Incredible book: makes pathophysiology seem easyI just finished Cardiovascular Pathophysiology by Kusumoto and I was truly impressed. I will be entering a pre-med program next year, yet I understood every word of the book. I've read a fair amount of medical textbooks out of interest, yet this is the first one that read as easily as a novel: it gives you all the information you need (ie basic physiology) to understand the pathophysiology of the most common cardiovascular syndromes and doesn't assume that you already know everything. This must be an amazing book for medical students if a high school student can understand its content! The diagrams are clear and frequent, the questions at the end of each chapter are helpful but there are too few of them (4 or 5 per chapter) The systematic approach to each disease makes the content coherent and clear. The information is detailed but not so much that it becomes sterile academic jargon. A must for anyone interested in cardiovascular syndromes, even more so for medical students.

Great advice from a great doctorMy mother is old. Like, really really old. I mean, I'm old but come ON! Point is, she's senile and no fun, really. So when I found Dr. S.'s book, I was elated. He had all sorts of advice like how to hide pills in her food and what kind of entertainment the elderly like (bright colors, soft music, long stories). Sooner or later you're gonna get old too, so it's a good thing we've got enormous geniuses like the blessed Dr. Scileppi around to help us out. His wife must be very lucky-- she'll have a great caretaker when she reaches old age.
Excellent Resource!A most helpful book, filled with wisdom, insight, pratical advice, places to turn for concrete help. So glad I stumbled upon it and now telling all my friends who are going through it to read this. I just did not want to be my mother's mother, no, not going to go there, ran away from it for years, until I finally had to face it, and now that I have accepted it and learned what to do becuase of this book, I am so furious at myself for running away for so long. With knowledge comes coping skills, and this book will give you that and more. The other great book that will help you cope is "Elder Rage".

Suggested reading for all who have had or are facing a C-SecThis is a very good book with an excellent examination of the whys and hows of C-sections. I'm recommending this one for the library at my birth center because it's very helpful in presenting medical information to a layman audience without talking down to them, and it even helped me understand my medical record. While I believe my C was necessary for the health of the child (whether or not I should have been induced is another issue) and I did not have any depression about it, I really liked that the authors want people to understand what happened to them and to hopefully receive some peace about having had a C if they have feelings of failure.
An Unflinching Look at the Realities of C-SectionsYou couldn't ask for a better look at "surgical birth", as the authors call it. While this is quite a thin book, it adequately covers everything an expectant mother needs to know. Chapters include "Why are Cesarean Sections Performed?", "A Brief History of Cesarean Section", "What Happens in Cesarean Section and Who Performs the Surgery", "Considering the Risks of Cesarean Section" as well as discussions of recovery, postpartum depression, and contraception choices. This book takes the hype and argument out of C-sections. I've read several of the "big" books of childbirth, and none of them covered Cesareans as completely and honestly as this one.

a piece of homeHaving grown up in Baltimore, these pieces offer a flavor of the city and a reminder of what makes Baltimore special and ... well, unusual. Here we find Gertrude Stein, Al Capone, Dorothy Parker, ice cream and candy makers, cemetary tour guides, and a host of other residents and passers-through, all unique, and some a bit off-the-beam. We visit some great Baltimore places--including my favorite site in Charm City--the Great Blacks in Wax Museum. And we get it all through the eyes of a trio of fine writers, Baltimore characters themselves, bringing to life not just the history, the people, places, and things of Baltimore, but the very voice of the city. It surely is The Land of Pleasant Living. Thanks, hun.
Engrossing!Even if you're not from Baltimore, you'll be fascinated by these short anecdotes. The authors bring to life a variety of odd characters, old structures, and out-of-the-way places. The stories are by turns funny, tragic, and nostalgic... and always interesting.

The heart and soul of the bayMs. Vojtech captures the heart and soul of the Chesapeake bay with her delightful book on skipjacks. If you think that this book is just a book of pictures, you're wrong. While the photographs are superb, it is the writing that brings to the forefront the hard and lonely life of a waterman.
This book should be an essential element of personal library within a few hours drive of the bay.
Pat Vojtech's Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks. This is a must have book for Chesapeake Bay skipjack devotees as well as others interested in work boats. Pat's over 50 beautiful color photos of skipjacks in action on the Cheapeakee Bay are worth the price by themselves. Ms Vojtech supports the photos with a facinating history of the oyster tonging and dredging along vignets of actual people in the trade. Interesting, is the discussion of economics which has extended the lfie of working sail on the Chesapeake to protect the oyster beds from depletion.

Recommended for environmental studies reading listsThe Chesapeake: An Environmental Biography by educator and political history expert John Wennersten is the informed story of the Chesapeake Bay (also called the Crown Jewel of Maryland) and the Mid-Atlantic region. From its ice age origins 20,000 years ago to how its modern-day health reflects directly on the health of waters all over the world, The Chesapeake: An Environmental Biography covers all that human science and history have known about this remarkable body of water. Strongly recommended for environmental studies reading lists and reference collections.
The Survival of the Planet Is not a Special InterestThis book confirms Wennersten's place as a premier authority on the Chesapeake Bay region. Like his earlier books, it renders massive, meticulous scholarship in eminently readable form for the general public. Beginning before the arrival of human beings, his story traces the impact of humans on their habitat and its impact on them from the First Native Americans through the tobacco kingdoms of the colonial period and the systematic exploitation of land and water down to the present day, concluding with hopes (dim though they may be) for the future, in the face of the staggering complexity of technological, political and economic forces. With a significance that goes well beyond its regional focus, the book is far from a sentimental plea for the reclamation of lost forests and dying waterways. Instead, Wennersten presents us with a daunting vision of the kind of rethinking that might help us to resist the continued commodification of nature, and to understand the need to reconsider some or our fundamental values. The fabled independence of the waterman, the vaunted creativity of the entrepreneurial spirit, and the generally unchallenged desirability of infinite economic growth all need to be reexamined. This book is an excellent gift for anyone who wants to begin understanding the processes -- natural, economic, cultural and political -- that could very well put human beings themselves on the endangered species list.

This book was a must have for our familyThis handbook explained how cancer develops and answered many of my families questions on the side-effects of chemo and radiation therapy. We even bought extras to share with our extended family.
A comprehensive guide for parents of children with cancerDrs. Steen and Mirro and the many other contributers from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have made a significant contribution to the clinical care of children with cancer in their editing of this new book. The chapters cover many topics to give parents an overview of the current scientific understanding of childhood cancers, along with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment procedures. This will be an invaluable aid to the unfortunate parents who have to face along with their children an often overwhelming battle for their precious little lives. The authors highlight the magnificent progress that has been made in the past 40 years as many childhood cancers can now be successfully treated almost 80% of the time. It covers spiritual, psychological and social aspects of treatment and even the topic of alternative therapies. It includes testimonials of success and a chapter dealing with the hardest topic--letting a child die when there is no longer any reasonable hope for curative treatment. It informs parents about the testing procedures their children will have and talks about the research-related issues that they will likely encounter. It provides useful address and links for support groups and additional information. I would highly recommend this book for parents and the professionals who deal with those parents who have children with cancer.

Concise, yet comprehensive sytematic approach to bioethicsDr. Jonsen is one the nation's germinal thinkers in the field of bioethics. Through his experience and associations at several of the renowned medical academic institutions in this coutnry he sets forth a clear systematic approach to problems in bioethics. This includes a review of his "4-box" method for approaching ethical problems and then reviews basic ethical principles as well as legal definitions. His approach to clincal dilemmas provides a refreshing analytical process for dilineating issues and conflicts.
This is an excellent resource for those in medical settings. The authors suggest another method of evaluating ethical dilemmas. They suggest one examine the situation in light of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual features.
Because the approach is clinical, rather than theoretical, some of the medical details presented are somewhat technical. This is a book for those working in a medical setting or otherwise engaged with medical ethics.
I read the book based on the recommendation of a bioethics lecturer. It was further recommended recently by the Director of the Program in Medical Ethics for University of California, Irvine.
