Our baby
This book is excellent. It is well written and illustrated.
Easy to follow instructions and covers all subjects that new moms might be concerned about.
I have not even delived my baby yet and this is the book I have turned to the most. Especially when I get scared and wonder if I will be able to handle it all. This book will put you at ease with its loving and down to earth tone. Most books on pregnancy and post delivery make you feel even more scared with their need for perfection. This author has found a way to anwser all questions without making you feel bad.
Very good tips for moms after delivery. ( vitamin cocktail)
Also includes fathers.

An excellent book filled with so much complete information!
From changing diapers to ear aches, this book covers it all. My husband and I have really appreciated all the information this book contains. We use it for any and all the questions we have about our little girl. I recommend this for all new parents and parents-to-be.

This is a great book for new parents!
This book focuses on the care of the baby as well as all of the issues of new parents. It has excellent diets and exercises, and it guides one through the emotions of new parenthood. My husband loves to read the sections devoted to new fathers. Our Baby: The First Year is a gem and should be read by all new parents.

This book helped me more than any other
I used the 23rd edition of Stobo for my internal medicine rotation as a 3rd year medical student and also as a quick reference for several other rotations. I think it is the best mid-size medicine text I have seen. The content is broken down into bite-size chunks that are easy to read in one sitting--the short chapters make it easier to retain the material. Each section begins with an introductory chapter that gives a concise overview of the approach to take when evaluating a problem with a particular organ-system. Each chapter also ends with a list of summary points that are very helpful. Excellent tables are easy to reference. The actual information contained in the book is in more than enough depth for MS3 level, and the text emphasizes pathophysiology in many chapters, which helped me learn to integrate what I had learned in basic sciences and apply it to seeing patients in the clinical setting. The last section also has some good summary chapters for things that fall outside the realm of each organ-system section. This is a truly outstanding book. I highly recommend it, and I can't wait for the next edition.

Great Internal Medicine resource
Easy to read, contains pertinent info in a concise fashion. Great to study from, easily read during a clerkship.

Great for 3rd year medical students
I started my 3rd year medicine rotation with Appleton and Lange's Current Medical Diagnosis and Therapy but soon found this book to be more appropriate. It clearly and concisely explained pathophysiology of disease as well as clinical aspects, such as presentation, diagnosis and treatment. I also really enjoyed how each organ system began with a general approach to the patient. I am now using this books counterpart for my surgery rotation.

Psychiatry

Amazon base price: $28.95

Excellent quick reference book
The psychiatry 2002, is an excellent quick review of psych. In the clinics it will give you easy to read summaries of all topics in psych and treatments. An ideal book for any med student or resident.

Psych Clerkship
Great reference for the psych clerkship. Written by same 3 authors at UCI who write the psycho-pharmacology book for CCS.

Good quick reference
A good light handbook for quick reference on the run. Point-form and well laid out. Ideal for helping with differential diagnosis. I like the practicality & succintness of the information in it, as I can go to bigger texts if I want details. Bonus is that, if you own the handbook, you can download free a PC version, as well as a Palm, or EPOC (Psion Revo/Mako) versions. Mine is on a Revo and goes around with me when I'm on call.

Great book
The book helped me get into medical school after I complted dental school. I would not have received interviews without them because my GPA is low. All the open interviews commented on my essay. I was referred to this book from Medical Help Network. I'm in debted to my books for life!

I liked it.
I read both books available on the topic, Ilyas's as well as Raju/Yanofski's. I thought both were good but very different. Raju/Yanofski's had nice background and candidate profile info. But Ilyas's book was great because it basically only dealt with the application process and had a great list of programs and their info in the back. I've been to the AMA site and I didn't see as many programs as Ilyas's book had.

Good book
The good thing about this book is the long list of programs in the back of the book. I've tried for a long time to find a list of programs that complete. Also, I thought the book was easy to read and had some great advice.

Mesmerizing and Lyrical Tales
Alvarez uses the clandestine affair of Leini, a proper lady of strict Greek parents, and Orlo, know as the junkman, to eloquently express his love of Baltimore and to give the reader a taste of history. The tales revolving around these two unlikely lovers are told in a lyrical prose that is both mesmerizing and entertaining. At times I found myself wanting to know more about Orlo and Leini, but was left with a sense that the author preferred a cursory view of their lives without a lot of depth and feelings. Nonetheless, at the conclusion, the reader will have a sense of having experience something special.

Mesmerizing
You won't forget the characters in Alvarez's Breslin-esque collection. This book belongs on everybody's summer reading list. With the eye of an artist and the ear of a musician, Alvarez takes you to the heart of the neighborhood and the soul of man.

Memorable, superbly crafted writing.
The entire history of the twentieth century can be traced through the clandestine affair of the junkman Orlo and his Greek lover Leini in Orlo and Leini, the Rafael Alvarez collection of short stories featuring these two memorable characters, their lives, times, friends and associates. The stories comprising this memorable, superbly crafted, highly recommended collection include: Down at the End of Clinton Street; Orlo's Velvet Room; People Love Lies; Red Cabbage and Apples; Christmas Eve; and The Legend of the Velvet Room.

An accessible balanced approach to drug action
This is the third edition of this book that I own. As a dual diagnosis counselor I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. The psychopharmacology of both drugs of abuse and mental health medications are explained in a detailed manner that is very accessible. I find it a valuable resource in helping me educate clients about drug action.

Loan this book to colleagues . . . never see it again
First, I divulge a long-time professional relationship with the author. In the years when I served as Director of Training in a large community mental health center, I contracted with Dr. Julien to provide In-service training to our staff of over 350.
His sessions always filled our training room and received positive evaluations from both persons with medical training and our case manager/counselors.

I focus my review on two portions of the book's sub-title. 1)Non-technical and 2) Revised and Updated.

Robert Julien writes as he speaks. He demystifies the vast information in this field and clarifies it. However, for the reader who wants in-depth information about the topics, there are treasures to be found. Your "aha !" and "ohhhh" buttons will be pushed constantly.

I appreciate the conscientious way Dr. Julien and his publisher have kept the book "revised and updated." There are so many research findings being reported all the time. New medications come on line. This makes many excellent (and expensive) books obsolete within a couple of years. "A Primer of Drug Action" remains current and useful.

But seriously, they sometimes are slow in being returned. I buy them two at a time.

Everything from herbal applications to clinical treatments
A Primer Of Drug Action is a nontechnical guide to the actions, uses and side effects of psychoactive drugs which will prove important for any psychology or health library collection. A Primer Of Drug Action covers everything from herbal applications to clinical treatments of psychological disorders, revealing the latest findings in the applications of drug therapy to various conditions.

The Prostate Cancer Protection Plan: The Powerful Foods, Supplements, and Drugs That Could Save Your Life (Thorndike Large Print Basic Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (November, 2000)
Authors: Robert Burns Arnot, Robert MD Arnot, and Bob Arnot
Amazon base price: $29.95
Used price: $7.82

Prostate cancer killed more than 37,000 men in the U.S. in 1999, and it gets ahold of men early and often. According to autopsy reports, about 25 percent of men in their 30s have latent prostate tumors, as do more than half of men in their 60s.

However, says NBC News Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Bob Arnot, research is beginning to show that this is a cancer that can be prevented or even reversed by dietary changes. The first key, he writes, is soy. America produces a lot but Americans eat very little. In countries in which soy is a dietary staple, men get prostate cancer at a fraction of the U.S. rate. (A second benefit of soy, says Arnot, is a high concentration of the amino acid tyrosine, which helps keep you alert.)

Dr. Arnot lays out a dietary plan that includes lots of soy, along with antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Not coincidentally, this is also a low-fat, heart-healthy diet. Dr. Arnot says that many men are simultaneously at risk for heart disease and prostate cancer; diets rich in saturated animal fats tend to trigger both conditions.

Another benefit of Dr. Arnot's plan is that it prevents breast cancer, too, giving couples a powerful incentive to make the extreme dietary changes necessary to prevent these his-and-hers killers. And with or without the spousal incentive, Dr. Arnot says his experience with his own plan shows that men will lose weight, increase energy, and lower stress--a few valuable perks to take along on that longer, healthier life. --Lou Schuler

Average review score:

Great on nutrition but biased & simplistic re: surgery
This book is entertainingly and enthusiastically written and gives excellent information on how to eat to avoid prostate cancer or counteract prostate cancer--help slow or stop its growth--once you have it. I was apalled, however, at how Arnot started his chapter on "surgery," describing two groups of couples in which the men had prostate cancer. The one, happy giggling group was composed of couples where the decision was to "watch and wait" regarding the prostate cancer--in other words, not have radiation or surgery for the present. In the other group, the men had had surgery within the previous year and "These men appeared morose, even depressed. Many complained of the need to wear diapers. Months after the operation, many no longer had any sex life at all."

This picture is biased, black-and-white, unrealistic and I beleive cruel to people who are trying to decide what to do about prostate cancer. Surgery IS the gold standard treatment for younger men with cancer detected early--men who might die prematurely and very painfully if they did not have surgery, which has a better than 90 percent chance of curing them. And certainly men like Bob Dole, General Schwarzkopf and thousands of others who had surgery are not morose and feeling as if their lives are over--in fact they probably feel a lot better than the 30 percent of those who watch and wait and after ten years have cancer spreading throughout their bodies.

People have to make their choices as best they can, and both watchful waiting and surgery can be appropriate. Arnot's description painting surgery as totally black was neither good journalism nor good medicine, and as the wife of a 59-year-old-man who will probably have surgery, I did not appreciate the depiction. Less than 8 percent (some say 2 pwercent) of men wear diapers after recovery from surgery and all who have surgery are certainly NOT MOROSE compare to all who wait being giddy and happy. For the fifty to thirty percent who cannot have natural erections, there are several good alternatives that will make the penis errect--and the nerves that cost erections DO NOT hinder sensation or orgasm in anyone--men may not get errect but they can feel and have orgasms! Many people take the lemons of this experience and the surgery and make lemonade, glad to be alive and have a chance at a cure. Making a blanket and untrue statement that suggest surgery leads to moroseness is neither helpful, accurate or true. The next edition of this otherwise very good book should correct that.

Excellent guide to prevent and treat prostate cancer
I am a family nurse practitioner. I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive. If you're male and over 40, this is required reading!

The most important book you many ever read....
This book could very easily save your life. While it reaffirmed things I know about fiber, insulin, and exercise, it gave me a lot of new information about how to keep from getting prostate cancer (like my father had), and other important information. It also described "insulin resistance", which is something that I have and has baffeled my doctor for well over a year! Dr. Bob, thanks for writing this great book.

A must have for board review!
Excellent color pictures, and an excellent way to review path. The questions are tough and the book is broken down by systems. This book goes well with either the Big Robbins or even Stars Review pathology since they are both organized by systems.

An Excellent Companion for Any Usmle Review Book
This is a very good test book. It is based on Robbins Pathology books. All pictures and slides are from Robbins books. It contains more than 1000 questions, mostly in clinical vignette format. Questions are very well prepared and reflect the clinical picture of each disease entity very well. Each chapter covers most of the needed items for USMLE Step 1. Answers are not exhaustive, but they are enough. I always recommend the combination of BRS Patholgy and this book as the best pathology source for Step 1.

Great Book for USMLE 1
Okay so this book was my primary review book for Path for the Boards I loved the questions and explanations. I used it with First Aid. It has like 1100 questions and in my opinion completely reviews the most impt points in path for you in question format. The questions are very similar to the board in layout with the clinical presentations. Kaplans questions are similar to it but in my opinion this book offers more questions for path and the material is organized for a complete review. Just do like one block/chapter in it per day and read the explanations. This book is your best path review for the exam because its in question format!! My other review books that I liked were. In the Made Ridiculously Series the: Neuroscience, The Anatomy, especially Microbio Made Ridiculously Simple. For pharm and biochem first aid has all you need to know. BRS Physio is also excellent. These were my books hope it helps you.

Saint Francis Guide is great for residents
I was pleasantly surprised by the Saint Francis Guide to Outpatient Medicine! The content was thorough enough for my clinic, and went beyond the basics of outpatient care. What I loved most about the book was the last section of each chapter which gave recommendations for follow up care, which, as a resident is probably the hardest thing for me to decide when seeing patients in my clinic. I have already shown this book to my fellow residents and even attendings as a book everyone should own. Thank you so much for this great reference!

Hats off!
This book was loaned to me by a faculty member before I started my Primary Care Medicine rotation as a Senior Physician Assistant student. This book is all inclusive with acronyms that make you remember diagnoses and labs at the tip of your fingers. I couldn't have gotten better help from any other source. Even my preceptor who is an acronym genius loved this book when he saw it and wants a copy for himself!

Outstanding outpatient reference book.
As an ARNP, I am always searching for the perfect pocket guide to help me in my clinical practice. My office bookshelf is full of many different medical recourses covering topics from MSK injuries to Women's health. This spring, a friend gave me a copy of the Saint-Frances Guide and I can honestly say it is the best pocket guide I have found. Each section clearly guides me through an introduction to a problem, the approach to the patient, the differential, the most relevant test, and finally the most appropriate treatment.

One part of the Guide I like the most is the use of algorithms and mnemonics. Many times during a busy day I don't have time to read an entire chapter. This is when I use the mnemonic. It quickly tells me the most common causes of problem, which then guides to an exam or a test I know will need to be ordered. My only wish is that this guide would have been around when I was in graduate school. It certainly would have made my clinical rotations easier and less stressful.
