complement the "high yield" text. I only wish I had this text when I did my surgical clerkship.

Pollack's CU is the definitive text in uroradiology
After its publication 10 years ago, Clinical Urography immediately became the definitive multivolume text in uroradiology. With the additions of Dr. McClennan as co-editor and Drs. Dyer and Kenney as associate editors, the second edition actually consists of several textbooks combined into one, with contributions from around 220 authors, a substantial minority of whom are urologists.
Most of the authors are world-renowned authorities who have written about their particular areas of research and subspecialty expertise.

It is difficult to do justice to this monumental effort in a one-page review. The current edition is exceptionally well-organized and edited. The introductory section on imaging techniques is 600 pages alone, and there are entire and complete sections on developmental and congenital disorders and neuromuscular disorders, among many others. A comprehensive and highly practical section on interventional uroradiology is included. The chapter on obstructive uropathy is a small superb textbook itself, and the other chapters run the gamut from common topics, such as reflux, to obscure subjects, such as genitourinary tract brucellosis and amyloidosis.

Each chapter is extensively illustrated, and image quality, in general, is good to superior. I discovered virtually no content or typographic errors, which is particularly impressive given the length of the book, which is approximately 3,800 pages. Production values are uniformly high throughout the three volumes.

What is particularly surprising is how readable and highly practical Clinical Urography is. While it can be used as a reference work, individual chapters or long sections of the book can be read at a single sitting. There is excellent cross-referencing, and, in general, there is little repetition of material throughout the individual chapters and sections. Most of the chapters are extensively referenced, and the references, in general, have been updated.

There is an appropriate mixture of older imaging techniques and images and modern cross-sectional imaging techniques throughout the three volumes. Controversial or difficult topics, such as
renovascular hypertension, imaging of acquired renal cystic disease, and urinary incontinence, are handled in a comprehensive and balanced manner. There is excellent radiologic-pathologic correlation in the renal cystic and renal neoplastic sections. While there is not enough room to mention many of the highlights of the book, some chapters deserve special notice, including those on sonographic evaluation of the urinary tract, genitourinary tuberculosis, pediatric urinary tract infection, renal parenchymal disease, urethral and bladder trauma, and retroperitoneal fibrosis.

By design, there is a paucity of material on adult gynecologic imaging, although there is a sole chapter on gynecologic inflammatory disease. Individuals seeking comprehensive information in this area will have to refer to other textbooks. Other criticisms of the second edition are fairly minor. The chapter on radiation exposure is superficial and not geared to specific issues in urologic imaging. The chapter on conventional radiographs could have been shorter, and image quality could have been better. The chapter on lymphangiography is primarily of historic interest and could have been deleted. The discussion of scintigraphy of adrenal disease, with the exception of imaging of pheochromocytoma, is also primarily of historic interest. Also, in a few of the chapters (for example, "Retroperitoneal Tumors and Cysts"), the cases shown are fairly old and could have been updated.

The primary intended audience for the second edition of Clinical Urography is radiologists with a strong interest in the modern practice of uroradiology, as well as urologists, nephrologists, and pathologists who specialize in uropathology. The book also belongs in the libraries of all medical schools and radiology departments around the world. For a book of such depth and length, the list price of [price] is an absolute bargain.

The second edition of Clinical Urography more than achieves its stated goal in the preface, which is to serve as the source reference in urinary tract imaging. It is a testament to the incredible efforts of the late Dr. Howard Pollack, a co-editor, the associate editors, and all the varied contributors.

Authoritative, definitive reference for the specialty
After its initial publication in 1990, the first edition of Clinical Urography became the definitive textbook in urologic imaging. Both in breadth and depth, it was unequaled in its field. To perform the monumental task of updating this expansive work, Dr. Howard M. Pollack enlisted Dr. Bruce L. McClennan as coeditor and Drs. Ray Dyer and Philip J. Kenney as associate editors. A prestigious group of specialists, some of whom have authored uroradiology texts of their own, was then assembled to thoroughly report on the current practice of uroradiology.

Much has changed in uroradiology, as in every aspect of medicine, over the past 10 years. As a result, chapters in the first edition have been completely rewritten, and several new chapters have been added. Because this text includes both urologists and radiologists as contributors, the reader is able to gain a global overview of the diagnosis and treatment of urologic pathology because the text is not limited to just the imaging findings.

The section on interventional radiology is representative of the comprehensive nature of this text. This section alone contains 24 chapters ranging from percutaneous nephrostomies to lithotripsy. There is even a chapter on fetal obstructive uropathy.

MR imaging of the urinary tract has undergone substantial change since the publication of the first edition. State-of-the-art MR images and techniques are included in many of the chapters. Color
Doppler sonography is also contained in the appropriate chapters. Nuclear medicine evaluation of the urinary tract is thoroughly covered, which is difficult to accomplish in more focused books.
Cutting-edge techniques, such as positron emission tomography scanning, are discussed.

Overall, the quality of the more than 4000 images is outstanding. The text is very readable. References are exhaustive and would be an excellent aid in scholarly research in the field.

This three-volume tome should be in every hospital library as well as every departmental library for both radiology and urology. Specialists in uroradiology will find it to be an invaluable resource.

Shortly after this reference work was completed, Dr. Pollack unfortunately passed away. The second edition of Clinical Urography is a fitting tribute to his legacy, which is one of uncompromising pursuit of excellence in the diagnosis and treatment of urologic disease in patients everywhere.

Author's comments to Amazon.com
I would like to briefly explain our purpose in authoring this prescription manual. Every year, there are 7,000-10,000 deaths reported in the United States due to prescription errors. There are a number of reasons why the administration of medications has become so complex. These include polypharmacy (patients on many medications at the same time), the rapid volume and fast pace of today's clinical practices, the dizzying array of new and complicated drugs on the market and the loss of the "family pharmacist" that knows patients and their medications personally. Our main objective in creating the book is to provide the most essential information on commonly prescribed drugs in an easy to use, pocket sized(large pocket!)edition. This book is the only one of it's kind written by experts in pharmacology and clinical practice. I am an MD in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago and have a busy clinical practice and also teach and do clinical research. My father, Dr. Seymour Ehrenpreis, is a PhD in Biochemistry and Pharmacology, who not only adds a basic scientist's knowledge to the information provided but has also taught thousands of medical students the art of drug prescription. Our Advisory Board consists of 17 clinicians ranging from Professors of Medicine in a variety of specialties from several medical schools, a physician's assistant with the US Army, a microbiologist and a clinical psychologist. These individuals have all worked carefully to glean the most important and essential information needed to safely and properly prescribe about 500 drugs including over 900 trade names from a clinician's prospective. Areas covered for each entry include drug name, brand names, mechanism of action, susceptible organisms(for antibiotics, doses and indications, adjustment of dose in liver and kidney diseases, the elderly and children, timing with meals, use during pregnancy and lactation (with recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics when available),contraindications, warnings and precautions, very detailed advice to patients for avoiding adverse reactions and other drug related problems, common and serious side effects, clinically important drug interactions, parameters for the clinicians to monitor to avoid complications and finally, editorial comments. The editorial comments are "pearls of wisdom" that the authors or our Advisory panel have added to assist the prescriber. Aside from the aforementioned advantages of this book,a number of drugs which are either not included in or are only briefly mentioned in the PDR 2001 edition are described in detail in our book. Many of these drugs, such as IV nitroglycerine, dopamine, and methylprednisolone to name just a few, are commonly prescribed. Our book provides a means of looking these up and making sure that they are prescibed correctly. Eli D Ehrenpreis MD Chicago, Illinois

absolutely excellent
i just had to take the time to write this review to let people know how wonderful this book is. If you don't believe in yelling at or hitting your children, but you can't figure out what else to do, this is the book for you. I have a 4 year old and have been following this book's advice for about 6 months and it works every time. it worked right from the beginning. It made sense to me and fit my style of wanting to "teach" my daughter rather than scold and threaten. It gives you examples and step by step instructiions. It is not a book that you can just "flip through" to get answers to your questions. You have to "read" it all the way through because one section links to the other. But it reads easily and quickly like you are talking to someone who understands. You can read it in a day or two. My copy is highlighted and dog-eared all the way through. I can't say enough about this book. My daughter and I are BOTH happier and better "behaved". I hope the authors have written other books on the next age group and adolescents.

An expertly written "how to" manual
Collaboratively written by parenting experts Bridget A. Barnes and Steven M. York, Common Sense Parenting Of Toddlers And Preschoolers is a very practical and "parent friendly" guide to the raising young children. From setting reasonable expectations for young children; to teaching social skills and self-control; to turning daily and weekly routines into family traditions, to handling very practical issues such as toilet training, bedtime, and meals, Common Sense Parenting Of Toddlers And Preschoolers is an expertly written "how to" manual which is very highly recommended for parents and caretakers of children ages 2 through 5.

NOT TO BE MISSED
In a thoroughly modern approach to allergies, leading allergist Dr. Frank Kwong teaches how to be involved in your own care. THE COMPLETE ALLERGY BOOK covers every base, yet is easy to follow and fascinating to read.

Being a pack rat, I especially appreciated the chapter "Surveying and Cleaning the Home," which has educated me about clutter. Each chapter offers its own surprises. I have learned that in buying a condo or renting a unit, I should be provided with air ducting design information. I didn't suspect that in some buildings the exhaust from one unit actually becomes the incoming air of the next unit. There is even a chapter on sex and allergies. Yes, you can be allergic to your partner.

THE COMPLETE ALLERGY BOOK is a wonderful reference volume for every home. It enlightens and clarifies, and in case of serious trouble can be a lifesaver.

A must have for all Allergy sufferers!
I needed a book that would help me understand my allergies and how to live with them. This book was exactly what I was looking for. The author uses easy to understand terms that makes it an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that suffers from some sort of allergy.

Great read, convinced me to become a physician!
I found this book very interesting in terms of what the realities of premed realy are. I learned a lot of things that I was currently unaware of, and it gave me a stronger basis on what to expect in the next four years of my education, as a highschool student, it provided me with a lot of insight on how to prepare for premed classes, and how to balance my studying/working with my free time. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a career in medicine, as it will explain to you what to expect and how to handle it.

an absolutely essencial read or any pre-med student
Finally. A well written, practical book for pre- med students. The author is both a doctor and a lawyer. This fact alone gives him fabulous credibility. Extremely informative book. Also an excellent source for relatives of pre-med students, as that it explains what to expect.

Insightful and Informative
After years of suffering and going from one doctor to another I finally obtained the needed guidance from this book. Through its pages you are offered much information and the possibility of finding the proper avenue to health. Not all headaches are the same or stem from the same cause, therefore a cautionary but educated approach is the best route to take, and the authors with their experts (including a Naturopathic Physician)do so admirably. If one's objective is to rid or at least ameliorate their condition I strongly recommend the information compiled in this book.

Complete Idiot's Guide to Migraines and Other Headaches
An excellent, easy-to-read and very comprehensive book that should be highly useful to the millions of migraine sufferers. Also provides a handy reference for many related topics.

Complete Idiot's Guide to Quitting Smoking

For those who feel idiotic for developing a smoking habit in the first place, the thought of quitting may seem even harder to fathom. But take heart: Lowell Kleinman, M.D., a family physician and smoking-cessation specialist (alias "Dr. Quit") teams with Deborah Messina-Kleinman, M.P.H. (who sports an equally impressive smoking-cessation résumé) to hoist smokers up and over the many habit-breaking hurdles ahead. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Quitting Smoking begins with a close look at the smoker's world: how the habit begins, the physical and psychological pros and cons of nicotine, and why quitting hurts. The next section provides excellent information on cessation tools (nicotine patches, medications, support groups, acupuncture, hypnosis), the frightening anatomy of a cigarette, and work pages to help you customize a quitting strategy. Then it's time to quit. A seven-day countdown to Quit Day helps smokers develop an accountability network, focus on their goal, even to make plans for all the money they'll save. Special attention to the first 24 smoke-free hours addresses cravings and how to beat them; the 48-hour check-in delves into withdrawal, focuses on the physical benefits already taking place, and encourages healthy rewards. Throughout the book, the authors provide "smoke signals" (quick definitions of terms related to smoking), often surprising nutshell statistics called "pack facts," and excellent written exercises charmingly titled "buttkickers." But perhaps most helpful are the Kleinmans' true understanding and advice regarding the dark side of quitting: depression, anxiety, and weight gain. Pages of warm encouragement are accompanied by multiple proven techniques to conquer these and other quitters' enemies. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Quitting Smoking can be applauded for its somewhat humorous yet quite intelligent approach to a dead-serious topic. --Liane Thomas

the last book you'll ever read in a cloud of smoke...
I have been a 1 pack-a-day-smoker for about 25 years and even though the physical need and mental desire to quit became stronger every year, I just couldn't do it or 'stay quit'. Tried about 4 times with success-rates averaging from a few weeks to a few (3) months ... But at some point, I picked up that cigarette again. And usually I didn't even have a good reason. So basically I wanted desperately to be motivated enough to quit for good now. This book provided me literally with e v e r y t h i n g I always wanted (and needed) to know about smoking & quitting. An informed person, I was then gently taken by the hand and even more gently guided to never-smoke-again-land. Who would ever have imagined that I would be eagerly & impatiently waiting for the day I would (finally!) be a l l o w e d to quit !... This book got me to that point. And beyond smoking... And now, over 1 smoke-free year later, I'm still enjoying my new life. Without having killed my friends/family/collegues/myself in the process... So I would like to extend my infinite thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Quit for the precious information and extremely motivating guidance they provide in this quit-smoking bible... A definite recommendation : reads like a good novel, puts quite a few smiles on your face and last but not least...(don't say I didn't warn you !) there's a 95 percent chance that you won't make it to the end of this book smoking ! Wanna bet ?

This book is just what you've been looking for
I've tried everything to quit smoking, hypnosis, patches, acupuncture, cold turkey (at least 100 times), and nothing has worked for more than 3 months. I went to the library one day, and this book caught my eye, thank goodness. It is a wealth of information for a smoker wanting desperately to quit. From this book, I have developed my "3 W" plan (Water,Walk, and Web). And for me, it's working. Question: When is the website going to be ready? (drandmrsquit.com)
