Excellent home remedy guide for the price
After listening to Wallach's "Live doctors do lie tape" I was expecting huge insights in this book. As a long time alternative medicine advocate and long time member of the Life Extension Foundation the insights were not earth shattering but good basic principals and practices. The fourth edition was published in 2000 but there are some discrepancies between the book and Wallach's tape, e.g. the book recommends maintaining a cholesterol level of 180-200 mg/100ml blood whereas the tape 200-250 ? I was also surprised that tylenol was recommended for anything.Overall an excellent addition to one's medical library and I believe Dr. Wallach's message is definitely important-M.D.'s certainly are not "invincible gods" and the average American needs to become aware of the undue influence the drug industry has on standard medical practice in America.

This has got to be the best book on Nutrition
I could Not put this book down, I understand so much about the human body now. Not to mention How Dr.'s Do things.
Great Humor too!
This is a Must if you don't want to be a lab mouse anymore.
Like in anything You need to use COMMON SENSE. This makes it easy. I read about Dr. Wallach only found one bad rap.

Life After Death: A Study of the Afterlife in World Religions

Excellent intro to religions and life after death
You must be alive right now, otherwise why would need this book?

So for arguments sake, you're alive and you know someday you won't be. You would like to know what's on the other side. This book by Farnaz Ma'Sumian can provide you details on the beliefs of all the major religions in the world. The book offers an introductory overview of Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam and Bahai.

Additionaly Ma'Sumian has researched Near-Death Experiences (NDE) quite well and offers a broad explanation of current theories to these experiences.

The book is fair, impartial and well written. For those seeking theological information on the subject of life after death this is a wonderful introduction.

Life After Death
Life After Death is true to its title. The book was first published in 1995 and has been reissued. The first seven chapters cover the religious ideas of afterlife in Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and the Bahai faiths. Farnaz Masumian goes on to discuss Reincarnation & Transmigration, the Near-Death Experience (NDE), and Religion & the NDE Phenomenon. The result is a treasure of information in 175 pages.

One of the most important features of the book is that, in discussing afterlife, she quotes "chapter and verse" from the sacred texts of each religion. Each chapter focusing on a religion includes the major writings of the religion, the primary concepts that relate to afterlife, the influence and/or similarities of that religion in relationship to other religions.

The big difference between religions of the East and West involves the concepts of reincarnation and transmigration which form the cornerstone of Eastern belief about afterlife but remain a minority position and esoteric idea in the West. The chapter on the Near-Death Experience (NDE) provides a standard and basic overview. She concludes that the most plausible explanation for NDE's is that they are, "universally available mystical experiences". The final chapter, "Religion and the NDE Phenomenon", is an excellent integration of the NDE into the literature of the world's religions.

All-in-all, Life After Death by Farnaz Masumian is an outstanding book. Having the Scripture and verse quotations from the world's religions alone is worth the price of the book. Added to this is her careful analysis of the concepts and contradictions both within and between the various religions. This book is a "must" for all students of life after death in general and the NDE in particular.

Scholarly work, in need of Vol II
Dr. Vidyarthi must have done ages of research and hard work to have written this part of the book. Basically dealing with divine revelations about the coming of a Prophet in earlier scriptures, this book only deals with Bible and the Torah. Second Volume is desperately needed which should deal with Vedas and Puranas of Hinduism. His original work in Urdu has dealt with it.

All in all, a good read, which might be warded away as wishful interpretation by Dr. Vidyarthi, by those who have no sound arguments to discredit or disprove his interpretations.

Reviewing the 'M I W S': My humble opinion
Reading this very work of A.H. Vidyarthi is really an exciting experiance. The title itself is enough to catch the reader and their mind to go futher and futher in the reading. The message is crystal clear. The writer firmly upholding the idea that the Prophet Muhammad have been mentioned in the earliest sacred scriptures of the world religions. Actually, that is what the Quran states. From the approach taken, the writer strongly agrees that all of the world's major religions derive from the same source of the religion brought by the Prophet Muhammad. If not, how can his coming have been mentioned in those scriptures.

Touching about Muhammad in the Old and New Testament is not a suprising discussion, for the Quran itself talks about these two Holy Books a lot via its content. The Quran also tells and narates almost quarter of its content about Moses and Jesus. Nevertheless if we put the traditions and sayings of the Prophet himself in account. The relationship of historical banckground of these trio monotheism religions is well known. But to talk about Muhammad in Hinduism and Buddhism scriptures (for example), is very an extra intresting topic.

Via this volume, the writer covers the topic regarding the prophecies of the coming Muhammad in the Torah and Bible. The discussion is so good and details, supported by very sound research methods. However, no matter how good this work is, we should clear in our mind, all the discussions and opinions in this book is merely the personal opinions of the writer. Eventhough I enjoy the book, but in some points, I'm disagree with the intrepetations of some Quranic verses.

Basically, this work is amazing. I do suggest this book for anybody especially those who love the subject of comparative religions.

just what i was looking for
i like this book. i wanted something to simplify the service for me and also to translate the prayers into poetic english instead of the stilted hard to read translation in the artscroll siddur. i also liked the volume 2 of the series, about the amidah.

An outstanding commentary on the Sh'ma
This is an excellent resource for someone that is not satisfied with just rote repitition of the Sh'ma and it's blessings. This book will give you a history of where the prayers are coming from and an excellent english translation. The use of commentators from various Jewish backgrounds adds to the flavor of the book. You are not just exposed to one opinion or another but are given a wide range of views. I look forward to reading all of the books in this series.

Prague Coffee Table Book
This book is truly beautiful...something wonderful to display on a coffee table or bookshelf to fondly remember your travels by or simply as a feast for the eyes of those who have yet to experience the wonderful old city of Prague. The photographs are beautiful and the text has been kept to a minimum so it's more of a photographic journal than a picture every once in awhile used to describe a paragraph of words. Only one problem...the book is entirely in German so unless you're fluent, keep looking for an English edition. The cover says "PRAG" so you'll be able to tell right away that it's not English.

Absolutely Beautiful Prague
I just purchased this book. I was in Prague in June and had dinner in the Municipal House - Obecni Dum - and tea in the Grand Hotel Europa. The store where I purchased the book had it in German but also in English. I bought the English edition. The photos are exquisite. Anyone who has been in Prague would treasure this book. It is so much better than the tourist books that were on sale in Prague when I was there. Highly recommended.

Clear, step-by-step instruction in Dzogchen
The editorial review(above) says that this is not for casual readers. Of course not, what "casual reader" would be looking for a book which shows how to enter directly into a fully enlightened condition of life. Anyone not interested in such information should read nothing on Dzogchen or Zen. Those who are interested can begin Dzogchen studies very successfully with this clear, convincing and inspiring book. The meaning of Dzogchen, its methods and its results are superbly presented -- and offered in a series of steps which include meditation guidance to be followed in moving into and on from each step presented.
There is nothing obscure, vague or misleading about the writing in this book. For those stumbling on the book and simply curious to find out what this odd sounding business of Dzogchen is all about -- don't bother, YOU will find it obscure and certainly uninteresting. If, on the other hand, you are a serious spiritual seeker with some familiarity with Zen or Vedanta(non-dual traditions) then you will probably be excited to find such a direct, clear and useable volume as this.

Remarkable for those w/some experience of non-dual awareness
The authors of this remarkable book, two tantric teachers from the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism (which is where Dzogchen finds its home), state in the opening that this book is for those who have had at least a glimpse of non-dual awareness already. Without that, they say, it's rather pointless to read on, and I would agree.

If you have had some experiences of this, however, and you feel attracted (perhaps through a karmic connection?) to Dzogchen, then this book is a treasure. It is the closest to a "how-to" book that one can really find on this remarkable tradition. That being said, it is no substitute for a qualified teacher.

Dzogchen is a tradition of "formless" or "open" meditation, somewhat like Zen (also in its radical nondualism and corresponding use of paradoxical language). However, it is located within Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism, and hence exists in a different system to Zen. From my own experience, I would hazard that Zen is in a sense simpler and cleaner than the Tibetan systems. However, I now prefer the Tibetan teachings, since they seem more encompassing and are richer (in my mind). But every person is different.

Dzogchen means "the Great Perfection", since in Dzogchen one sees all phenomena as the utterly perfect play of primordial wisdom. For more, I would suggest turning to the book.

One last comment: the book gives exercises and stresses that one follow them strictly and not just glaze over them. I would also reiterate that suggestion. Realization comes from practice, not just skimming through a book. Do the exercises faithfully, and I think you will benefit greatly from this excellent slim volume.

May all beings abide in perfect bliss.

Does a good job, but incompletely
First, let's look at the strengths of Marilyn Dwelley's "Spring Wildflowers of New England". The illustrations are excellent, extremely simple to grasp and showing enough detail to "rough out" the identification of the majority of flowers one is likely to see, without a lot of extraneous background material seen in many photographic collections. Second, its small size makes it useful for the field. Third, the index is pretty complete, allowing you to look up many flowers by multiple common names as well as the official Latin nomenclature.

The weaknesses are also significant. There is no introduction to speak of but, rather, the book simply opens with one page of definitions, then a stream of flowers. There is no attempt to divide flowers up by anything but color; with so many white flowers, some attention to grouping by size or form would make identification more manageable. There is little information on many flowers other than their form and presentation in the wild, while for others there are comments about edibility, folklore, etc. Also, the division of flowers into color groups is slightly peculiar as she includes red flowers in the pink group and violet flowers with the blue group. And some guides contradict her comments such as regarding the edibility of the May-apple fruit. BUT, overall, despite my negative comments, I like this guide (I bought it, didn't I?) and would recommend it to be used with a bulkier guide, like the Audobon series book, as a backup for more detailed information.

Thank you Down East Books!
If you want to know what is blooming in your New England surroundings, this is the book to reach for. Arranged by season and color with color illustrations as well as both common and latin names, this book can satisfy any level of naturalist's curiousity. It is great to see this hard to find volume back in print and in hardcover to hold up in the field!

It's OK, but you can do better.
The Madhyamika philosophy is the most profound view of reality formulated within the Buddhist tradition. It was first articulated clearly two thousand years ago by the Indian saint Nagarjuna, and later elaborated upon by his disciple Aryadeva and the famous Chandrakirti. The works of these three masters formed the philosophical bedrock for the Buddhism that later flourished in Tibet, and most of their writings which are currently available in English have come to us through Tibet. This book is part of that tradition. The book contains Aryadeva's famous Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Deeds of Bodhisattvas, as well as a commentary by the 14th century Tibetan master Gyel-tsap. These are then further elaborated upon in this volume by Geshe Sonam Rinchen.

The book, is divided into two parts. The first deals with more "conventional" Buddhist truths which address renunciation from worldly attachments, abandonment of delusions and disturbing emotions such as pride and anger, cultivation of compassion and so forth. It is here that this book is at its most compelling and most enjoyable to read. The second part deals with "ultimate" Buddhist truth, arguments in favor of the Madhyamika philosophy that all phenomena, although they appear, are empty of inherent existence. This philosophy is extremely profound and subtle. Only a few books in English really do it justice, and this, unfortunately, isn't one of them. I am not sure if the fault is Aryadeva's, Gyel-tsap's, Geshe Sonam Rinchen's or the translator's, but readers sincerely interested in plumbing the depths of the Madyamika would do better in my opinion to study some of the currently available translations and commentaries of Nagarjuna's and Chandrakirti's works. Unfortunately, there are no other English translations and commentaries on this work by Aryadeva which are in print at this time.

a delightful and beneficial fruit for the mind
Whoever experienced Geshe Sonam Rinchen La's humourous wisdom, meeting him in person, will be eager to prolong the inspiration, that grew out of his words.

In the " 400 stanzas", Aryadeva, an ancient indian saint, famous scholar of Nagarjuna, explains, how to regard life out of Buddhist insight. His compressed verses show a radical wit, provoking the readers' contradiction, making them think about the actual meaning.

To unfold the contents of Aryadeva's mental seeds, comments and explaining stories have been added by following Indian and Tibetan Buddhist personalities, which are a pleasure to read, due to their poetical, funny and colourful descriptions of how to consider apparently common situations in a refreshing new way.

Geshe Rinchen La rounds up each chapter, summarizing the essentials, clearing them from the narrative ornaments to emphasize their advice for the present time.

'Though dealing with highly complex philosophical subjects, this book is earth-bound as life itself. It fascinates in combining a thousand years of Buddhist spirit, serving to improve human life through changing ones own mental influence on it.

Dead Doctors Don't Lie
Published in Hardcover by Wellness Publication (01 July, 1999)
Authors: Joel Wallach and Ma Lan
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $19.99
Average review score:

Money-hungry Wallach know his stuff... BUT
Dr. Joel Wallach certainly knows his stuff. He knows the importance of minerals in diet, knows which foods to eat, and has studied long-living cultures and received his information from others who have done extensive research. What I do not like about this book is the fact the entire book is basically Wallach preaching about his supplements and his involvement in different supplement companies. His colloidal minerals are a very good, important supplement but some of his recommendations are strictly because his company happens to carry that certain product. All in all, it's a great book for someone with poor eating habits, and is in poor health. For the educated ones, you can find better material on the internet these days.. or in Robert Barefoots book "The Calcium Factor", which is the best book I have ever read in my life.

Astounding
Dr. Wallach reveals the most important things of all behind air, water, sleep and food. If you think you are getting all your vitamins and minerals, think again! This book is awesome!

will add years to your life.....
I've read three of Dr. Wallach's books: Let's Play Doctor, Rare Earths Forbidden Cures and Dead Doctor's Don't Lie, I'd rank Dead Doctor's Don't lie as the best. He has some wild anti medical establishment theories but above all else his most important message is that rather relying exclusively on doctors people should take responsibility for keeping themselves healthy. I haven't bought any of his controversial supplements but based on info in his books I've both lost weight and have discontinued taking all five of my prescriptions by simply cutting the foods out of my diet that were unknowingly causing my symptoms.
