User-Friendly and Empowering Book of Healing
I discovered this book as it was part of my curriculum in Holistic Massage Therapy School. But it is applicable to anyone who is looking to learn about holistic health self-care. Based on the Chinese 5-Element theory, Staying Healthy With The Seasons explores the particular energies, meridians, organs, moods, strongpoints and pitfalls of each season. It is easy to read, and pick and choose which ideas you like and would like to incorporate into new habits to try. There are so many ideas for each season, ranging from dietary cleansing, to mental patterns, to holistic bodywork recommended for the season, that you are bound to find some ideas that really appeal to you where you are now, and others you may like to try later.

This book really helped me to grow in ways I hadn't expected, and to release some difficulties and toxins I'd been holding onto on an emotional as well as physical level for several years. I felt very empowered using it to cleanse and refresh myself, inside and out!

Tried and true
This book is fabulous! I've done the elimination cleanse twice to astounding results. I'm about to do it again. It takes effort and about a month, but it's worth it for the absolute well-being you feel as a result. I've recommended this book to many people and all of them sing its praises! You will too!

Understanding Chinese Elements for Body Health All Year
I have owned and read this book for well over fifteen years. It is the first book I consult when self diagnosing any ill health for myself, family and friends. It had accidently fallen behind my other health books on my book shelf and I truly panicked. My very first thought was where can I get another copy. Having searched the entire shelf and joyfully locating it once more, I was determined to order another for back-up. It is the only book I have ever read that succinctly and clearly explains the five elements in the body, how they each are prominent in their own season and how best to cure any ailment during each season. Wisdom of the ages for our modern era.

If you have melanoma, you need to read this book
I was diagnosed with melanoma in June, and have been on a search for responsible information ever since. This book is packed full with exactly the information I needed to know. It neither talks down to me nor tries to impress me with its medical jargon. It has real, solid, practical information and statistics that are easy to understand. This is a wonderful tool to use in your arsenal against this nasty, vicious disease. Recommended highly, without reservation, for anyone with melanoma or for the family or friends of those who have it. Knowledge is power.

Life-Saving Information for 1 in 70 People!
If caught in time, curing skin cancer is simple. If not caught soon enough, skin cancer is usually fatal. At the same time, skin cancer's prevalence is rapidly increasing. Within our lifetimes, it may well be the major source of deaths from cancer . . . unless we all become more vigilant.

This book will take you to the level of understanding of skin cancer that dermatologists have, but in a way that a nonscientific person can understand. You will benefit from many diagrams and color plates that will help you decide if a mole or abnormality on the skin needs a biopsy to test for cancer. You can use this information to check yourself, your loved ones, and people you see more casually. You may well save a life in the process! This is like learning CPR.

Most skin cancer is thought to be caused by occasional overexposure to the sun before age 19. So even if you have been careful since 19, you may still get it. Those who have skin cancer once also have an increased likelihood of a recurrence.

There are many misunderstandings about what is needed to be done now, including the thought that using sun block will solve the problem of future risk. That's not true. Most sun blocks only stop the UV B rays. UV A rays (which are found in tanning salons) are also considered a probable cause of DNA mutations in the skin that cause skin cancer. In addition, the damage you experienced with a bad sunburn when you were 16 cannot be undone by care now. 80 percent of lifetime exposure to the sun occurs before age 19 for most people. Some people have a genetic predisposition, and that is explained as well.

You will find out a lot about treatments, and the prognosis for recovery, as well as the latest research.

I picked up this book because weird growths started appearing on my skin around age 50. I became a frequent visitor to my dermatologist, who happily burned off most of these. But I felt a lot of anxiety until the biopsies told me they were benign. I think this information will help me feel more comfortable with my growths, and better inform me about when I need to go see my outstanding dermatologist, Dr. Peter Bendetson.

One of the things you will learn is that the flat moles near the surface are the ones most likely to turn into cancer. So when they start changing in asymmetric, and colorful ways, get thee to the dermatologist. I emphasize that because the book is filled with stories about general practitioners pooh-poohing the significance of skin abnormalities that turned out to be cancer. You cannot tell what a discoloration or growth is for sure without a biopsy. A busy general practitioner may often be unlikely to want to take one and treat you until after you have been shown to have skin cancer. By the way, the problem with skin cancer is that it spreads throughout the body when too deeply established. Once it is past the skin, it becomes hard to stop. Take precautions, watch out, and get early treatment!

After you read and apply this outstanding book, I suggest that you think about what other areas of your mental and physical health you need to be monitor and attend to more consistently. Do you eat a healthy diet? Do you drink enough water? Do you get enough exercise? Do you feel good around other people? Do you have loving relationships in your life? Do you have an annual physical examination?

Have the quality of life you deserve!

What You Really Need To Know About Moles and Melanoma

Informative Essays about America's Bloodiest Day of Battle
Just like previous reviewers, I agree that this book is a fine addition to the on-going series about the Military Campaigns of the Civil War. This installment about the Battle of Antietam is particularly strong because of the quality of scholarship included and the distinguished group of historians that Gallagher gathered for this edition.

Each author includes an interesting essay that details a specific aspect of the battle. Some examples of topics that are covered include: the supply challenge the Confederacy faced, how new Union recruits reacted to the carnage of Antietam, the role Confederate artillery played, and why McClellan failed to pursue Lee after the battle. I found that every essay presented a compelling argument and really offer the reader a detailed analysis that you will not find in other books about the battle.

As always, this type of book is not aimed at telling the history of what happened at Antietam. If you are looking for a general narrative of the battle - this is not the right book. On the other hand, it is designed for those who are somewhat familiar with the battle and are looking for the most current research from a find group of historians. I highly recommend the book for people who fall into this category. It will greatly enhance your understanding of key aspects that affected the battle which has been the bloodiest day in US military history.

Outstanding information and viewpoints of Antietam!
Similar to past works of Gallagher's, this book contains invididual chapters written by popular Civil War historians keying in on battle concerns, myths, strategies and political concepts during the campaign. I really enjoyed reading William Blair's chapter on how Marylanders caught in the middle of political unrest viewed the campaign and Lee's invasion. Brooks Simpson's chapter on how the Army of the Potomac was McClellan's bodyguard according to Lincoln really made me understand the political frustrations the Lincoln party had in regards to McClellan's slow moving and cautious approach to battle. Keith Bohannon's view on Confederate logistical problems was very informative and really brought forth information as to Lee's reasons for invading the north and also his retreat.

These chapters are just some of the great amount of information brought together in a very fine book. I would recommend this book to someone who has already read a book on the battle itself before reading this one. This book contains some fighting information but isn't one for coverage on the entire battle. It is one for understanding political unrest, commander motivations, strategies and little unknown and sometimes unclear myths that surround the entire campaign in September 1862. 5 STARS!!!

Gallagher has done it again! A great addition to the series!
Once again, Gary W. Gallagher has compiled a wonderful collection of essays in this latest volume of the Military Campaigns of the Civil War Series. Each chapter or essay focuses on a different aspect of the campaign and is written by a different author. This allows for a new perspective on the campaign with each chapter. Among the topics covered by the various essayists are Confederate perception of Antietam as a victory or defeat, Confederate logistics, Confederate artillery, the use of the Antietam battlefield as a classroom for military leaders in the 20th century, the impact of new recruits on the Army of Potomac's effectiveness, and the experiences of individual units.

All of the essays are well-written and contain wonderful insights into their selected aspects of the campaign. Due to the focus of the series on military events, other important issues related to Antietam are only briefly mentioned. Most notably, issues related to emancipation and foreign intervention are mentioned in passing. This, however, is a result of the decision by the editor and the press (University of North Carolina Press) to focus on military aspects. Despite this weakness, I would highly recommend this and all other books in the Military Campaigns of the Civil War series to anyone with an interest in the Civil War.

Author's book summary
So many times have I worked on a dying patient frantically trying to breathe life into a lifeless body. And many times have I questioned myself, "Why don't you give up?" The title of my memoir, "By All Means, Resuscitate," says, "no matter the consequences or the effort required, keep my life going with the caveat: that my intellectual capacity not be impaired." Though my life has not always been happy, it has been fascinating. Some of the high points of my story are:
the closing of a circle beginning with the journey of my grandfather from Europe and my parents to the U.S. and my eventual "aliyah" to Israel.
my Harvard Medical School education -- as the fourth brother in the family to be an M.D.
my evolution from a 'double-talking physician hiding fatal cancer diagnoses from patients to a proponent of assisted suicide to the terminally ill (with a deep bow of humility to the occasional terminal prognosis that mysteriously reverses itself.)
my courtship of my wife by playing duets, she on the violin, I, on the cello.
my delight in my family -- two daughters (one now an M.D.) and a son (now a micro-biologist) and my anguish in not being able to save my other beautiful daughter, a manic-depressive, from suicide.
my encouragement of -- and fear about -- my wife's decision to heal her niece by donating a kidney to her.
my fights against anti-Semitism and segregation in my small Pennsylvania town.
the efforts of my wife and myself to save Russian Jews.
our adaptation to life in Israel, including my often frustrating, sometimes comic, struggles to learn Hebrew, and our lives, and those of our children and grandchildren during the Gulf War -- and beyond ...

A Rich and Rewarding Read!
In this fascinating memoir, Dr. David Chamovitz comes across as a Renaissance man of many passions: medicine, music (he plays a mellow cello), family, Judaism, civil rights, Israel. Rescuer of many Russian Jews and compassionate cardiologist to countless patients in the U.S. and Israel, he poignantly relates how he could not save his own beautiful, manic-depressivedaughter from suicide. The author has been frank in revealing his personality, including even a couple of "warts." But that's what makes him, as a characterin his story, so appealing. I enjoy his humor, I empathize with his anguish, andI understand his rages. I was really impressed by the spirituality of a self-proclaimed "rationalist" that comes through in his book. This is a rich and rewarding read.

A TRUE PAGE-TURNER
Every moment of leisure that I have, I have been reading this wonderful book and have finally finished it, although like every other page turner that I have read, I did not want it to end! I vote for a sequel.

A terrific book
"That was terrific!" While not what you would expect to hear after a colonoscopy, these were the first words out of my husband's mouth as he woke up from this somewhat inconvenient procedure a few weeks ago, which he and I had postponed as long as possible. Howls of laughter burst forth from the nurses and others present in the recovery room. Nonetheless, the words revealed my husband's shock and delight that the dreaded procedure began and ended so imperceptibly and so painlessly.

"That was terrific!" would also be my assessment of this little book. While there is nothing sexy about the prospect of reading a book about cancer, my middle age, my weight, my family history, and personal medical history nearly demanded that I inform myself. The previous reviews for amazon.com have focused repeatedly on Dr. Adrouny's gift for making a boring, technical, and frightening subject accessible to the non-medical public through very readable text, references, and glossary, as well as lucid diagrams. I would echo all of those comments nearly verbatim. Anyone in the field knows that teaching science to non-science majors is more difficult than teaching it to those committed to the subject. You have to engage them first, and then inform them. Dr. Adrouny succeeds brilliantly in his chapters such as "Who Gets Colon Cancer and Why," "The 'Look'...," "The 'Feel'...," the stages, the prognosis, the treatment, prevention and future of colon cancer.

For me, however, Dr. Adrouny's greater gift is the art of gentle persuasion. He informs but does not preach. Who wants to go to the doctor and be ordered to go and lose 30 pounds? My husband was spurred to action by Dr. Adrouny, and now it's my turn. My colonoscopy is in two months. When will you sign up? (As he points out, there is usually a wait.) Read the book while you are waiting. Meantime, I am wondering if perhaps Dr. Adrouny's next book should be, "Understanding Extra Pounds."

Understanding of Colon Cancer in Plain English
Richard Adrouny, MD is a personal friend of mine but I am not a patient of his nor a physician nor do I have any medical training. However, I am approaching 60. I do get annual checkups and prostate exams and I do worry about cancer.
Understanding Colon Cancer is as good a book on a critical medical issue as any lay reader could ever hope to find. Dr. Adrouny writes very fully and specifically about colorectal cancer, its development, theories regarding its prevention, and current treatment interventions. What makes his writing so valuable to cancer patients and others of us without medical training is its accessibility. He continuously offers clear, direct and perfectly understandable explanations so that the interested reader can truly grasp the meaning of necessary medical terms and their significance. When he mentions sigmoidoscopy he explains that the procedure is an examination of the inner rectum and lower colon. When he refers to adenomatous polyps he specifies that a polyp is a growth from a mucous membrane and an adenoma is a benign growth from a glandular tissue. Continuously, he shares with us state of the art medical understanding in terms non-physicians can grasp. And in the course of treatment for a potentially life-threatening disease understanding is comfort.
Colorectal cancer screening as an annual event isn't a high priority for most men or women. When Dr. Adrouny explains that 15% of all cancers can be detected by a simple digital rectal examination, the momentary inconvenience of this act of diligence seems a small price to pay confirming our health status. Similarly, fecal occult blood testing, barium enema, and endoscopy all offer evaluations that could spare us suffering and save our lives.
While reading this book I wondered if Dr. Adrouny didn't perhaps edit his own writing by asking himself "So what?" every paragraph or so and then took the time to make clear the importance of his points to his general audience.
While reading this book, I could imagine a colon cancer patient returning home after seeing his own oncologist and grabbing for Dr. Adrouny's book by way of understanding his own physician comments.

An Excellent Guide for Those of Us Who Are Not Physicians
Adrouny does a great job explaining the ABC's of colon cancer.

This short--less than 150 pages--guide to colon cancer is accessible to those of us who are not physicians or familiar with healthcare terms. Adrouny patiently walks us through the basics of colon cancer: Who Gets Colon Cancer (men and women, too!); the look (signs) and feel (symptoms) of the disease; and the treatments and prevention.

This book is an absolute must for anyone who has colon cancer or anyone who is close to someone with the disease. The book also provides easy to read charts and drawings that I found very helpful.

This book is in its third printing. If your used books are from the first printing there are additional facts in the next two not presened in the first one.

A Very Important Book
I wish every doctor in America who treats children could read this book. Dr. Haber battles conventional wisdom and comes out on top. The over-prescribing of drugs and faulty diagnosis of ADHD has turned into a national epidemic. "The Great Misdiagnosis" makes an urgent call for rationality.

Outstanding New Book
Controversial and thought provoking, Dr. Haber has challenged my long-held beliefs on ADHD and forced me re-examine the conventional wisdom. A very important book.

this is one of the voices of series best
this book tells the story of the battle in the soilders view through their letters and reports. The letters start off cheerfully with the Confederates marching through Frederick, MD followed by the Union army all accounts say things about how though they might be cheery now they know a large battle will soon happen. Then Sharpsburg becomes the meeting place of the two mighty armies and the soilders on both sides soon realize the great disaster they have front seat tickets to and through their letters they put you onto the battle field. this book is amazing

Horror of War, Up Close and Personal
The books of this Time Life series are very important to anyone who wants to learn about the Civil War. The first series, the gray set, is a good starter, but this set is a great next step.

This particular volume is very moving and comsuming. I found it hard to leave, and I also found it somewhat haunting. Fortunately, I've been to Antietam many times, and know the ground pretty well, but the men's words change the ground into a hallowed field that will always be looked at differently.

There is in this book a cold matter-of-factness in the letters and writings of the participants that is unsettling. Death and human destruction are so common, that it matters not to the writer. To losely quote General W. T. Sherman, "I look at the lose of a few thousand men as a morning dash".

To read this book is to go back in time, to live as they did, and to feel what they felt. The editors did a fine job of material selection. Can not imporve on the contents at all. Well done to all.

When you read the book (and you better), try to prepare yourself for the final 2 pages, the article from the New York Times newspaper. Words like this do not come often in this life, and to miss these would be a loss. Events such as these deserve to be memoralized and remembered, or we are "doomed to relive them". A stunning book for all.

Delving into the past
In working with Time-Life to produce this work, I ran across many personal accounts that were previosuly unpublished. To see their inclusion in this book was gratifying in that the past would not be left to gather dust on some old archival shelf.

Many accounts in our regimental files at the battlefield contained personal letters and photos from families across the country. The editiors of Time-Life compiled many of those items into an easy to read format, spelling out the specifics of attack across the once feritle farmland now known as Antietam National Battlefield.

The horrors of battle are not easy to grasp, but by including personal letters, maps, photos, and the Hope paintings the reader gets a brief look into what life was like on 17 September 1862.

Whether or not you can get to the battlefield pick up this book. It's accounts are moving, and the impact of what happened will flow from the pages as you begin your journey into the Maryland Campaign of 1862.

This book is a must for any historian or student of the Civil War.

blueprints in psychiatry (blue prints series)
very short and concise book for psychiatry. covers all the high yield material for the boards.has got some good tables. the best thing about this book is it is just about 96 pages and makes it very easy to read.for step2 and step3 psychiatry this book will be of great help.

a great resource
I read this book the day before starting my 3rd year psychiatry clerkship. It was amazing and made my life so much easier. You can easily read this book in an afternoon and get a great view of psychiatry as a whole. Its strength is its brevity and readability, while not sacrificing much in the way of actual content. A great book for medical students.

Excellent review for wards and Step 2
This book helped me do quite well on Step 2. It is both concise and relevant. It covers the essentials with review-level depth; if you're looking for a core textbook, this ain't it. Its only drawback is the price per page ratio.

I"m shocked!..shocked!...Rick, there's gambling going on....
The subtitle provides more than a clue. Political outsiders wind up in the House of Representatives and then they are under tremendous pressure to conform, to play the game, to scratch backs and make deals. As a reader, I'm reminded of that scene in Casablanca: I"m shocked!..shocked! Rick...there is gambling going on in this place!
Tom Cogburn's an MD who goes to congress as one in a group of spirited, idealistic conservatives, hatched and spoon-fed upon Reagan era ideas about the expenditure of taxpayer money. Think of the David Stockman budget cuts and government internal clashes and shutdowns in the 1980s. This book updates us, brings us to a close-up of the 90s budget struggles. Clinton's the president and the economy is buoyed up by a stock market boom cycle. The U.S. is experiencing the benefits of a bankrupt Soviet Union, the Democrats are crowing about something called a "peace dividend", and there is large-scale military downsizing. Meanwhile, Republican ideologues are hard at work downsizing the domestic services bureaucracy. A classic liberal vs. conservative fiscal battle is taking place. Cogburn's culminating event is the 1997 budget battle between President Bill Clinton and the Republicans led by Newt Gingrich and a vast team of bright-eyed spending conservatives united in the single purpose of saying no to spending increases. The spending conservatives are the children of the "Reagan Revolution" and they've all taken the primary oath of self-imposed term limits.
During one of the longest and most protracted government shutdowns, Republican veteran Bob Dole says enough is enough! Dole chastizes his idealistic Republican confreres for what appears to be a prima donna obstinacy. Cogburn is incensed, chastizing old guard senators like Dole for "caving in" at the critical moment. If they'd held out, he believes, the budget cutters would have triumphed.
One problem with the book is that Cogburn sees term limits as the panacea for most of the governmental ills. I'm not sure that's true. Term limits do not account for that rare professional politician-statesman (statesperson?) who is prepared to sacrifice popularity for principle. On that score, Dr. Cogburn certainly practiced what he preached, and kept his word to return to medical practice after significant frustrating political defeats in the House of Representatives.
Another problem, for me, is that Cogburn feels that the only way to cut spending in government is through the budget process. Though the budget process is a significant sure way of cutting expenses, it often disguises underlying porkbarrel manipulations and tacked on amendments often made by staffers without knowlege or consent of the member.
I've always felt that many congress members have too little understanding and interest in the operational habits of government agencies. Here's the money, they say, spend it. And the agencies do, knowing that if they don't, their budgets will be cut when the next budget is processed. Many government bureaucrats do not want to buck the system, the stead flow of power, money, and paper, by passing cost-cutting suggestions upward to their bosses. Though middle-level government operations managers give lip service to cost cutting during meetings with underlings, public employees know that most of it is for show and self-promotion purposes, very much like the already forgotten Gore Campaign to Reform Government, when he was vice-president.

In addition to Cogburn's primary themes, there's a lot of innuendo and insider gossip, and some interesting short digressions into religion, medicine, and teen sex. This is an entertaining and informative book for John Q. Public. For a much deeper probe of term limits and similar topics, I would recommend RESTORATION, by columnist George F. Will. But then Will is a professional writer, whereas Cogburn's book is ghosted by John Hart, who lends it a sprightly writing style.

Enlightening...and sickening
Dr. Coburn is armed to the teeth with facts, figures, and behind the scenes stories that the main stream press avoids or ignores. While it would be easy to become disillusioned with the entire political process after this candid view of Washington, he actually projects a tone that is surprisingly optimistic. The author is the complete opposite of a partisan hack. He goes after Democrats and Republicans alike. He is equally supportive of those few principled politicians in both parties. Dr. Coburn is truly a patriotic American and this book should be required reading for virtually EVERY high school civics class and college political science class. It would trigger a new American revolution. Don't miss this book.

True Conservative
In Breach Of Trust, Tom Coburn recounts some of his experiences as a 3 term US congressman. His efforts to help limit the runaway spending in Washington put him at odds with his own party and with the Washington mindset - where winning elections is the priority of both parties, and responsible policy is the casualty. A major theme is that term limits would be a good method to end careerist politics and permit individual members to vote their conscience. He tells of specific instances where party leaders compromise the best interests of America to present an electable image in the respective home districts. His insights ring true. Dr. Coburn does not pretend to be perfect, and freely admits his own mistakes. His honesty, tenacity, and candor are examples we all should aspire to. I recommend this good book to all fiscal conservatives and anyone interested in the way that Washington works - and why it usually fails.
