Genius
This final book in the Some Die Mad series of four books rounds out what has to be a work of pure genius. Parts are done so well one has to say this is as good as literature can get...from any genre, any language and any time.

Genius
No question about it; this 44288 guy is right up there with the greats. Not only do you get one [great] story in Islands In Time and the three previous books in the Some Die Mad quatrain, you get your epiphanies, your apotheoses, your enlightened madnesses. You get your streams of consciousness and interior monologues. You get your unreliable narrator and fractured time lines and multiple points of view. You get a whole lot of sex both sacred and profane. You get long segments as good as literature can get written by anybody from anywhere and at anytime. Why this book and the whole Some Die Mad series is an artistic tour de force. This guy ought to posthumously get a nomination for the Nobel Literary Prize from somebody. The whole series sure as hell qualifies for a gold prize from somewhere. Sheer freaking genius. I really wish I was a book publicist....

Mad takes on Superduperman, Battyman and their friends
Superman and Batman appear on the cover of "Mad About Super Heroes," along with Alfred E. Newman, because most of the parodies found within have to do with those two comic book icons. For the Man of Steel the fun goes all the way back to Harvey Kurtzman's classic "Superduperman!" from "Mad" #4 (back when it was still a comic book) to "Smellville" from Mad #415. However, "Superduperman!", the parody of the comic book, is not to be confused with "Superduperman" the take off on the first movie, which were followed by "Spuerduperman II" and "Stuporman ZZZ," which is not to be confused with the television series "Lotus & Cluck: The New Misadventures of Stuporman." One of the things I found interesting reading through these stories was how hard it must be after several decades to come up with a new name for Superman's secret identity, from Clark Bent to Cluck Camp.

The Caped Crusader receives similar treatment, from the classic Wally Wood drawn "Bat Boy and Rubin!" to "Bats-Man" the television show to the blockbuster "Battyman" movie and its "Buttman Returns" and "Buttman and Rubbin'" sequels. This collection comes courtesy of "the usual gang of super-idiots," and includes classic artwork by Mort Drucker, Sergio Aragones, Al Jafee, Angelo Torres, and Don Martin (these guys must have worked for nothing because this book is, by its own admission, priced "Cheap!). There are two sections in the volume that offer up the stories in full-color, but, of course, these are restricted to offerings from the comic book days of "Mad" (e.g., "Plastic Sam" and "Woman Wonder") and back covers (e.g, "Famous Artists' Paintings of Comic Book Characters").

There are other full-length movie parodies as well of the "X-Men" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies, although I liked the "Upcoming Movies Based on Comic Books," which simply offered up quickies on "Human Torch Song Triology," "Hulk Fiction" and "JLA Confidential." Another favorite is the "Real-Life Superhoeres at Comic Book Conventions," which uses the names of familiar heroes from "The Amazing Spider-Man" to "Wonder Woman" to describe the fans who read such literature. So there is a nice mix of formats to these comic looks at the comic books as the world's greatest super heroes are "mercilessly mocked and ridiculed by the world's dumbest artists and writers." Of course, if you did not read the original comics or see these movies, then you will never ever get all of the jokes. But then that is the whole point of satire, right?

A great book of parodies
This was a great book to just laugh at.

DEFINITELY A KEEPER!
This is definitley a keeper, especially for those who love stories of the military.
I love those Special Forces guys! I am always looking for the gals that will bond and love those kind of guys with a strong protective love that will always trust their guys, even when they don't think they should.
The Major, Hope Evans almost missed the mark,- six years, gal - that is almost too long. But it wasn't all her fault when Ryder ran scared. She could have been a little more confrontational.
Loved the action, and the characters - especially Mom and Dad Evans.
Highly recommended --M

Fans will hunt for more intriguing military romances by Fox

Six years ago, military officers Hope Evans and Ryder McGrath had a torrid love affair. However, she hoped that they would make it permanent. He was unable to override the guilt that he felt because he seemed to love Hope more than his recently deceased spouse. Eventually, Hope fled to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska where she became known as the Arctic Fox while Ryder was dubbed the Iceman.

She is presently stationed in Arizona and word is that he is coming for an installation visit. She hoped to avoid him, but her father, a retired General, insists she tell Ryder that strange happenings are occurring at the nearby dismantled missile site. When they meet, Ryder is not sure he can trust her since he knows he hurt her badly. Though his mission is to uncover who is behind missing airplane parts, he realizes that he cannot discount what she tells him. Together, they investigate and find their attraction ever stronger as love fully blossoms. However, they face a foe that will eradicate them to maintain the secrecy of a daring plot.

MAD ABOUT THE MAJOR is a powerful military romance that will leave readers on the edge of their seats trying to figure out what is going on at the Verde Vista dismantled missile site. The romantic intrigue story line seems so appropriate and feasible as it provides an intriguing what if scenario to the IFF treaty of 1981. The lead protagonists, Hope's father, and a chauvinistic officer add the necessary depth to turn Roz Denny Fox's novel into a twenty-one gun salute.

Mad at Miles: A Black Woman's Guide to Truth

A Good Read
If you`re looking for a good read, the book `MAD AT MILES` is a good place to start. Pearl has a lyrical flow to her writings. She caputres her audience attention & keeps them from wanting to put the book down. This book is about battered women such as Tina Turner, Cicely Tyson and many other women. Miles is a jazz artist. A question Pearl wants her audience to keep in mind while reading is, SHOULD WE purchase music by Men whose lyrics consist of how they`ve beaten or plan to beat their wives/girlfriends even if the music sounds good?? I personally, don`t think we should because we are condoning to their behavior making it seem that what they are doing is okay. I feel that most people (like myself) aren`t really `hearing` the lyrics while listenin to what they think is good music.

Mad at Miles: A Black Woman's Guide to Truth
I had never heard of Pearl Cleage until 1992, when a friend saw her in a lecture she gave on the campus of Central Missouri State University. My friend gave me her copy of Mad at Miles to read. It sat on my table for 3 weeks before I finally got around to reading it. Being a fan of Miles Davis, I couldn't figure out what reason anyone would have to be mad at him. When I finally read the book, I understood. This book is excellent!! Cleage writes sort of a handbook for women to guard them against being the victim of abuse. She talks about her own abuse at the hands of a former lover, and the abuse suffered by Cicely Tyson at the hands of her former husband, Miles Davis. This book should be read by anyone who has been the victim of abuse and even by those who haven't been abused. Cleage's strength comes across to the reader. She makes me proud to be a woman, an African American, and a strong human being. I admire her for her courage in speaking out against such a beloved music figure, such as Miles Davis. I have become a fan of Pearl Cleage and recommend her to anyone looking for a new and exciting author to read.

Great characters, great book
George Plimpton wants to write a book about the techniques offensive and defensive lineman. The Mad Duck (Alex Karras) and The Bear (John Gordy) will be used for research. Their first meeting for the book places the author, George, in down lineman position in the apartment of one of the men as they hammer him into lamps and such. From there the book takes off on the minds of Karras and Gordy. It is filled with absolute laugh out loud hilarity. The book finishes with Plimpton at Quarterback, but this time for the World Champion Baltimore Colts. Insights to hall of famers Johnny Unitas and Bubba Smith are must reading for football historians. (Smith at a party trying to teach a myna bird his name, "Bubba, Bubba, Bubba"). One also gets introduced to Bob Irsay who dismantles the team. It is a hint of things to come----a move to Indianapolis.

Funniest book--maybe the best--ever written about football.
Over 25 years after reading this for the first time, I still remember some of the more hilarious moments: Alex Karras's golf tournament, with the shrieks of wild animals echoing from the woods; Joe Schmidt's basement full of horrible recordings of the Detroit Lions singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic (not to mention the unsold vibrators); Bobby Layne sending Karras out for burgers then abandoning the frightened rookie. Interspersed among the laughs are some wonderful tutorials on the art of football where it really matters--in the trenches with the hogs. Offensive guard John Gordy and defensive tackle Alex Karras, two of the greatest ever to play the game, explain the nearly invisible game of blocking and tackling. This is a sort of cult book for true fans of football and great writing. Come join our congregation!

The Mad Family Gets Their Mads Out, June 18, 2001
I found Lynne Namka's book to be a delightful and useful addition to my counseling library. I will use it in working with children, who are struggling to express their anger in constructive and healthy ways. Also, I am sure it will be useful in helping families learn how to deal with anger in non-violent ways, and to keep focused on how to relate to each member positively. The charts at the back can assist parents to help their children. As well, these and the whole approach presented could be useful to those who work with children - counselors, teachers, etc. In my view, this is definitely an excellent book to add to one's resources in working with children.

The Mad Family Gets Their Mads Out
I was pleased with Lynne Namka's book. I will use it when working with children in counseling and recommend it to parents. It's message can be used with four or five year olds though pre-teens and parents. Especially in todays society with all the violence we need an easily understandable book to help children and families learn techniques to identify and handle their anger. The check lists are helpful reminders of the lessons of the book. The additional resources in the back of the book could be of benefit to parents, teachers or counselors.

Awesome Book For The Mad Mag. Fan
One of the most consistantly great things about Mad Magazine over the last 30+ years has been Al Jaffee's fold in's which were always on the inside back cover. This book features many of them with a before (not folded) and an after (folded) picture. The book is very sleek because of the excellant job that was done with the fold ins. If you're a long time Mad Magazine fold in fan you need this book.

An Amazing Classic!
Al Jaffee's fold-ins amazed us In April 1964. This Is a collection of Fold-In's and a breif paragarph with each telling why he made it and what was happening in the world at the time he made It! A Must have for anyone!

YAY
MAD LIBS are the best thing!!I will be buying some [...]! Living in Oz,It can be hard to buy mad libs but I managed to get this one.It is really good, really fun,and gives lotsa laughs. And,if you are wondering, yep, you can play each story again and again as you forget them.I suppose one of my favourite stories in it is Beauty Advice.

Fun, Fun, Fun!
These aren't only for kids. They are fun anytime...traveling, rainy days, late night entertainment. They take at least 2 people though. One person has the mad lib book, which is full of short stories with missing nouns, verbs, advebs and adjectives. That person asks the other person for the nouns, verbs, etc, writes them in the blanks and then reads the story outloud. My sixth grade teacher used to do this with our class...almost 20 years ago

Go a mazing with this amazing book!
Looking for the perfect gift for that puzzle buff friend of yours? Look no further. Mad Mazes is a delightful book of 20 different mazes, each with its own rules for traveling through the maze. Each maze is challenging and fun and, if you solve it, you will shout Eureka! In this book, you see the genius of Robert Abbott at work and at play! We call him the O. Henry of puzzles as his solutions often have a surprise or twist to them. Each maze is preceded by a fun story which gives the rules for traveling through the maze. So, whether you are 7 or 107, if you enjoy challenging puzzles, this treasure of a book is for you. The good news is that Robert Abbott has written a wonderful sequel to Mad Mazes. It is called SuperMazes.

Wondefully intricate puzzles for the stubborn or brilliant
By saying the word "maze" I'm probably conjuring the image of those flat angles of black lines. This is NOT what you'll get if you buy this book. Mad Mazes is precisely that--each maze has a complex set of dynamic rules. One allows you only to turn right--unless you pass a certain point, after which you can only turn left. Another is three-dimensional, and you climb and descend levels in an effort to reach bottom. You actually have to (gasp) think. I first got this book 6-7 years ago and still haven't solved all the puzzles! (And there are only twenty, to my everlasting regret.) Each is accompanied with illustrations and a delightfully humorous story.

At the end, everything is as it should be...
If you're here because you read all adventures of Brother Cadfael and you found, like I did, that you wanted more stories about medieval England then you have come to the right place!

Let me say that although the mystery in the story is sufficient, it's in the characters and in the reality of everyday life that the story comes alive. The author (who, btw, knows medieval history so well he plays with his inexperienced readers from time to time) is fascinated with the imbalance of power between the serfs and their masters: the nobles and the clergy. He describes with passion the abuse of power perpetrated by the not-so-noble knights on the submissive local serfs. The knights think themselves invulnerable as they believe they have the support of the most powerful family in the kingdom. Yet, their plotting leaves them with no real friends and their newly acquired castle is guarded by hired soldiers who have their own agenda in mind.

A girl is viciously murdered and the priest who had an affair with her is accused, but soon we find out he's not guilty of killing her and her death is somehow tied to another murder of a man whom she has never known, but who held some secrets of the lord of the castle. Into that complicated web of local gossip and vicious plotting for yet more power Sir Baldwin arrives. He's an ex-Templar, now married and for the first time since the destruction of his Order daring to be happy. He's been charged by the king with finding the truth. He's a worldly man, a little cynical from his experiences, yet a kind man despite his ruling manner. By the time he's figured out the depth of evil contained in the murder mystery the reader will believe the medieval times were indeed very dark. Yet, things are at their darkest just before sunrise. It's the good act that redeems the cruel man and there is no act that can't be redeemed. We see the men get up and live their simple lives in dignity because the justice was done just as our knight marches off on a pilgrimage to pay for his mistake.

I think Brother Cadfael would say "things are as they should be."

Realistic and satisfying
Fans of historical mysteries will find the detailed medieval setting of this mystery to prove most realistic and satisfying. Mary and her unborn child are brutally murdered, and villagers place the blame on a priest who must flee his home for a crime he didn't commit. It's 1323, and the young priest faces some of his greatest challenges in this moving mystery.
