BLISS NOW by Swami Ramanada
Great book from a great man/Swami! I would highly recommend anything by this man and Swami.

His latest CD, Wings of a Dawn is amazing. The CD he wrote in memory of his friend the Indian female astronaut who died in the Shuttle accident. This song he sang at the service.

If you are able to see Swamiji perform anywhere, go you'll love him. Swami Ramananda spent much of his life with Anandamayi Ma. To be near Swami Ramananda is to be near Ma. Ma is a true Saint!

Excellent!! I love Bliss Now!

An Inspiration for all Men
This is an outstanding book, and it bring great inspiration to all that are striving for success.

Inspirational
Way to go Lee, et. al!

This volume of work is splendid! Each chapter is its own vignette of triumph over trial, of success without compromise. Each profile is of a contrasting context than the others, and together they form a beautiful mosaic of thought, courage, and intellect. This body of work would make an excellent gift to a young mind in bloom.

Entertaining and thoughtful
This book is a collection of short stories. When I began reading this book, I immediately read five or six stories. Later, I realized it was better to read one story at a time, and take time to reflect on its meaning and purpose. I very much enjoyed reading this book, both for entertainment, and for the history and enhanced understanding of Chinese culture. I always thought that American and Chinese cultures were very different, and yet many of these stories deal with themes that are common in English literature. Mr. Ma's command of the English language is amazing. I very much enjoyed this book.

A book for every ghost-story lover!
This is a very well written book, stays true to the original classic, Liau Tsai. The author has managed to not only translate the language, but also maintained the integrity of the Classic. Kudos to Mr. Ma!

A helpful Introduction
It's difficult to fault a book compiled from other author's articles, except maybe how the book is organized. But Globalization and the Challenges of the New Century : A Reader is not only useful, but topical. The discussion starts with Huntington's now oft-and-overquoted essay, "The Clash of Civilizations?", and moves to Barber and Kaplan. Later, some other luminaries appear, but the strength of the collection is the depth of arguments by not-so famous authors. Also, the volume breaks globalization into it's political, economic, technological, and cultural aspects, something that seemingly perplexes most people, because their arguments pass too quickly and easily between all of them. There is so much here to read, but, perhaps, some more information for more reading would be useful. This book provides a useful start for those looking for an interesting and rigorous look at what can become an empty slogan at dinner-parties and coffee breaks.

Great Primer
The Economist described the book this way and I agree completely, "If you want to catch up on some of the best articles written about globalisation since the topic became fashionable several years ago, this reader is the place to start."

Helpful book for practitioners
This book has been compiled by Matthieu Ricard. A Frenchman, Ricard got his PhD in molecular biology and pursued a career in scientific research before abandoning that life to go to Asia to study Tibetan Buddhism with some of the great lamas there. He did all this much to the surprise of his father, an eminent French intellectual, atheist and philosopher Jean-Francois Revel. You can read their recent dialogue, many decades after Ricard left, in the fascinating book "The Monk and the Philosopher."

One of Ricard's main teachers was the great Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, pictured on the cover of this book. He is considered an unsurpassed master of Tibetan Buddhism, a very senior lineage holder in the Nyingma school, and a teacher of many other great lamas, including H.H. the Dalai Lama. Particularly, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche was a master of Dzogchen.

In this very slim yet illuminating volume, Khyentse Rincpoche teaches on one of the most essential practices in Tibetan Buddhism, guru yoga. This is a meditation in which one fuses one's mind with the mind of one's guru. It is an important part of guru devotion, a practice done daily by most serious Tibetan Buddhist practitioners, and one that is common to all of the four schools.

That being said, not many teachings are available in published format on this very important practice. Guru yoga is of course mentioned in every introductory text to Tibetan Buddhism, and every more advanced book notes that one must practice guru yoga as a preliminary to any higher level practices (tantras, mahamudra, dzogchen, etc.) So this is therefore a very valuable book for practitioners. Transcribed from oral teachings, it very concisely points out the essence of this practice, gives advice, and points out the implications for one's whole life.

Because it is heavily focused on the actual practice, this book is not recommended for anyone who does not already engage in guru yoga. Nor should it be taken as a "how-to" manual on guru yoga. It seems to me that guru yoga should not be practiced unless one has been taught and empowered by a lama in person.

This book is especially suited for Nyingmapas, as the sadhana discussed focuses on Padmasambhava. That being said, it is clear that practitioners from all four schools have much to gain from reading and studying it.

Recommended for students of Yoga and Buddhism.
Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche's Guru Yoga examines the beliefs of Vajrayana Buddhist traditions of Tibet, focussing on the practice of 'guru yoga', merging with the mind of the master, and considering its practice and benefits. Chapters provide important links between devotion and the power of the master to provide ultimate realization.

LIKE METAL? BUY THIS!
You will never see a book like this again. Mark Hale has created the perfect manual to research metal history. This is the History of Metal, all meat no filler! This book also has some great promo photos of bands that a true fan of metal will enjoy

A Must for any metal collector.
I first saw this book at my local library back in 1995. I had to have one for myself. This book lists hard rock/heavy metal bands from the 60's to about 1991. it cross-references bands and their members and give record label and catalog number information. This is a must for any metal head. Do not bother with Martin Popoff's Heavy Metal Guide, it's very biased. This book just lists the facts as Mark Hale researched them. i recently showed it to Jon Schaffer of iced Earth and James Rivera of Helstar and they were very impressed. It's well worth the price.

Howlin' Mad Vs. the Army : Conflict in Command, Saipan 1944

THE TRUTH AT LAST
Harry Gailey has authored an articulate expose, really, which peels away the years of distrotion and myth that have grown out of this unfortunate incident (the Smith vs Smith controversy, in which Marine Lt General Holland Smith relieved his subordinate, Major General Ralph Smith, USA, of command at Saipan). Orignially Gailey had heard from Edmund Love, the 27th Infantry Division historian, that it was common knowledge amongst those of the 27th that MG Ralph Smith was unjustly relieved (the 27th ID was Ralph Smith's division). Without going into detail about the how's and why's of the book, suffice it to say that this book gives a revealing critique of the marine General, the events leading up to Saipan which shaped his opinions, and a systematic demolition of the rumor that the 27th troops were cowardly and inept. It also provides the day-to-day history of the fighting, the heaviest of which fell on the 27th. This is a true story of interservice hatreds and should be back in print.

The Dismissal at Saipan Revisited.
Marine Corps Lt. Gen. H.M. "Howlin' Mad" Smith, Commander of V Amphibious Corps on June 15, 1944 lead the assault against Saipan in the Marianas. Ashore was the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions, who suffered sufficiently heavy initial casualties to commit the Army 27th Division. The three divisions advanced eastward across the waist of the island. Leaving only two battalions of the 27th (one said to be under strength) to destroy the enemy in the southeastern part of the island, H.M. Smith pivoted the two Marine Divisions and the bulk of the 27th in a line advancing north. The 27th was now assigned the center of the line facing the central highlands. By the eighth day of the battle for Saipan, the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions had advanced rapidly on each side of the island. The 27th lagged far behind, creating a "U" shaped front and the threat of open flanks for both Marine Divisions. The elements of the 27th left in the southeast were likewise making little progress. Whether these developments were due to the Army facing the enemy on far more difficult terrain and defended by greater numbers, is the subject matter of Gailey's book. On June 24, H.M. Smith, without any reconnaissance by members of Corps staff, relieved his subordinate, Maj. Gen. Ralph Smith. The resulting furor in the media caused a firestorm and increased the inter-services resentment.

Tracing H.M. Smith's bitterness to his earlier experience with the 27th on Makin, Gailey skillfully builds a case against Howlin Mad. In fairness, this book should be read together with H.M. Smith's "Coral and Brass". That autobiographical work was written largely as an explanation of the dismissal. It is beyond the scope of this review to compare the two divergent views but, by and large, one is left with the conviction that the accepted historical view is based more upon the preconceptions of the Hearst Newspapers and Time Magazine and not fact. Like MacArthur, it would appear that Howlin' enjoyed the favor of the press.

H.M. Smith was a genius at training, tactics and logistics. His service to his country and the Corps can not be overstated. His ability as a field commander is not as clear. Gailey has done much to restore the name of Ralph Smith and the men of the 27th Division who subsequently had to carry the stigma of cowards when they later fought on Okinawa.

Having Grown up in Hull
My husband and I were given this book as a gift, and having grown up in Hull, it was very special. We learned a lot about the town we had known for 20 years; I only wish I knew about it while living there. The photos were wonderful. I am now going to buy this book for my parents, who have sinced moved away from Hull but who I know will enjoy the book immensely.

Nantasket Beach a big hit
What a great book, I gave it as a gift to someone who grew up in Hull and they enjoyed the book. The photos brought back great memories reminded them of the history of the area. If you are from the area of Massachusettes that Nantasket Beach is and want to learn the history I would recommend you pick up this book, there is a lot more to the place than the beach!

Filled with unique language, stories and activities
This engaging hagadah is in Right to Left format. It includes instructions for the additional use of Miriams Cup, tambourines, and an orange. It open with an invocation. It includes voweled Hebrew, English translations, english transliterations, readings, remembrances, commentaries, and explanations, which makes for a great symposium around the table. Shifra and Puah are recalled and given voices. Blessings that traditionally start "baruch ata" are also rendered in the feminine "Birucha at yah", using the innovative god language of "yah" as in "Hallelu-yah". You have the option of using "ruach ha-Olam" instead of "melech ha-olam." Photos from past seders are interspersed in the text. Also includes bios on famous women for the four cups (bella abzug, emma lazarus, szold, leibowitz, etc.). At the back are a couple of pages of addresses for interesting organizations and resources. Only drawback.. Dayenu has just three verses, and not the traditional billions.

SUPERB!
As a Jew and a committed feminist, I thought I knew everything there was to know about feminist seders. Boy (Girl!), was I wrong! This hagadah is brilliant. It is beautiful to look at, it is filled with creative innovations that build on Jewish tradition while at the same time transforming it, and it takes social action seriously -- throughout the book there are boxes inviting the reader to do something and get involved. My family is used to a more traditional seder, so I wouldn't use this book as our only hagadah -- I absolutely will cut and paste from it to make our seder a richer experience. I am so excited for my daughters to grow up in a world where this kind of stuff is commonplace.
