An Invaluable WorkThe Hidden Teachings of Tibet serves as the core reference work for anyone interested in the terma, or hidden treasure, tradition of Tibet. Tulku Thondup, who has lived in the U.S. since 1980, provides a solid overview of the various types of treasures, how they are concealed and discovered, details on the so-called dakini script in which they are written, and insights into the tertons, or treasure discoverers, themselves. It is all organized in a format that makes for easy reference. Originally published in 1986, the book was issued in paperback in 1997. Tulku Thondup was also a key resource for another valuable book on the terma traditions, Apparitions of the Self by Prof. Janet Gyatso. Reviewer: Lawrence Pintak is a journalist and author who writes frequently on Buddhism and spirituality.
Interesting for Buddhist fansThis book is recommended for those who want to get more knowhow on tibet buddhism termas. This book is not for beginners...

Modern Syria: From Ottoman Rule to Pivotal Role in the Middle East
Published in Paperback by Sussex Academic Pr (July, 1999)

Just out of CuriosityWell well well... I never read the book. But I had a course with Dr. Joseph Ginat and he told me he was never been to Syria.
I am just curious how a person can write about a country, especially as complicated as Syria, if he has never been there ???
I think 3 stars are too generous for this book.

Comprehensive, informative, insightful, well-written.In Modern Syria: From Ottoman Rule To Pivotal Role In The Middle East, Moshe Ma'oz, Joseph Ginat, and Onn Winckler collaborate to identify and explain the social, economic, and political issues that face the modern nation of Syria, and explore the historical reasons behind Syria's pivotal role in Middle East issues. Modern Syria outlines the country's grand ideological and strategic goal to achieve all-Arab unity and the political, military, and economic obstacles it encountered. Attention is paid to the Islamic op=position to the Ba'th regime; the loss of Soviet support; Israeli military superiority; the breaking of security protocols with Turkey; increasing Syrian involvement in Lebanon; the struggle for the return of the Golan Heights, and much more. Modern Syria is highly recommended reading for students of Middle Eastern affairs, Syrian history, culture, and politics; Islam and the pan-Arabic movement; and the United States involvement as a peace broker in the Israeli-Arab conflict in general, and Israeli-Syrian diplomacy in particular.

Better than OthersThis was a great book in this series. It was better than other ones I have seen and makes one wonder how Newburyport can be so small yet have so much history.
Good pictorial, but a bit priceyNewburyport MA is one of those wonderful "Images of America" books, containing pictures from days of yore along with a brief historical description with the picture. On the whole, it is quite well done, and an excellent source for those interested in snippets about this Massachussetts city's history.

reality poetryBring The Noise: Warrior Poetry brings together many aspects of the life of Darrin Coe as he trains and fights in the world of No Holds Barred fighting. You get to see a very poignant cross-section of his life from being in the fight ring to memories of what his grandfather taught him to musings about his children. It's a wonderful look into the life of the mediocre man stepping out and living dangerously.

The Cape Cod Garden
Published in Paperback by Paraphyses Press (June, 2002)

Seaside and cape gardeners will find practical information.Cape Cod gardeners from beginners to experienced respect this book. But it may be useful to any gardener with Cape-like growing conditions. The question and answer format is easy to use thanks to a good index and chapter divisions. The biggest drawback is shortage of drawings and no pictures. Plant lists organized by need (for example,Seaside ground covers, Low maintenance shrubs) would be useful for gardeners in similar environments to the Cape.

China's Minority Nationalities
Published in Hardcover by Foreign Languages Press (1989)
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

China's National MinoritiesThis seems to be a relatively complete book on a topic on which it is difficult to find accurate, up-to-date information. It was originally published in 1981 in Chinese, and was translated into English, and presumably updated, in 1994. I will review this book as someone with a personal rather than academic interest in the topic. I adopted a second daughter from China. While we were in China, the Han Chinese took great pains to point out that my daughter was not Han, but a member of one of China's recognized 55 ethnic minorities. This was based on her appearance, and they did not know to what group she belonged. I have been attempting to find information on this topic ever since, and it is sparse. This book is really a survey of all 55 recognized ethnic groups by a group of social scientists. Each ethnic group got four or five pages to discuss their general location and distribution within China, their language(s) and language groups, customs and traditions, costume descriptions, socioeconomic situation and history. The history sections were somewhat marred by the occasional jarring lapse into Communist propaganda language, and the use of the Communist model to describe their situation today (post liberation) and to describe religious practices. This made me suspicious of some of the modern statistics re: their current health, education and wealth which are in direct contradiction to less biased sources. However, compared to many Chinese publications, the language was pretty tame. They had 33 glossy color photos which were nice, but incomplete, and a map with the groups distribution which was again incomplete, and a chart which compared each group with their language family, location and date of establishment(?).All in all, a helpful, interesting but somewhat out-of-date, biased and incomplete resource.

Beautifully illustrated children's bookThis children's picture book tells the story of Thomas and Clara whose misunderstanding spans five decades. The two were orginally engaged to be married, but come home from a church picnic not speaking to each other. They spend the next fifty years living singly, and it isn't until each plays a sneaky visit to the other's farm that they meet again. Will they resolve their quarrel?
This book was beautifully illustrated with watercolors. I did feel sorry for the main characters' spending most of their lives apart before getting a chance to resolve their problems. Children will like the pictures; but adults will understand the story better.

Fantastic but very complicated. As far as cook books go this is a fantastic book to opt for. It ranges from delicate sauces to the most complex of deserts. This book has only two flaws which in a sense are not real flaws. The first is that this book is definately designed for the experienced cook. Though it offers an explantion of many of the complicated tasks in its recipes, there is a lot of knowledge it takes for granted. So while this book is definately not for the rank amateur, with a combination of other books this could be a fantastic referece book to own. As for the second flaw, the ingredients required are not always the easiest to find. Some of the things neccessary for the recipes can not be found in your everyday super-market. But if you have access to some specialized markets you will be cooking like a professional in no time at all.
