Great buy
The new edition of Harriet Lane is an excellent buy. Concise, up-to-date and precise, it is an essential ward rounds and on call book for all pediatricians.
However, I would suggest two improvements to the publishers:
Better binding (considering how often the book is used) and a slightly darker print-the current one looks faded already, though the font is very user-friendly.
Dr Sajeev

Any physician in a pediatric field needs this book!
I first used the Harriet Lane Handbook during my pediatric rotation in my 3rd year of med school in 1981 (?10th edition), & I still use it (16th edition) in my busy pediatric surgical practice. It is especially useful for med students, pediatric residents, other residents (eg, surgical) when rotating through pediatric services, & practicing pediatricians & other pediatric specialists.

The section I use most frequently is the formulary of drug doses. Physicians treating adults generally memorize the one dose of each drug to give, but kids come in many different sizes, so the handbook is indispensible for drug dosing indexed to body weight. My second most used section is the one with all the growth charts, primarily to check for failure-to-thrive. The other section I use a good bit is the one analyzing baby (& older kid) enteral formulas to help guide nutritional therapy.

My only problem with the Handbook is that it has grown in size with each edition. It used to fit conveniently in a lab coat pocket, & it traveled all over the hospital with me. Now it's almost too big & heavy to carry around, so it stays on my desk (& another on my nightstand by the phone at home).

If you can't get a free copy of the Harriet Lane Handbook from some drug rep, go ahead & buy it.

Essential pocket reference
This book is so often seen on the pediatric ward that it hardly needs a review. I've been instructing residents for 20 years and can't think of one who hasn't used this book from time to time. Indeed, we joke that you can tell how old a pediatrician is by the color of his (her) Harriet Lane.

I must say that in the past I've had reservations about this book. The drug doses were very often conservative, and the formulary (which is the most frequently used part of it) was rather limited. If you ignore the resuscitation drugs, there are those that would find the Lexmark formulary more useful, especially since it includes much of the information that is in the PDR, such as dosage forms.

The present edition remedies the formulary, happily. Each of the sections is evenly well written, and consise, and the material is useful for the day-to-day work of the pediatric resident. Really, Harriet is indispensable, since it includes all the tables of lab values and growth curves that one uses every day. The present edition is so well written that I can hardly imagine future editions that could be improved in any substantial way. This book hardly needs my endorsement. Nonetheless, I heartily recommend it to any house officer who has a rotation on a pediatric ward.

A Man and Wife's Perspective
I originally purchased this book having my wife and her ever-changing moods in mind. After skimming through the index, I realized that hormone imbalance is not simply a problem for females, but also applied to my life as a middle-aged man. My wife and I both loved this well written book and found a simple and natural way to stay young (and bring back our sex life).

Thanks doc.

hormones...BALANCED
I'm in my late twenties and deal with many of the symptoms described in this book already. I feel more comfortable with myself knowing I am not alone and knowing there is a solution. This book was informative, interesting, understandable and very well written. I have already begun my treatment and am seeing, more importantly feeling the results. It is truly remarkable! Thank you Dr. Schwartz.

Finally the truth in language that I could understand
This is the only book I've read that really explains how losing your hormones in equal to getting old and that the only way to stay young is to fool Mother Nature and put back the hormones into your body. The difference here is that Dr. Schwartz is advocating natural hormones, not the synthetic variety most doctors prescribe which have horrible side-effects. The book also shows the connection between hormones and everyday symptons. It also gives you a balanced view of what alternative and conventional medicine offers. It's very easy to read and well worth the money

Surely A Blessing
I now own 3 copies of Dr. Edward L Klaiber's book-"Hormones and the Mind". 1 book for myself, 1 book for my husband (he's on the road alot), and 1 book for my Family Doctor.

I have been ill for a long time!! Circumstances led me to research 'hormones' as a possible link to my health problems. I went to our City's Public Library and checked out 6 books that contained information pertaining to 'hormones'. As I began the daunting task of reading through these books, Dr. Klaiber's book-"Hormones and the Mind"- kept drawing me back to it's pages, again and again, until finally, his book was the ONLY book I was reading-and paying ALOT of attention to.

I eventually began to tell my husband about this book and many of the 'case histories'-stories that sounded remarkably like MY OWN story!

My husband began to read the book himself, and after trying to call and discuss 'my case' with several of our local 'endocrinologists', decided that he would try to contact Dr. Klaiber, himself.

My husband did reach the office of Dr. Klaiber, and set up an appointment for me to see him at the end of this April.

Women having trouble with PMS, menopause, and/or menstrual problems may find new hope in this book with it's NEW APPROACHES to old problems!

Seeing this doctor changed my life.
I feel incredibly fortunate that I was referred to Dr. Klaiber. A therapist I occasionally saw for depression-related problems said that she had had great success sending women to this endocrinologist....that many of our emotional/fatigue problems, which we fight and tell ourselves are "all in our heads," are in fact hormone imbalances, and that this doctor had spent 30 years investigating the hormone-mind connection. I had just had yet another checkup with my internist at Mass General and had been told that I was perfectly fine, healthy, blah blah blah. I decided to see Dr. Klaiber.

I had never had a doctor's appointment like the one I had with this man. He sat with me for well over an hour, asking detailed questions about my health and family history. He knew after talking to me that my hormone levels would be low, and drew blood. Two weeks later when I received the results, which were appallingly out of whack, I was overwhelmed and relieved and very, very grateful that fate had sent me to him. I had always *known* in my gut that there had to be a real, biological reason for my poor energy levels and persistent depression....now, finally, a doctor had (rather easily) documented WHY. I have been seeing him for three months now. I have never felt better. I am delighted that he wrote this book. I think every OB-GYN doc and every woman over 35 should read it.

The help I've been seeking
This is a marvelous book that explains, in clear language, what hormones do in the brain and why they affect depression, memory, mental abilities, and sexual desire. I found it incredibly helpful on a number of fronts for me personally. At perimenopause many of these problems cropped up and I always thought they had something to do with hormonal changes--Dr. Klaiber helped me realize that my instincts were right. And now I see a variety of ways to use hormones, and not just standard hromone replacement but different types and combinations, along with testosterone, to manage my mood problems and sexual problems. I can raise these issues now with my doctors with some real scientific and medical back-up. The book is really reassuring and helpful and realistic about estrogen and testosterone and it is packed with info and really good case examples. I've tried alternatives and they help a bit but not enough; I'm hopeful that this will make the difference in my life.

A Great Guide for Beginning or Advanced Meditation Students
I had always wanted to know how to meditate. I remember when I was younger, I would sit in my room and try to be at peace, but I just couldn't do it for very long, because I never felt as if I had anything to concentrate on -- my mind would always drift on to something else. Thus, I began to wonder if I would have a reason to continue meditating, as I never had any experiences of inner peace or any of that. Then, a few years ago I was sitting in a chair, moreso because I just wanted to relax than anything else. The room was slightly warm, and suddenly I just felt spontaneously happy -- not the kind of happy like getting a new gift or a large sum of money, it was as if I was ecstatic just being alive. Later, upon reading this book, I found out that, "The quality of joy arising during meditation and providing inspiration for continued practice is unlike the temporary pleasurable feelings that come from having a desire satisfied. Joy arising from meditation is different from the experience of simple pleasure because it arises from feelings of unification of our own body, heart, mind, and consciousness with universal forces greater than ourselves" (pgs 38-39).

Since that experienced opened my eyes to the power of meditation, I have since tried to learn as much about the theory and practice of meditation as I could. As I said before, one of the main problems I had with meditating on my own was that I never felt as if I could sustain a deep meditative state without having something to take my mind off of my everyday problems.

This book solved that problem in a big way. First, I had heard about the chakras before, and I understood that it was necessary to raise your "life energy" (whatever you want to call it) up through your "root chakra" and try to get it to the top chakra "crown chakra". However, I never really understood HOW to do that...until I got this book, that is. Basically, the main thing that I was missing was that you needed to focus on each chakra individually, thus activating the energy within it. As this book says, "As the energy rises through the chakras, each center is activated and the physical, mental, and spiritual qualities of each chakra are experienced" (pg 122). This helped me understand a lot about life, such as how some people can be very creative (they've activated the fifth chakra), or loving (fourth chakra).

This book also gets into some yoga postures, but unfortunately, doesn't describe the steps that go into achieving the pose that the model in the book does. Frankly, if you try to do some of the postures in the book (such as "The Plow", "The Bridge" or "The Spinal Twist", to pick a few) without a good step by step guide you may end up hurting yourself. The same is true for the Kriyas (cleansings), which are described on page 109.

The part of this book that I used the most were probably the two CD's that came with it. Yes, the same meditations are described in detail in the book, but if you are meditating, do you really want to keep opening your eyes to read what the next step is? Therefore, I have found that listening to the authors' voice on the two CD's that are provided greatly enhanced the speed in which I was able to learn the particular meditation. If you don't feel any benefits from this, it's important to be patient, as the book states, "Patience is vital on the path of meditation. There are moments when a person feels like nothing is happening in spite of regular or intense meditative practices. Discouragement is quite common and progress is often slow" (pg 38).

Another chapter that I liked was the chapter dealing with meditation and health. Many people who don't meditate seem to think that it is somehow "New Age" -- even though, as the author states on the back cover of this book, these practices have been "...handed down from teacher to student for thousands of years." Thus, many people don't believe that it actually works (the Holistic Healer episode on the popular TV show "Seinfeld" emphasizes this point). However, if people can understand that meditation (and yoga) are actually good for the body, then they may take it more seriously.

Overall, this book achieved for me what the author set out for it to do, when he said that he hoped readers would "find this information useful in helping to understand the theory and principles of meditation and as a systematic guide to establishing a consistent and deep meditation practice" (pg 11). Without this book, I would still be unable to concentrate long enough to get anything out of meditation, nor would I have understood what I was even meditating for. Now I know, and it has allowed me to live a more peaceful and compassionate life.

Yes, YOU can meditate
This book is a must read for anyone interested in meditation. Beginners and advanced students alike will attain insights into the many benefits of meditation. Divided into five parts, this book is concise, easy to read and put into practice. Part five of this book is dedicated to step by step instruction on how to meditate that is clear and easy to follow.
My thanks to Dr. Chernin for writing a book on meditation that, as a book store manager I can recommend to any of my customers with confidence.

An easily accessed encyclopedia of basic information
Illegal Drugs: A Complete Guide To Their History, Chemistry, Use And Abuse by Dr. Paul M. Gahlinger (Professor of Medicine, University of Utah) is a comprehensive, easily accessed encyclopedia of basic information surveying the vast variety of addictive, incapacitating, and/or deadly chemicals that have plagued human societies. From opiates to amphetamines, anti-drug laws and drug testing to legal psychoactive drugs such as alcohol, Illegal Drugs provides a wealth of information in a direct and easy-to-look-up matter, further aided by the extensive index. Written in terms the non-specialist general reader can easily understand Illegal Drugs is as complete and thorough a reference as one can find without consulting college-level textbooks or professional medical references. Highly recommended for personal, professional, academic, health agency, and community library pharmaceutical reference collections.

Accurate, But Sometimes a Little Annoying
I'm not going to throw rocks at this book, because there is an incredible dearth of good information on this subject, and in the information in this book is excellent. But when Gahlinger says "complete," he is not kidding. This is a great resource for the sophisticated student of the subject, with history, sociology and legal issues as well as medical info, and lots of coverage of obscure drugs. For people whose interest in the subject which is either more casual or practical (e.g. "Is this stuff dangerous?" or "What's my kid getting into?") the book may be a little overwhelming.

I cannot stress how thoroughly superior this book is to Andrew Weil's "From Chocolate to Morphine."

Accurate, No-nonsense Information
In the vein of Andrew Weil and Winifred Rosen's From Chocolate to Morphine, Gahlinger's Illegal Drugs exemplifies a complete, 'safety-first' approach to discussing illicit drugs and drug use in this country. Gahlinger goes beyond simply explaining the effects of various drugs on the body and mind; he explores the non-physical -but equally important- aspects of drug use/abuse, including extensive information on the legal consequences of involvement with drugs, drug testing in the workplace, economics of the drug trade, and the origins of U.S. drug policy. Perhaps most outstanding aspect of Gahlinger's book is his thorough, no-nonsense instructions for detecting a drug overdose and seeking efficient, timely medical care for the victim- knowledge that could, one day, be the deciding factor between the death or recovery of a friend or loved one.
