Essential Endocrinology (Essentials Series)

Average review score:

Completely Vague, as intended
This book assumes that the reader knows a lot of physiology and molecular biology. I havent taken those courses in years so I found myself referring back to my old undergraduate textbooks quite frequently. It is a brief overview guide, being only 180 pages, It leaves out a lot of important information reguarding each hormone. It's no textbook.

4 stars because the book lacks essential tables and graphs that outline the major functions and effects of each hormone. A synopsis would be nice every now and then, especially considering this IS a synopsis manual to endocrinology.

A great beginners guide and a fantastic quick reference tool for professionals.

Fall River, Ma

Good Reference Book
This book is comprised of two historical photos of Fall River per page, divided by chapters such as "Buildings", "Schools", etc. The text is the captions under the photos. There is a wealth of information in those captions such as: what year a structure was made, what year it was razed, what took its place, its location both old and new, etc. It is an easy reference tool to historical Fall River, Massachusetts, in the sense that it would take a person poring over many other books to get all this information, if you even did then. What I did not like about the book: The author did not include a great variety of schools or churches, and had several on the same property. Photos on Lizzie Borden are four: Portrait of Lizzie; photo of murder house; arrest log; and the entrance to Oak Grove Cemetery.
I enjoyed this well-done book. But I wish there were more photos in it.

The History of the Sixteen Karmapas of Tibet

The subject matter carries the reader forward
The lives of the Karmapas, successive reincarnations of the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, are here told in an almost textbook-like fashion. This happened, then that happened. There are no dramatic flourishes, no author's interpretations, to pretty it up. Nor is there a need for such narrative artistry. The subject matter is exotic enough, and the lives are fascinating in simple outline. This is essentially a history book intended for readers who are already interested in the Tibetan tradition of tulkus and/or the Karma Kagyu school.

In Our Own Words: Stories of North Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1900-1960
Published in Paperback by Cambridge Historical Commission (September, 1997)

Boyer does a fine job "reminiscing" with North Cambridge.
In her first book, my cousin Ms. Boyer, has done an excellent job talking and compiling oral history facts with many of the delightful and interesting residents of North Cambridge. One does not have to have been a resident of North Cambridge inorder to enjoy and learn of North Cambridge's rich heritage. IN OUR OWN WORDS is an excellent book to pass down through the generations. North Cambridge has to be proud of Ms. Boyer's IN OUR OWN WORDS. I look forward to more historical and factual books by Ms. Boyer in the near future.

Passover -- the feminine point of view
I have always been a fan of Debbie Friedman and found this Haggadah to be a fascinating alternative to the traditional Passover Seder. this Haggadah follows the traditional form of the Seder, but focuses on the heriocs of Jewish women in every generation. Along with the CD, it makes for a wonderful way to educate our children about Jewish leaders and heroes who just happen to be women.

Story of love
This is an awesome book. I had to read it for a French class, but I would definately recommend it to anyone. The author approaches this very sad story with a lot of humour. I loved it! The amount of understanding and compassion the two sons have for their mother is so heartwarming.

Laura's Ma
This book is a very good book. It tells you how Laura's Ma, Caroline raises her family, and copes with moving, and never having a stable home. I enjoyed this book, but I think it would be better to read the real books, the Caroline years. (Little house at the Crossroads, Little house in Brookfield...)

Excellent book for Clinical Approach, good for basic facts
This book is divided into 2 parts: Part 1 deals with The Clinical Approach, and Part 2 deals with the Essential Background Information.

The Clinical Approach is the best part and includes 10 chapters (CNS, Eyes, Limbs, Head & Neck, Abdomen, Respiratory system, CVS, Hematology, Diabetes, and Skin). It focuses on the physical examination, and on the symptomatology.

The second part contains a summary of basic clinical facts about the diseases which you can read in any standard textbook. In addition, there're many important subjects which are not covered properly in this section (e.g. dermatology).

This book is not intended to be a complete textbook, and I think it should be supplemented by further reading. The margins of the pages are large so that you can add your additional notes. It contains few diagrams (no photographic pictures) and many tables.

Memories of a Great Childhood
My wife and I spent 27 years growing up in Leominster. We now have also lived 27 years of our lives away from Leominster although we go back pretty regular. We found this book to be very enjoyable as a walk down memory lane. We found many photos of people we know/knew (including us in the 63/64 High School prom photo), our churchs, schools and photos from the 50's & 60's that we remember so well. We are having a ball showing our children and grandchildren sights and people from where we grew up, where our families came from and from where many still live. A very well put together photo book which we highly recommed. Our sincere Thanks! to the writers and publisher.

a wonderful collection of pithy treasures
What a wonderful collection of pithy treasures from one of the great treasure - revealers. Sarah Harding had me so consumed by the book that I could not put it down. It is full of great information and historic events. It is truly a great piece of writing and a precious teaching for all of us travelling along the Buddhist path. Great to see a balanced accounts from Male & Female practitioners. There has not been a lot of writings published from the Female disciples of the past and I often come into contact with Female practitioners that see Buddhism as Male only, great to see a balanced view

It was interesting reading about how many Termas were hidden by Guru Rinpoche and why he did it. And to whom would revel them.
Lama Jewel Ocean is a wonderful clear and practice text on how to practice the whole path including Dozogchen Teachings, any body unclear on how or what to practice and how to keep the "right view" will benefit from reading this text. And may it be of Great benefit of all sentient beings.
