Having been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I could truly relate to the feelings other women in the book experienced. I too had to make so many decisions in a short period of time. As I read the book, I realized how many other women had been in that same terrifying place, and how many women met the challenge of healing head on. Every woman's cancer is different, but the feelings that accompany the daignosis are the same. I truly appreciate the honesty and the willingness of all of the survivors who shared their stories. I would highly recommend the book to all women with breast cancer and to their families.

After my diagnosis, I waded through shelves of library books on alternative health/breast cancer/healing options in order to find some of the information in this succinct literate volume. This anthology by complementary and alternative medical experts addresses both scientific and spiritual approaches for living with breast cancer. The Breathing Disorders Sourcebook is "the guide" on the breathing process and the disorders that are associated with it. Diseases of the air passaages reviewed include, Rhinitis, Nasal Polps, Sleep Apnea, Asthma, Chronir Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Brochiectas, Cystic Fibrosis, and Lung Cancer. The book also covers diseases of the air sacs and pulmonary vessels. The introductory chapter has a good primer on how the respiratory process works and is integrated with the rest of the body. Another chapter is devoted to medical evaluation and treatment, signs and symptoms of breathing disorders. The text is succinct and direct, with figures and illustrations to help the reader. At times, the book can be technical for the lay reader, but the book includes a useful glossary for terms that are unfamiliar. Perhaps the best value of this book is the abundance of resource material in the Appendix. There are listings of how to get information by phone, contact referral centers, pulmonary rehab centers, national organizations, newsletters, books and pamphlets, allergy and repiratory supplies, and of course, my favorite, a guide to the best web sites on breathing disorders. If you have a breathing disorder, this book definately should be read and will serve well as a future reference. The author brings a lot of experience to his book and it is clear he knows what he is talking about. A small investment for such an tremendous amount of information and advice.

How do we breathe. Dr. Adams' dandy book lets us count the ways of how we breathe, what can go wrong and what can be done to help us breathe easier. I found the Breathing Disorders Sourcebook a great read with so much information that will allow you to improve your breathing and in many cases avoid lung disease by lifestyle changes. I recommended this book to anyone that has a lung disorder or wants to prevent getting a lung disorder.

I was thrilled to find and read this book, the most complete one about the Canal I've found. As a frequent runner on and veteran of several cycling trips along the entire length of the Canal--as well as a resident of Georgetown--I have long had an interest in and love for the Canal.

The author, Mike High, uses many interesting and entertaining vignettes to tell the story of the Canal. He divides the book into four parts: "Historical Sketch", "Structures along the Canal", "Visiting the Canal", and "Canal Guide".

The first two sections put the Canal into a fascinating historical and engineering context, including George Washington's role in the development of the Canal, and the Canal's involvement in the Civil War. The last section is a concise, mile-by-mile guidebook.

In addition to history, High also presents useful information, including accommodations located nearby the Canal and suggested activities on/near the Canal.

For $... a "best buy".

My family lived in Washington for ten years. We often hiked on the C & O Canal. I studied for a masters in American history while we were there. The C & O Canal Companion would have added enormously to all of those experiences.

Reading this book's vignettes provides intimate connections to our nation's past. For example, The Companion reports that after the Revolutionary War, George Washington founded the Patowmack Company, an early attempt at making the Potomac River navigable because of his interest in his "western properties" across the Appalachian mountains. This guide gives a glimpse of the first President that we do not always see while pointing out visible remnants of those efforts.

In a notation about Chain Bridge, a beloved route to many of today's Washington suburbs, the guide shows the Civil War up close and personal. A Confederate sentinel was posted on the south side of the bridge, a Union soldier, mere yards away, on the north side. Furthermore, that same entry gives a brief sketch of Private William Scott who fell asleep there on his post. Court-marshaled by McClellan, pardoned by President Lincoln, William Scott went on to fight and die in battle for the Union cause. The Companion furnishes helpful information about parking, hiking, bed and board opportunities which are difficult to find elsewhere. It gives addresses and telephone numbers for reservations or further information.

Having looked at the Companion for specific data on one short stretch of the Canal, I have been lured into reading further, more like following a story than studying a guide. It made me want to return to Washington with children, hiking boots and The Companion in hand.

This book is perhaps the most important book written on cancer in the twentieth century. This is because Josef Issels demonstrated in his Cancer Clinic in Bavaria the most successful results ever achieved with late stage cancer patients (16.6% five-year survival and 15% fifteen-year survival - more than 5 times better than any orthodox therapy before or since.
Recent evidence continues to question the current paradigm that cancer is a local disease that later spreads. Issels instead saw cancer as a systemic disease that in its later stages showed observable symptoms, the tumours. Treating the tumours was therefore a waste of time unless the cause was tackled. He saw the causes as many, including physical, emotional and spiritual so he tackled all possibilities with dedication and a caring approach. The only contributing factor he apprently underestimated was the emotions. Four well-run randomised trials have since shown that simply tackling the emotional causes can have dramatic results, typically 50-70% increased survival times. But his Wholebody-therapy he used in the 1960s has still not been matched by any of the other alternative cancer therapists since. The book gives a history of the treatment of cancer over the past few thousands of years and goes into a lot of well-documented factors that make up his total treatment. For those who want to understand the cancer process this book is essential reading.

The one word that can ruin your day, actually ruin your life is Cancer. My wife and I are fighting and I mean fighting! We are very careful who we talk to and what we read and listen to. This book is for fighters. If your fight currently involves that nasty word (cancer), get this book and strengthen your fight. The Cardiac Surgeon's Diet and Health Design really changed the way I eat. It is the first diet book that made sense to me. Dr. Loughridge puts into easy-to-read tables the information that helps you get healthy not just to lose weight, but to start a new life. I will never be without the concepts in this book. I would recommend it for everyone.

This was a perfect, but not too pushy gift, for a health challenged family member.

This book offers those interested in cardiac surgery a wonderful source of information. It is presented in such a manner that it is educational and understandible for those just beginning medical school through those who are active attendings of cardiac surgery. A book that should be on everyones shelf, or better yet.. open on their desk!
