Drumming - and much more
I love this book. There are a number of brief papers which discuss important ideas and concepts, but my favorites are the little poems, or aphorisms. Maybe two or three to a page, they conjure up images, pose questions or set in motion trains of thought that really get to the heart of why the creative arts are so important to our life, health and general well-being.
This is a book that can be read over and over again - each time revealing something new.

Inspirational
This book is about more than just drumming. It shows how you can use music to help yourself and those round you. Diamond's approach is a unique, and combines philosophy with psychology and numerous other modalities. The writing ranges from the philosophical to practical suggestions and it has been a great inspiration to me in using music to enhance my life. One wonderful aspect to his approach is that anybody can do it--it's all about intention, not technique.

The Way of the Pulse. Drumming with Spirit
Reading this book opened up the world of music and showed me a way to become free from the tyranny of the beat, the "must be right" of conservatory training.

A sceptic is now a convert
I am a lay person always on the lookout for greater understanding of health issues and in particular how it is that physicians go about figuring out what is wrong with us. I guess it's almost like a hobby for me. Anyhow, when I saw the reviews for Dr. Blumer's book, I must admit I was sceptical. I mean...five stars each time...come on now. But my scepticism is now gone. The accolades are deserved. This is a great book. It is not only informative, but is very funny. Who would have a thought a doctor could be this amusing and informative all at once? Anyhow, I would heartily endorse What Your Doctor Really Thinks. ...

My mother recommended it!
It is not often that my mother and I have common interests in literature, but on this occasion we surely do. She is seventy and I'm forty, yet we both found this book not only informative, but highly entertaining. We both would highly recommend it.

Now the secrets out...and I'm sure glad
I came across this book at my local library and what an eye opener! I had no idea that there were so many "behind the scenes" things going on in my doctor's office. Like that he was secretly looking things up in his text books when I was in the examining room. Or that I may have been referred to him, not because he was the best doctor, but rather because he was friends with my family physician. Geesh! I loved finding out these hidden secrets. I bet there isn't a person around that wouldn't find this book both entertaining and informative.

Your Genetic Destiny
Written in concise yet vibrant language by an eminent geneticist, this volume offers a broad approach for the general public interested in useful and practical genetic information and advice. Many clinicians may also find it to be a useful resource in their busy clinical work. A brief introduction to genetic principles leads into succinct, informative reviews of genetic aspects and risks of a host of medical conditions, such as obesity, cancer, mood disorders, Attention Deficit Disorder, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and longevity. The concluding chapters on "Avoidance and Prevention of Genetic Disorders" will appeal to those who wish to be genetically informed when making decisions about their own their lives or life styles.

An excellent and informative guide to the latest findings
This informed family health guide discusses the health implications of genetic disorders in a family history, drawing on the latest research and findings to discuss genetic predispositions to common ailments, tests available for identification, and when to seek genetic counseling. Your Genetic Destiny is an excellent and informative guide to the latest findings about how genetics influence health.

Your Genetic Destiny
"Your Genetic Destiny," by Dr. Aubrey Milunsky, is a book for those concerned about their own genetic health and the health of children that they might have. Dr. Milunsky is an international expert on human genetics and genetic counseling and it shows in this authoritative and interesting book. Dr. Milunsky explains the inheritance patterns of genetic traits and then talks about what to look for in your own family tree in order to be aware of future health problems. He covers the complete gamut of genetic diseases, including mental illness, heart disease, obesity, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. He makes complex subjects easy to understand and presents the readers with the choices available today. I think that this book is not just for those contemplating having children, but for the general reader as well. We are beginning the century of human genetics and we all should be aware of the issues. As a geneticist (the author of a genetics textbook in its seventh edition), this is exactly the book that I would have written for the general public. In fact, after reading Dr. Milunsky's book, I have put my own plans for a similar book on the shelf-permanently. I highly recommend this readable, authoritative book to all.

This book is a great help .
This book was very helpful to me in being an informed health care consumer for my child. I especially found the detailed medication section helpful. My son's asthma had progressed from being mild to moderate and the thorough review of current medication options was very helpful. I purchased the book based on the fact that a pulmonary nurse clinician had recommended it. I am a nurse practicioner in women's health and value the recommendation from another practicioner who is involved in educating her patients regarding their conditon. This book really helped me in making informed decisions along with my son's pediatrician.

A MUST for all asthmatics and their families.
As a lifelong asthmatic, I strongly recommend The Asthma Sourcebook. It is the most informative and readable asthma book on the market today. It helped me and should be required reading for all asthmatics and their families.

Because it's the best asthma book I've read, I've recommende
I work as a nurse clinician specializing in pulmonary medicine. I also have asthma. I've read many books, articles, etc. on asthma and this book is by far the most informative (not to mention the most updated) asthma book I have read. I have found it very helpful both personally and professionally. I have recommended/bought this book for others with this disease. I know I'm too late to be a "winner", that's okay, my reason for writing was to "tell it like it is"

So you listened to the doctors and public-health professionals and Nike commercials, and you believe it's a good thing that you're still exercising and playing sports well into your fourth or fifth or even sixth decade of life. You know all about the problems that accrue with inactivity: a weak heart, clogged arteries, and atrophied muscle tissue and bone mass, all of it adding up to a precipitous decline in physical abilities.

But maybe you weren't expecting the problems that accrue with activity: the wear and tear on your knees, pain in the arches of your feet, irritated bursa in your shoulders, inflamed nerves in your back.

Athletic Forever is as good a guidebook as there is for the men and women who plan to take their jockstraps, jog bras, knee braces, and orthotic shoe inserts to the grave with them. It spans the gap between layman's language and that used by medical professionals--pointing out, for example, why terms like "slipped disc" aren't really accurate, and why "herniated disc" better describes the injury.

The book's organization allows you to jump in wherever your interest takes you. If you want to know more about a specific problem--shoulder, knee, ankle--you can go straight to that chapter. It would be a shame, though, for anyone interested in lifelong health and fitness to skip the opening chapters. These provide not only the scary facts about how an untrained body degenerates through the decades, but also how a trained body literally beats the aging process. --Lou Schuler

I'm the author: Here's why this book's great.
"Athletic Forever" provides information on getting into shape without getting injured. It offers nutritional guidance and provides an easy-to-understand overview of the principles of scientific training -- the very guidelines used by professional coaches and athletes for attaining peak fitness. Should you get injured in the course of pursuing sports and recreation, "Athletic Forever" will get you back in the game fast: simply refer to the back of the book where you'll find a comprehensive guide to sports injuries -- how to recognize them and what to do to overcome them. This is a no-nonsense, easy-to-understand book, which I co-authored with some of the most prominent sports physicians in the US.

Excellent
Athletic Forever is an excellent health reference book because it doesn't simplify things, as so many new "fitness plans" do. Dr. Jobe & his colleagues simply present good factual information and excellent tips to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle. I found the back section of exercises particularly useful and authoritative.

A great book for all athletes and health professionals!
It was a great pleasure to read and learn from "Athletic Forever. The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic Plan for Lifetime Fitness." Dr. Frank Jobe et al have taken on an interesting, contemporary subject in a most timely manner. The glowing forwards from Tommy Lasorda and Magic Johnson illustrate the tremndous respect that professional sports celebrities have for Dr. Jobe and "Athletic Forever." The text is formatted in a logical, concise manner and explores anatomy, injuries and treatment protocol without getting bogged down in needless detail. The KJ facts and closeups clearly add a new dimension to the body of knowlege regarding lifetime fitness. I especially enjoyed the insights with regards to diagnosing the cause of back pain. It is very refreshing to hear from the experts that high tech and costly imaging methods such as MRI's are in many cases unrelated to a patient's back pain. The section on stregthening and flexibility exercises is presented in a straight forward manner yet provides exceedingly valuable information in a refreshingly "low tech" appearance. Perhaps it is beyond the scope of the text, but it may have been useful to discuss 1 or 2 of the Kerlan-Jobe innovations in the field of sports medicine (For example, I would have been extremely interested in the story of Tommy John and the procedures and rehabilitation used in the "rebuilding of his pitcher's arm.") I would highly reccomend "Athletic Forever" to all athletes and health professionals!

Bridges for Healing : Intregrating Family Therapy and Psychopharmacology

Bridges for Healing
This book has given me new insight into and appreciation of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. Dr. Resnikoff's model promotes flexibility and balance in the use of medication and therapy: His model demonstrates how crucial it is for the therapist to observe and listen to client(s) initially, and as therapy proceeds. The examples that Resnikoff offers should help individuals and especially therapists in training learn the value and importance of integrating therapy and psychopharmacology.

Psychology Meets Biology
As a non-professional in family therapy, it took me a couple of chapters to fully understand Dr. Resnikoff's model. My bias against using drugs in therapy was also a hurdle I needed to overcome in appreciating Resnikoff's thesis which is that therapists need to be less dogmatic and adopt a kind of post-modern approach to therapy. Rather than dismissing one approach or school of thought for another, the author has developed a multi-dimensional model incorporating "talk therapy" and "drug therapy" in the treatment of patients. At the end of the day, Resnikoff's inclusivity and open-mindedness won me over where I understood and fully appreciated his complex approach. The "read" gets good too when he introduces case studies and examples from his own life to the text. Although not a simple book for a non-professional in psychotherapy, I found the book very rewarding. I find myself using Resnikoff's model as I go through life.

Bridges for healing
I found this book entertaining and instructive concerning the different techniques used by the author to treat family problems. I particularly enjoyed his "real-life" case examples.

Fascinating story of a new religion
"CaoDai: Faith of Unity," by Hum Dac Bui with Ngasha Beck, is a nonfiction study of the CaoDai religion, which was founded in Vietnam in the 1920s. A minibio at the end of the book notes that author Hum Dac Bui was born in Vietnam and came to the U.S. in 1975.

I found this book absolutely fascinating. It discusses many aspects of the CaoDai faith: founding, ecclesiastic structure, cosmology, meditation practices, its suppression under the French colonial regime, the components of the altar, etc. Particularly interesting is the exploration of CaoDai's relationship to other faith traditions, like Christianity, Taoism, Unitarian Universalism, and more. Also intriguing is the discussion of French author Victor Hugo, who is considered a CaoDai saint.

The book stresses that "CaoDai is a thriving, growing, ever expanding theology." The tone throughout is respectful of religious diversity and supportive of interfaith harmony. CaoDai is discussed within the context of a broader interfaith movement.

The book also includes a useful glossary. Overall, a really intriguing look at a compelling modern religion.

A good resource....
One of the few works in English that explores this amazing spiritual tradition. Definately worth the price!

an apology for Cao Dai
This book is a nearly-proselytizing apology for the Cao Dai religion, popular in southern Vietnam. Cao Dai is a fascinating religion, and this is one evidence of it. It includes a conversation between the spirit of Victor Hugo and a Cao Dai leader in 1930, illustrations of symbolic hand gestures and other symbols, common prayers and vows, and Hum Dac Bui's presentation of Cao Dai philosophy. In short, it is an incredible primary source. But if you want an outside perspective, look elsewhere. I've heard that Victor Oliver's book "Caodai Spiritism" is good, but I haven't read it. Joyce Werner's "Peasant Politics and Religious Sectarianism" is a Yale doctoral thesis, an account of the spread and popularity of Cao Dai. Graham Greene considered converting to Cao Dai but became disillusioned; he gives his interesting, humorous perspective in "The Quiet American," which I recommend for literary reasons as well.

A great historical survey of Prohibition in Chesapeake Bay.
In Chesapeake Rumrunners Of The Roaring Twenties, Eric Mills tells the story of Prohibition in Chesapeake Bay country with a memorable cast the includes watermen and steamer captains, mob racketeers, and "legitimate" businessmen who took advantage of a nation's thirst for alcohol to make their fortunes smuggling booze into the country. The saga also had Billy Sunday and an army of temperance crusaders campaigning to encourage Prohibition, federal agents and Coast Guardsmen burdened with the impossible task of holding back the tide of alcohol from coming into the country. In a maze of Bay waters, smuggler boats played a key role in the illicit traffic, and were built for speed and the ability to out-maneuver the law while being disguised as ordinary work boats. Chesapeake Rumrunners Of The Roaring Twenties is a vivid, highly recommended history drawing on news reports, government records, and local lore to recreate an incredible time where some men sought to change human nature and before through the force of an unpopular law, and others sought to make their fortunes in defiance of that same law.

A Lively Jaunt Through a Bygone Era
This fast-paced, readable chronicle of an almost forgotten era in American history fills a longstanding void. The fact that it is immensely entertaining, as well as informative, makes it doubly valuable. It provides a thorough, understandable history of the social forces at play in the nation which led to the passage of the 18th Amendment and to the inevitability of its Repeal.

The author has done it again with this fine companion to his superb CHESAPEAKE BAY IN THE CIVIL WAR. Bravo, Eric Mills!

Another Splendid Effort By Mills
Eric Mills has mastered the rare ability to bring back the past through skillful and imaginative writing. A terrific book.

This book is a gift.
This book resonated with me very strongly. It answered so many of my questions about why I act the way I do. It is truly the most useful self-help book I've encountered. Anyone who is honestly looking for healthy ways of looking at life and relationships has found a big chunk of answers.

The truth at last
This book is for those willing to open their minds to the possibility that happiness or the lack of it is up to them. It speaks clearly and openly about our faults in relationships and how to rid ourself of behaviors that result in our own unhappiness and lack of love.
It requires a very open mind. I found it to be accurate in my life. The reasons for emptiness and fear are right on the money. The Getting and Protecting Behaviors are also correct.
Manipulation, clinging, lying, extracting what you need from others that result in temporary feelings of joy but ultimately result in feeling empty are all parts of what is wrong with how we look at what a relationship is.
I am excited about what I read.

Common-sense book about Real Love
Some reader wrote a strange review of this book, because it hasn't anything thing to do with that person's "Buddhism, saints or sages". Refreshingly, Dr. Baer steers well clear of that stuff - it isn't mentioned or used even once.

This is an extremely common-sense, straightforward, down-to-earth book about what love is and is not; how Real Love "looks" in various relationships; how and why people keep themselves from having it; why people do the crazy stuff they do (that we read about in the papers, experience in our own lives, etc.) because of its lack; and how you and I can go about finding it.

The answer is hard and not to be avoided, but at the same time, simple and easy: We have to start telling the truth about ourselves (ceasing to hide our mistakes, and acknowledging our shortcomings with others) so that others will have a chance to see & accept us as we really are, and so we can sooner or later find the people who will.

I've been reading relationship books for a couple decades now, and though I may not think all of Dr. Baer's answers and methods are perfect, this is the clearest, most profound and useful explanation and discussion of Real Love I have ever come across.
