A Comprehensive Guide to a National Shrine
I first found this book in it's first edition in 1994 after a trip to D.C. After picking it up from the library, I really wished that I had it when I was in D.C. I read it from cover to cover and learned so much about Arlington. I picked up the second edition during a visit to ANC in September, 2001. Every grave marker and memorial of renown is mentioned and the history behind the larger monuments is very good. It would be really nice if color pictures accompanied the text. I hope that Mr. Peters continues to update the book every now and then.

Arlington National Cemetary Shrine to National Heros. GREAT!
This is by far the best text devoted to the history of Arlington national cemetery I've seen. It begins with a detailed hisory of how the Washington-Lee family aquired the property, and the government seizure during the Civil war.. The property was used as a burial ground in part to prevent Robert E. Lee family from returning. The book goes on to list numerous notables now buried there and includes a brief but informative biography of each, most have pictures of the gravesite. Finally the book lists the many memorials inside and around the cemetery and the offical requirements for burial at Arlington.. A Fascinating book, I've read it several times and find something new every time I pick it up. Well worth purchasing for the history buff, or the casual tourist who wants to learn more about our most important national shrine.

40 years of daily mugraines Cured....Miracle?
In Dec. '97 and Jan. '98 My wife (native Costa Rican, Now US citizen) and I spent the holidays in Costa Rica. I had already read "Folk Medicine" by D.C. Jarvis and while we were visiting one of my wife's friends I noticed our hostess (the wife) seemed in pain. Upon querying her she said she only had one of her daily migraines which she has suffered most of her life. The migraines began when she was around 12 years and she rarely went even one day since without them. No doctors had done anything for her. She "lived" on Ibuprofen, 1000mgs 2/3 times a day. She was 52 Y.O. I mentioned the Folk Medicine book and 2 tsp vinegar with 2 tsp honey in a full glass of water. I told her it was worth a try, but (fearing it may take a while to take effect) I told her to try it faithfully for at least a week before abandoning it. I returned next day (1/2 block away) to find her bright and smiling giving me a big hug! NO MIGRAINE!! This was surprising enough, but I was skeptical...placebo?....To be brief, she ran out of vinegar at 25 days, and thought she was cured...no mugraines, no pain killers. After 4 days with no mixture she had her first migraine again, and we quickly got her some more vinegar. Immediately, on re-starting the vinegar/honey drink, no migraines. When we left to return to USA she was on her 45th day without migraines except for the day mentioned. She now drinks 2 glasses a day and so far, NO MIGRAINES!! I of course felt delighted to have been able to help her this way. She had the real thing with flashing lights, sounds, grinding pain. She really looks like a different, bright, person. Any one wishing to verify this I can give her name and address in C.R. Her daughter is married and lives here in the USA near us. Dan Manning

Should be required reading from pre-school to med-school!
All that Dr. Jarvis wrote as to what the outcome would be if an individual would follow the stated regime of vinegar, honey, and kelp I can personally attest to. The excruciating joint and muscle pain, the fatigue and chronic upper respiratory infections that were described where written as if he knew me as a patient. Having suffered the paralysis that he described on page 29 in the soft covered edition I knew that he knew and understood in detail exactly what he was writing about. This is a 'must read' for everyone who wants to get well and stay well. For those who exercise and eat right and are well this book should be read for further understanding as to how the body is manufacturing acids, utilizing acids and eliminating acids to keep them that way. This book should be brought to the forefront and promoted as a 'must have' book for every household.

A-Z book review
This is a great book for anyone to read! It is very easy to understand, the medicines are explained in simple english. It would be an extremely useful tool for any student studying rheumatology because they would have quick reference to all of the arthritic medicines with brand names, symptoms, precautions, and general results. A person afflicted by arthritis would want to read this book because it helps you choose which medicines would be best for YOU by talking about many medicines and what they are used for...this is something that i did not see in many other books. It's simple, easy to read, can be used like a dictionary of medicine, and is reliable. I would reccomend it for anyone who needs information on arthritis.

finally understanding your medications
This book is unique among the various types of medical textbooks in that it does not read like a medical textbook. Lay persons to specialists in the field can benefit from reading this book. It is especially helpful to people who have a rheumatic disease and who are taking any treatment therapies. A substantial number of people being treated with arthritis medications also have other health problems for which they are taking medication. Unfortunately, too little time is available to spend educating these patients about the mechanisms of drug actions, their potential for interaction with other drugs, proper dosing, and the risk/benefit ration of available treatments. Dr. Stein does a good job in this regard. The book is well organized into categories that allow the reader to easily find information about the specific drugs that are of interest. However, I recommend reading it from cover to cover for a comprehensive overview of the rheumatic diseases and current treatment options. This book will be helpful to patients, physicians, medical students and those allied health professionals who participate in the care and education of persons with arthritis.

THE FISRT ATLAS OF ONCOLOGY PET-SCAN
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an imaging technique that provides physicians and researchers with unique information about the body's chemistry. Unlike computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which primarily examine anatomy, PET allows us to visualize body function.

Positron Emission Tomography is a non invasive, diagnostic imaging technique for measuring the metabolic activity of cells in the human body. It is useful clinically in patients with certain conditions affecting the brain and the heart as well as in patients with certain types of cancer. The field of PET has been quickly emerging into clinical diagnostic medicine. PET has been in clinical use since the early 1990s.

There is considerable information about PET inside this book

This Atlas attempts to distil more than five year's of clinical PET imaging, it indicate chapter after chapter, to clinicians the role of PET in improvings patient care.

In Introduction and inside the first part, readers can find some information about technical aspects of imaging and the scientific bases of nuclear physics, positron annihilation, imaging acquisition, and scanners.

In the Second part, the most important, authors comment each clinical issues. 1.Lymphoma 2.Lung Cancer 3. Breast Cancer 4.Head & Neck Cancer 5.Colorectal Cancer 6. Melanoma 7.Primary Brain tumour And Evolving oncology applications (Thyroid & para, Oesophagus, Liver, Renal...)

In the Last Part, this book talk about other applications of PET in Neurology and Psychiatrics, Cardiology Fields.

Inside each chapter, you can find important indications, suggest algorithm incorporating PET, lot of illustration B&W and color, clinical cases, and bibliography.

Most of this atlas is devoted to oncology. I was very please to read this Atlas.

Atlas of Clinical Positron Emission Tomography
This is a very good book. This book covers from Basic to date advances in PET. This book should be used as hand book of PET.

Ayahuasca: Human Consciousness and the Spirits of Nature
Published in Paperback by Thunder's Mouth Press (28 April, 1999)
Authors: Ralph, Ph.D. Metzner, J. C., Ph.D. Callaway, Charles S., MD Grob, and Dennis J., Ph.D. McKenna
Amazon base price: $10.47
List price: $14.95 (that's 30% off!)
Ayahuasca is a tea made from two plants found, until recently, only in the Amazon basin. Indigenous people of the region have used it for medicinal and shamanic purposes since time immemorial. In the last century, it has been ceremonially incorporated by polyglot Christian/goddess religions springing up in Brazil and by seekers on the margins of consciousness exploration. In this book, Metzner, a hallucinogenic and mystical experience researcher for over 35 years, has compiled essays and journal-type writings from a wide assortment of people who have experienced its divinity-evoking effects--28 scientists, psychologists, chemists, curious laypeople, and practitioners of these religions. While uneven in literary ability, each contributor provides an insightful peek behind the curtain of an experience that until now has been shrouded in tribal secrecy and cult ritual--truly an adventure into the Amazon of the mind. --Randall Cohan

Metzner Rules
It is rare for me to have such unbridled praise for any individual writer, but Metzner is quite simply a shining intellect - a hero among others.

Anything with the name Ralph Metzner even remotely attached to it is a safe buy. Metzner brings vitality and encyclopedic awareness to every project. An elder statesman responsible for such dramatic shifts in consciousness within this nation and throughout the world, buy his works and read them with pleasure.

What is striking about this work is the respect he brings to the subject and the well-constructed tapestry of thought contained within the pages.

Also, the design of this book is beautiful.

Solid content with the stamp of greatness. Palatable to the senses and nourishing to the neurons.

Cannot go wrong here!

Interesting, Thorough, professional, well-written!
This book discusses Ayahuasca from a variety of perspectives: historical, religious, chemical, cultural, horticultural and experiencial. The way the book is structured it would be easy for a reader to skip over the topics that don't interest them. All of the information is presented in a thorough, well-written, and objective manner offering some conclusions while at the same time allowing the reader to form their own.

Most interesting were the 25 or so personal accounts, 3-4 pages each written by people who appeared to Americans/Westerners who took the drug for religious/spiritual purposes and in a religious/spiritual setting. It was clear, based on their mindset (objectives and beliefs) and the religious setting that Ayahuasca seems to somehow create a religious construct through which a person can work through personal issues or sort through personal beliefs. The experience seemed to have a profound affect on most of these people.

Overall, I got the impression that Ayahuasca was not connecting these individuals to something divine outside of themselves, but rather that it was freeing the brain up to explore the subconscious/ID in order to resolve problems or explore issues in the persons life.

Well worth reading if you're interested in this sort of thing.

The Other Side of the Coin
For Joe Stirt, his daughter's struggle to survive the first few months of life forces him and his wife to view the hospital at which they work from the patient's point of view. For the reader, this book is a look into some of the true ins and outs of the medical profession. Foremost in all of this, however, is the stinging reality that their daughter's life, teetering on the brink of collapse, is not in their hands.

For anyone whose loved ones must pay the hospital a visit, this book is a must-read account of what strings one father and mother pull to try to save the life of their premature baby daughter. And for those familiar with the medical profession, this story is a humbling awakening to attitudes and practices of the medical profession from the patient's standpoint.

Stirt's flowing style and unfeigned suspense makes Baby impossible to put down. I recommend this book to all readers.

Baby by Dr. Joseph Stirt
This book is a masterpiece. Dr. Stirt gives a wonderful portrayal of a parent with a critically ill child. His heartfelt comments interspersed with the medical record is a marvelous touch that I have never seen before. I only hope that someday he continues his writing career.

Magnificently comprehensive Baltimore history
This is one of the finest and most complete Baltimore history books you well ever encounter in your life. However, it does inadvertently omit one significant fact in the creation of Baltimore. My great-grandfather was a German immigrant named Boston Fear. He was the original creator of Walbrook: Baltimore's very first suburb. Walbrook was originally named Fearville in honor of Boston Fear.
I highly recommend that individuals with an interest in the constructive formation of Baltimore purchase a copy of this exquisitely detailed book for your own personal collection.

Awesome
The best and most comprehensive history of Baltimore ever written. Olson is to be commended for her years of research and dedication, and the result is incredible.

Great even for an "amateur" studier
I first found this book at our local university medical library, then bought a copy for myself. I used it to study the possible causes of infertility. I'm not in the medical profession or a medical student (other than as a hobby) but this book was easy for me to comprehend.

GREAT
this book is the book you want to have when you're doing your endocrinology rotation. It goes step by step from the basics and it doesn't loose itself into minor not important detales

THANKS FOR THE "A" MYRNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Before I bought "Exploring Medical Language" I knew absolutely nothing, and I mean nothing about Medical Terminology.
And to tell you the truth, when I first opened this huge, intimidating, monster of a book, It scared... me... I mean, wouldn't "rhabdomyosarcoma" or "esophagogastroduodenoscopy"
frighten you (just a bit) I thought, nooooo way.

But I opened it, read it, did the cool excersises, listen the the audio tapes, played a bit with the CD-R.

She begins at the beginning.....Little baby steps.

All of a sudden... I was like, I get it! I really get it!
Not only that, but I was beginning to enjoy it.

The prefix, suffix, and word roots suddenely become beautiful, flowing words that make sense.
Myrna LaFleur Brooks made this book come alive, interesting, and allowed medical language to become a little bit like music.
Well, a little!!!! Thanx for the "A" Myrna!

This text is invaluable
I'm currently using this book as a supplemental text for my paramedic training. We've just finished cardiology, and I couldn't have done it without this text. I already owned Phalen, Dubin, and Huff; all are good, but the Huszar text is now the one I go to first when I have a question about ECG's. There are a multitude of practical illustrations, tables, and review questions. Best of all is the 200-and-some strips for practice in the appendix. Highly recommend!!
