A look see into race relations from a different perspective.
I had the opportunity to read this book a while back. I was very impressed by its contents and what topics and examples were used and used effectively. The book captured my full attention in needing to understand more. The things I read I have seen even as a child but reading them now is only a confirmation for the questions I had then. Of course not questions my own parents didn't tell me but answers from a different perspective. I am glad and proud that Alice explored and expressed herself in this book. It brings a lot of insight to a hidden topic. I highly recomend this book to anyone who loves to listen and learn.

Great book!
Hello there. First of all I should say that I saw the movie first and then I read the book. The movie it was based exactly like the book, with the same scenes, the director (strohein) he even made the movie just like the book. But the producer cutted it, because it was 8 hours of length. The book talks about Mc Teague a dentist who falls in love of one of his patients, the cousin of his best friend, and his best friend helped him to get married. And after this she wins the lottery and there it start an history of love, poor, greed, traitors and death. Good book to read, and great move to watch.

Invaluable Reference
McCutcheon's is an invaluable reference for surface active agents, listed by chemical type, HLB, etc. and with contact details for the manufacturers and information on typical uses. Covers a tremendous number of products. Relevance far beyond formulation of surfactant products, it also indicates sources of supply of chemical species that may be very hard to find by conventional chemical catalogs. Excellent value for money. I have found it useful in many projects.

Slave History Revealed
A wonderful companion book to history textbooks. Having scanned several history texts to find pertinent and relevant facts concerning the history of slave revolt to no avail, this book was a real "find". The book contains several historical photographs and drawings which aids and assists the student's imagination. The chapters depict leaders of the slave revolt, their lives, their beliefs, the risks they took and the many lives that were lost. The book is heartfelt and compassionate. It does not preach, point accusatory fingers, nor does it apologize, but instead celebrates and remembers the African American men and woman men who fought for what they believed in - freedom - during the Civil War.

In an era where I hope we will begin to recognize the mistakes we have made in the past by uncovering our people's cultural diversity, cultural history and the many differences the inhabitants of this country represent, this book is welcomed and applauded. I will use it for my children and in my classroom so that we do not forget, but remember those who helped change and shape the history of our country.

Get away from the poetry they fed you in college
McClure's poetry does need to be read aloud (get Love Lion, his album, for a demonstration) but this is good a transcript to work from as any; a perfect lead in to his books, poems of which are from nine of.

Witness to the Young Republic: A Yankee's Journal 1828-1870
Witness to The Young Republic: A Yankee's Journal, 1828-1870 By Benjamin Brown French and Edited by Donald B. Cole and John J. McDonough is a marvelous journal that time-capsules life in Washington,D.C. from 1828 - 1870. Brown was a political officeholder and knew and became personally aquainted with every president from John Quincy Adams through Ulysses S. Grant.

This book was edited from over four thousand pages that were part of his personal diary... and what a diary it was. French had a flair for writing and he makes a splendid treatment of the events on the political scene of his day, keeping the readers well entertained with fascinating annotations and gossip. French's eventful life is recorded here with a delightful mix of the ordinary and extraordinary characters only an observer with a keen eye can bring to paper.

French kept watch and recorded some very interesting events in American history: as his journal gives us a shrewd but lively entertaining trip through American life; a magnificent sweep across American history, we see comments on personalities, events, manners and political ideology, penetrating observations on the people and events of that time.

One of the most tearful events, as described by French, was his account of Lincoln, as he was at Lincoln's bedside when he died. One of the best accounts in the book is French's description of the events leading to and including Lincoln's Gettysburg address. All in all, this book is very interesting and gives a rare look into events, life and times of that time period and is well worth your time to read. This book is full of information about the leaders of this great country and how they really felt at that time.

There is information about all of the prominent personalities found in this book from that time... making it a treasure trove from which we can get a better picture of how life was, not only public, but private as well.

Superbly researched, documented and accessibly written.
John McCourt's The Years Of Bloom: James Joyce In Trieste, 1904-1920 is a remarkable and original contribution to Joycean studies. McCourt was able to acquire information never before published about Joyce's activities in the years he resided in Trieste, and which influenced his career as one of the truly great writers in the English language. Superbly researched, accessibly written, thoroughly documented, and impressively presented, The Years Of Bloom is a major work of outstanding scholarship and a welcome, enduring, seminal contribution which will be part of every college and university reading list and reference collections on the life and writings of James Joyce.

Makes me wanna holler/ Makes me wanna holla
Growing up in the hood can be difficult, especially for Nathan McCall. He's seen and done it all from gang beatings, to murder, robbery, and rape, but he can only keep his head above the water for only so long. He gets arrested and becomes a rehabilitated man as where he writes his own novel in prison, which is the very same exact book that you probably have in your hand. This book is a fantastic one which describes many of todays problems with gangs and bad neighborhoods such as the one in the book. I give it and A+, ahmen!

Account of past mistakes. But not the entire truth.
I am an African-American female who was raised by a single, divorced, struggling mother. My father existed only at the periphery of my life, usually at his convenience. Because I also know what a struggle it is to exist as an African in America, I have little sympathy for the author. He grows up in a two-parent, middle-class home. He receives an education and home-training. But that isn't enough. He still deserves payback for being Black. He destroys other peoples' lives because of his special racial "problems." He rapes defenseless women, committs crimes against innocent people, and abandons children he has fathered. And now HE'S angry and wants to holler! I think the author is a real jerk. His behavior is not justified. He does not acknowledge the contribution he made to his own pain. Many people experience discrimination, bigotry, and hatred by others who don't fully understand their differences, but they don't use that as an excuse to go on a rampage of negative behavior.

So why the four star rating? Nathan McCall is a good writer.

With his next book, "What's Goin' On," McCall acknowledges his evil past (due to public outcry) and the dehumanizing treatment he inflicted on his past victims. With "What's Goin' On," The author eventually shows the ability to see beyond the safety net of yelling RACISM when he is forced to take responsibility for his own negative actions. I would like to know whether the author is using part of the profit from this book to pay overdue child-support. I don't like McCall as a person. But I will continue to read his books because it IS interesting to see a different perspective of coming-of-age in America.

DISTURBING TRUTH
MAKES ME WANNA HOLLER stayed with me longer than any other book I've ever read. It's the story of a life like nothing I'd ever imagined and it gave me nightmares for weeks.

This book is extremely well-written, so much so that you feel the pain of the victims, moreso than that of the writer.

McCall writes about his misspent youth, the drug culture, fights, robberies and gang rapes, in which he participated. He's truthful about his failure with marriage and women in general. He even discusses being arrested and his time in prison, where he worked on his writing craft. Then he questions why main stream America doesn't want to accept him with open arms.

It's amazing that through all of his wrongs, this book offers no hint of shame or repentance. He's not the epitome of "a young black man in America". He's an ex lowlife who doesn't know it. He's the kind of person that's easy to hate.

But because of his honesty in his subject matter and his excellent writing ability, I think this book is a masterpiece. It should be required high school and college reading. MAKES ME WANNA HOLLER is definitely an eye opener.
