If you are interested in Tibetan Buddhism, I've found that it's much more useful to start of with reading some biographies, rather than reading theoretical works. Buddhism is, by definition, a matter of practice and experience, not of letters and concepts. These are the lifestories of the masters of the Longchen Nyinthig. Some stories are amazing fairietales, full of symbolical and theatrical events. Some stories are very close to our own experience. All stories are valuable accounts of the lifes of people who were willing to look beyon their own gardengate, to the needs of others. Very, very inspiring.

But... I have two points of criticism: 1) the text is sometimes very sloppy, with alineas full of unrelated facts and remarks, which are not necessarily in chronological order. 2) The style is somewhat Tibetan, and not all jargon is explained. This may be an obstacle to new readers.

But anyway, this book is a definite must-have, especially for people with an interst in the Nyingma-tradition, or people who have done a Phowa-course with Lama Ole Nydahl (this Nyinthig-lineage is the Phowa-lineage).

An inspired work of scholarship and translation
Tulku Thondup's book is a great contribution to English language resources on Tibetan Buddhism. The background information in the introduction and footnotes is extensive and provides what scholars and neophytes alike would need to know about Vajrayana Buddhism in general, and the Nyingma tradition in particular, in order to better understand and appreciate the sacred biographies of great masters that are collected here. The life-stories themselves are redolent of the spirit of enlightenment, and as the title suggests, abound in descriptions of meditational experience and miraculous events. This is a good book for Buddhist practitioners, because it shows the true meaning of discipline and devotion, as exemplified by the lives of great masters.

Though the life-stories are not all told chronologically, as tends to be the case with Western sacred biographies, this also tends to be true of the original Tibetan biographies. Tulku Thondup, with the skillful editorship of Harold Talbot, has done a great service in navigating many difficult and rare primary sources in Tibetan language, and compiling and translating these stories from them.

A small word of caution regarding the first book review above, frank@philos.rug.nl from Groningen, Holland. Tulku Thondup's book has little if anything to do with Phowa. The Phowa or "transference of consciousness" taught by Ole Nydahl is a distinct practice of the Karma Kagyu tradition (though it is found in similar forms elsewhere, including the Nyingma traditions such as the Longchen Nyingthig). The Nyingthig tradition is much more than just Phowa, so the two should not be confused, as our Dutch friend suggests here. Those interested in the Kagyu tradition of Phowa can learn something of its transmission in another excellent example of Tibetan sacred biography in translation, _The Life of Marpa the Translator_, Shambhala (1995 et. al.).

Lives of Buddhist Masters
Tulku Thondup presents here the biographies of 36 Tibetan Buddhist Masters. They belong to the Longchen Nyingthig tradition which is currently one of the most well known and practiced among Western followers of the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Introduction and first chapters explain the setting of the Longchen Nyingthig tradition within Tibetan Buddhism and Buddhism as a whole, and give detailed lineage lists. Then follow the biographies, the heart of the book.

These life-stories vary greatly - some are brief and others run to many pages. Some of the masters lived over a thousand years ago while others are still alive now. But each story is told with simplicity and freshness that help the reader to connect with these masters. As Tulku Thondup says in his Preface, "If the lives are read in order to feel and unite with the experiences of the masters, the stories will certainly arouse spiritual realization, love, peace, openness, light, and healing in the reader's heart."

A good start in pharmacology !
This is one of the famous books written in pharmacology. it makes it interesting to study this subgect. although it not a comprehensive book in pharmacology and can not be used as a reference, it is good to start with in your medical study. It discusses topics in a nice way with summery at the end of each topic, and have a nice chapters in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics with illustrations. Not boring to read and have a good lyout.

The best entry-level pharmacology textbook
Its strange that such an exciting subject as pharmacology is served by so many badly organised, boringly written and outdated textbooks. Rang + Dale is a refreshing antidote to this strange state of affairs. The first 8 chapters form a superb introduction to the subject - particularly because the authors don't skimp on the physiological details and concentrate on principles rather than endless catalogues of obscure drugs. This is a British textbook and thus uses British nomenclature, but the American equivalents are pointed out along the way, so American readers shouldn't be put off. The more advanced student will of course outgrow the material in this book, but I would strongly recommend this textbook for science undergrads, medical students, and anyone looking for a book to provide a solid foundation to their study of pharmacology.

Xcellent

A Must-Have for Your Atiyoga Library
This book contains the 157 verses by Manjusrimitra describing the experience of the state of pure and total presence which was revealed to him through the first human rDogs-chen master, Garab Dorje.

But the commentary for some of the verses reveal that there is inadequate understanding. For example, verse 122 which reads:

"The ways of overcoming (limitations), the facets (of pure and total presence), the four forms of ever-fresh awareness of the alikeness (of everything),, which are undisturbed (by negative conditions), are known in this (practice)."

The commentary reads:

"The four forms of ever-fresh awareness that thoroughly grasp teh fundamental alikeness (that characterizes) the ultimate content of what is and that are are conditioned by any obstacles; the thirty-seven facets of pure and total presence; the ten ways of overcoming (limitations), etc.; and that which is positive for an individual (relatively speaking), as well as all the positive qualities that belong to the level of the ultimate goal, are known quickly through the reflexive flash of knowing that gives awareness it quality, and brought together in the teaching of the true sense of cultivation".

Another point which I would like to point out is that it is better to read the 157 verses, think about them before reading the commentary. Do not agree with the commentary blindly.

Overall, this book provides good information about rDogs-chen philosophy.

Perhaps the Best Primer on rDzogs-chen Meditation
This book is the result of pain-staking efforts in converting a work of Manjusrimitra. The preface describes what was carefully thought of to make it a book in plain English.

It shines from others in that it also points out misconceptions by so-called experts/practitioners. There is so much rubbish out there (especially on the Internet) that one would be easily be thought incorrect ideas.

The book includes the edition of the Tibetan verse text at Appendix 1. This is good in that I think it shows confidence that it is a good translation.

It also sheds some light on Yogacara and Madhyamaka philosophy and also pointing out differences in some key ideas.

If you want a no-nonsense book on rDzogs-chen, this is it! Read this before you read any other rDzogs-chen book.

A "must" for serious students of Tibetan Buddhism.
Primordial Experience: An Introduction To rDzogs-chen Meditation is the first English translation of a sacred text of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally written by Manjusrimitra, an Indian disciple of the first teacher of Ati yoga, who learned from his master the state of pure and total presence. Primordial Experience examines the concepts of the enlightened mind and true meditation, and comes with a lengthy introduction, background, commentary, and glossary of technical terms. Primordial Experience is an absolute "must" for serious students and devotees of Tibetan Buddhism.

Miss Marple Novels
This collection includes: The Mirror Crack'd, A Carribbean Mystery, Nemesis, What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw! and The Body in the Library. I liked that each novel began with a list of characters and a brief description of them. My favorite of these novels is Nemesis. Miss Marple solves an old case and gets an innocent man out of jail. All the novels are good mysteries. My only complaint is that they are not in chronological order. The Mirror Crack'd is the first novel in the collection but chronologically it is the oldest and it gives away a clue to a later novel in the collection--The Body in the Library.

Agatha Christie
I have read her all her books and enjoy reading everyone of them.i hope you en- joy her books as much as I do.I always find them delightful and very hooked til the very end of the book.

Wonderful Treaty on Contemplation - Dzogchen Style
Namkhai Norbu is an amazing teacher: clear and precise. In this translation of the Longde Series of Dzogchen Teachings, Garab Dorje (Ancient Dzogchen Big-Wig)shows how to maintain contemplation Day and Night. Wonderful introduction, excellent translation of the Text, amazing commentary to follow; Norbu makes the Evening, Night, and Morning practices simple and easy to understand. This text is a kind of Dream-Yoga/Daily-Yoga cream center. It gives you ways to smooth the edges of your Dzogchen practice. I found it easy to read and informative: a real Boon!

A Direct Way to Enlightenment
In this work, Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, an eminent Dzogchen master of modern times, gives a direct way how to practice the Essence of Tibetan Yogic Practice called "Dzogchen" - "the Great Perfection". Please bare in mind that the openness of the teacher's style - with no unclear mystics - is a gift rare to find nowadays. Good luck in your journey to Self-Realization!

A great book about Mexico, from a mexican
This book was actually written by my mom, it was inspired by the 1994 Mexican crisis. Although the title looks like the one of a suppuration book, this one is more like an essay about Mexico, it's economy, and how Mexicans (and foreigners) may find lots of opportunities of self-employment. The book has being presented in some academic forums, there are two places that pop out, the ITAM (Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico), and the Latin Book Fair in Chicago. So if you want to get a view of Mexico, from a different context, or you want to live there, or you want to invest there, or you want to find out more about self-employment, this book is for you.

An eye opener and a handbook
Empleate Tu Mismo, is the advice the author gives her readers. Life time employment is rapidly disappearing in modern Mexico. Entrepreneurs are needed. The author gives a very well documented overview of the effects that the globalization process is having on Mexico's economy, as well as the current need for professionals and people who have the ability to work on their own and create value. In essence it is a very optimistic book and a valuable handbook at the same time as it supplies the reader both with input to understand Mexico's new reality as well as precise guidelines for becoming a succesful contributor to the creation of national wealth and a high wage earner HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Finally an explanation!!
It's fantastic that we finally here the dialog of the monster that was cut out of the picture. Bela Lugosi played the monster in the film. Why was it cut out? The explanation makes no sense since Bela voiced the monster in the final scenes of the previous film. It worked then so why not with this film? The hacking of this script ruined this film. It would have been a much better movie if they left the dialog in. It explains so much.
This a great book for those who are fans of the movie and the Universal monsters. In fact, it's a must!

Magicimage Filmbooks presents:Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman
Another in the great series of Universal Filmscripts. The pictures alone are worth the price of the book. The background also tells about Lugosi's dialogue being cut out and what some of it was. It also explains the ending and the escape of Massey, Knowles, and Ouspenskaya (which is not shown in the film). It is a shame that production of these filmscripts didn't cover ALL of the Universal Horror Movies because of the detailed background of each.

reference not textbook
This is a great book ,it used as a standard text book by generations of dermatologists in INDIA , the text flows like a story , the pictures are very good (especially the CD ROM version)and the information is exaustive.
There is just one problem the information is too exaustive --- 4 volumes and 3700 pages--at this rate it will soon overtake encyclopedia britannica-- a dermatology residents nightmare when it comes to exams--the sole advantage of the size it awes many non dermatologists . My only request to the authors is they come out with a more concise edition , sparing us all the past theories of etio-pathogenesis which have been disproved now anyway, syndromes from single/two case reports of rare presentations giving us clear cut guidelines with regards to treatment on the basis of their personal clinical experience .

CD ROM VERSION--TEXTBOOK
The CD ROM VERSION is great , with very clear pictures which zoom on double clicking , a very good search engine , a navigator and the text in different colours and backgrounds .Easy to print ,is worth having, only the cost is a bit high.I would certainly recommend the CD ROM version to those who are planning to buy the book .

Nepotism reigns
My father spent hours and hours working on this new edition, which includes the definitive guide to ectoparasites in dermatology. It is the Brit bible of dermatology.

Workbook and Laboratory Manual for "Radiographic Positioning and Related Anatomy"

Simple and Precise
All that matters here is simplicity and precision. As the title says, Radiographis Positioning and Related Anatomy. You got what you expected: all radiographic positioning (almost all) and related anatomy (enough for x ray procedures but you really need anatomy book by your side)
I highly recommend this book for reference but additional facts should be close at hand for further referrals. The Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy in the National University of Malaysia gives this book a definite thumbs up. I believe many universities do the same.

Good Reference for X - Ray techs.
If you're an x - ray technician and continually do the same old procedures over and over again such as chest or back x - rays (like I do), you may become rusty on other procedures. If the dr. orders a jaw series or knee sunrise, your mind may draw a blank image of what he's talking about. I always have this book handy in my darkroom in case of these "emergencies". Once I look at the photograph/illustration and the FFD - it all comes back. I set the patient up and take the shot and run it through the processor; it always turns out right (so long as this text is with me).

Xray techs you NEED this book!
I have been an xray technologist since 1984. And I thought I knew everything about taking a chest xray...well, I did, back then. My department purchased this book last month and it is an eye opener! I read things in this book that I didn't know or had forgotten. The pictures are great, information priceless. If you are an 'old salt' like me or just a 'young pup' starting out, I highly recommend this book. You'll keep it with you throughout your career.
