Health Basics by Dr. Richardson MD
This book explains how the body works and provides strategies
to make it work better. It begins with a discussion on the
computation of fat grams obtained by multiplying calories by (.3)
and dividing the overall result by 9. The author cautions
against having too much sugar, fats or sweets in the diet.
He advises to increase Omega-3 fatty acids, soy, fiber, Ca.,
B vitamins and Vitamins A-E (anti-oxidants)

Dr. Richardson advises us to avoid or minimize red meat, butter,
cheese and to reduce milk consumption. In addition, he stresses
that we should have realistic weight loss goals, reduce smoking
and reduce alcohol. Recommended dietary supplements are aloe,
Ca., capsicum, chamomile, CO Q 10 enzyme, cranberry,
echinacea, flaxseed, garlic, ginger, ginseng, gingko biloba,
grapeseed extract, licorice,peppermint and psyllium.
He indicates that sleep apneas can precipitate heart arrhythmias.
There is an important section dealing with arthritis. The author
explains that the Cox-2 inhibitors are safer than aspirin for
reducing inflammation. Dr. Richardson explains how chlamydia
are an infectious agent in plaque. In addition, the C-reactive
protein is a marker for inflammation. Special tests indicating
an increase in homosystein levels are causative factors in
blood clots. The author explains how magnets influence pain signals transmitted in sensory nerves. In addition, general
magnetic fields alter electrical impulse conduction.

Peak flow devices and meter dose inhalers measure and monitor
air flow. These assist patients in maintaining breathing
capacity/function. This work is a treasure chest of medical
knowledge which is a "must read" for your personal medicinal
library.

Outstanding Health and Medical Reference
Very helpful health and medical information resource written in a very easy to read and understand format. A "must-have" resource for your family. A highly recommended gift for family and friends.

Meets a need
As a senior citizen I find in this book the answers to many of my questions. It's full of information and advice. Older folks tend to fret. This book helps distinguish between real and imagined problems. It's written in a user-friendly manner.

Provides a solid foundation for understanding and growth
Caregivers who live with a severely ill family member or friend receive a guide on how they can handle life-threatening and life-changing illness. From how to help others heal using one's presence and support to understanding differences between healing and curing, this is packed with advice from the author's own work with cancer support groups, and provides a solid foundation for understanding and growth.

Great Guide
Have you ever read a book that felt like you were having a conversation with a good friend? Jeff Kane's new book, The Healing Companion makes me feel comforted, entertained, encouraged and enlightened; just as if I'd spent time talking with a good friend.

The book could be considered as a guide toward offering sick loved ones our healing presence. This guidance is valid for anyone relating to someone who is sick and is just as helpful to doctors, nurses and counselors as it is to family members and anyone who has a loved one who is sick.

A quote from page three says "This book will guide you toward offering sick loved ones your healing presence. By learning to ask them exactly how they're suffering and help them express their feelings thoroughly, you'll encourage an atmosphere of honesty. You'll move toward a perspective in which whatever happens physically, the emotional turmoil surrounding it will settle. All involved will benefit from increasing serenity."

I found especially helpful Jeff's discussion of how sick people suffer. He talks about really listening to their suffering and hearing their fears, anxieties, confusion, depression and rages. He says "I learned that people get emotional when they're sick and that fear and anger and despair aren't abnormal; they're a natural feature of sickness. In fact, I'd worry about the mental health of sick people who weren't affected by their consequent feelings. Hearing many hundreds of stories, I gradually learned that people don't generally suffer from their disease as much as from their emotions, the reactions their disease ignites in them." (page seven)

The rest of the chapters in the book are just as juicy and relevant as the above examples. In "Speaking With TLC", Jeff encourages speaking (only after much listening) with truth, leanness and compassion. He gives examples and practical questions to ask ourselves to pass the "TLC" test.

My two favorite chapters are "Welcoming Mystery" and "Healing Yourself". The first deals with the existential questions that illness can stir and the second with "continual" self care. What profound encouragement both offer for living in this world.

I truly enjoyed reading this book (and have read several sections more than once). The wonderful stories of courage and healing inspired me to be a better listener, a better friend and even a better person. Thank you Jeff.

J. Kane, The Healing Companion
Anyone confronted with the serious sickness of a family member of friend will find this sensitive but unsentimental book invaluable. Jeff Kane not only shows how the emotional support and participation of one's friends and family help the sick person in his or her illness (that is, the social and spiritual disclocation and emotional and psychological suffering caused by the disease), but also gives very concrete, practical suggestions on listening, responding, respecting, and feeling and showing compassion. Dr. Kane's insights about the experience of suffering, the devastation it causes and the opportunities it offers both the sick person and the care-giver for self-knowledge and personal transfromation make this a book to be read and reread time and again.

Great for medical and healthcare professionals
I was lucky enough to find a copy of this book in my hospital. It is excellent. I strongly recommend it to any healthcare professional, doctor, or student who needs a quick, accurate reference to medical diseases and syndromes.

I refer to "In a Page" all the time
As a practicing podiatrist for 25 years I finally found a book that quickly and thoroughly gives me the current medical information that I require in evaluating my patients co-morbidities. I refer to "In a Page Medicine" all the time. I have a copy in both my offices!

Great review book!
As a medicine resident, I found this book to be very useful for general medicine rotations. It also helped me prepare for USMLE step 3.

An Island Out of Time : A Memoir of Smith Island in the Chesapeake

Although the archipelago known as Smith Island sits in Chesapeake Bay, just off Maryland's eastern shore, it is in some ways a place lost in time and space. Lacking a police force, a high school, or a hospital, it still carries the flavor of another era. People earn a tough living from crabbing, which means 18-hour work days for six months of the year, and they still speak a heavily accented language that some scholars believe dates back to Elizabethan times. In 1987, Tom Horton, an environmental writer for the Baltimore Sun, moved with his family to this 300-year-old community. This thoughtful, well-written book is his record of the two years they spent there.

Excellent Portrait of Chesapeake Bay Life
Notice that all the reviewers here live near the Chesapeake Bay. This bay will interest and speak to all those that have an interest in a society and environment almost gone. A super read, intimate in detail and beautiful in imagery.

An extraordinary writer on an extraordinary place
Tom Horton's great gift as a writer is his ability to conjure up the natural world in words. His memoir of his family's time on Smith Island is his best work yet. Note I said yet. A book by Tom Horton is always a cause for rejoicing. His environmental writing is up there with Aldo Leopold and Barry Lopez.

A rare, insider's view of a unique way of life.
An avid reader of publications like National Geographic, I found this book to be a very enjoyable and accurate depiction of an area that receives too little attention. The only thing that could improve this story would be full color photographs illustrating the brilliant sunsets, changes in water color, the wildlife and the characters that are detailed throughout. This book sparked such an interest in the area that my family currently is searching for a new home on the Crisfield side of the Bay. We appreciated the pace of life and the simplicity that have caused the locals to resist change and embrace their past. Many thanks to the author for clueing us in.

Power in Memory
This book is a wonderful tapestry of history and memory that makes for a warm, enjoyable read, despite its message: what is lost. From Native American Matapeake Indians to Baltimore's great fire, and the "second" Bay Bridge construction, the history reveals the natural resources, economy, and community values of early Kent Island, and its present reality of tract housing, expressways, and strip malls. Freedman's microcosm of Kent Island is a macro for what's happening all over the U.S. Character and charm are no more. We live in vinyl boxes and shop the same chains. As you drive around your town, have you ever really looked to see how ugly most of the landscape is? Try it. The book's images are quite extraordinary though. The author's memories and cherished photos of family and place possess an honesty that reached out for my own distinct early memories, and begged me to appreciate them. She also reinforced my appetite for finding value and beauty in simple things and ways that deserve human note and care. A few of my favorite parts of the book: Recipes Served on the Porch, My Mother's Coat, and the twelve days of Christmas. This book was personally enriching for me, and it's a wake-up call for those of us who've known a finer quality of life. We do know better. Janet Freedman came right out and said it.

History and memory merge in this absorbing book
Janet Freedman seamlessly blends history and personal remembrances in this charming account of family and place. Her grandmother's farm and the surrounding area are brought to life through the memories of a child, the commentary of family and friends, and detailed research. One need not be familiar with Kent Island to feel a stir of nostalgia for the simpler times she describes.
No romanticized sentiment is found here. Hardships are made clear ("the shocking cold of January linoleum" in an unheated bedroom, for example, or a coat handed down through six children), but they are tempered with descriptions of the bounty provided by land and water and the reassurance of routine. The security offered by close family ties is evident throughout.
Emphasis is placed on accurate and fond description of the region, though recent comers might be hard pressed to reconcile the dirt roads and general stores of Freedman's childhood with the asphalt and strip malls of today's Kent Island. A selection of period photographs augments the author's colorful prose, giving a visual record of structures that have fallen vicitim to "progress" and the people who helped shape this story.
Sadly, the book's poignancy is derived from what we've lost; the concept of controlled development has come too late to save much of Kent Island's appeal. Freedman's work will stand as a testament to what was and a warning of how quickly such things can be lost.

Kent Island...Another Victim to Megapolis
I read with interest Janet Freedman's book, KENT ISLAND and was saddened by the great loss of American landscape, folkways and individual freedom that goes along with the vast real estate grab that has been occurring everywhere on the East Coast of the United States during the last 50 years. Except for a few state and federal parks, the coastline is completely owned by the wealthy. Where there were once families and communities engaged in agriculture or seafood harvesting we now have a blight of ticky-tacky housing and high rise hotels. Where there were once farmers and watermen working the land and the water there are now yachtsmen and other pleasure boat owners filling our bays and inlets to such an extent that nobody can derive any pleasure from fishing or sailing.Wherein lies the "pleasure"? And its not just the coastline. Here in Pennsylvania, truck farmers and orchard owners daily give way to the lucrative offers of land speculators. Soon we will be getting all our fruit from Chile or Peru because all the excellent arable land in the northeastern U.S. will have been turned into suburbia. GARY WHITTLE

KIDS & SPORTS IS FOR PARENTS & COACHES
This book is about children and the appropriate participation of sports at different age levels. Moreover, it addresses the problems of children with various disabilities, such as asthma, diabetes, etc. for parents and school coaches, to enable them to make decisions regarding their childrens' participation in sports. I believe this is an important and remarkable book that
Dr. Small has made available for those people who are concerned about the well-being of their children

excellent reference
Dr. Small has covered all bases in this extremely informative, well layed-out book.
His outlines, questions and answers, and diagrams provide a clear cut guide for parents. As a physical therapist that treats adults and children, I am often faced with the same questions Dr. Small has answered in his book. Besides being a great guide for parents, it is an excellent reference for rehab professionals, coaches and any other professionals who work with kids' sports.

user friendly
This is a vaulable book for any person involved in children's sports. My children will be both safer and better athletes as a result of my reading this book. In addition, although Dr. Small is obviously a highly trained physician, the book is written in s a very user friendly style and highly acccessible to a layman.
I think that this is a great book for people involved with childrens' sports.

The Backstory of the Brain. A Cult Classic?
This book is a must for anyone interested in learning about the brain. It is packed with references to the literature of original investigators and not only explains the function of the limbic brain, but, in essence, details the history of ideas about the limbic brain, from Broca's anatomic description to Papez's Circuit. Although somewhat idiosyncratic, with some pages containing more footnote than text, this book is a terrific treatment of the subject. I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a classic in the literature. Thank you Dr. Lautin!

A Wonderful Narrative to a Fascinating Subject
The subject of this book is not only one of the most fascinating in neuroscience, but the author treats it in such a way to make it even more intriguing. More general texts about the limbic system are competent in conveying the facts, but Dr. Lautin adds another dimension by placing these facts in historic (and scientific) context, through copious footnoting and elucidating sidebars. Nothing could be better, in my view, than giving the reader the facts, a good narrative and a roadmap to learn more about the subject. This is what Dr. Lautin has accomplished. Bravo!

Getting Inside Your Mind
Thinking. Reasoning. The unique qualities that makes us human. This book provides a unique and concise insight into that most complex of all machines, the human brain. Although not everyone will be up to the challenge, for those who do, that is read this book, it will be a mind opening experience. In "The Limbic Brain" Dr. Lautin offers lucid explanations that make this part of our minds, which we all share, a truly emotional experience. In this book, Dr. Lautin has achieved the sweet smell of success in making the arcane clear. This is a must read, not for the summer beach, but for a comfortable chair in front of a window to your mind.

Making Memories : Reflections on Parenting from the Heart of a Father and the Head of a Psychoanalyst

Phases of Life
Dr. Kruger's book, "Making Meories" was, for me, one of the most profound books I have ever read. I found it meaningful in reflecting upon my family of origin as well as my history as a father. Dr. Kruger's book is filled with wisdom and presented in an elequent manner. It also contained considerable humor. Dr. Kruger is a good story teller. It would, in my opinion, have meaning for any of us, who has been a son, daughter, father or mother.

Highly informative, accessible, recommended reading.
Dr. David Krueger draws upon his experience and expertise as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine, Training and Supervising Analyst at Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Institute, and Faculty member of The Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in Washington DC, to explain and documents in Making Memories how children shape their parents. It's about how fathers and mothers learn from their children, and must ultimate learn to say goodbye to their sons and daughters so when those children-as-adults live out their independent lives, the emotional bonds of parenthood and inter-generational communication remain healthy and effective. Making Memories is highly informative and recommended reading for students of family dynamics, parenting, and is accessible to the non-specialist general reader with an interest in parent-child relationships.

Making Memories
Warm and touching, yet chock-full of information for parents of all ages. Truly delightful!

Immunotics: A Revolutionary Way to Fight Infection, Beat Chronic Illness, and Stay Well

A firm belief in their readers' intelligence guides coauthors Robert Rountree, M.D. (coauthor of Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child and A Parent's Guide to Medical Emergencies) and Carol Colman (coauthor of Stop Depression Now and The Antioxidant Miracle) through this clearly written guide, beginning with an eye-opening chapter on antibiotics and their consequences. As a result of their frequent misuse, due to doctors misprescribing them and patients not taking their full prescriptions, tougher bacteria are on the rise and weakened immune systems are increasingly common. While Rountree (the primary voice here) advocates the use of antibiotics and applauds their lifesaving abilities, he warns of their dark side. Rountree urges patients to take proactive steps toward better health by combining proper nutrition, vitamin supplements, a positive attitude, and an "immune friendly environment." He calls this powerful combination immunotics and builds a strong case for its implementation. Following a quick refresher on the human immune system, Rountree neatly describes recommended vitamins and herbs--from aloe vera and antioxidants to uva ursi and Western larch. His basic immunotics program outlines vitamin dose ranges for everyday use and answers questions regarding brands and drug interaction. He offers specialized programs for the elderly, parents with school-age children, those who deal with chronic asthma or gastrointestinal problems, and individuals at risk for cancer or heart disease. The chapters on the immunotic benefits of optimism and a safe environment never dig too deep; rather, they offer a smattering of intelligent reminders and a few helpful resources (including Dr. Martin Seligman's book, Learned Optimism: How to Change Your Mind and Your Life). --Liane Thomas

Informative and Effective
I bought this book on a whim several years ago when I started working as a high school teacher and was concerned about my increased risk of getting sick. This book is well written, easy to understand and very informative. Rountree describes each supplement and its effects in detail and also has specific supplement regimines to treat certain ailments. I can say that I have not had a full-blown cold in the last three years. Although the supplements can be expensive, what he recommends truly work! Buy this book and you will not be disappointed and if you follow his regimine you will rarely be sick.

Excellent advice that works
I bought the hard cover edition of this book about a year ago because I am very prone to colds and sinus infections. I read it but did not follow the advice because you seemed to need to buy so much stuff. This past spring and summer (2001), I got an endless and particularly exhausting sinus infection. I was miserable and I remembered the book and went shopping for supplements. I warn you the advice is not cheap to follow, however, the results for me were excellent. It took a few weeks to see results but now I feel better than I have in years--greater physical and mental energy. I caught a chest cold (complete with green mucus) in September and threw it off very quickly (within a week) without antibiotics--a first for me. I would not part with my copy of the book. Olive leaf extract, NAC, coenzyme Q10, alkylglycerol etc.--I take a lot of supplements every day now but they work. I have a huge shelf full of health books and this is undoubtedly the best one that I own. I literally live by it now.

Real solutions!!!
I HIGHLY recommend this book! I had a sinus infection that would not clear up after three rounds of antibiotics-the most severe bout I've ever had, including losing my sense of smell. I followed the doc's reommendations for sinus infections, and within one week, my sense of smell began to return, and the infection finally cleared! Dr. Rountree is a genius! I am very grateful I decided to get this book-it is now my number one health reference. And NAC is a supplement that I will always keep on my shelf. Much gratitude to Dr. Rountree.

Great review
Very useful for the IMGs. Contains the majority of informations necessary to pass an exams that requires lots of associations between facts that just need to be memorized. The new edition (2002) has been greatly improved, it is better than other more popular comprehensive reviews.

Excellent review for Step 1
This book is so simple to read that I assumed that it could not be comprehensive. After the exam, I realized just how good the book was. The book looks thick but that is only because the charts and diagrams are big and clear and there is plenty of room to add notes. It is an excellent final review of key concepts and details. Much easier to read than First Aid. If you know everything in this book, you are very well prepared for Step 1.

Medical Boards Step 1 Made Ridiculously Simple
